[Bug 48499] Re: hald blocks ide bus if cdrom on same bus with harddisk(was:Extremly slow IO performance with dapper, high wa% on Dell Inspiron 8200)
This update adds information I have previously reported in a thread on ubuntuforums.org: hald on edgy still behaves badly on an Inspiron 8200 here. I've found that it does *not* work to stop hald from polling the CD-drive and stop blocking the IDE-channel by adding filters in /etc/hal. It does however work if I add the rule in /usr/share/hal/fdi/preprobe/10osvendor/10-ide- drives.fdi. I haven't yet examined the source for hald to figure out why blacklisting the device through config-files in /etc doesn't have the same effect as changing the vendor-file in /usr/share/hal. The problem was introduced through a CVS update in october 2005. A copy of the diff is attached. Reversing this diff and then restart hald solves the problem. The system will not detect changes to the CD-drive with the blacklist entry in place, but having to mount manually is much preferred over crippled IDE performance. ** Attachment added: HAL blacklist-entry removal diff http://librarian.launchpad.net/5907427/hal-fix-remove_blacklisted_HL-DT-STCD-RW.txt -- hald blocks ide bus if cdrom on same bus with harddisk(was:Extremly slow IO performance with dapper, high wa% on Dell Inspiron 8200) https://launchpad.net/bugs/48499 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 78985] Re: Make totem-xine the default for totem
gstreamer's deficiencies in comparison to xine are not limited to dvd playback: 1. playing streaming media doesn't work as well as xine (especially wmv streaming media) - in many cases - not at all - this is a huge issue. 2. playback of corrupted/partial files is very cpu intensive. 3. subtitles support is partial (more of a totem issue). someday, gstreamer will be as good as xine, mplayer, or vlc; for the time being, please provide the end-user the best possible solution available today, and when gstreamer will be mature enough, than consider adding it back to ubuntu stack - gstreamer have been in ubuntu for several releases now, and haven't improved yet. note: mplayer seems to have the best success ratio at playing streaming media, rather than gstreamer or xine. -- Make totem-xine the default for totem https://launchpad.net/bugs/78985 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

You know, I really don't think that this font is all that great. The hinting is really, really off. Or even non-existent. this bug was never fixed in edgy, and now it's present again in feisty ever since herd 2 was released, it was fixed for a short time and now it's back after the latest kernel updates. will this bug ever be fixed in the final release of feisty yes or no, because i don't want to waste the time waiting for the next release just to have the same problem. -- [edgy] Restart takes much too long https://launchpad.net/bugs/66589 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I think it's good default to allow normal users to shut down. They probably don't change that. For you it's a problem because I think you have some good reason disallow shutdown for normal users. http://ubuntu.wordpress.com/2006/03/20/disable-shutdown-for-normal-users/ gives an example how it could be done. I have not tested it. It is here just to give some ideas. Why is the status Needs Info? If you tell why you don't want normal user doing shutdown it becomes easier to help. Reconnecting to the docking station enables the external display which is connected to it. Turning on the laptop display on resume does work when suspending succeeds, though, it only fails when suspending itself fails. Thanks for reporting, but, you are filing against listen 0.5-beta1-7. Given that this is not an official Ubuntu package, this bug will be rejected. [Bug 80205] Re: Ubuntu Herd 2 - i386 Desktop CD - Installation Error
I would suggest looking at the changes between today's 20070127 and yesterday's builds. This bug was fixed for all this week's daily builds and reappeared just today. As I have commented in Launchpad some days ago, the disk is partitioned correctly but feisty cannot format the partitions. The pc freezes at 100% cpu I am testing feisty in vmware, but I expect the same behaviour in all x86 and amd64 desktop builds of today (kubuntu, xubuntu, dvd) etc. The alternate might be ok (but only when installing on new hard disk, the partitioner still can't handle existing partitions). -- Ubuntu Herd 2 - i386 Desktop CD - Installation Error https://launchpad.net/bugs/80205 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 61407] Re: Dell Inspiron 510m - tasks not stopping on Hibernate
I'm occasionally experiencing this problem with my ThinkPad X60s: Trying to suspend fails with the message stopping tasks timed out after 20 seconds, then it tries to resume, but the display isn't turned on. I know there's a seperate bug reported about the display not being turned on when resuming, related to s3_bios support, but when suspending succeeds, resuming will work properly as well. Only when it fails to suspend will the display stay turned off. So I believe that fixing suspend will automatically fix resume, at least on my laptop. • Fixed lintian warnings. • Fixed libdeskbar-tracker Architecture: all (d'oh). • Mention the deskbar plugin in debian/copyright. The copyright info in the plugin is somewhat vague. This bug has been declared as fixed, however I did not manage to see any improvement when testing all this week's (up to Jan 26) builds of amd64 desktop, which has built-in gnome-app-install version 0.3.6 Might be a particularity of amd64 and/or my testing in vmware. -- Add/Remove programs crashed on Feisty https://launchpad.net/bugs/79619 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 74733] Re: Feisty install under VMware doesn't detect hard disk
I am testing all daily builds of feisty amd64 desktop in VMware (host is 64bit windows), and I never had this bug, installation always proceeded ok. However, In this weeks builds, feisty added debug messages during boot. For the last 3-4 daily builds, there appear several messages regarding harddisk/cdrom access (and a lot of unnecessary cdrom accesses activity) before the splash screen. After about two screens of errors the system boots normally. My guess is that x32 and x64 hosts' scsi implementations are different (both real and virtual). On the other hand, my estimate is that if you try the latest daily builds, you will be able to boot normally (just don't use 20070127, it has other problems). -- Feisty install under VMware doesn't detect hard disk https://launchpad.net/bugs/74733 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
