Re: [U2] Sb Client upgrade from 5.3.8 to 5.5.3

2014-02-18 Thread Michael Martin
We had to import into SB Client 5.4 and then export out of 5.4 and import into
the next revision. I am not sure if there is another way, but that fixed our
issue.

Hi All,

I tried to export my list of Smart Query Definitions from SB Client 5.3.8 and
then import them to SB Client 5.5.3. What I get is this: Error opening file
TUQUERY and it aborts. Is there something that I need to do or not do to get
my Smart Query definitions to move? I have over a hundred and I really don't
want to re-enter them all. :)

Thanks,
Bruce

Subject: [U2] [OT] Interview Questions

This is not specifically a job posting, but I do have ads up on Monster and
LinkedIn looking for talent.

At the risk of confessing too much, I have historically been far too easy in
the interview process. As a result, I have had some less-than-excellent hires
and spent far too much time and money trying to rescue underperforming and/or
recalcitrant staff. Therefore, I'm planning to be much more discriminating
this time around, and am building a series of technical questions to help
quickly identify those that have the right skills, abilities, and attitude for
our team compared to those who may not.

That being said, I have a question for the group:

Technical questions aside, what are the best interview questions you've asked,
been asked, or otherwise heard about that help differentiate between the
candidates worthy of additional consideration vs. those that are not?

Each company is different of course, but that aside I'm hoping to get some
ideas to cut to the heart of the matter as quickly and efficiently as possible,
both for the sake of the interviewer and the interviewee. (My technical
interview is bordering on 200 questions and growing at an alarming pace.) If
there were a half dozen questions to open with that could help set the stage
for what may be to come, that could be very beneficial for everyone in this mix.

Also, in an effort to keep the OT to a minimum, please don't ask me questions
about the positions here. If you have questions, email me directly or through
LinkedIn. I'd prefer to keep this topic on point of your recommended interview
questions.

As of this morning, all of the F3 lookups we have are behaving slightly

The results used to return in a nice, clean white list of data. For
unknown reasons, this morning, the clean white display is now showing up
with each piece of data being displayed within a box, very much the way
Excel displays each cell.

We are unaware of any changes we have made that would do this.

Any ideas how to turn the Excel look off?

Hi Mecki:

No Eclipse based tool currently works for SB+. Of the roughly 2.7
million U2
licenses only a small fraction are SB+ shops. Someday Rocket Software
will
have tool for that was not developed in the 80's for those SB+ shops.

There is a big difference between free and open source. XLr8Editor was
at
one time free and over 700 copies were downloaded. We really do know the
difference between free and open source.

Eclipse was created by IBM years ago and still has many engineers adding
code to the open source project. Additionally, companies like Actuate,
Oracle, SAP, Nokia, Motorola, and RIM are members that contribute code.

U2logic is not a member of Eclipse.org and does not contribute code to
that
project. U2logic is not trying to reach SB+ users per se. However,
those
programmers that slog through code on a daily basis that would like save
a
hour or two a week not having to fight the software to make software.

RE: [U2] SIGDANGER

2008-09-02 Thread Michael Martin
Found this on IBM's website.

http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/systems/index.jsp?topic=/com.ib
m.aix.baseadmn/doc/baseadmndita/page_space_trouble.htm

Paging space troubleshooting
The most common problem regarding paging space is caused by running out
of allocated space.

The total amount of paging space is often determined by trial and error.
One commonly used guideline is to double the RAM size and use that
figure as a paging space target. If paging space runs low, processes can
be lost, and if paging space runs out, the system can panic. The
following signal and error information can help you monitor and resolve
or prevent paging space problems.

The operating system monitors the number of free paging space blocks and
detects when a paging-space shortage exists. When the number of free
paging-space blocks falls below a threshold known as the paging-space
warning level, the system informs all processes (except kprocs) of this
condition by sending the SIGDANGER signal. If the shortage continues and
falls below a second threshold known as the paging-space kill level, the
system sends the SIGKILL signal to processes that are the major users of
paging space and that do not have a signal handler for the SIGDANGER
signal. (The default action for the SIGDANGER signal is to ignore the
signal.) The system continues sending SIGKILL signals until the number
of free paging-space blocks is above the paging-space kill level.
Note: If the low_ps_handling parameter is set to 2 (under the vmo
command) and if no process was found to kill (without the SIGDANGER
handler), the system will send the SIGKILL signal to the youngest
processes that have a signal handler for the SIGDANGER signal.
Processes that dynamically allocate memory can ensure that sufficient
paging space exists by monitoring the paging-space levels with the
psdanger subroutine or by using special allocation routines. You can use
the disclaim subroutine to prevent processes from ending when the
paging-space kill level is reached. To do this, define a signal handler
for the SIGDANGER signal and release memory and paging-space resources
allocated in their data and stack areas and in shared memory segments.

