I'd hit that +1 button ten times if I could!
Re: [Trisquel-users] I saw a post about mozilla is only going to provide security updates for thunderbird
Updates are delivered to Gecko HTML rendering engine (which is why Thunderbird recently got updated to v45, the extended support release) but no new features. I like Thunderbird's straightforward design but I stopped using it. It is very slow and insecure as it is very bloated. Enigmail is great but I can use Mutt with GnuPG encryption which I like best in some respects. As for mobile K-9 Mail is very good. It has the charming mascot from Dr Who and is quick and easy to use, and is in F-droid. I think Thunderbird is a reasonable email client (especially compared to WebMail like Hotmail) but I like a more lightweight email client without the risk of a malicious email taking control of the computer.
Re: [Trisquel-users] RMS approved online shopping
Certainly you should go to a local business to support your community. But I don't think that Stallman's word is law. It's not a cult after all and "Stallman approved" is not necessarily much better. I have no qualms about using PayPal once in a while (although I dislike Amazon as they mistreat their employees) etc. Use what is best for you and how you feel comfortable. Support cooperatives and ethical business if you want to. But if you find that difficult (too expensive?) then it's your choice.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libre storage device?
^ The Nitrokey looks interesting. What I would like to see is a (internal) solid state drive running free software. Preferably, such a device would run only very simple software to make auditing much more simple and to minimise the quantity of bugs in the software. The device would need to be flashable only with hardware tools so that malware wouldn't be able to arbitrarily upload malicious firmware (e.g. the way in which BIOS firmware can be trivially compromised by anyone who knows how and the same goes for all HDDs and SSDs on the market today). As far as I know, such a device does not exist. I would definitely use a Nitrokey as OS storage, if I trusted it and I could just boot from USB that way. I am not sure if I trust it though just from skimming over their website.
Re: [Trisquel-users] What brand / size of flash drive would you recommend ?
"Sure it' more reliable" An HDD would probably not survive a drop from, say, a desk (especially if it's running.) Something using flash memory would be more resilient to such a thing. So it depends on the definition of "reliable", LOL. :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Do this wifi cards work with free software?
The ralink and the broadcom won't. As for the Atheros one this dood reports on hnode that it works -> https://h-node.org/notebooks/view/en/1085/X54L/1/1/Asus/A-platinum/2011/undef/alphabetically/no/amd64/undef
Re: [Trisquel-users] What brand / size of flash drive would you recommend ?
It depends on how you're using it. Hard drives generally wear down by spinning up and spinning down (e.g. when you shut down the computer) and to a lesser extent by other more random factors which gradually cause an increasing number of bad sectors, but are generally unaffected by repeated writes. Flash storage is only worn down by writing to it, but there's a fixed number of writes that can be performed on each part of the storage, and it becomes useless once that limit is reached. So, basically, if you're leaving your computer on most of the time (like a server does), or if you're making tons of writes all the time, a hard drive is hands-down better than flash storage. But if you're only making occasional writes, constantly turning your computer on and off, and generally subjecting your computer to more physical stress (like sudden movements), flash storage can last much longer than a hard drive.

[Trisquel-users] Do this wifi cards work with free software?
hi everybody, I got a HP Mini 110 and the wifi card doesn´t work. So I changed it but I didn´t know about the BIOS´s DRM. There are only 3 wifi cards that work with this model: -Ralink RT-3090 802.11b/g/n WiFi Adapter module -Atheros 9285G 802.11b/g/n 1×1 WiFi Adapter module -Broadcom 4312G 802.11b/g WiFi Adapter module I know this thanks to a guy in SuperUser https://superuser.com/questions/1102045/why-i-can%C2%B4t-change-the-wifi-card There is no support of coreboot for this netbook, but I just wan to know if on of these es free software compatible (the RT-3090 is not) I´ve tried searching in h-node, but I don´t know which other names do these cards have Thanks in advance...
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libre storage device?
yes use nitrokey https://www.nitrokey.com/
Re: [Trisquel-users] RMS approved online shopping
RMS doesn't use credit cards. IIRC, he only shops from sites that allow some semblance of privacy and take cash via snail-mail. I can get why-- when it's snail-mail, the transaction is just between the buyer and the seller-- only they know. When there's PayPal or something, there's a third-party that can snoop and record to their heart's content.
[Trisquel-users] Libre storage device?
Is there anything like a Libre external storage device? I am running a T400 with Libreboot. I started wondering about potential issues with USB memory sticks and external USB hard drives or SSD drives. Is there anything I should be concerned about if I would like to use any of these storage devices on my T400? I don’t have enough knowledge about how these work and if there are potential issues with firmware etc.
