When I interviewed former KCBS/KCAL anchorman Paul Magers, we chatted about
how the news studio is in the valley instead of TV City because
logistically it would be a nightmare dispatching people from the Fairfax
District. No quick access to freeways, clogged roads, tourists everywhere.

Pasadena real estate is extremely high. In 1999 I sublet a one bedroom
apartment in an 80-year-old building in South Pasadena. It had a leaky
roof, dangerous wiring, no parking, and a rickety floor. At $500 a month,
it was overpriced. The same apartment with no major modifications now rents
for nearly $2500.

The Valley will almost certainly be where the Tiffany Network relocates,
but there’s no romance or glamour attached to it.

“Live, from the Valley near Hollywood...”?

From reading the LA Times article, CBS is eventually going to sell
Television City. CBS doesn't get much use out of it, the land will continue
to be expensive, and they will be able to use the revenue to cover for a
bad quarter. If they were determined to keep the building they would not
have brought on a real estate brokerage firm. The building was built for
black & white production and has to be frequently retrofitted for
technology changes. The cost of upgrading to 4K might not be worth it to
 them.

As far as getting the building historical status, a historic marker on
the edge of the property should be enough. The real historic artifacts are
the shows and they are still mostly accessible to the public. The building
they were shot in is not as important.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Quick review: The Opposition with Jordan Klepper

2017-09-29 Thread Steve Timko
I think I'm going to check out of The Opposition for a month or so to see
if Klepper can't find his voice. Oddly enough, Klepper comes out of
improv, but he can't shake the frat boy persona. He is trying to play a
conspiracy nut but he comes across as Craig Kilborn's younger brother.
There's one or two solid jokes each show, but much of the rest of the show
is him floundering.
For me, the strongest part has been the two alt-right gay guys, a parody of
Milo Yiannopoulos. They are so over the top it's almost offensive. But they
were able to inhabit comedic characters. I wonder if they would work better
as hosts?
His interviews have been mixed. The Washington Post op-ed editor kept
cracking jokes and showed that humor should be left to the professionals.
Others were better but Klepper never clicked with any of them like Colbert
or Wilmore could.
Wlmore took a few months to find his legs and maybe Klepper should get the
same chance.

My memory may be playing tricks, but it seems to me Colbert started
like a house afire. The first CR had the "truthiness" bit. They knew what
they were doing from day one.

I've always found a little bit of Klepper goes a long way. Plus, we've
got Colbert and Meyers, and if TDS can maintain what they did Monday night,
that will make the new show even less necessary.

[TV orNotTV] OT: Los Angeles loses another rock station

2017-09-29 Thread Kevin M.
100.3fm The Sound will become Christian station K-LOVE, because why the
fuck not?

I gave this radio station every opportunity to build upon the old KMET 94.7
legacy, but despite hiring some of the best DJs in the city, they played
the same 30 songs from the same 30 artists as K-Earth, KOLA, KLOS, KCAL,
and on and on. So to all of you who wanted background music in the waiting
room of your dentist's office, you have one less choice. For the rest of us
who want actual variety, we still have no terrestrial choice.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: Tony Romo to be CBS sports analyst

2017-09-29 Thread Jim Ellwanger
I watched some of the Thursday night game on Amazon Prime with the "UK English"
audio feed, which had soccer announcers Ross Dyer and Tommy Smyth on the call
of the game. It had been advertised that it was specifically geared to
international viewers who were not necessarily familiar with American football,
although they really didn't do much explaining of the rules while I was
watching (portions of the 1st and 2nd quarters). It was fun to hear some
different voices and phrasings, but for next Thursday's game when "my" team is
involved, I'll probably watch with the regular announcers.

2017-09-29 Thread Joe Hass
Having gotten Romo twice in four days due to the Packers schedule, I would
say this take is more due to the fact Romo sounds genuinely excited doing
his analysis, which can be interpreted as a fresh voice if you're not used
to it (or a desire to neuter the little mongrel if you're not as much of a
fan).

Well, I had this pop up in my timeline last night. I honestly have not paid
attention to the broadcasts, other than to see if they were protesting. I
did not have the volume up for Thursday night's game. There were several

Re: [TV orNotTV] CBS to sell Television City?

2017-09-29 Thread Kevin M.
It is prime real estate. Two decades ago, before they built a mall behind
the adjacent Farmer’s Market, the property — while not worthless — wasn’t
worth the hassle of selling. Now it is.

It might be tough for people who don’t live in history-deprived Southern
California to consider a building historic if it was only built a half
century or so ago. But the “mid century modern” style is quickly
evaporating in a part of the country it once dominated (Google the Stahl
house to see perhaps the most iconic example of it). Mostly it is because
the buildings weren’t designed with functionality at their core... they
were designed to evoke the sorts of dreams people have about this place if
they’ve never been. When you heard a game show announcer say “From
Television City in Hollywood...” the dream expanded. But as John Lennon
once crooned, the dream is over.

As far as getting the building historical status, a historic marker on the
edge of the property should be enough. The real historic artifacts are the
shows and they are still mostly accessible to the public. The building they
were shot in is not as important.

[TV orNotTV] Re: Send me your Erik Estrada questions by 4:15 p.m. Pacific time

2017-09-29 Thread Diner
The late Robert B. Parker, author of the Spenser detective novels, told a
story of how when he objected to Robert Urich being cast as his hero in the
"Spenser For Hire" series, the producer told him that if he didn't like
Urich, they would go with Erik Estrada instead.
Parker replied "I think Urich will be just fine."

Re: [TV orNotTV] CBS to sell Television City?

2017-09-29 Thread Adam Bowie
It's a trend in London too, although that is driven by some extreme
property prices. The BBC sold its iconic Television Centre to developers.
There is still some studio space, but also a lot of luxury homes on the
site.

Meanwhile ITV is working on redeveloping its London Studios which are on
the Thames near Southbank. Inevitably, the planning application is for very
limited studio facilities, and lots of luxury apartments.

Both of these were relatively central London studio facilities.

(Sidenote: there continues to be an insane property bubble in London for
excessive numbers of luxury properties, many of which are almost certainly
traded as part of international money laundering operations, or
international million/billionaires.)

The result of all this is that if you want to go to a TV recording in
London, you often have to head out of town to studio complexes like Elstree
or Pinewood.

[TV orNotTV] CBS to sell Television City?

2017-09-29 Thread Kevin M.
For 3/4 of a billion dollars, they are considering it

http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-cbs-television-city-20170928-story,amp.html

NBC Burbank was my home base, but I have fond memories of TV City, too. I
spun the Price Is Right wheel backstage, watched several tapings of Craig
Ferguson’s Late Late Show, and slept in a soap opera actress’ dressing
room. That said, the facility desperately needs an upgrade. Many of the
stages are not sized for the sort of large-scale tv that people expect now.
The electrical system is stone-age, and the roof leaks.

I would join a campaign to make it a historic landmark if it would help,
but it didn’t work for NBC Burbank. Time marches on.
