Re: [Trisquel-users] Ubuntu 15.10 and above moving to Snappy instead of DEB. What will the Trisquel team do?
Maybe this snappy itself will be free software, but it can isolate the ubuntu-ecosystem even more, which might get filled up with proprietary software; trisquel could end up in a bad position that way.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Ubuntu 15.10 and above moving to Snappy instead of DEB. What will the Trisquel team do?
None of the FAQ make reference to Snappy being proprietary nor Free nor Open source. I hope snappy will be, at least, open source: Ubuntu cannot provide a better system without Debian. The work Debian does is so titanic that there is no company that can match it so moving away from Debian is a poor decision. Having that in mind, I think the new package management system should be related to DEB somehow.

Anyone, please?
Re: [Trisquel-users] vpnbook.com - A free VPN service
Hello, Privacy by policy is no privacy at all. First, no one is going to jail because of your privacy, even less when you are using a free service and not paying them. So, even if the people behind the project are honest, they still have to comply with the law. They log your IP and connection duration so they have enough information for the government or anyone else to burn you. Second, most of these people are not honest, they actually make profiles based on watching your browsing and sell those to companies and governments. If you want to have priacy, use Tor, I2P, or other decentralized community based service. Now, having said that... if you can't use Tor or I2P (for whatever reason) and want to make it so your ISP can't watch your connection, use a VPN yes, it's better than nothing, but seriously don't think that you are safe... you are not. You are ONLY hiding from your ISP. NO ONE ELSE!!
[Trisquel-users] Re : New to Trisquel :)
I use my computer for multimedia editing :) I does seem as it's loading each time I type in a letter, and its annoying as I need to type everything in the other way round. got a new problem now, and haven't found anything really helpful about it, the ./configure command says command not found. I am running TRisquel 7, why can't I unpack and install .tat.gz files ?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Is anyone here from China?
Isn't the transfer speed much too low in order to actually use 30 tb of space? How can I know if I doesn't get the chance to test their service? Last night I tested Baidu Pan, and the upload speed (using BCloud) was ~180kB/s, while the download (using JDownloader) was 1-2MB/s. However, as of today both speeds are terribly slow. That said, you're encryption scheme might be safe today; but who can predict how things are going to develop in, let's say, 20 years? I'm mainly going to upload data that doesn't need security such as movies, tv series, and various other things that takes a lot of space but otherwise isn't too valuable. I originally intended to create a cloud storage that I can mount via Files as a virtual drive, format it as an encrypted filesystem, and use it as an additional storage. Now I see that this isn't possible and there's no universal free software client that can encrypt my data on-the-fly without syncing it first. http://www.extremetech.com/extreme/173108-researchers-crack-the-worlds-toughest-encryption-by-listening-to-the-tiny-sounds-made-by-your-computers-cpu What computional power will those companies have by then? Quantum computers, maybe? http://venturebeat.com/2014/01/03/the-nsa-is-racing-to-build-a-quantum-computer-capable-of-cracking-strong-encryption/ Once uploaded, you can never take your data back for sure. Yep, I learned this from Facebook.
Re: [Trisquel-users] is Laptop Ibm X60 Mini Tablet supported by libreboot?
I can't recommend GLUGLUG highly enough. I purchased one of the X60s laptops soon after GLUGLUG was launched (I like to think it was one fo the first :)) and the level of service has been top notch ever since. Since that time they have expanded the supported hardware list and have provided gratis updates to libreboot for my X60s machine and the other supported machines. The please ask before ordering statement you highlight demonstrates this. They are asking you to contact them before placing any order to ensure the service they offer is what you need for your machine. This ensures you don't pay for something that is not what you want or need. This demonstrates respect to you as a potential customer. Remember also, GLUGLUG is affiliated with the Libreboot project and so they don't even expect you to purchase one of their machines. They can install Libreboot for you on a machine you buy separtely. Another denmonstration of their level of service. Even if you drop into their irc channel #libreboot, they will be more than willingly to assist you in your own efforts. This has been my experience at least.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Librebooted Macbook 2,1
Thanks a lot for your input! I was thinking of writing some documentation for the trinquel.info wiki about running Trisquel on Macbook, based on the stuff you informed us, but I don't know if it would be acceptable due to Macbook being an Apple product. What do you folks think?

There always isn't a configure file to run. If there is a configure.ac or configure.in present, you need to runautoconf and then follow the normal procedure. Besides that, always read the README.