Re: [Trisquel-users] The future of Libre Computing: Crowd Funding Campaign Starts Now
I am very excited about EOMA68 and I am very happy to be able to back the project. Finally something that is Libre for real! The Hope video was brilliant!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Hello from new member
Thank you. At first I thought you wrote "enjoy your newfound software freedom while you have it", LOL!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Hello from new member
Thank you. I will try out the 33mail.com. Looks good. So far in the last 7 months I haven't had any problems with spamming or legit email being recognized as spam. I am more careful signing up for stuff and I rely much more on pulling of information than pushing. In the past I would sign up for anything and everything but now I will mainly actively visit websites or use an RSS reader. Now I enjoy getting very few emails! I had 30 thousand emails in gmail and I spent hours and hours manually purging my inbox. It was interesting going through all that stuff. It triggered lots of memories and it was fun. I kept 15 thousand and saved it in mbox format. I did not export/forward any of them to protonmail. I was not sure if I would need any of the gmails again. Actually in the last 7 months I only needed info from the old gmail ONE time. There was an email address that I forgot. Therefore I imported the mbox into a local Evolution client today and I found the address. While I was going through my gmails I wrote down every contact/address/service I would need to change to protonmail. It was interesting to see how much I had been relying on gmail and Facebook for logins for all kinds of pages and services. Tentacles going everywhere after eight years of use/abuse. It took a while but I kept unsubscribing stuff and moving to protonmail and when I thought I was finished I saved the remaining to mbox and deleted my gmail account. The files I needed from gdrive I moved to Owncloud/Woelkli and to jottacloud. I saved my personal videos from youtube and uploaded to jotta. I didn't do any email forwarding whatsoever from gmail to protonmail. I did it all manually and I enjoyed the process. So the process of moving wasn't too difficult but it was time consuming. But I enjoyed it. I realized I had to cut the cord completely instead of just deactivating my Facebook and forwarding gmail to protonmail. I needed to get rid of it and start fresh. I am glad I did.
Re: [Trisquel-users] The future of Libre Computing: Crowd Funding Campaign Starts Now
embroidery panels are also 1.5mm thick (the plastic ones), you might get away with using them on the LCD lid, but not the base. a custom PCB at some point with SMT LEDs and components on it... there's room for another power cable at the other side... i did think of paper mache with resin for the casework, problem is casting them into molds... getting them out... yeah, it'd be a big project. the compartment i *think* is 8mm x 60mm x 90mm so one of those really short (embedded-style 2.5in SATA SSDs) ones would fit, remember you have to get a USB-to-SATA converter as well.

Shouldn't this be asked on libreplanet-discuss mailing list instead? There are people that are related to the FSF there and even RMS himself sometimes answers there. signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part

[Trisquel-users] RMS approved online shopping
I know Richard stallman is against Amazon. Is abebooks.com a good alternative to Amazon for new and used books? What's the best online web store for bicycles parts and accessories? That isn't Amazon of course. Is Newegg and tiger direct best alternative to Amazon for electronics?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Hello from new member
My ONLY issue with leaving Gmail is that most non-famous providers (specially if you host your own mail server) are classified as spam by default. That means you can send email, but unless the receiver explicitly allows your address to pass, it will go unnoticed. For personal use, it's annoying, for professional use, it's a problem. Thanks for the 33mail info.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Hello from new member
Welcome, and thanks, I didn't know about Linux Voice or Protonmail.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Hello from new member
Yes, welcome. I'd be interested to know if the process of moving from gmail was difficult? Were you able to keep a copy of your past mail. I understadn protonmail is quite limited in its mailbox storage. You may be interested by http://www.33mail.com/.

