Install it with $ sudo dpkg -i /path/to/file.deb or graphically using gdebi. If you are missing dependencies you will have to install those first. This is not an ideal way to install software. It is better to use the package manager. However, if you want to get lightdm working this is probably the quickest way until it hits the Trisquel 9 repo. Alternatively, you could use another display manager for now. Slim is already in the repo: $ sudo apt install slim signature.asc Description: PGP signature

I don't think that we will modify Ubuntu's version of abiword. We did modify it in Flidas, but only to address a bug which has been fixed upstream. Our version of lightdm-gtk-greeter will be a little different from Ubuntu's, but only for cosmetic purposes, not freedom issues, so it should be fine to use Ubuntu's version until Trisquel's is ready. Once it's in the repos, "apt update && apt upgrade" will replace Ubuntu's version with Trisquel's.

Maybe you need a newer version of Gparted and try to fix the problems (if any) with both partitions. I never use legacy versions of disk utilities (like those in Trisquel) for such critical jobs. I recently used latest Gparted to fix an NTFS volume which has been "sentenced to death" under Losedows and retrieved all data. (Though I had to go to Losedows to run "chkdsk -f" as the finishing touch to make the disk usable again.) I sometimes use the official Gparted Live, based on Debian sid. Though it enables contrib and non-free repositories by default, it doesn't come with any non-free software (included in the ISO). So as soon as you boot into the Live environment, disable the contrib and non-free repositories and you should have a free/libre Live environment. apt and dpkg are pre-configured, so if you need additional disk utilities, just download and install them from Debian's main repository.

I notice that as well as the two data partitions on the drive there is a third item coming up in Caja called "WD SmartWare". I assume this is some kind of proprietary software launching off that first EFI boot partition. Could this be causing the problem? From memory, it didn't a few years ago when I was using the non-HFS partition to store GNU/Linux .ISOs and such.

Thanks everyone for your support! i didn't knew i'd receive this friendly community on trisquel forum, so i'm more than pleased for your effort. Hope we get to our purpose. As i have already said in a comment, i've already obtained trisquel 5.0 64bit so technically i'd be more than done if we found 5.0 32 bit. I've also said 5.5 but that version seem to be even more lost than the other and it's a point release anyway so i could miss on that.

Thanks for your advice. I'd try that but unfortunately i'm a newbie in terms of coding or compiling things. Sometimes compiler versions or the needed libraries might be missing and that would make the original code unworkable unless someone modifies it.

I agree, that's why i haven't stored/archived any netinst version of any distro because they are incomplete and in some cases even won't work, but as for regular iso versions, they still work without internet connection. In this context, the only thing you'd need is compatible hardware (BIOS non UEFI) or a compatible virtualization enviroment. As for additional software, it's true that you don't have access to the original repos anymore so the only option would be to re-compile them from old sourcecode versions, which is indeed a pain but we are dealing with an historic OS so nobody is intended to do that, unless they really want. My actual project is to collect the operating systems itself, but i'm also working and i'm planning to work on a programs/software collection. I already have a good archive on windows apps but i should look in the future to do some linux ones too so we could run some extra software on old distros.

Thanks for your response Tebaldo, I've already set up those torrents some weeks ago (i should have tell that before), but they have no seeds, these are mostly dead torrents. I've been able to download 5.0 64bit version iso from a slow torrent, so in that term i've been lucky. I'm still missing the 32bit version and it hasn't shown any seed since then. Also someone told me that netinst version has seeds but these versions are very incomplete and deppend on external repos to be complete or to even work. External repos which are mostly dead or has only incompatible software versions, so i don't think that's suitable for my collection. Regards.

I see, so they are quite recent incidents.