[Trisquel-users] Plasma 5
Hello I am using the Plasma Desktop with Trisquel. Is there a way to upgrade to the new Plasma 5 desktop? And if yes how?
[Trisquel-users] New Updates: Opensource/Free FPS standalone mod of Xonotic (ChaosEsque) version 57 etc.
Release 57: More buildable furniture. More buildable doors. Rotating doors nolonger gib by default at low dmg rates if stuck against an obstacle. (dmg rates over 35 will still gib by default, this is all set in the g_door_rotating... etc cvars, you can set_temp_for_type them in your mapinfo file for your map ofcourse). suggested_*level for oil, water, lava etc just like foliage (so you can set defaults for your map) You can now flood maps with chemical, and methane seas, enegy hits above the chemical will cause an energy blast, bullet shots, and hits, will have a chance of causing a small explosion above the methane sea, explosions cause larger explosions in the methane vapour. Download: http://sourceforge.net/projects/chaosesqueanthology/files/latest/download No java direct download of version 57: http://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/chaosesqueanthology/Rel_57/XonoticChaosEsqueAnthologyREL57.iso?r=http%3A%2F%2Fsourceforge.net%2Fprojects%2Fchaosesqueanthology%2Fts=1429925638use_mirror=liquidtelecom (For those wishing just to update Xon/data/, the pk3's you'll need are the z99bla.pk3, the z9_buildable buildings pk3, and the z9-xmod-mapresouces pk3, you know where to get them (same place as last time)) Game is fully opensource/libre, media and code.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Pulseaudio increase Cpu temperature
apt-get remove pulseaudio. Alsa works fine, no need for pulseaudio. Its a solution in search of a problem. All of lennarts stuff seems to peg CPU.
Re: [Trisquel-users] New Updates: Opensource/Free FPS standalone mod of Xonotic (ChaosEsque) version 57 etc.
sshots(sshots of some stuff)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Pulseaudio increase Cpu temperature
If i open an audio file with Rhythmbox the CPU increase again. rhythmbox ressurects pulse probably. Just use alsa. Pulse is just a needless extra abstraction layer.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Librebooted Macbook 2,1
So I created a wiki entry condensing all of the information on this thread: https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/macbook If it's not too much to ask Eemeli, it would be wonderful if you could update your kernel to the latest version to see if these issues persist. According to h-node, updating your kernel would fix the Touchpad issue, for instance. Cheers!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Plasma 5
That's still to hard for me. If this is the only way I'll have to wait until it comes from the trisquel servers one day. If it does at all...
Re: [Trisquel-users] Librebooted Macbook 2,1
I could not get Unity to work. I do not know if it's because of a lack of 3D acceleration or because I just didn't manage to configure it properly. I followed the advice of https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/how-install-unity-desktop-environment-and-create-session-entry-trisquel-70 on an almost fresh install of Trisquel 7 on the macbook. When I log in after choosing the Ubuntu session, I get an error message about +space (which is my hotkey for Synapse). After that i cannot move any of the windows, and there is nothing resembling a start menu in any border of the screen. In fact I could not even find anything giving me the option to log out. I had to right click, open a terminal on Desktop, and kill Xorg to get back to the display manager. I have only ever installed Trisquel 7 (the default one, with GNOME desktop) on this machine. Youtube worked well using html5. I have not installed Gnash of any other flash player. I tried a few HD movies of various qualities and they play smoothly. One thing I noticed is that the speakers are several orders of magnitude better than on the ThinkPad x60s. However the fan is very loud because the machine runs hot, so it's a compromise. Maybe this can be fixed a bit by using PowerTOP...
Re: [Trisquel-users] is Laptop Ibm X60 Mini Tablet supported by libreboot?
Yeah but they don't explicitly say it's not supported the way they said the X200 tablet wasn't. Besides, the T60 installation offering also carries the ask-before-ordering note - and we all know that Libreboot works well enough with that laptop for Gluglug to have a T60 model.