[Trisquel-users] Hello from new member
Hello everyone. I became a member today and I am very happy to be here. I am a recent convert to libre software and hardware. I started out at age 15 in 1983 with a Sinclair ZX Spectrum and until the mid 90s I thought computers were the most exciting things in the world. However since the mid 90s I thought the whole scene got more and more boring. Faster and faster boxes running boring OSes and apps. Even though I have been working in IT since the mid 90s I haven't experienced the same excitement I had during the Sinclair/Amstrad/Amiga days. I have been using Windows since the late 80s but it was always all about convenience. I remember running Minix from a 360 kb floppy disc around 1990 and since the late 90s I would also install a Linux distro (which I now of course would refer to as GNU/Linux) about once a year to try it out. However there would always be something that didn’t immediately work out of the box and I would scrap it after a few hours and install Windows again. Luckily I (re)discovered Richard Stallman last year and understood what I didn't understand (and didn't really read) about GNU in the 80s and 90s. Now I am again super excited and I am trying to learn and implement as much as I can for freedom both in the digital world and the analog world. There are so many things I previously took for granted and it was all about convenience at the expense of freedom and happiness. My new journey started at the end of 2015. I am trying to be as Libre as I can both concerning software and hardware. Some of the things I have done so far: - Got an Lenovo X200 (without Libreboot), a Penguin Wireless N USB Adapter, installed Trisquel 7.0 - Bought a Lenovo T400 (with Libreboot) from Minifree - Got the ThinkPenguin VPN mini-router - Deleted my google account that I had been using heavily since 2007 (email, gdrive, calendar, search etc etc). Switched to Protonmail, DuckDuckGo and OwnCloud. I also deleted my Facebook account. Getting rid of Google and Facebook was a very interesting process. - Stopped using my Galaxy S6 smart phone and get a dumb phone instead. Will possibly install Cyanogenmod at a later stage. - Got rid of my Xbox One - Supported the EOMA68 crowdfunding project. This is a very exciting project. - Started buying/reading the «Linux Voice» magazine - Got involved in the Norwegian Unix User Group and I am getting to know some great people. They hosted Bradley Kuhn in Oslo in June and his talk «Tales from 20 Years of Copyleft Enforcement" was great. I am looking forward to participating on the forum. I have read lots of great threads and I have already found answers to several questions I’ve had during the last 6 months.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Screen resolution changed after changing it in a program
I've reset the game's config file. I have no issues when I quit it now, but I still want to be able to change the screen resolution only when this or that program is on (and change back when I leave it). I'll retry for SuperTux.
Re: [Trisquel-users] The future of Libre Computing: Crowd Funding Campaign Starts Now
That video was not porn but gave me a boner. Seriously speaking, you were phenomenal explaining it's possibilities, I really find this project a revolution and I'm sad because I'm not in condition on helping the project economically, I will try to get the word out in order to help though. My most honest "good luck".
Re: [Trisquel-users] Screen resolution changed after changing it in a program
It seems reloading my config (thus the xrandr command) gives me back non-mirrored display. But the resolution is still off (too big).
Re: [Trisquel-users] What brand / size of flash drive would you recommend ?
onpon4 and Magic Banana: Does that mean that a HDD is still more reliable in the long run?
[Trisquel-users] Screen resolution changed after changing it in a program
I use i3wm, and here's what I've put in my config file: exec_always --no-startup-id xrandr --output HDMI2 --left-of LVDS1 The problem is, aftertrying SuperTux and changing the resolution, it changed for the whole computer. I remember managing to change it back in the game. But now the same thing happened while trying openxcom (non-free assets, but the rest is), yet I can't change it back. Unfortunately I can't even remember how I did it since before that I changed the in-game resolution so many times without trouble. Of course, I could restart the computer. I started to refresh my i3config file, but no success. I also remember having a screen assignment change when on and off the Ultrabase (it's a Thinkpad), which I didn't solve yet. But if I can reset the xrandr display without trouble, this might solve half of the latter issue, and the whole of the first one. Alternatively, can I script a specific resolution for when the game is turned on, and when off, back to the latter config? Then I'll be able to play full screen, full speed, no CPU screams, and keep my standard screen resolution when not playing.
Re: [Trisquel-users] The future of Libre Computing: Crowd Funding Campaign Starts Now
Looks nice. I personally like a matte finish more, but that's one f the nicest things about it, it's infinitely customizable. I mean I was just thinking of engraving stuff on the cover lid (yeah, like that fruit thing, which could be switched by a nicely designed banana silhouette). But since I have better taste than that, I could put the banner of House Trisquel, or Debian, or my face engraved in it (with a stupid grin), or all of these of course. Btw, do you think it's reasonable/possible to build a placement for another drive in the future? I mean can I attempt to add such a thing? I assume it's not as simple as putting holes and a connector in there.
Re: [Trisquel-users] What brand / size of flash drive would you recommend ?
Flash storage usually comes with some embedded firmware that controls where everything is written to and tries to avoid writing to the same places over and over again. Eventually it's not going to succeed, and how quickly that happens depends on how much empty space the flash storage has and what wear leveling technique is used. But decent flash storage should be able to last a couple years, at least, with the frequency of writing you might expect from GNU/Linux.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Distorted desktop graphics after system crash
I believe the compositing manager can be enabled/disabled using the "dconf Editor" (or with 'gsettings' from the command line): the key is called "compositing-manager" and it is in org.gnome.metacity.
[Trisquel-users] Re : What brand / size of flash drive would you recommend ?
Almost certainly: USB sticks quickly die if some sectors are frequently rewritten... and that typically is the case of /var on a GNU/Linux system. Hard disk are made for such workloads.
