[Bug 50076] my screen will 'black out' if left unattended even though that option is disabled

2006-06-17 Thread bradley
Public bug reported:

i am using dapper drake.

i have the power management set to never dim or blank the screen.
everything is set to: do nothing, never or 100%

the computer screen will go black within 20 minutes (and is not over
ridden by any other program (eg. dvd player))

if i toggle the power management settings but then put them back as they
were the screen will stop going black after 20 minutes and then will
only do after a number of hours (and the dvd player seems to over-rid
the 'black setting')

if i restart the computer the 'black settings' return and i have to
pretend to adjust the power management settings.

the only way that i have found to shake it out of this 'black setting'
is to FnF6 or FnF7 (which are hotkeys to toggle the monitor
brightness) moving the mouse or hitting other keys to not wake it up.

[Bug 50084] Dell Inspiron 510m: No drag through short touch and hold down

2006-06-17 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
Public bug reported:

Dapper Final, fully updated. Using a Dell Inspiron 510m
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/DellInspiron510m). I'll
attach xorg.conf.

I think that my touchpad is an ALPS using the synaptics xorg driver.

I am taking the list of what my touchpad should do from the features
list of http://web.telia.com/~u89404340/touchpad/ (reproduced on the
LaptopTesting page above).

According to the above page, the touchpad should allow Dragging through short
touching and holding down the finger on the touchpad. I am not entirely sure
exactly what this means but nothing like this description seems to work:
- putting the cursor above an icon, tapping the touchpad (selects the icon)
then putting my finger back down and moving it while retaining contact with the
pad;
- omitting the first tap - put the cursor above an icon and putting my finger
down on the pad and sliding it

Any questions or clarification, just ask.

I think that my touchpad is an ALPS using the synaptics xorg driver.

I am taking the list of what my touchpad should do from the features
list of http://web.telia.com/~u89404340/touchpad/ (reproduced on the
LaptopTesting page above).

Tapping the touchpad with two fingers does not produce a button 2 event

[Bug 50091] kubuntu multiple desktop configuration confusion

2006-06-17 Thread benb
Public bug reported:

In Kubuntu Dapper, there is a problem in the configuration of multiple
desktops. It's a UI confusion issue rather than a real but, but
something that needs to be addressed anyway.

Basically, there are two places to change the multiple desktop
configurations when they should be in the same place. By right clicking
the desktop and going to the multiple desktops tab, it's possible to
configure the number of multiple desktops and to enable desktop
switching with the mouse wheel.

But to configure edge flipping (essentially a part of multiple
desktops), one needs to go to Control Center - Desktop - Window
Behaviour - Advanced.

Until I found the latter, I thought that my beloved edge flip wasn't
supported.

So, I'd like to request that all multiple desktop configuration be in
one place, or at least make it easy to navigate from one to the other.

[Bug 41787] Re: nppdf.so: undefined symbol: XtCalloc

2006-06-17 Thread Conrad Knauer
Version 7.0.8 is out now.

I have confirmed (based on reports originally posted in the forums; e.g.
on http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=187973) that if you download
the Linux version of Adobe Reader from
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html and extract
nppdf.so and use it to replace the one installed by the mozilla-acroread
package (/usr/lib/Adobe/Acrobat7.0/Browser/intellinux/nppdf.so), PDFs
work inside Firefox again.

FWIW, until an upgraded DEB is available to Dapper users (e.g. through
backports), I have made a tar.gz (~2 MB) from that file so people don't
have to download the entire 7.0.8 archive from Adobe (~40 MB)

[Bug 50094] Laptop suspends to Ram when AC Power removed.

2006-06-17 Thread kohlis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: acpi

I have a Dell Inspiron 700m laptop. I have chosen to put the system to
suspend when the laptops lid is closed.

This works fine for the first time, that is the system does not suspend
when the power cod is removed. It only suspends when the laptop lid is
closed. But after resume my laptop suspends to ram every time the AC
Power cord is removed.

1.) Open Power Management (System-Prefrences-Power Management)

2.) under Actions for When laptop lid is closed select Suspend.