I does seem as it's loading each time I type in a letter, and its annoying as I need to type everything in the other way round. there have been a lot of folks having similar issues with keyboard and most of them solved it by setting Keyboard input method system to `none' in the gnome-language-selector. mao!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Delete KDE Programms
Well, maybe you should've installed plasma-desktop or kde-plasma-desktop instead of the entire KDE 'suite' when you were installing KDE. Anyway, I guess you can now either reinstall the OS and install (kde-)plasma-desktop instead of the full suite, or just remove the unwanted apps (i.e. KMail) without reinstalling the OS.

you don't!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Ubuntu 15.10 and above moving to Snappy instead of DEB. What will the Trisquel team do?
So what will this mean? I'm guessing those who want the traditionally small size of everything outside the large-file-media-filled ~/ can stick with APT-dpkg and those who want Windows-style ability to install an app without thinking of dependency hell at the expense of HDD space can opt for Snappy? If so, that'd be good since the choice of a major distro offering the Windows-style ability to install an app regardless of dependancy is more or less nonexistant - and I'm sure there are people out there who want such a hoice.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Plasma 5
Trust me - compiling is very easy. I'll give you a tip - check this command sudo apt-get build-dep name of application to build mao!

[Trisquel-users] A repository for Free Javascript?
I really like LibreJS, and I like how it's allowing web developers a coherent way to free their javascript. I also feel much more secure running LibreJS, as it disallows nonfree javascript from running on my machine. But even if a web developer conformed perfectly to the protocol of LibreJS and freed their javascript, it would still be trivially easy to insert malicious code into the javascript, and many users of LibreJS could still become the victims of malicious javascript code. This is why I believe there should be a large repository of Free Javascript that web developers can borrow from. For example, there is a ton of free software available for Trisquel users to install, but only a subset of that is available in the Trisquel repository. I, for one, almost exlusively install software from the Trisquel repository. And I'm extremely reluctant to install software that isn't, even if it *is* free software. I feel that once a program has made it into the Trisquel repository the likelihood of intentionally malicious code being inserted into a program becomes nearly nonexistant. It's also, likely, withstood the test of time to make it in the repo. But there is plenty of alpha free software out there that isn't in the Trisquel repo. And that is considerably less secure. That is my analogy of javascript on websites. Even if it does conform to LibreJS it is still potentially highly insecure. If there were a repository of free javascript and a corresponding browser extension that *only* loaded javascript that were in the repository, then we would have the added benefit of running javascript that is not only free, but also much more secure. Thoughts?
Re: [Trisquel-users] is Laptop Ibm X60 Mini Tablet supported by libreboot?
I already email them to ask them. I'm guessing they want you to make sure LCD panel is supported since not all x60 tablets LCD are.
Re: [Trisquel-users] is Laptop Ibm X60 Mini Tablet supported by libreboot?
After a while on hanging out with the wonderful guys at #libreboot IRC, I believe I found a way to make sure this machine is the one it says without having the seller to run commands. I haven't tested yet, but it seems one could input the serial number and see what components was built in with. Hope fully it will tell me the LCD panel too :) http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/partslookup I already asked the seller for the serial number. Fingers cross :D
[Trisquel-users] Re : vpnbook.com - A free VPN service
I think we can all agree by now that there's no perfect privacy online. The whole point is to get as much privacy as possible/manageable. Which is a legal right. From there, Tor is not perfect either. It's slow, and some (many?) exit nodes are wired. Plus, for the average user, online behavior gives away some decent data. To really use Tor properly, it's not convenient for daily use. It feels more adapted to special situations. As for a VPN, at least it can run most of the time without too much headache. It's indeed not perfect, but it's at least something. Online behavior remains important. VPNs cannot make online connections completely anonymous, but they can usually increase privacy and security (from Wikipedia). Mainly thanks to encrypted data. Some metadata can be figured out, but the data itself is still encrypted. So, free vs non free VPN ? Chances are that if it's free, you're the product. Which can be also true if you pay for it (but less likely, since there's an incentive not to do so). Is there a way to know if such a company leaks data or not? It seems very unreasonable to rely solely on online users reviews. It's like buying tap water marketed as a super remedy to all pains in the old west. How am I supposed to know that I'm actually logging into a real service? And to know if my data is safe or not? As for the legality of such tools, the legislation in europe and north america seems to not go in the right direction. Thankfully, freedom and privacy are taking more space in the public debate. I'm reading about no log VPNs right now, I don't know yet how legal it is, but it seems safer.

I've also suggested this in the past,[1] and I agree completely. [1] https://onpon4.github.io/other/kill-js/
Re: [Trisquel-users] Is anyone here from China?
I just discovered why was the download speed so slow. I used the Copy Link function instead of Share, which generates a much longer URL that's very slow (somewhere below 100kB/s) to download. Don't know why is this happening.
