I just found some of the major issues:

That page refers to Trisquel 3 beta...

So if I edit the wiki to say that Trisquel 8 is released, then it is so? :)

interesting, what does this page mean then?

it says there are fresh beta images on documentation. scroll down and you
will see it.

You can run Trisquel 8 without systemd as init, e.g. when you upgrade from
Trisquel 7 to 8(using upstart). But there are some dependencies with certain
packages like dnscrypt (probably more). At some point i couldnt shut down
anymore...

Not sure if systemd is good or bad, it works on Trisquel 8. I just have a
weird feeling about it.

Trisquel 8 is in Beta? I see no proof of this...

Well from what I know, systemd is too complex compared to runit and sysvinit.

If you wish to know more about systemd's vulnerabilties, ask Luke the eoma68
dev. He knows far more than I.

he did however at one point mention two huge security flaws that went unfixed
for long periods of time,

here is one example:
https://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/06/29/systemd_pwned_by_dns_query/

and here is linus' thoughts on systemd:

http://www.zdnet.com/article/linus-torvalds-and-others-on-linuxs-systemd/

and here is another security issue:

Re: [Trisquel-users] I noticed that trisquel beta is out.

2017-07-27 Thread calmstorm
Well, there are people devs, who disagree with that statement due to it being
done behind closed doors. meh...

once again though, I trust eoma68's dev Luke.

I don't understand how systemd restricts freedom.

There is hardly a piece of software you can use without dependencies.

How is that bad?

Systemd is not an init is a set of tools. So most desktop environments are
using those tools. Avoiding doing the same work twice or more times.

Also, by using systemd over a long period of time it is gonna be safer than
having lots of fragmented distributions.

Bugs and security vulnerabilities are easily found when there are more people
working towards improving the software.

As you said you don't trust systemd but I don't really see a reason not to.

I have seen the same thing happen in education that CalmStorm describes
happening to video games downthread. This happened during roughly the same
period of time.

I can agree to disagree with you. We're fine. No angry ad hominem slinging
debates from me.

I'm just so tired. I'm also so sad about losing so many friends over

You be you. I wish you well.

Congratulations on the Beta release, Ruben! Keep up the good work.

What security issues? Perhaps it can be fixed.

Also, systemd is free/libre software, so at least it has all the
essential freedoms of practical/functional data/work in question (the
software, that is, systemd).

What about the security issues of systemd/stability issues?

also, gnome is crap and so is kde.

We shouldn't make everything require systemd because of the security issues
it has + that is a way to restrict freedom.

I really don't trust systemd... that's about it.

Re: [Trisquel-users] I noticed that trisquel beta is out.

2017-07-26 Thread albertoefg

I like systemd though :) there are many reasons.

1.- I like that GNU/Linux world is becoming more standardized. When I started
using it 2 years ago, there where a lot of init systems. Lots of default
desktops. Lots of way to distribute software. Now suddenly everything is
becoming systemd/GNOME/Wayland/Flatpak

This is so good. The power of the community is going towards making a few
things great. Instead of a lot of "good-enough"

And I don't use GNOME. I use i3.

The other options will swill exist but the defaults are gonna be really good
for the majority. Specially the new ones :)

2.- systemd has lots of great options and tools. It is not a init. It is more
than that.
It might not follow Unix philosophy. But Unix philosophy isn't a law. And it
has some flaws.

3.- It is so much faster than when I started with Ubuntu. My parabola boot
time is awesome.

Re: [Trisquel-users] I noticed that trisquel beta is out.

2017-07-26 Thread noordinaryspider
My understanding is that systemd is so far upstream and gets its claws into
so much that posts like this are just going to depress and distract Ruben and
really should go in the troll lounge.

But what do I know.

It is also still extremely controversial and people can get stuck with the
debating and things that can be done just don't get done.

Belenos uses Upstart. Flidas uses systemd because that is what is upstream.
There are other distros that don't use systemd and other developers who care
about freedom and are working as hard as they can as fast as they can.

Free Slack would be an option as would Parabola as would limping along with
less-than-perfect. I don't like it either.

Re: [Trisquel-users] I noticed that trisquel beta is out.

2017-07-26 Thread calmstorm
I didn't understand the last two sentences, but to be honest, I don't use
gnome or kde. They both are too much when it comes to how much battery life
they drain.
Also, I use lightweight desktops. I am not sure what mark shuttleworth plans,
but he doesn't seem to like systemd much either.

Re: [Trisquel-users] I noticed that trisquel beta is out.

2017-07-26 Thread albertoefg

Systemd is gonna be really hard to be avoided.
GNOME and KDE are developing for it.

Even devuan took months to be released.

I don't think the amount of time and effort it requires is worth for a
project like Trisquel.

With cares about easy of use for home and office.

Systemd works great for them.