3) Repeat step 2 for the Running on Battery tab.

4) apply the changes and close Power Management and close the laptops
lid

5) Once the system suspends, open the lid to resume.

6) Now the system suspends everytime the AC power cord is
removed/switched off.

This is not a critical issuebut its really annoying.

Thanks.

[Bug 46422] Re: Wrong directory for libTix8.4

2006-06-17 Thread dr. gonzo
I too, confirm this Bug.

The way to manually fix it is to create soft links to libTix8.X.X.so and
libTix8.X.X.so.1 in /usr/lib/Tix8.4/ that point to the respective
libraries in /usr/lib/libTix8.X.X.so and .../libTix8.X.X.so.1 -- But
that might not be the right way to fix it. In dapper it seems that the
tix package is not dependent on python or python-tk. In other words tix
and tix-dev could be removed while python would still retain the
wrappers for tix

The path was working before in breezy, I remember using Tix to construct
widgets with Python! But I am not sure what changed since then.

Suggestion:
Fix the library path and make tix co-dependent with/to python, in other words
it should be always installed if python (especially Tkinter) is installed.
Python documentation refers to it, so it should be there...

[Bug 34112] Re: gnome programs don't respect ~/.cups/lpoptions

2006-06-17 Thread Pascal De Vuyst
@Junglebz

I believe the patch fixes printing for libgnomeprint based applications as far
as it can be fixed, many people have confirmed it.
Perhaps you have a different issue that is only related to your printer model.
You are not being very specific, please help us first by providing more
information.
What printer model do you have? What application(s) did you try to print from?
The patch normally solves several issues, can you give examples of issues you
still have (e.g. printer quality set in gnome-cups-manager not respected).

Yes, I'm able to resume successfully in both cases. Suspend and
Hibernate appear to function properly in all respects.

However, in the case of Shutdown, the system now requires me to manually
turn off the power. With Breezy, it powered down automatically.

[Bug 50096] snd-intel-hda / Conexant id 31: Sound Problem

2006-06-17 Thread fasteddy
Public bug reported:

Hi,

i have a problem with sound on my Benq S53w: I don't have any ;)

I tried using alsamixer with every logical combination but it did not work at
all.
I just hear a cracking sound of my boxes when turning on/off
'Surround','microphone' or 'Mic boost +20db'.

I also tried to compile all alsa-stuff by myself, but it did not solve
my problem.

Sound works fine with Windows XP (Dual Boot).

I heard it should work with Linups 9.3 and also with Zeta but i have no
proof.

[Bug 50097] Wrong firmware for acx111-wlan card

2006-06-17 Thread Mikko Virkkilä
Public bug reported:

I've got a laptop with a PCMCIA wlan card. The name is Buffalo G54, but
they have released several models under this name. The model is WLI-CB-
G54L and it's based on the acx111 chipset.

With the default firmware the power light lights up, but the link light
(which should blink each time a packet is sent/received) never blinks.

The card came with a cd with the firmware. It is a single file with the
md5sum of fcd07de4b25e1d2aaf3b78b27c5b7ee9 which is the same as for the
file in acx/1.2.1.34/tiacx111c16 and with this firmware, the card works
as it should.

I put the results of lspci -vv and lspci -vvn up at:
http://aski.hut.fi/~mvirkkil/acx111/

[Bug 42834] Re: please add Z39.50 support

2006-06-17 Thread Tom Holland
On 2006-05-09 at 21:37, Lucas Nussbaum wrote:
So the question is : what's Z39.50, and why should we include
support for it in the package ?

Z39.50 is an old protocol for searching and retrieving information from
remote databases. It's important because it's the standard used by major
libraries--so while Amazon, Barnes and Noble etc use web services,
people like the British Library and Library of Congress still mainly use
Z39.50

Support for Z39.50 in Alexandria is important for anybody who wants to
retrieve accurate bibliographic data for older books, which won't show
up on the Amazon and Barnes and Noble databases. I work on late-19th and
early-20th-century literature, for example, and about half the books in
my library are pre-ISBN. I'd like to catalogue them accurately using my
British Library logon, and according to sections 8.2.3 and 8.2.5 of the
Alexandria manual (V0.0.7) I can do this.

