[Bug 96857] Feisty Beta: debian-installer does not mount cdrom
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: debian-installer Problem occurs when installing Feisty Beta (either Ubuntu or Kubuntu) from i386 alternate iso in a Parallels or Qemu VM on two different computers. The installer starts as per usual (with boot options install acpi=off fb=false hw-detect/start_pcmcia=false), asking questions about language, then starts detecting hardware and fails when it can't find a driver for the cd-rom drive (even though the procedure runs off the CD up to this point). None of the offered choices works, nor does varying the device name (/dev/cdrom, /dev/hdb, etc). This stops the installation cold. The virtual cd-rom in these VMs is an ide device, so the ide_cd/cdrom drivers should work. For reference, the Debian Etch (KDE) RC-2 and Knoppix 5.1 CDs don't have this problem and install easily in either VM. Furthermore, earlier Kubuntu Feisty Herd-3 and 5 versions (also alternate i386 iso) did install properly in a Parallels VM, and the Herd-5 versions has been kept up-to-date without problem. It appears that some change was made in Feisty Beta that causes the above problem. ** Affects: debian-installer (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Feisty Beta: debian-installer does not mount cdrom https://launchpad.net/bugs/96857 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share
100% reproducible in India, I recently wanted to purchase a laptop, but without a MS OS, 99% of the laptops available had one, and only very low end ones were available with Linux. So I contacted Dell, Lenovo and HP and told them that if I purchase a laptop from them, what are the procedures that I should follow for a refund of the cost of the MS OS if I don't wish to use it. (The EULA clearly states that my vendor is legally obliged to refund the amount to me, if i do not wish to use the bundled OS). The only reply I got was Sorry, sir, but we are not offering this service. When I told them that they are legally bound to do it, they told me they are not aware of it. Dell was audacious enough to tell me that they are not running any such promotion, and I was like what the hell damn it, i am not asking for a discount or something it is my legal right. Maybe I will settle with something like N100 (a35), one of the very few laptops with dual core processors and without a bundled MS OS. -- Microsoft has a majority market share https://launchpad.net/bugs/1 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 93243] Re: edgy shutdown unexpected
temporary fix: after some online reading, I tried the solution described here: http://www.vmware.com/community/message.jspa?messageID=332390 In my case, the BIOS of my machine controls the fan, and upon boot up, when ACPI kicks in, the fan shuts off. I edited /boot/grub/menu.lst and found the line for my kernel and added acpi=off noacpi to the end of that. so mine looks like: title Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.17-11-386 root(hd0,1) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.17-11-386 root=UUID=0a5a4656-cf6d-4dc0-acd9-25908ebd2177 ro splash acpi=off noacpi initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.17-11-386 savedefault boot (end grub menu) it goes without saying this isn't the definitive cure for this problem, but my fan is running. ** Attachment added: output of dmesg after fix http://librarian.launchpad.net/6991602/dmesg.log -- edgy shutdown unexpected https://launchpad.net/bugs/93243 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Sorry - but i have gone back to Debian ;-) The installation has been overwritten. You must search the error in reading and analyzing of the partition table. [Bug 84717] Re: SRU: updates necessary for Kubuntu Upgrade Tool in Edgy
Hi, if you connect to the internet via proxy server and in root's konqueror profile no proxy is configured (which I hues it usually is as everyone should use sudo), the upgrade file cannot be downloaded. Adept shows no error message. You can see the error only if you start adept from a konsole session. After giving root's profile the proxy settings, the upgrade runs fine, except that if you select Show Terminal, the installation hung waiting for input when configuring a package. After pressing Enter (to respond to the message More), installation continued. Don't know what happens if you do not let the terminal be shown. -- SRU: updates necessary for Kubuntu Upgrade Tool in Edgy https://launchpad.net/bugs/84717 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 96873] NVidia mx440 - Problem with latest 2.6.20-13 kernel
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nvidia-glx First of all I think that the problem is located in more than one package but I can`t choose more than one from the form above. The Packages are: nvidia-glx nvidia-glx-legacy (Check second option on starting the X on the description to understand why I think this package has a problem) linux-restricted-modules-generic Problems for me on a PC that I am testing feisty. This PC has a NVidia MX440 Graphics card and till 2.6.20-12 and NVidia driver 9631 everything was working flawlessly. After the last update I can`t start X using nvidia-glx and as I can read from the logs this card (MX440) is not supported from 9755 nvidia driver. There are two ways for me to start the X now. The first one (And one I am using now) is to use nv instead of nvidia as the driver in lack of 3d acceleration. The second one is to install the nvidia-glx-legacy that installs the nvidia 7184 driver but this option has a major problem It is starting the X using the nvidia 3d accelerated driver but I cannot use a resolution above 800x600 and a refresh rate of 60Hz so it is totally useless because I can`t see anything with that refresh rate and resolution. It would be great if the Update Manager could make it easier to detect inserted live-cds or alternate install CDs. [Bug 50448] Re: Network doesn't always come up on boot
This is still an issue. I run dapper on all desktops here, and never had this problem, until now. Purchased 2 dell optiplex machines to use as test machines to replace some old desktops, and when it boots there is no network up whatsoever. The /etc/init.d/networking script hangs for quite a while (no significant output whatsoever), then exits due to a timeout. After logging in, the file /var/run/network/ifstate contains the following: lo=lo eth0=eth0 thus running ifup -a doesn't work, running ifup -a --force does bring up the network interface. /etc/init.d/networking restart works as well, however the above two methods only work if done from the console, not from the init scripts. The network card is a broadcom (exact type unknown atm) using the tg3 driver. The machine is running the 2.6.20-12-generic x64 kernel from feisty, because of the fact that the card didn't work on the stock dapper kernel. Hoping there is a workaround for this, because we were planning on waiting with upgrading our desktops until feisty is stable. -- Network doesn't always come up on boot https://launchpad.net/bugs/50448 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