Anyone seen this message and know what it means?

*Warning: Low Swap Space. SIGDANGER received.*

This is on an AIX 5.3 box running Unidata 6.1.13 and it just started
appearing this morning on a few terminals somewhat randomly. The df
command doesn't report any disks in crisis and /ud/temp should have
plenty
of space. Any ideas?

RE: [U2] SBClient problems??

2008-03-18 Thread Michael Martin
If your intuitive help is in the Field Definition on Unidata, this is a
bug that IBM has recognized. I was given ecase bug number 10135.

Hi

I have a problem with what I think is a SBClient 5.0.4 installation.
The
problem is the intuitive help key (F3) seems to have stopped
functioning, What
happens is the process behind the F3 is called but the resulting select
list
is not displayed on screen. This is only in GUI mode, in character mode
it's
works as expected.

The reason I think it's SBClient causing the problem, is that I can log
onto
the same system from a remote PC and the F3 key does function as
expected in
GUI mode.

Has anyone else encountered this? If so any idea on how I can fix this
problem.

Kind regards
Paul Parkinson

RE: [U2] enough with the freaking [ad] thread already!

2007-12-05 Thread Michael Martin
Folks, please move future replies on this thread to U2-community. I'm
sick to death of reading about [AD] tags and Chuck has already politely
asked for this thread to be moved to U2C. If you want my previously
expressed opinion on this continually reoccurring subject then go back
to the Sept 6th archive and look at the get a grip thread.
To move your reply from here to U2C, hit reply as normal and change the

Thanks,

I second the motion.

Is there a Universe command to show all those logged in with their user
ID? I can run UniAdmin to find this out, of course, but the users
can't. What simple unix or Universe command will return this
information?

Thanks!

Can anyone clue me in on how to resolve this error (step-by-step)?

When going to the command prompt and starting udt I receive the
following error:

UniData Release 5.1 Build: (2189)
Copyright (C) Ardent Software, Inc. (USA) 1998 All rights reserved.

Current UniData home is e:\unidata\ud51\.
Current working directory is E:\JENKON\SV\AMI_SQL.
Warning: global CTLGTB file path(VOC pointer file) is different than
current Unidata home path, cannot global CATALOG/MAP in this udt
session.
:

This is an install of an existing system onto new servers and I am
trying to clear up the command line issues.

Thanks for any insight you may have on this.

Steven R. Christensen

Had the exact same problem yesterday installing a new version of Unidata
onto a new server. Rather than change all the VOC pointers we just
uninstalled/reinstalled the database to e:\ud\ instead of e:\IBM\ud71\.

Michael,

Insufficient data.
Number of users? Size of database? Redundancy desired? Ratio of reads to

RE: [U2] U2 University feedback requested

2007-09-06 Thread Michael Martin
I enjoyed most of the sessions I attended. I would attend any session
that Mike Ryan presented. He was as entertaining as he was informative,
right Betty? I did attend the UniAdmin tool presentation. The new tool
will be available with Unidata 7.2. The question was asked about
availability for Universe and there was no commitment other than soon
after Unidata 7.2.

I was a bit like a duck out of water, being that I have a very limited
programming background. I am trying to develop a basic skill set that
will allow me to make custom modifications to our current Unidata
application. I appreciated all the offers of support and advice from
other attendee's.

I just signed on to the listserver yesterday, so I will mostly look for
tips and ask the occasional stupid question.

Wally,

In my first post, I said I thought it was great. I am looking forward
to all the new tools that IBM is working on getting to us. I love the
graphic editor that compiles on its own with its templates you can use
and add to. To those who have used the UniDebugger, the new tools is
similar but better.

I didn't want to give much a way as I think people who can attend
should, plus there was so much information you get a little overload and
don't remember everything.

I am a little disappointed in the flash drive with the event documents.
I was not able to attend the UniAdmin class due to the fact I was taking
the certification testing at that time. Side note: Yea, I got over my
fear of tests (unreasonable I know but we all have our little quirks)
and am now a certified UniBasic programmer and a certified UniVerse
Administrator.

Any way, the UniAdmin class pdf does not show any of the new tool coming
our way. I would have liked more info in the pdfs.
