Robert Stuart Boydell stu...@sbcs.com.au 2/4/2012 6:05 PM Hi, Sorry this is off topic, but as it involves a company that some of you may use for job placement I thought it's not too inappropriate. For the upcoming US Super Bowl the job placement company CareerBuilder intend to run TV advertisements using Chimpanzees as unruly office workers. Although the 'fun antics' of chimps may seem harmless, sorry to say there are very sad consequences for them. Previously CareerBuilder has agreed not to exploit Chimpanzees in their advertising and this reversal has no doubt been based on having had good advertising success rate overriding their commitment to desist. I don't need to expand on the ethical implications of this position by a job placement company. If you believe that going back on a promise or cruelty to animals are morally unsupportable please consider writing to CareerBuilder to make your feelings known. Re: [U2] Scripps Networking Services
I think it's a scammer...not sure why they'd be scamming Pick people, but here's why they were off to me from the get go: Incoming call from recruiter was from a blocked number. He advised me that more information would be forthcoming from an administrative assistant at his company. Email arrived from administrative assistant later the same day. It was written in all caps with very poor grammar. The subject line included her name, and she spelled it differently than she did in the body of the email. Jenna vs. Jena. I Googled the company and could not find anything. Closest thing was Scripps Network, which is not the same company name at all. I asked the administrative assistant to send me a link to the company website, and she sent me a link to Scripps Network. Like I said, totally different company name than Scripps Networking Services. Recruiter provided California phone number, but would not return two voice-mail messages that I left inquiring about additional information. I did not send my resume. The recruiter never returned those voice-mail messages. Definitely stinkier than hell. [U2] What a Long Strange Trip This Has Been!
After jumping from lily pad to lily pad several times over the last several years, as my employers have converted from U2 to other platforms, which involved two major moves (CT to VA in 2004, and VA to TX in 2007). I started studying some “current” technologies last summer – .Net (VB C#), SQL, HTML, XML, etc. as I continued to work in UniBasic. About two months ago, my lily pad here was beginning to look quite precarious. I’ve always had a sharply honed sense of self-preservation and saw the writing on the wall months ahead of time, but it didn’t seem to be the case this time around. Which brings me to the point of this email…The director of my current work area (which is rapidly heading towards its demise) has assisted me with getting a .NET position within the company. I didn’t even have to interview for it – a gift dropped in my lap. Truly a gift that I am very excited about, but a little scared too. Pick is my comfort zone – I’ve been doing it forever and frankly, I’m really good at it. I’m going to work in a position working with stuff that I’ve only studied. I can do it, I HAVE to do it, I will do it. I’ll be unsubscribing at some point soon. Just wanted to say “Later y’all” and share my good news. PS: Oh yeah, I’m going to be a first-time grandma in November, so add that to the good news pile. What amazes me is that the Pick/MV community seems to be so anti-book and pro-everything-should-be-free, and this is why we haven't seen any new books in this industry for so many years. And yet the fondness and passion for Jon's works seems to be timeless. If people in this community expressed serious interest in new books and other education material for MV, we'd have them. Heck, a windbag like me can cough up a few hundred pages in a weekend. And with a windbag like Jon, well, we could crank out a book over a session at Starbuck's. ;) I've blogged and written forum postings about the lack of books in this market: remove.pleaseNebula-RnD.com/blog/tech/mv/2007/05/mvbooks1.html All we really need is some sense of visible community commitment and I'm sure we would see new/modern books for Pick/MultiValue just like Linux, SQL Server, PHP, Java, C#, Excel, and hundreds of other technical topics - not just from me or maybe Jon but from many other qualified authors in this community. Look at it this way, a lack of MV books can cost you your job, so it may be worth it to support efforts like this. If your company is acquired and/or you get a new CTO, you may hear: What is this? I can't find a single book on this. We need to replace this with something mainstream. Help foster the creation of a wealth of material and that battle of this war will no longer need to be fought. I had a trigger question last week, and I received some help from the list (thanks!), and I have another question. A member of the list sent me a program that he uses for triggers, and it's really nifty, except it uses a U2 function - SYSTEM(49) - that doesn't seem to have an equivalent in UV. ARGGG. The most important part of this trigger is to get the call stack and write it out so that I know what program is writing this garbage out. Something like this: Procedure is: KEB; pc = 5C; source line = 20 Called from: PRE.KEB; pc = 6; source line = 13 PRE.KEB was the main-line program - called KEB @ line 13. Broke out of KEB at line 20. I need programs and source code line#s. If RAID can show it to me, it's got to be accessible somehow, right? Re: [U2] Worst Case/Best Case
