Re: [U2] Calling U2UG Members
Hi Brian/U2UG, Now that I work for Rocket, I'm not sure if I should still vote. Thoughts? If I can, I'd like to reiterate the questions I posed this time last year before I do vote. Hi all, I've posted an open letter regarding the U2UG elections to the nominees. I'd love to see more dialogue around these elections as I feel I don't really know what I'm voting for when I place my votes. http://u2tech.wordpress.com/2011/03/15/u2ug-elections-2011/ Along with this, I also wonder how many people on this list are members of the U2UG and how many actually vote? I've never seen any numbers. I know I'm one of two out of the roughly 20 U2 people at my work who know of the U2UG and am the only member. Not the greatest odds. On the positive side, it leaves a lot of room to expand. :) Regards, Dan -Original Message- From: u2-users-boun...@listserver.u2ug.org [mailto:u2-users-boun...@listserver.u2ug.org] On Behalf Of Brian Leach Sent: Wednesday, March 07, 2012 3:56 AM To: 'U2 Users List' Subject: [U2] Calling U2UG Members All, To those of you who are U2UG members (and if not, why not?) - a reminder that the elections for the 2012-13 board are under way. Re: [U2] Calling U2UG Members
Dan Absolutely you should vote..! The U2UG is best served through its relationship with Rocket, so there is nothing to prevent members from Rocket from voting, standing or otherwise contributing. In fact, the more the merrier. (We do have Rocket U2UG members - though many haven't updated their email addresses from the IBM days so will have had their membership paused - otherwise we run foul of the anti-span people over here by having too many bounces when the newsblasts go out). And Wol is right, the main requirements for someone standing for elections are a) that they are/have been for a period a U2UG member at the time of their nomination and b) that they disclose their interests. So in the unlikely event that Larry Ellison signed up and wanted to stand - we feel the membership ought to be told. There's lots more stuff about that in our charter, which is available to view on the website. And regarding your questions, the board has been discussing pretty much exactly those same questions (and more) over the last month leading up to putting together our program for next year.. so any thoughts you or any other members may have would be welcomed. The U2UG is not a secret organisation and we(*) genuinely welcome contributions and ideas from everyone. Brian (*)That's we, if I get re-elected, or they, if I don't. [U2] New U2 BDT
I installed the new U2 BDT (Basic Developer's Toolkit) and attempted to use it. In the U2 resource tab (after I created a server connection) one gets a list of accounts. Drilling in one gets a list of files. These include links ('Q'-files). When I click on one of the program links I get the message: Could not get contents of directory E:\UDAccounts\Dev\@ABO_SYS\BP on server devserver. Error message: Unable to find the directory. Unfortunately, in UD on Windows we use environment variables, so the reference @ABO_SYS is a defined environment variable path. It appears, therefore, that one cannot reference programs and data from links. Secondly, there doesn't seem to be any timeout manager (or keepalive setting) because my RPC times-out because I've set it to do so. I guess this alone makes use of this tool problematic for me. [U2] Global Catalog: Universe vs. Unidata
On Unidata, globally cataloguing a program causes it to run in a separate memory space so that if 10 users are running the program, only one copy of the routine is loaded into memory. From the docs: Multiple users can run globally cataloged programs simultaneously — UniData brings one copy of the program into shared memory. The concept is similar, but there's an additional step. See UV 11.1 Administering Universe pdF, Chapter 18, UniAdmin pdf, Chapter 16, Managing Catalog Shared Menu. Most UV shops in my experience don't bother with it, but I think it's a good tool and not difficult to master. cds On 3/9/2012 6:02 PM, Kevin King wrote: On Unidata, globally cataloguing a program causes it to run in a separate memory space so that if 10 users are running the program, only one copy of the routine is loaded into memory. Re: [U2] New U2 BDT
Hi Bill: BDT uses UOJ for connection which does not support environmental variables. You would have to shell out to get them and convert the files manually. I looked in the manuals and did not find an alternative. BDT does not have a keep alive. The default for a UOJ session is an hour. If you do not do anything in that hour you have to reconnect again. BDT's advance settings do not allow you to change the default even though UOJ supports changing this parameter.