However, the relevant options don't appear in this build.

[Bug 39862] Re: [sky2] Marvell ethernet interface doesn' t work after reboot

2006-06-17 Thread Graeme Hewson
The original problem I reported is half-resolved with kernel 2.6.15-25
(386 and 686) and sky2 driver version 1.4. After rebooting Ubuntu, the
interface works fine.

However, the interface doesn't work with a warm boot of Windows XP after
shutting down Ubuntu. Of course, it could be argued this is a problem
with Windows, but fair's fair: the problem doesn't happen in reverse,
i.e., the interface works with a wam boot of Ubuntu after shutting down
Windows.

[Bug 50062] Re: 6.06 with kernel update 2.6.15-25 loses ath0 wlan

2006-06-17 Thread Mark Favas
The cause of the linux-restricted package not being updated was due to the
security-related lines in /etc/apt/sources.list only having the main flag
rather than main restricted, i.e.
deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu dapper-security main
deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu dapper-security main
instead of
deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu dapper-security main restricted
deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu dapper-security main restricted

Once I added the restricted keywords and updated, all was well.

As this was a brand-new ab-initio install, not an upgrade, I don't know how the
issue with sources.list could have occurred.

[Bug 36958] Re: No touch-and-drag with Synaptics pad

2006-06-17 Thread wizard
The same here, although on Slackware 10.2.
The stock 2.6.13 kernel from the slackware instalation
disks was working perfectly.
The touchpad was detected as ImPS/2, and the touch-and-drag.
was working ok.
A new compile of 2.6.16.20 broke the things.
The new kernel detected the touchpad as SynPS/2 and
the touch-and-drag was not functional.
After compiling the ps2 mouse support as module
(CONFIG_MOUSE_PS2=m) everything was ok.
I do not know why the thing was not working when
compiled into the kernel.

[Bug 45500] Re: When trying to set up a printer in http://localhost:631/ an error occurs

2006-06-17 Thread P229
Does this problem exist in an installed copy of Ubuntu 6.06, or just on
the live CD?

No point installing Ubuntu 6.06 if a printer can't be added... I'm not
sure why this is listed as Medium and not Severe. Not being able to
set up any printer at all is a fatal flaw, especially for a distribution
designed/released for long term support. Is Ubuntu 6.06 still in beta
or what? Is there a fix or workaround for this bug yet? An operating
system that can't print for extended periods (i.e., since its release)

As is the default now, your console is UTF-8, but language-env does not
detect this and tries to use a non utf8 mode messing everything up.

[Bug 50101] Upgrade to Dapper fails because ia32-libs fails to install

2006-06-17 Thread Rkimber
Public bug reported:

When upgrading 5.10 to the new release via the update manager, the
upgrade fails at the point where it is trying to install
ia32-libs_1.4ubuntu19_amd64.deb on my dual opteron.

The messages were:-

could not install
/var/cache/apt/archives/ia32-libs_1.4ubuntu19_amd64.deb
upgrade aborts now
subprocess pre-installation script return error exit status 2

at the end of the attempted upgrade I got:-

could not install upgrades
The upgrade aborts now
Your system can be in an unusable state
A recovery was run (dpkg --configure -a)

and in the window was a message:-
installArchive() failed.

I then tried in synaptic to fix broken, this gave six identical error
messages:-

Failed to load image gnome-mixer.png

then

not all changes and updates succeeded
For further details of the failure please expand the terminal below ( - but I
was already in a terminal)

I then tried apt-get install -f and this complained about ia32lib again
and gave error code (1)

As a result of this the system is not usable, although it is possible to
perform some tasks.

[Bug 49893] Re: Name of Configure Printers wrong

2006-06-17 Thread Jan Claeys
Changes through alacarte override the defaults, even after they are
corrected, and I'm not sure if alacarte has an easy way to remove them.

