I started to see posts about a new science fiction “museum” soon to open in
Santa Monica, but the more I see of it, the worse it seems.

Photos of the replica sets look like they were built by my middle
schoolers. Posts on their social offer cryptic things like “a big name
comic will be at our opening night party” but not reveal who. Oh, and they
brought in an “expert” to determine whether their building is haunted… ugh.
It all feels… well… half-assed and a little loopy. I hope I’m wrong and it
turns out to be great.

I called Dick Clark Productions. I was hired five hours later. Worked on
roughly a dozen different game shows in five years.

I’ll bet they don’t offer me a job teaching the class.

Yeah, the appellate court made the only decision they could make, and the
trial judge allowed the stupidity, but the prosecution never should have
done it.

One thing that put me off the Galactica reboot was that I appreciated how
many African Americans were featured in the original cast, and in the
reboot they all but vanished. Carter took what should’ve been a minor role
and made it prominent through shear force of acting talent. He took words
that weren’t important (and in many cases not well written) and made them
important. That’s a skill.

[TV orNotTV] Quickie Review: Conan O’Brien Must Go

Agreed. I get, for instance, that Taylor Swift is currently an “it girl”
too, but I personally don’t understand the appeal. However, just because
she’s not my cup of tea doesn’t mean I think she’s either ugly or
talentless; I’m just not buying what she’s selling.

I personally thought Buffy the Vampire Slayer (both the movie and the
series) was contrived, poorly produced, and barely acted, but that doesn’t
mean I think Carol Baum is ugly or talentless. But she does seem to have an
embittered disposition, and I’m glad she was not one of my professors in
college because I don’t believe she has anything to teach me.

Not that it matters, since the numbers they release still aren’t

[TV orNotTV] Quickie Review: Franklin

Did any of you see the John Wayne movie where he played a German freighter
captain in WWII? How about when Wayne played Ghengis Khan? Or when Sean
Connery played a Russian? Or a Spaniard? Yeah, as in those instances,
Michael Douglas makes no attempt whatsoever to sound unlike himself in his
portrayal of Benjamin Franklin. I suppose it is better than if he attempted
an accent, but it is distracting.

I know in these enlightened times, television and films are produced for
global audiences, but at the end of a long day, not everybody wants to read
subtitles while people speak in foreign languages. I actually enjoyed the
first episode, but I don’t know that the story was made better by forcing
audiences to hear Michael Douglas do that to the French language.

[TV orNotTV] Star Trek Discovery season five

I’ve nicknamed the series “volume up volume down” because it feels like I’m
adjusting the sound level every few minutes, as the show cannot resist hard
transitions from subdued dialogue scenes to explosive action sequences.

It took me until the fifth season to really understand what most annoys me
about the show. In the film “Tomorrow Never Dies”, James Bond discovers the
dead body of one of the great loves of his life, aka Teri Hatcher, and is
devastated. Moments later, he’s in a chase sequence driving his BMW from
the back seat using a remote control touchpad on his phone. And he’s
laughing and couldn’t be having a better day. Put mildly, Bond did not
waste a lot of time grieving. It felt wrong and it made me wonder if that
was a choice made by the actor, the writer, or the director. It made me
believe that Bond just doesn’t give a sh*t. Or those in charge of the
franchise don’t give a sh*t.

And that’s Discovery. The crew is tasked with hunting down the most
dangerous Deus Ex Machina in all of history. If it falls into the wrong
hands, the universe is doomed. But as the captain is flying around in her
space suit chasing the bad guys as explosions and certain death await her,
she’s having the time of her life. Or later when she’s on a Star Wars
speeder bike clearly stolen from George Lucas’ garage, and a landslide is
hurtling towards them threatening to take the lives of tens of thousands of
villagers, she’s cracking jokes.

The characters are angry or on the verge of tears, then suddenly smiling
annd laughing and whooping it up. In the future, nobody takes things too
seriously.

So why should I care about their peril? Why should I get invested in the
story or the characters when they clearly don’t? In their attempt to make
Discovery a fun space adventure, they made it bipolar. The characters care
about something only if doing so furthers the story. Emotions aren’t felt;
they are contrived. Consequently, I end up hate-watching this series
instead of watching it.

The jurors in the criminal trial had no choice but to find OJ not guilty
based on the evidence actually presented, as well as the way in which the
evidence was presented. The sequestered jury members did not see everything
the rest of us saw. Reasonable dedicated viewers of the circus all
concluded that the police framed a guilty man, but the jury was really only
allowed to focus on the flawed evidence handling and then-unfamiliar DNA
evidence. The highly paid defense attorneys spun everything to OJ’s favor,
and the underpaid district attorneys didn’t do what they needed to do.

By contrast, the civil trial evidence was presented very differently by
very different lawyers. Even if the burden of proof had been the same as a
criminal trial, OJ would have lost the civil trial.

As we near the 30th anniversary of the murders, time has offered a bit of
perspective. The OJ trial paved the way for prime time shows (both
“reality” and fictional) with extended story arcs. It also made DNA
evidence so common that shows like CSI and NCIS didn’t have to waste
exposition teaching the viewers about it, which meant they could do more
story and character development. What it didn’t do was change any aspect of
the criminal justice system, nor did it lead to much needed reform in the
LAPD or DA’s offices. What it did do was provide money for the lawyers who
work at The Innocence Project.

