I can't imagine Dick Pick would have even thought his db would span the

During my career I survived three db conversions only to move on to yet another

I've programmed, administered, managed, consulted and returned to programming

I can honestly say the Pick world has been very good to me...
Even though I did not post frequently I read 99% of what was happening and

cross the street and so far its worked out. But the issue of continuation
of development and support has come up for a second time; along with it the
nature of my character based software and some reactions to UviVerse as a
product. This is an email from the assistant director of the Nashville
fairgrounds:

Subject: ITS Help Selecting New Software
Importance: High
Our Flea Market and Corporate Sales components have been utilizing
proprietary software that is ancient, and without documentation for many
years. It has not been supported by ITS, and there is only one known person
in the Tennessee area that can serviced this software. With the upgrade to
Windows 7, it will not operate. Obviously, we need to purchase a package
that will provide the functionality we need and that can be supported by
ITS. I am requesting a meeting, with the appropriate ITS staff at the
earliest possible time; to identify our needs and possible software packages
that can be installed.

He is incorrect in most of his conclusions, but this is his perception. I
have left behind a number of great systems that are now defunct because
management viewed them as ancient. Does anyone else meet this attitude?
My customer defended the system with the following email.

Ken
Who said our software was ancient? It is not, it aids in insuring the
revenue stream for both Flea Market and Facility Rental, you are correct
that the software is serviced by one individual since he wrote the program,
his name is Dale Kelley and he has other members on his team that know the
software in the event something happens to him. As far as the upgrade to
Windows 7 who said that it will not operate? This is certainly not the
case, the software can be updated to run with minimal effort. You can
contact Dale Kelley if you like, I have copied him on this e-mail.
Thank you for your time
Deborah

Deborah's defense included a small lie about the members of my team; I'm
it. This system is written entirely in BASIC; no procs, no scripts. I
always have the source code on the system; it's theirs to use as they wish.
I would be happy to provide it for review. My question: is there anyone who
would have any interest in taking over this and another government customer
if I should become defunct or inoperable? I know there are some great
people in Tennessee, but these guys could be supported from anywhere.

I would also appreciate any advice on products and time required to mouse up
the screens and present non-ancient images. I intend to arrenge a meeting
with the Assistant Director to attempt to address his concerns and see if I
can sell some services.

Dale

Particularly if you have programs written in different styles over

What formatting tools do you use?

experimenting briefly, Universe BASIC compiler will allow any mix of

So, how are developers mixed case in their code these day? Do keywords,
local variables, common variable, equates follow a standard method?

Is there an easy way to determine if a record is empty?

I have a saved list of a thousand or more records that have record ID's that
interfere with our Ellusian database.

If they are truly empty, I can do house cleaning on them. If they contain any
data, I have to do a different process.

When I AE into a record I get
:AE PERSON 2362

So, it is really empty.

I believe there must be a better way than handling every one of them, but I

trouble with the timeslice approach, though. If your timeslice was 50
ms, after that time everything you were doing got saved and the next
process in line got the juice. There were certain things that released
your timeslice, too, such as IO operations, etc. If you were doing
disk access, and what you were working with got paged out of memory,
you had to go get it again when your turn came around again. If that
took too long, you went through the same thing again, and you might
actually sit there all day and get nothing done. No wonder we worried
about frame faulting. Ah, those were the days...

Try this in unidata:

002 FOR I=1 TO 5
003 SLEEP 0.5

RQM is still supported by UniData, but it's now merely a synonym for
SLEEP. NAP
is a UV thing, with millisecond granularity. SLEEP, in both UV and UD,
like the
*nix sleep command, only counts in whole seconds.

RQM was supposed to be merely a command to release quantuum which
means to pause until I come back up in the time-slicing round-robin.
At some point I wonder if they didn't just replace this with a Sleep
1 but that's not really what it was *supposed* to be.

