[U2] Deleting print queue items in SCO Unix at command line.

2004-11-16 Thread Neil Charrington
Hi,

I have a client who is having a problem with their printers. It is a long
time since I had to support SCO Unix to this level so I am sorry if this is
trivial.

The printer is stuck. I send prints to the printer and they are just
adding into the printer spooler queue. Can someone tell me how to clear the
queue please? I don't want to keep any of the items in the spooler, except
the printer definitions of course.

TIA

Regards,

Neil.

RE: [U2] [UV] [OT] Writing key .anything to type 19

2004-11-16 Thread Tony Gravagno
Starting to go OT here. David, please forgive, as I shifted your first
quote around to maintain context.

I think it was AT T who architected unix. Obviously you have
never tried to read a hidden unix file? Quite a number of resource
files are named as hidden files and if you wish to read them then
 there isn't much choice.

I confess I wasn't thinking that someone may want to see hidden files.
I was off-base on this one, but I'd have the same response if Lothar came
back to tell us this is data for use in his business application.

(I checked at dictionary.com, No entry found for architected)

Yes, but according to this link there are about 209,000 references to
This non-word prior to mine in Google alone.
http://www.google.com/search?num=50hl=enlr=lang_ennewwindow=1q=architect
ed

Also, please see http://www.askoxford.com/concise_oed/architect where
the word architect is acknowledged as a verb in relation to
computing. (That may be one of the only official places on the net,
but I read the OED has a reference going back to the 1800s, if you're
willing to pay to see it.) I'm not overly fond of the trend toward
verbing
in the English language either, but you have to admit that especially in IT
we
verbigate and adjectivize an awful lot. (That was abusive in itself.)
Having familiarity with several languages, I think English has become
the lingua-franca of our day primarily because it's so flexible.

I don't recall Lothar mentioning these being keys. They are
 files within
a type 19 directory structure. AFAIK a .sbc file is an sb client
saved session (I may be wrong).

Quote from Lothar:
I'm trying to read a text file with a key of .lesskey.sbc

You had a good point to start but let's not be too Picky...

Tony
Your source for uberishly architected pasttensified verbification

RE: [U2] Deleting print queue items in SCO Unix at command line.

2004-11-16 Thread Claus Derlien
Do they add up in UniVerse/Unidata spooler or in SCO's spooler ?

If the jobs are stucked in U2 spooler i dont know what to do, since i have
never ever experienced
that problem in my years with universe :-)

if they add up in SCO's spooler simply stop spooler, go to spooler folder,
delete unwanted entries, restart spooler, you prolly need to be root to do
that!

Since i am a linux guy and we dont have the best relationship with SCO these
days i cant help you
with layout of SCO spooler, but it should be either in
/var/spool/...somewhere... or /usr/spool/..somewhere...

[U2] Can I change VOCLIB to DIR type file?

2004-11-16 Thread Josh Marcus
I am interested in changing our VOCLIB file (and other files we use to
store UniQuery paragraphs) to a DIR type file. It is currently a hashed
file. Is there anything I should be aware of when making this change?
Will it cause any negative effects?

We are using UniData 6.0.11 on Tru64 5.1a.

2004-11-16 Thread George Gallen
I could see one use being having a third party program
manipulate a VOCLIB entry. I say manipulate rather than
maintain files, because if you put an entry in VOCLIB
you have to put a matching pointer in VOC (if you want
to run it directly from the command line, with the
exception of the methods recently discussed).

[U2] Error - Array Index

2004-11-16 Thread karlp
AIX 4.3.3
UV 10.1.2

What are the possible causes of this error that causes an abort to TCL?

Program ED, pc = 4EA4, Array index out of bounds

This is the only information we get and it happens about once or twice a
day whether we are editing a record in a file or a source BP after a
minute or two of 'I'nsert operations. Sometimes it happens at a FORMAT
command, too. There's no apparent pattern.

2004-11-16 Thread Clifton Oliver
I frequently do this on UV. (Note--the VOCLIB or a PL file; **NOT** the
VOC file!) It makes using non-U2 editors a lot easier. I use UltraEdit
on Windows and TextWrangler on Mac. Both have Open/Save via ftp.

Performance? Minor hit when invoking paragraph as the READ in the VOCLIB
now requires an extra Unix (or Windows) fopen as the record is a file.
But I haven't seen a noticeable degradation.

Now doing that to the VOC file where all verbs and keywords are looked
up for each TCL (ECL) command would be a different story.

