Mike,

The line numbers get messed up in RAID if you have an inline comment
after the include.

This buggers the line numbers

$INCLUDE ARINCLUDE AR.MASTER ;*In line comment

and this doesn't

$INCLUDE ARINCLUDE AR.MASTER

Get rid of the in line comment and the line numbers will be correct.

Talking of debuggers, can anyone remind me how the $INCLUDE s can mess

I had a solution to this once which I seem to remember had something to
do with the configuration or placement of the $INCLUDE lines in the

I look forward to any response

I think if I were supporting that many users, I'd want to insure the system had
the most reliable code base I could. Does not mean you do every upgrade, but
it does requrie an effort to stay fairly current. With that many users, you
probably have a test environment where upgrades could be evaluated prior to

Its usually just that you have to upgrade SB+ at the same time.
The message is saying that you have to be on a newer SBClient but it just
can't do math. I believe its telling you that you need to be on a newer SB+
to go with your new SBClient. You can't rarely upgrade one without the

RE: [U2] [UV] examples of X[n], X[m,n], X[c,m,n] substring extractions and assignments

2005-02-04 Thread TPellitieri
Charles Stevenson wrote on 3 Feb 2005 at 23:16:59 -0500:

I wrote these examples up for our own programmers.
Might as well share them with the group for the
 newbies' sakes.

A caution: these apply to UniVerse. UniData doesn't support the third
syntax (X[c,m,n]).

Also, UniData may give different results, based on BASICTYPE and the Null
Value Handling settings. In BASICTYPE U, it should work as Charles stated.
In BASICTYPE M and P (we are always set with P, as we use SB+), the string
can be reduced or cleared on assignments. According to the help, if Null
Value Handling is on, the X[3] syntax will give a warning, and a zero will
be used. I don't know if it will make it X[3,0] or X[0,3], however.

I put all of Charles' examples in a program and got the following results
(using * before and after the string to show the lack of spaces...)

X: *AB-CD-EF-GH*

X[3]: *-GH*
X[2,3]: *B-C*

X[2,1] = 1: *A1-CD-EF-GH*
X[2,3] = 123: *A123D-EF-GH*
X[3] = 123:   *AB-CD-EF123*

X[2,1] = 123: *A123-CD-EF-GH*
X[2,3] = 12: *A12D-EF-GH*
X[3] = 12:*AB-CD-EF12*
X[3] = :  *AB-CD-EF*

So, remember, your mileage may vary :-

One other thing to watch out for is when you make an account into a Schema
normal, non-sql users, will not have access to the files anymore. If you
want to use the account as a Schema and as a regular UV account you can do
so but you will need to grant permissions to the non-sql defined users.

TypeGRANT ALL TO PUBLIC (I think I got the syntax right).

If you want to limit some people create an SQL user for them and set more
limited permissions.

Then
GRANT Connect and then resources, etc to alternative users. Then you can

List UV_USERS to find the initially configured administrator user. On
our system it is uvsql. I'm not sure if that is a standard or
something that we setup. At any rate, if you haven't done anything with
SQL, there should only be one user in there, but you are looking for
someone with DBAuth privelege. Once logged in as this user, you should
be able to grant CONNECT to whoever. See the Universe SQL reference
(under the GRANT command) for details on priveleges required for
different operations.

Does UD (as does UV) support these alternate syntaxes?:

   X[c,m,n] = substringX = FIELDSTORE( X, c,m,n, substring )

   Y = X[n]Y = RIGHT( X, n )
   Y = X[1,n]  Y =  LEFT( X, n ) functionbally equivalent

Notice how UV's VLIST shows these compilations. They all compile
exactly the same except the last one:

What are you using to connect to the UV database? What is it you're
seeing that they are not moving in the respective direction? Has your
terminal definition file been modified? Check your ...\uv\terminfo\v
directory and see if any of the files have a different modification
date. In particular, look at the vt220 file.

In our case, we had a modification to our vt100 file to fix the numeric
keypad's ability to switch to numeric values when the NumLock key is on.

1. While logged in to UV as my regular ID, I did a LIST UV_USERS

2. I logged out of UV then back in as the HWGDOM\administrator user
and did a LOGTO UV.
3. Next I typed the following commands:
GRANT CONNECT TO HWGDOM\bobw
GRANT DBA TO HWGDOM\bobw
4. I logged out of UV then back in as my normal user id, bobw.
5. From my application account I was able to successfully issue the
CREATE SCHEMA command.

Again, thanks for you help, folks!

RE: [U2] Query about UniVerse database

2005-02-04 Thread Bob Woodward
Hi Avinash.

If the terminal definition files are unmodified then changing them
probably won't help you. If you are interested then look into the
uvtic.exe and uvtidc.exe programs in the .../uv/bin directory.
Everything in the .../uv/terminfo/* directories are the compiled
information files and I would suggest, strongly, that make sure you have
a saved copy of the current files before doing anything.

Where are you seeing the problem? In the editor? At the TCL prompt?

Re: [U2] Unidata core dumps

2005-02-04 Thread Kathy Tymoczko
We're a Datatel client also, and have the same problem. It seems to happen
most often when do UniQuery stuff with i-descriptors, especially
i-descriptors that call subroutines (not necessarily Datatel subroutines,
sometimes the UniData subroutines that are meant to be used in
i-descriptors) and/or are multi-valued and/or are in a file with an
especially large dictionary with lots of large associations. Unfortunately
I have never been able to come up with a specific sequence that causes it
to happen. It happened to me about four times yesterday (doing repeated
queries on the EMPLOYES file), after going for months (if not more than a
year) without it happening to me personally.