Re: [U2] Building an Excel File

sounds awesome tony, really. rocket shouldn't launch without it

:-)

Wil, while the OP asked about reading Excel on an iPhone, the
title of the thread is Building an Excel File. That prompted
suggestions for how to create Excel, including use CSV.

Yes, all spreadsheet clients including Excel will open a CSV
file.

But that led to my assertion that CSV is not Excel and that
CSV is not acceptable when people want Excel, though that is a
common belief amongst MV developers because most end-users will
just take what you give them ... and then they'll quietly start
looking for people who will give them what they really want,
Excel. This is a digression that you are welcome not to follow.

About your statements - I'm intimately familiar with internals of
Excel (Office in general), XML, CSV, and related document
standards, and I have no idea what kind of middleware you're
talking about below. CSV has no information about formatting,
it's pure data. It's therefore impossible for any utility to do
anything but autosize the columns, and that's trivial. As I said
above, if all you're doing is opening the file, sure, that should
work, but the result is hardly Excel outside of being text in
columns and rows.

You can't just simply 'change the Excel files into csv files'.
Your statement doesn't survive the first attempt. Excel will
warn you that it's going to lose detail if you do that. Again,
CSV is not Excel. It doesn't provide borders, colors, images,
cell references, merged cells, fonts, type styles, multiple
sheets, named sheets, named ranges, file properties, page
formatting, print pagination, fixed col/row settings, custom
col/row sizes, or data typing. And while you can provide
formulas in CSV, you'll lose them if you save Excel as CSV.

And _that_ is the reason I created NebulaXLite, to allow
programmers to do all of that from BASIC, on any OS, any DBMS,
and with no underlying libraries. It's real workbooks for Excel,
Open Office, and Google docs - when everyone else is ready to
provide a delimited text file.

I think somewhere this jumped the track. No one is
saying that CSV is Excel Rather the OP wanted a way to
read an Excel file on the Iphone. Can the Iphone
natively read Excel files?

I know that it can natively read csv files, because
we're doing it. It puts the csv file into a neat table
with a border, with columns and rows all autosized and
pretty with no effort whatsoever.

So the solution could be simply to change the Excel
files into csv files and voila you have no problem
anymore for the Iphone.

This doesn't address the issue of whether existing
Excel files, or Excel files you receive from others
can be handled.

It only addresses the issue of reading Tables (of
some kind) on the Iphone.

because CREATE doesn't exist in Unidata, at least not at my release.

Al,

Look at the CREATE statement in your documentation. Works for both
Windows and *nix. Frankly, I'm amazed how complicated people are
making this.

OPENSEQ PATH TO SEQFILE THEN
WEOFSEQ SEQFILE ON ERROR
   ABORTM WEOFSEQ FAILED!
END
END ELSE
CREATE SEQFILE ELSE
   ABORTM OPENSEQ AND CREATE FAILED!

How does this create a file? I've always code similar to the method
David Green showed, since that works on all pick flavors instead of
having to change my code every time I move to a different system.

C:\Users\AllenElwoodhelp echo
Displays messages, or turns command-echoing on or off.

  ECHO [ON | OFF]
  ECHO [message]

Type ECHO without parameters to display the current echo setting.

C:\echoc:\buddy.txt
Access is denied.

I've been using DOS since 1.0 - forgot all about pipe didn't it
used to be | ?

btw, even though I'm the admin on my laptop, it will not allow me to
even use notepad to save to c:\buddy.txt

Must be a new windows 7 thing.

On 9/9/2010 10:50 AM, Colin Alfke wrote:

If you had the proper permissions you would have had a buddy.txt file with:
ECHO is on.
in the file. The '' redirects the output to the file indicated (creates it
if it doesn't exist or overwrites it if it does). I use it to create a log
from a batch file:
Date /t batchfile.log
Time /t batchfile.log

The '' will append the output to the file.

So, in the example he would likely want to do the WEOFSEQ SEQFILE to reset
the record (although that will create the file as well so you might as well
just do that...) Now that we're getting picky - the ABORTM statement doesn't
exist in UniData either so you would need to use ABORT or STOP.