You seem to have completely missed my point. Referential integrity is only ONE reason why SQL is a real RDBMS as opposed to U2. ONE example. There are MANY. It's ridiculous to consider U2's approach with referential integrity to SQL comparable - enforcing referential integrity at an applications programming level is much more time-intensive and error-prone than setting it up at the database level. It's okay to wear your rose-colored glasses on if you want toIt seems that I'm the only naysayer here, and I'm sorry to be playing the doom gloom role, but IMHO it's reality - the writing is very clear on the wall to me that U2 cannot compete with the big boys. It's even less well equipped to compete now that IBM has left the room and a relatively unknown company has acquired it. Just my $0.02, for what it's worth. I've lived in the Pick world since 1988 and I don't want to leave it behind, but that time has definitely come. As soon as my education enables me to join the .NET/SQL world, I'm going to bid a fond farewell to this era of my career, that has enabled me to raise my daughters, straighten their teeth, buy a house, and all of the other good things that have come my way over the last 20 years. I'm with you there, Harold. I don't agree that U2 is a match for any real RDBMS like SQL. It just doesn't have the same capabilities. For example, referential integrity. In SQL, it's there, it's built in, it's an integral part of the system and you can't create orphan records if you set up your relationships properly. In U2, you can do that too, with application programming - lots and lots of programming, which can be (and often is) flawed. This is just one example of WHY you can't compare U2 to other RDBMS on the market - you're comparing pomegranates and pineapples, and when you are done with your comparison, U2 comes up lacking. Don't get me wrong --- I love U2, and my career STARTed in a Pick shop. I'm sorry to see where it's gone over the years. Plus, to all the people out there who keep saying that it's us to list members to convince our companies to stay with U2 instead of migrating away, I say Hogwash. In anything other than a small mom pop shop, programmers do not have ANY input into these kinds of decisions. Management looks at a new and pretty system with lots of bells whistles, and they don't really care what platform is running on - We have to have it. [U2] Worst Case/Best Case
I don't mean to be Ms. Doom Gloom, but I have to disagree with Chuck. U2 has been headed towards a rest home for years. I've worked for several end-users as well as a few U2 VAR's over the years, and it's pretty apparent to me that it's on its way out. I'd really like to look at this Rocket thing as a positive development, and say, YEAHthis is a GOOD THING, but I think it's time to strip off the rose-colored glasses. The ostrich with its head in the sand thing doesn't work for me any more. I wish that wasn't the case, but it is. The three companies that I have worked for since 2004 have either done away with U2 already, or are currently in the process of doing so. * A HUGE multi-national wholesale distributor in the mid-Atlantic region with THOUSANDS of users all over the US - Unidata - they are moving to SAP. * A small division of ACS in Richmond, VA which doesn't bear mentioning (handful of users) - U2 was phased out and its functionality was replaced with SQL/SSIS. * A VAR with about a hundred government clients in TX GA - porting users to new .NET application over the next two years and phasing UV out entirely. These are three examples of a trend which is continuing all over the country. Changing jobs in the U2 world is like jumping from one lily pad to another - no one (that I've seen) is planning to continue a long term relationship with U2 any more. Myself? I've gone back to school and I'm studying .NET development. Over the next year or two, I'm going to bid UniBasic development a fond adieu in favor of an application development If Rocket wants people to pay maintenance, they will still have to port to new O/S releases where needed, still have to offer upgrades with new features, and still have to employ U2 support people. I hate to point out the obvious but they don't have to do anything with your maintenance fees other than provide support. Upgrades are not a given. Rocket does a lot of IBM mainframe work. So does IBM. So, Rocket offering UnIverse and UnIData to existing (read IBM mainframe mid-size) customers is not a big stretch. IBM could've done this for years and didn't. Rocket has a lot of people with :Engineer in their titles. So does IBM. Why is there an assumption that Rocket is going to do anything more than IBM did with U2 (nothing)? It uses built-in tools to create one of the easiest-to-use and most versatile 3D relational database models on the market. Yet, it never merits mention in any of the mainstream media periodicals. Just about every buzzword and acronym you guys punch out every month, Pick has been doing since bell-bottoms and afro hairdos were in style. All the techno-weenies out there owe a great deal of what's happening in their careers to this venerable OS, yet I'll bet less than 5% have ever heard of it. In New Jersey, all the zip codes start with '0'. Add product codes like 012345 and order numbers like 000123 etc and you'll see the leading zeros. When creating and exporting a CSV to eventually be used by Excel, those columns lose their leading zeros as Excel thinks they are numeric. I know that the users can format column and choose Custom etc. I've converted the same CSV into a HTML boxed record and the zeros remain as expected. I've tried prepending the values with an astrophe (single quote) to no avail. The true data (as viewed in Notepad) is exactly as I sent it: 07748,012345,000123 So, any tricks in having Excel leave the zeros alone when clicking on the CSV in WIndows Explorer. RE: [U2] Slave Printing Problem
