RE: [U2] UniObjects - read .rtf doc from UV server

2008-07-08 Thread Louie Gouws
Hi Tony,

It is a VB.Net application. Using UO.Net to interface with UniVerse.

The System Administrator must set up a template of two documents. There are
rules on how to do these documents. It is pulled into a richtextbox in VB.
Where bold, italic, bullets etc. can be used. These documents will sit on
the UV Server.

Other users will get these document templates - the application will fill
in the tags (e.g. Date will be replaced with the date in the correct
format, Name will be replaced with the real name etc.)

The user then will have the option to print this document. The completed
document will then (with unique key) be written to the UV Server.

That's about it

Louie

I understand you aren't going to use Word and that you have your
solution.

Just so that we understand how you're using the environment, I'm
curious about exactly what the application for a Rich Text
document is. It looks like you're allowing users to create
templates which are used to populate data. I'm wondering who is
creating the templates and who is consuming the final document -
that would affect the choice of tools.

I've found that very frequently people ask how do I do _this_
when _this_ isn't really the best way to handle the real business
problem. It's the difference between strategic and tactical, and
while some people get a little miffed with some asks about their
approach, sometimes another set of eyes/ears can improve the
tactical approach a great deal - or in this case help any of us
tackling a similar problem.

[U2] OT - Pick mentioned in letter to the editor... [not-secure]

2008-07-08 Thread Hennessey, Mark F.

HIS PICK FOR AN OS IS CLEAR

I read your article about virtualization (Virtualization 3.0, May 15,
page 25, or http://tinyurl.com/5j4dnc) with some amusement. I am an old
Pick database programmer, and Pick has done virtualization since the
1970s.

The Pick OS will load and run on just about any platform, including
Microsoft's. It uses built-in tools to create one of the easiest-to-use
and most versatile 3D relational database models on the market. Yet, it
never merits mention in any of the mainstream media periodicals.

Just about every buzzword and acronym you guys punch out every month,
Pick has been doing since bell-bottoms and afro hairdos were in style.
All the techno-weenies out there owe a great deal of what's happening in
their careers to this venerable OS, yet I'll bet less than 5% have ever
heard of it.

Had Dick Pick not passed away in the mid-1990s, things might have been
different today. But wherever you find a Pickie out there, they'll tell
you that they wouldn't trade their legacy system for all the whiz-bang
buzzword-laden toys in the world. So how about a nod to the good old
days once in awhile?

We just had something chew up two source programs today. We have
restored from yesterday, but that still means 4-5 lost hours. And the
programmer is one of those young guys that works directly to/from the
screen rather then pencil scribling like this old timer.

He still has the latest version of object. Is there a quick/free way to
look at his object code and remind him of the program structure?

VLIST BP FNAME may work, and may not if the source is gone. But it may be
worth trying.

Also, I have a Linux server on my network that has a 300 GB disk. I have
NFS mounts to and from our business system to that Linux server's 300 GB
disk. Nightly at 1am, a script I wrote copies our business database,
including source and object, and customer/vendor data, etc. from the
server to the Linux 300 GB disk in subdirectories named day_01, day_02
day_31 which means we have a month of backups available at any given
time.

I have HTTP running on the Linux server so programmers can point their
browser to it, and select navigate into day_NN/BP/BP to see whatever
source code they just hosed. This has saved hours of restore time for me,
the IT department (yes, my title is IT Director, but I digress).

Just a thought. Easy to implement, even if your server is WINDOWS based
using Sambe instead of NFS. I do both, by the way, but the Samba shares
backup our accountant's tax tables and other spreadsheets daily at 8am
after initial editing is over (she starts at 7am).

HTH,

Karl

Nope. I don't do any data warehousing, business intelligence, or
database development in my current position.

I guess I should have been more specific. I would love to have a job
doing one or all of those things in a current, marketable technology
like Oracle or SQL Server.

I've uprooted my family twice in the last three years for job changes
and I don't want to do it any more.

The only thing i can think of at the moment is use excel as an intermediary

If you are still writing green screen apps in this day and age then you

SAP is using a SQL database. What I've done to automate some of the data
sharing is from the Universe side, I have triggers on certain tables that
execute SQL statements against our SQL Server databases to do what I need.
Inserts, Updates, etc. all work like a charm. I haven't tried it the other
way but I gather it would work with OLEDB or even ODBC if I was desperate.

Re: [U2] OT - Pick mentioned in letter to the editor... [not-secure]

2008-07-08 Thread George Land
I know what you mean, but the concept that Pick did virtualisation in the
70s and that the world would have been a different place if Dick Pick had
lived longer are stretching credibility.

But there is certainly something in the 'nothing is new' analysis. Years
ago mainframes used dumb screens where you typed in a page of data and
submitted it. Then over time the input devices started communicating with
the server on a field by field basis, then logic started to be loaded to the
user's device to run locally. Then we got web pages where you typed in a
page of data and submitted it. Over time the web browsers started
communicating back on a field by field basis and logic started to be loaded
to the user's device to run locally.

And so on...

Re: [U2] OT - Pick mentioned in letter to the editor...

2008-07-08 Thread George Land
Nothing against the data model. But he wasn't talking about that, he was
claiming virtualisation as something Pick did and that the world would have
been a different place if Dick Pick was still with us. He also claimed that
much of what happens today is due to what happened in Pick many years ago,
all of them are a bit of a stretch of the imagination.

As a 25 year veteran of this technology, and someone whose company is
heavily involved in writing new software with U2, I think it needs to be
promoted on it's merits. Amongst those are the data structure and the
ability to fit in with other technologies. There is enough that is good to
shout about without claiming that the world owes everything to Pick.
