Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: The next domino tobegone

2017-11-29 Thread Henry Fung
Not sure if this is a rights issue or not (if so they should say it) but
the wholesale erasure of the Keillor content was disturbing. I commented it
would be similar to Netflix not just canceling House of Cards or Amazon
ending Transparent but deleting the shows completely and pretending they
never existed. I was not a fan of HBO purging past Louis C.K. content
either but he was 99% of the content of the show. APHC had other performers
and the Writers' Almanac exposed Americans to various poets. It's no
different than when Joe Ricketts bought the -ist city news sites and
deleted the content, which engendered much media concern for the work lost.

The answer to the question, which was added to the LA Times article, was
that he was in rehab. His brother Ron apparently was also in rehab in the
80's.

According to the LA Times, Magers never resurfaced after January.
http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/tv/la-et-st-paul-magers-news-20170329-story.html

As advertising revenues continue to drop many stations are jettisoning big
name, big dollar anchors. It's possible that he was off due to contractual
reasons or for negotiation purposes, never got a deal worth continuing
over, and retired rather than keep going. The era of the seven figure
anchor a la Paul Moyer is over.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Debate II

2016-10-10 Thread Henry Fung
Martha Raddatz specifically interjected several times to force Trump to
answer on Syria. Other than ringing a loud buzzer or repeating "your time
has expired" repeatedly like what happened in the California senate debate,
both candidates are going to keep talking past the limit. The debates
really need to be longer - three hours at a minimum, with allowance for ten
minute intermissions between the first and second hours - but given only 90
minutes of time, they did the best job possible, and better than Lester
Holt who was just bowled over.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Gretchen Carlson sues Roger Ailes for sexual harassment

2016-07-21 Thread Henry Fung
Laurie Dhue, whom no one has heard from recently, made a statement that she
is writing a book and invited the Fox attorneys to talk to her.

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2016/07/21/laurie-dhue-shops-roger-ailes-tell-all-memoir.html?via=twitter_page

Glenn Beck is right, that this could spin pretty quickly to a Cosby
situation. I wonder, though, if the book could be edited and released while
Ailes is still relevant, since it's still possible Ailes takes the money
and is never heard from again.

Re: [TV orNotTV] SportsTV: College f-ball bowl scheduling leads to sucky ratings

2016-01-04 Thread Henry Fung
It was business as usual here in California as well, aside from those
agencies/companies which normally had the entire week between Christmas and
New Years off. Sure, Christmas Eve is usually a half day (or earlier) but
not New Years.

As far as the scheduling, the old Chick-Fil-A Bowl at 7:30-8 pm ET had
decent viewership and was good background programming at bars and
restaurants. From Wikipedia, it got ratings in the 5-7 range despite not
being one of the BCS bowls, and the timing for Atlanta was ideal because
bowlgoers could simply ring in the New Year following the game (as opposed
to the Cotton Bowl which ended at 10:30 pm CT). I think the ceiling for a
New Years Eve game will likely be a 10. Maybe the old BCS system, of
staggering bowl games out on weekday nights, may work better.

For 2016/17, you have the odd situation of New Years Eve with championship
games and New Years Day bowl games on Monday since January 1 is a Sunday
and that's reserved for the NFL. I for one would have wanted to see a
college championship qualifier than the meaningless Sunday Night game.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Chuck Todd reportedly back to MSNBC

2015-07-24 Thread Henry Fung
MSNBC is going to run into the problem that doomed it when it was
America's NewsChannel: people in this country don't watch rolling news.
They might get some more ratings for a short period of time but in a year,
their ratings will be lower than when they were the liberal antidote to Fox
News. It's a shame because in countries like Britain, rolling news does
quite well. Fortunately many markets can get BBC World if they want to
watch a real news channel, but I would like to see something like BBC News
24 geared for America (the old Headline News was close, but not quite).