Thanks everyone for your ideas... I don't know who'all is familiar with AbleTerm, but there are a few slave-printing methods. One is auto detect and another is passthru. Auto detect would not work. Passthru works; the heading what appears to be a control character (a blank space followed by a semicolon). I'm not sure where that's coming from; it's not in the proc. The heading is created as a proc in a separate file and the original proc pulls the info from that heading file. Main proc looks like something like this. HSORT MY.FILE H BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH H HEADING [HEADING.FILE RPT.HEADING] H NOPAGE ID-SUPP DBL-SPC P X Heading proc looks something like this: PQ H HEADING OF REPORT 'L'PAGE 'PLL' I don't know why this would be a problem. When I put a PW in the main proc, it builds the sort command perfectly fine. I am sure glad that I have finally got a solution. Well, if it's a type 19 or type 1 file and it's a Unix-based system, you can shell out, cd to that directory, and an 'ls' of the item's details will show the last date/time it was modified. If the VOC/PROC is being run thru a phantom, you can check the PH file. The ID of the PH file contains the internal date, so you can narrow it down that way. Wow, he's smart! -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Brian Leach Sent: Thursday, January 03, 2008 12:37 PM To: u2-users@listserver.u2ug.org Subject: RE: [U2] date on a pick item Doug Since it's only a single file you're looking at (VOC), here's a low impact way you could timestamp. This will log all changes to an index file, which you will need to clear down periodically grin: 1. Create a subroutine that will return a timestamp AND a checksum when listed, e.g. TSIndex 0001 SUBROUTINE TSIndex(Ans) 0002 * Generate a timestamp index 0003 Ans = (Date() * 86400) + Time() 0005 Ans := *:CheckSum(@RECORD): * : @ID 0006 RETURN 2. Create and compile a dictionary item in DICT VOC called TIMESTAMP to call this: DICT VOC TIMESTAMP 0001: I 0002: SUBR(TSIndex) 0003: 0004: Timestamp 0005: 15L 0006: S 3. Create a secondary index on the timestamp item: CREATE.INDEX VOC TIMESTAMP 4. Create a file pointer to the secondary index: ED VOC TIMESTAMPS 0001: F 0002: I_VOC/INDEX.000 0003: D_VOC The index file created will contain index entries keyed by the timestamp * checksum * id You need the checksum to ensure that any changes result in changed index entries for the before and after image. 5. Enable and build the index and any changes written to the VOC will write a new entry in the index with the current date and time. ENABLE.INDEX VOC BUILD.INDEX VOC TIMESTAMP ED VOC BRIAN I 0001=Hello World FI LIST TIMESTAMPS LIKE ...BRIAN 06:32:44pm 03 Jan 2008 PAGE1 NAME.. TYPE DESC.. 1262629930.186 BBRIAN *39210*BRIAN 1 records listed. RE: [U2] Accessing the OS
I don't know if this is what you need but here's what I do: UNIX.CMD = ls -l UNIV.CMD = SH -c :QUOTE(UNIX.CMD) EXECUTE UNIV.CMD CAPTURING OUTPUT (I don't usually break the Unix and UniVerse commands into separate lines as I did here - I just wrote it that way for easier reading). -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Brutzman, Bill Sent: Wednesday, December 05, 2007 2:11 PM To: 'u2-users@listserver.u2ug.org' Subject: [U2] Accessing the OS From a UniBasic green-screen application (using Dynamic Connect), what BASIC command(s) allow the programmer to execute an Unix command (with parameters) such that something like a SendMail command could be handled. RE: [U2] Deep and long indentations vs multiple exit points
Subroutinize, subroutinize, subroutinize Flying geese should be avoided whenever possible. Those deep indents are nearly impossible to read/maintain later on. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Marco Manyevere Sent: Wednesday, November 28, 2007 10:18 AM To: u2-users@listserver.u2ug.org Subject: [U2] Deep and long indentations vs multiple exit points There has been a lot said recently about styles, standards and good practice and I wonder what your take is on deeply indented routines with a common exit point versus unindented routines but with multiple exit points. I almost always prefer the later and find it much easier to follow. I come accross several routines or GOSUBs that get indented from line 1 right up to the end and I always change that to an early return and remove the indentation. Below are some examples: PROCESS.ID: READ RECORD FROM FILE, ID THEN * Several lines of indented code to calculate DESIRED.VALUE IF RECORDFIELD.NO EQ DESIRED.VALUE THEN * Several lines of even more indented code END END RETURN versus: PROCESS.ID: READ RECORD FROM FILE, ID ELSE RETURN END * Several lines of unindented code to calculate DESIRED.VALUE IF RECORDFIELD.NO NE DESIRED.VALUE THEN RETURN END * Several lines of unindented processing code RETURN Or LOOP READ RECORD FROM FILE, ID THEN IF RECORDFIELD.NO EQ 1 THEN * Processing code END END REPEAT UNTIL SOMECONDITION Versus: LOOP READ RECORD FROM FILE, ID ELSE CONTINUE END IF RECORDFIELD.NO NE 1 THEN CONTINUE END * Processing code REPEAT UNTIL SOMECONDITION ___ Yahoo!