[U2] PCL5/6 Universe / AIX printer setup question

2004-11-16 Thread Lee Bacall
Folks,
I've been struggling to find a solution to get a complex PCL string from
UniVerse on AIX to the printer without stripping out some of the escape
sequences. (The print routine works just fine on other systems - it's not a
PCL question)

The problem we have encountered, is that when a complex set of PCL escape
sequences is sent to the printer, including fonts, bar codes, box drawing, etc
- all using PCL5/PCL6 command sequences some pieces don't print properly.

What is bizarre, is that the boxes and bar codes are working properly, but the
fonts print in courier.
I've tested this by just printing fonts, and they work just fine, but when we
have a complex page (often over 10k), things don't happen properly.

I suspect that there may be a timing issue.
(I wonder if it could be a network issue).

if the width gets too long, UV will break it and it will

Re: [U2] Can I change VOCLIB to DIR type file?

2004-11-16 Thread Thomas Derwin
You'll use more disk space (8K minimum per record on Tru64 Unix by
default; if the record is larger than 8K, then disk will be used in
increments of 8K).

It's also possible, but unlikely, to use up all the namespace that Tru64
allocates for record ID's in the Unix filesystem. We found this when a
buggy program wrote thousands and thousands of records to a DIR-type
file.

If you're using Unix commands, Unidata record locks aren't checked, so
more than one user can try to update a record at the same time, but only
the last one out will win.

Bottom line: in a reasonably normal Unidata environment, you should be
fine switching to a DIR-type file.

I was off-base on this one, but I'd have the same response if Lothar
came
back to tell us this is data for use in his business application.

(I checked at dictionary.com, No entry found for architected)

Yes, but according to this link there are about 209,000 references to
This non-word prior to mine in Google alone.
http://www.google.com/search?num=50hl=enlr=lang_ennewwindow=1q=archi

ed

Also, please see http://www.askoxford.com/concise_oed/architect where
the word architect is acknowledged as a verb in relation to
computing. (That may be one of the only official places on the net,
but I read the OED has a reference going back to the 1800s, if you're
willing to pay to see it.) I'm not overly fond of the trend toward
verbing
in the English language either, but you have to admit that especially in
IT
we
verbigate and adjectivize an awful lot.

Kevin King wrote:
I can't say for certain that it would work at all, but if it did I

Hi Kevin,
Thanks for your reply.
I have tested this and found that it appears to work at least on initial
inspection. In other words, I can put a paragraph into a DIR type file,
create an R-type VOC pointer, and then run or PHANTOM the paragraph. I
don't know what the performance impact would be. In the little bit of
testing I did, I didn't detect a noticeable difference. The DIR-type
file I used for the test has 1863 items in it. I'm not sure what else
might be worth testing. Is there a specific usage scenario that you
think might be prone to performance problems?

In answer to your question, the reasons that I want to change our VOCLIB
files to a directory are:

- I want to use jEdit to edit the paragraphs.
- I can see the date and time of last update of a paragraph.
- I can use the unix find utility to identify paragraphs that have not
been accessed in a long time to assist with clean up.
- I can recover individual files from tape backup instead of the whole
UniData file (date and time stamp on individual files would help here as
well.)
- I can apply Unix-level permissions to individual paragraphs to control
access.
- It would be nice not to have to keep resizing VOCLIB files. It's
difficult to keep up with everyone writing paragraphs. I should note
that in our environment we don't use the default VOCLIB file itself, but
rather create a custom file (e.g., XJXM.VOCLIB) for each person writing
paragraphs. Each file needs to monitored and adjusted.
- Our voclib files tend to be hard to size. They also don't have even
growth--people can quickly overflow the files by copying records in.

Thanks again,
Josh

How was the printer setup in AIX? Did you use AIX's printer setup and
specified the printer type or similar printer type? If you did, I
believe that the AIX printing system does send some PCL to the printer
at the beginning and end of each print job. The initial setup by AIX
may be the problem.

if the width gets too long, UV will break it and it will
sometimes break in the middle of code. I was using total
print positioning, so scattered lf's wouldn't matter.

I suppose that if you sent it to the HOLD file, then tried sending it

I have found that AIX gets flaky with some characters, depending on the PCL
command. I had to put some things into macros to get them to print
properly, and as previously mentioned, I recommend using the passthrough
setting for the form queue.

You might find the following PCL Debug commands helpful:

^027s0C - Enable End of Line Wrapping
^027Y- Enable Display Functions Mode
^027Z- Disable Display Functions Mode

The ^027Y will display all characters received instead of executing the
PCL. The first command allows overlong commands to wrap on the printer. I
consider this the last ditch debug to figure out if the data I expect is
actually reaching the printer. I suggest trimming PCL to the essential
problem areas, if possible.