Also, this should be fixed since June, 14th, as I fixed this bug in
Rosetta 1 or 2 days after the Ubuntu 6.06 release, and there was a
language pack update on the 14th. Otherwise something went wrong with
the langpack updates or with Rosetta. Please also remember that you
might have to restart gnome to see those updates.

[Bug 50103] kwrite does not provides a DCOP interface to open documents (as kate does)

2006-06-17 Thread Mildred
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase

When I want to open multiple documents with kwrite, I can :
- click on file-open and choose the file
- drag and drop the file I want to edit into a kwrite window
But there is no way to do it using the console without starting another
instance of kwrite (which take a longer time on my computer)

kate does provide a DCOP interface to open documents, then I can write a
shell script that does what I want, but I prefer to use kwrite.

So, is it possible to have a such interface ?

[Bug 44830] Re: wrong interpretation of dualscreen setup

2006-06-17 Thread Lisje
I think the problem resides in the i810 driver. It isn't just the wacom/gimp
problem on its own, I've been experiencing more problems than just my problem
with gimp when I use the dualscreen setup-configuration.
It seems i'm unable to view dvd's with totem (just dvd's) when the dualscreen
is activated .. while it does work when I'm not using that dualscreen setup.
(I use another config-file when I don't need the dualscreen setup, since ubuntu
is unable to detect whether the screen is attached to my laptop or not.)
The problem doesn't seem to go away when I disable xinerama (and just use the
dualscreen functions of the i810 driver). Which makes me more confident that
the problem is situated in the i810 driver.

[Bug 50106] Please sync intltool-debian (main) from unstable

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

Please sync intltool-debian (main) from unstable.

Overriding Ubuntu changes is ok.

Changelog since current dapper version 0.34.1+20050828ubuntu1:

intltool-debian (0.34.2+20060512) unstable; urgency=low

  * Sync CVS: intltool 2006/05/12.

  * intltool-extract: Use C++ comments '//' instead of C comments '/*...*/'
to allow '*/' in comments. Closes: #366450 Thanks Christian Perrier

  * debian/control: Bump Standards-Version: 3.7.2, no changes are
needed.

  * debian/control: As told by lintian, replace Build-Depends-Indep: debhelper
by Build-Depends: debhelper because debhelper programs are run by the
clean target.

 -- Denis Barbier [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sat, 13 May 2006 01:49:05 +0200

intltool-debian (0.34.2+20060415) unstable; urgency=low

  * intltool-update: This program called /usr/bin/file to determine file
encoding. It is useless in intltool-debian, so this call is dropped
indtead of adding an unnecessary dependency. Closes: #362814
Thanks Marc Haber

 -- Denis Barbier [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sat, 15 Apr 2006 22:56:35 +0200

intltool-debian (0.34.2+20060322) unstable; urgency=low

  * intltool-merge: Under some special circumstances, an English field
composed of several paragraphs may contain an empty string. Of course
this empty string has no translation, and thus the whole paragraph is
untranslated. A better approach is to assume that an empty string
has an empty translation. Closes: #357948 Thanks Colin Watson
  * Update to intltool 0.34.2; there is no change in handling of
RFC822 files.

 -- Denis Barbier [EMAIL PROTECTED] Tue, 28 Mar 2006 23:38:30 +0200

intltool-debian (0.34.1+20060220) unstable; urgency=low

  * intltool-merge: Do not reformat translated templates. This will produce
very long lines, but this is already the case with locale or keyboard
choosers, so there should be no problem with (c)debconf.

  * intltool-merge: Comments are now properly discarded.

  * Comments in the form '#flag:' are interpreted by intltool-extract and
intltool-merge. They are helpful when a translatable field is composed
of several strings. Recognized keywords are:
  - #flag:translate: Write only the specified strings into PO files.
  - #flag:comment: Comments can be defined for each individual string.
  - #flag:partial: This flag prints translated strings even if they are
not fully translated.
  * See full documentation in po-debconf(7).
  * Slightly modify intltool-merge and intltool-extract so that inner routines
are more similar and thus less error prone.

  * Add intltool authors into debian/copyright.