At 11:08 AM 02/03/05, you wrote:

I'm running Unidata 6.0.3 on HPUX 11.11. The hardware is an RP5470 (2
cpus, 6GB memory). The application software is Datatel's Colleague and
Benefactor. I have only indirect support from IBM for Unidata (I have
to call Datatel for support).

Datatel first indicates that it may be old compiled code. I find it
all, and recompile and catalog (if needed) all our custom. Recompiled
every I-descriptor. Still get dumps.

Datatel then indicates that it might be level 2 overflow in the files.
I've memresize-d the files and dicts and now udtmon shows no level-2
activity. Still got dumps, but not as frequently.

Datatel then says it might be index overflows. I recreate the indexes
with larger node sizes to eliminate overflow reads/writes. Now there is
none. Still get the occasional dump.

Datatel then says it must be hardware. There are no errors logged. I
know hardware monitoring is working since I was getting single-bit
errors reported 6 months ago and replaced affected memory, and a raid
drive failure 9 months ago.

Last Thursday, I have a rash of failures of unidata in a 20 minute
period. I've got dumps of some of the processes. Not all udt processes
were affected. No hardware events recorded. Of the dumps I looked at
the top of the stack was: U_free_varmem(4012EFC0) from U_freevar+0xA4
(or similar). I did reboot the machine, no problems.

Guide is run nightly on all accounts and their files using Datatel's
WUFA process. There are no broken files reported and no overflow2
statuses.

Last night I find a powerpoint presentation Problem Determination
Techniques for Diagnosing UniData Database and System Issues by Wally
Terhune at the IBM DB2 Info. Mgmt. Technical Conference, Sept 20-24,
2004. There is a page that says Working with Unix core files...UniData
engineering likely at fault I am beginning to believe that I'm
just spinning my wheels.

Having come from Prime Information, piopen, and universe environments
where a dump/failure meant you have a problem, these occasional dumps
are frustrating.

Does anyone have any ideas?

RE: [U2] Unidata core dumps

2005-02-04 Thread Pingilley, Ron
I used to experience lots of core dumps on UV 8 and 9 (DG/ux) when running TCL
selects/sorts that had I-descriptors. I think it was someone on this list that
suggested we look to see if the I-desc's had COMMON blocks in them. Sure
enough, they did. We removed the COMMON blocks, recompiled the I-descriptors,
and had no further problems.

Not sure if UD, or UV10 for that matter, have that glitch, but it might be
worth a look...

RE: [U2] Unidata core dumps

2005-02-04 Thread Baakkonen, Rodney
IF you run the debug versions of Unidata, Unidata techs can read the core
dumps and make sense of what is in them. They are found in the bin
directory:

cleanupd.d
cm.d
kp.d
lib.d
restart.d
sm.d
smm.d
systest.d
tm.d
udt.d

Note the size of udt.d is much larger than udt, as it has a symbol table.
This size difference helps figure out what version you rally are looking at.
This size difference should be noted for all of the above.

The debug do not have the symbol tables stripped out of the object code. So
the dump will have variable's that can be deciphered.

What I did to run these was, backup the original versions, and rename the
debug versions the normal name. i.e.:

cp udt to udt.orig
cp cm to cm.orig
   . etc

Then I copied

udt.d to udt
cm.d to cm

... etc

Now if you stop and restart Unidata, it will be running with the debug
versions.

To go back, copy the udt.orig to udt etc.

The possible downside is that Unidata may run a little slower with the debug
versions. But it is the only way for anybody to make sense of the core
dumps.

This did help us eventually find a problem that was causing core dumps. But
I can't remember what the problem was. - Rod

RE: [U2] Universe CREATE SCHEMA

2005-02-04 Thread Richard Taylor
I had converted normal UV accounts to a schema for one client because it
improved the access via ODBC/ADO. You could then access the data files
externally as SQL tables or normally in UV. Just remember to grant
'public' sufficent access for the normal UV users to work.

You can do SQL statements in a UV account without doing any of this as
someone else suggested.

-Original Message--

Now, if you are talking about *converting* the tables in question to SQL
tables (which allows you to use constraints, but, as far as I can think
of, that's the only benefit), you would probably want to make a complete
copy of the data (or a subset adequate for testing/playing around with).

I have never done this before so I'm likely making some horrible blunder.

I have IIS running and I have a Universe database on top of Windows XP. I have

the same directory as the Hello page is in.

So the hello page just looks something like this
HTMLTITLEHELLO/TITLE
BODYFORM SUBMIT=test/BODYHTML

And the test item just looks like
echo Hello

which seems to work, although I have it created as a .bat file which is
probably not right.

But when I try to make it run a command like
H:\IBM\UV\BIN\UV MYTESTPROGRAM

It complains with a message that UNIRPC32.DLL can't be found in the paths ...
and then it lists some paths.

What is this telling me? And how do I fix it?

OK I did a search on my system for where the UNIRPC32.dll lives and figured out
how to add a PATH variable to the .bat file. So now it doesn't complain about
not being able to find the dll but it still doesn't run the universe routine.

Now I get an error in the event log that says
The description for Event ID (1000) cannot be found... [and it ends by saying]
Message [DBS0043]

And then I get another one similar only it uses Event ID 1004 and Message
[DBS0036]

I have no idea what all of that means.
Maybe I need some way of telling uv how to log me in?
Like I said this is all new to me.
Thanks.

The vt220 file within the terminfo file is a binary file; you would not benefit

You need to create a source file using the uvtidc command. This is a text file