Hope this helps.

Re: [U2] Can I change VOCLIB to DIR type file?

2004-11-16 Thread Clifton Oliver
My own VOCLIBS are not that large, usually 100 items. I see that
Thomas has posted some limits and guidelines for Tru64. Other platforms
will differ. As an anecdotal note, however, I had a client a while back
who had a 30,000 record 17GB SAVEDLISTS file on AIX. With the
exceptions noted below, it didn't seem to cause any problems.

There are two things I can think of that might cause someone concern if
VOCLIB's contained thousands of little files: 1) as has been pointed
out, it uses more disk space as each record must take up the host
o/s's minimum file size for that type of file system. However, most of
the clients that I deal with laugh at me when I mention disk space
anymore; at today's prices, they rarely see that as a concern. 2)
thousands of little files can dramatically slow down host o/s level
backups, copies, rcp's, etc., especially on Unix. So if you do save
everything every night backups, expect them to take a little longer.
But unless you are doing a good job of making sure STACKWRITE is set to
OFF and cleaning up your SAVEDLISTS, COMO, and PH files (or the UD
equivalents), adding a few hundred VOCLIB records shouldn't be that
noticeable.

Of course, every shop is different. Your mileage may vary.

These can have other effects too.

I have my PH file as a type 1. I hadn't cleared it out in a long time,
and it collected around 200,000 Id's. Not much per se. But that was 200,000
very little unix files inside that directory.

Enough to cause a hugh 12-13 hour timeframe when I was setting up a
differential
backup. It had to check 200,000 files in that one directory for changes.

This is on any system, not just t64.

If you do go type 1/19 keep a check on the qty of items.

Once I trimmed the qty from 200,000 down to about 800, the differential check
went from 12 hours to 15 minutes. (I had a few accounts with large PH's)

You'll use more disk space (8K minimum per record on Tru64 Unix by
default; if the record is larger than 8K, then disk will be used in
increments of 8K).

It's also possible, but unlikely, to use up all the namespace
that Tru64
allocates for record ID's in the Unix filesystem. We found this when a
buggy program wrote thousands and thousands of records to a DIR-type
file.

If you're using Unix commands, Unidata record locks aren't checked, so
more than one user can try to update a record at the same
time, but only
the last one out will win.

Bottom line: in a reasonably normal Unidata environment, you should be
fine switching to a DIR-type file.

RE: [U2] Can I change VOCLIB to DIR type file?

2004-11-16 Thread Marilyn Hilb
Rather than changing voclib. Why not just create a new dir type file which will
have all the advantages listed and use the new file (directory) in the R
pointers in voc.

Thanks,

The idea is to keep your VOC as small and as RESIZE friendly as posisble
for performance reasons.
Ideally you would put any items that are more than a few lines long into the
VOCLIB rather than your VOC and use a R pointer in your VOC to access the
VOCLIB items.

Clif, how many items are typically in your VOCLIB? Just wondering if
there's a not recommended past x size consideration to keep in mind?

I'm not intending to hijack the thread, but what is the intended purpose
of
the VOCLIB file? I have one in each Universe account, but in each case it
 has 0 records.

RE: [U2] [UV] Random number (RND()) help

You could accomplish the same thing by something like this.
NUM1 = RND(33000)
NUM2 = RND(33000)
RNDNUM = (NUM1R%4:NUM2R%4) + 0
thus taking only the 4 rightmost digits of each.
You definitely shouldn't do this. Default RNG's are crappy to begin
with and the low-order bytes are the least random. This may give you
an apparent uniform distribution (I'd expect gaps even you nearly
exhaust the period of the RNG), but you'll definitely get hit by
low-order serial correlations.

There's a really good section in Numerical Recipes for C on pseudo
random number generators. There's also a bit about doing 64-bit math
in two 32-bit numbers, which would be especially applicable for the
OP's Win32 implementation. I remember finding this chapter on the
web in PDF format a while back. Hopefully it's still out there.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my post. Based on the information in
your responses, I think this change will work for me in my environment

I am interested in changing our VOCLIB file (and other files we use to
store UniQuery paragraphs) to a DIR type file. It is currently a hashed
file. Is there anything I should be aware of when making this change?
Will it cause any negative effects?
We are using UniData 6.0.11 on Tru64 5.1a.
Thanks,
Josh
