then libgnoffice-0-dev should depend on either if the two libs. IIRC
there is no need for a separate libgoffice-gtk-dev since it contains
header files, docs and the .so symlink which are independent of whether
it's built with gnome deps or not.

Sweet. I'll look at it and see what I can do. Still, anything
requiring a web browser is a usability problem for server
environments. But I suppose it can be scripted with a web client. A
web services version of the web site side of things would be very
helpful.

[Bug 48499] Re: hald blocks ide bus if cdrom on same bus with harddisk(was:Extremly slow IO performance with dapper, high wa% on Dell Inspiron 8200)

2007-01-27 Thread Per Heldal
This update adds information I have previously reported in a thread on
ubuntuforums.org:

hald on edgy still behaves badly on an Inspiron 8200 here. I've found
that it does *not* work to stop hald from polling the CD-drive and stop
blocking the IDE-channel by adding filters in /etc/hal. It does however
work if I add the rule in /usr/share/hal/fdi/preprobe/10osvendor/10-ide-
drives.fdi. I haven't yet examined the source for hald to figure out why
blacklisting the device through config-files in /etc doesn't have the
same effect as changing the vendor-file in /usr/share/hal.

The problem was introduced through a CVS update in october 2005. A copy
of the diff is attached. Reversing this diff and then restart hald
solves the problem. The system will not detect changes to the CD-drive
with the blacklist entry in place, but having to mount manually is much
preferred over crippled IDE performance.

DISCUSSION:

It seems that there is either something with the update-manager or dbus.
There is a mention of a missing dbus .service file for
org.freedesktop.UpdateManager could that be the problem?

[Bug 78985] Re: Make totem-xine the default for totem

2007-01-27 Thread mangar
gstreamer's deficiencies in comparison to xine are not limited to dvd
playback:

1. playing streaming media doesn't work as well as xine
(especially wmv streaming media) - in many cases - not at
all - this is a huge issue.

2. playback of corrupted/partial files is very cpu intensive.
3. subtitles support is partial (more of a totem issue).

someday, gstreamer will be as good as xine, mplayer, or vlc;
for the time being, please provide the end-user the best possible solution
available today, and when gstreamer will be mature enough, than consider adding
it back to ubuntu stack - gstreamer have been in ubuntu for several releases
now, and haven't improved yet.

note:
mplayer seems to have the best success ratio at playing streaming media, rather
than gstreamer or xine.

[Bug 81608] Re: Please use DejaVu Sans Condensed as the default font

2007-01-27 Thread Michiel Sikma
You know, I really don't think that this font is all that great. The
hinting is really, really off. Or even non-existent. And, as I
suspected, the font does not have the optimal screen font structure.
Condensed fonts are more difficult to read, most of the time, and that
is why I was skeptical from the beginning. I don't think that cramming
more information in a less readable font is going to do much good.

[Bug 81792] Re: rhythmbox crashes when editing artist tag

2007-01-27 Thread Heine Pedersen
I also encountered this error.

I started by right-clicking the song, i wanted to edit, chose
preferences.

Then i cut and pasted some text in songname, and used the back and
forward buttons, then the error occurred.

Rhythmbox continued to play music just fine, and I continued to edit the
track entries one by one, then I wanted to set the genre on all tracks
for an album, and i selected them all and right clicked and chose
properties, then it reported a crash once for each selected entry.

The crash said Error while saving Song information - internal Gstreamer
problem.

I get this last bug consistently when editing this album, I can edit
other albums. The album consists of tracks in mp3 format.

this bug was never fixed in edgy, and now it's present again in feisty
ever since herd 2 was released, it was fixed for a short time and now
it's back after the latest kernel updates. will this bug ever be fixed
in the final release of feisty yes or no, because i don't want to waste
the time waiting for the next release just to have the same problem.

None of the Linux distros have worked, over the past two nights I have tried

all. I now know why Microsoft is the better OS, it is clear why Windows OS
is far superior and I'd rather pay for windows and it work than get linux

[Bug 81700] Re: Any user can shut down

2007-01-27 Thread Jouni Mettala
I think it's good default to allow normal users to shut down. They
probably don't change that. For you it's a problem because I think you
have some good reason disallow shutdown for normal users.

http://ubuntu.wordpress.com/2006/03/20/disable-shutdown-for-normal-users/
gives an example how it could be done. I have not tested it. It is here just to
give some ideas.

Why is the status Needs Info?
If you tell why you don't want normal user doing shutdown it becomes easier to
help. Are you thinking something like
https://wiki.kubuntu.org/KubuntuKioskProfiles
for Gnome. I should have asked this earlier.

[Bug 80519] Re: feisty herd 2 installer hangs after closing qtparted

2007-01-27 Thread UBfusion
Today' iso build 20070127 of the amd64 desktop iso has the same old
herd2 bug during installation - it can create partitions but cannot
format them. The machine freezes totally with 100% cpu.

This bug was fixed and reappeared just today - all this week's builds
were OK.

I am testing feisty in vmware, but I expect the same behaviour in x86
and amd64 kubuntu, xubuntu, dvd etc. The alternate might be ok (but only
when installing on new hard disk, the partitioner still can't handle
existing partitions).

[Bug 70602] Re: Dual-core Thinkpad fails to suspend with cpu governor active

2007-01-27 Thread Stefan Daniel Schwarz
After further investigation, I believe my problem is related to Bug
#61407 - I always got the message stopping tasks timed out after 20
seconds, then the ThinkPad tries to resume, but the laptop display
stays off. Reconnecting to the docking station enables the external
display which is connected to it. Turning on the laptop display on
resume does work when suspending succeeds, though, it only fails when
suspending itself fails.

Should this bug perhaps be marked as a duplicate of Bug #61407 - or is
the cpufreq problem really a seperate issue?

[Bug 80205] Re: Ubuntu Herd 2 - i386 Desktop CD - Installation Error

2007-01-27 Thread UBfusion
I would suggest looking at the changes between today's 20070127 and

[Bug 61407] Re: Dell Inspiron 510m - tasks not stopping on Hibernate

2007-01-27 Thread Stefan Daniel Schwarz
I'm occasionally experiencing this problem with my ThinkPad X60s: Trying
to suspend fails with the message stopping tasks timed out after 20
seconds, then it tries to resume, but the display isn't turned on.

I know there's a seperate bug reported about the display not being
turned on when resuming, related to s3_bios support, but when suspending
succeeds, resuming will work properly as well. Only when it fails to
suspend will the display stay turned off.

So I believe that fixing suspend will automatically fix resume, at least
on my laptop.

(I also reported this to Bug #70602 - not sure if/how it might be
related to this issue!)

[Bug 74733] Re: Feisty install under VMware doesn't detect hard disk

2007-01-27 Thread UBfusion
I am testing all daily builds of feisty amd64 desktop in VMware (host is
64bit windows), and I never had this bug, installation always proceeded
ok.

However, In this weeks builds, feisty added debug messages during boot.
For the last 3-4 daily builds, there appear several messages regarding
harddisk/cdrom access (and a lot of unnecessary cdrom accesses activity)
before the splash screen. After about two screens of errors the system
boots normally.

My guess is that x32 and x64 hosts' scsi implementations are different
(both real and virtual). On the other hand, my estimate is that if you
try the latest daily builds, you will be able to boot normally (just
don't use 20070127, it has other problems).