Yeah, I watched every possible minute of the trial, and yeah I wrote a blog
which evolved into a book about it. And, yeah, that’s how I got to know
Aaron Barnhart, and that’s how I ended up in this group. I met most
everybody involved in the trial and Kato even followed me on Twitter. As an
intern, I sometimes chose the courtroom clips that Geraldo Rivera used on
his CNBC show when he was in LA. I believe that an embittered Robert
Kardashian leaked the autopsy results to me and others in an attempt to
sabotage the trial.

My personal belief is that at least one of OJ’s kids woke up to the sound
of the murders, and at least one of them knows exactly what happened, and
one day (sooner rather than later) they will come forward. I believe at
least some of the Kardashians also know exactly what happened, but it
didn’t serve their own self-serving interests to come forward.

No, I’m not a lawyer, but Jeffrey Toobin is a lawyer, and I am more
informed than he was about the OJ trial, and frankly my book was better
written than his. That said, I’m ashamed I wrote my book, and I’m ashamed I
read Toobin’s.

We sat through the new episode today… it wasn’t an episode; it was a few
interviews with people. The first four episodes deserved to stand-alone.
This week’s episode didn’t feature in depth journalism. To me, the logical
next step was to confront the people who would go on to hire the convicted
child sex predator on more TV shows AFTER he was convicted. Because that’s
the story… the deeply flawed system that not only allows criminal behavior
but endorses it. Instead this week’s episode was just to invite back people
previously interviewed to discuss the “impact” of the documentary and how
it was received on social media. They’d have been better off just letting
the documentary speak for (and stand for) itself.

[TV orNotTV] Quickie Review: Sugar

Many have tried creating a noir detective set in the present day; few have
succeeded. After two episodes, Sugar seems to succeeding. My only gripe so
far is that Sugar’s backstory isn’t as interesting to me as the writers
want it to be. But the main mystery is a good one.

Yeah, it’s very much like the cheesy old Roman epics. Everybody (including
the kid) is overacting to the point of distraction. It’s not a bad story,
but I can’t tell how good the writing is when Obi Wan Kenobi is constantly
gnawing the scenery.

Watched the full series this week. Some of the details I knew as it
happened, others I learned a few years ago, but there was a lot I did not
know. The names of the people who wrote letters to the court supporting a
pedophile (who was recorded admitting to the crime) and trying to blame the
victim was disheartening.

Until now, I thought the worst thing that ever came out of the “Nickelodeon
on Sunset” building was “The Chevy Chase Show.”

I wonder how much the Disney executives are praying they don’t produce a
second season focused on the Disney Channel?

[TV orNotTV] Reluctant Traveler recommendation

Not sure if many (or any) watch the travel series hosted by Eugene Levy on
Apple TV, but I enjoy it, due almost entirely to Levy’s personality. I
normally run screaming from travel shows starring people who are generally
ignorant about the places they visit, but Levy is just likable.

The most recent episode about France gets special notice for anyone curious
about how Joan Collins is holding up after all these years. I recommend
watching the episode before you Google her age.

The movie upon which the series was based was a horrible remake of the
Wizard of Oz only set in a train and including machine guns. I wouldn’t

reminding everybody is that her response was geared towards the 33% of the

tolerate) her inane banter, it would be a failure. It pandered to those

I worked on the very short lived Dick Clark hosted (but not produced) game
show “Winning Lines”. It took over 12 hours to produce a single episode.
“Challenge Of The Child Geniuses” took longer than that… the second place
contestant literally collapsed from exhaustion after the winner was
announced. “Greed” took a couple hours to produce an episode.

I found myself in Hollywood on Saturday for the first time since pre-Covid.
I was walking in the rain from the Farmers Market to Canters Deli for
lunch, and was inundated outside CBS TV City by people wanting me to
participate in “the Trials.” The kicker? They wanted me to pay to play. I
told them I’d consider it if they paid me $1,000 upfront. They were puzzled
by the very concept.

[TV orNotTV] Quickie Review: Faraway Downs

I’ve always wanted to like the directing style of Baz Luhrman, but I never
have. Allowing him to take six episodes to retell the same story he told in
a two hour movie makes me like him less.

Note to Hulu: Putting a note at the start of the series about how much you
appreciate and respect aboriginal people in Australia does not let you off
the hook for racist portrayals of aboriginal people.

That said, Nicole Kidman doesn’t age, apparently.

I stumbled upon Aaron 30-years-ago. He and I were both blogging before
blogging was a thing. His focus was Letterman; my focus was on the OJ
Simpson trial. I remember asking him for guidance uploading/attaching
pictures when an embittered member of OJ’s inner circle  Kardashian
<\cough> leaked the autopsy report to me. We subscribed to each other’s
email lists. Aaron turned his writing into a career, whereas I just became
another online lunatic ranting and raving about this and that.

good, but not great), but if I had to pick a comic to sit down to dinner
with who would guarantee that I’d fall out of my chair laughing, he’d be a
top candidate. He was just a naturally funny person, and the handful of
times I got to share a room with him, I felt blessed
