[Bug 96851] /etc/init.d/rc has crtical typo.

2007-03-27 Thread EvanCarroll
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: base-files

apparently Ubuntu uses upstart, however /etc/init.d/rc has an option to enable
concurrency
CONCURRENCY=startpar as mentioned in the comment.

=startpar is *only* valid with sysvinit, and will result in a loop of
errors on boot, and a brick of the system, (because even in non-
multiuser run levels root is -l, which is a dumb idea you would think
there would be a way to unlock root when not in run level 3-5)

[Bug 96857] Feisty Beta: debian-installer does not mount cdrom

2007-03-27 Thread Henk Koster
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: debian-installer

Problem occurs when installing Feisty Beta (either Ubuntu or Kubuntu)
from i386 alternate iso in a Parallels or Qemu VM on two different
computers. The installer starts as per usual (with boot options install
acpi=off fb=false hw-detect/start_pcmcia=false), asking questions about
language, then starts detecting hardware and fails when it can't find a
driver for the cd-rom drive (even though the procedure runs off the CD
up to this point). None of the offered choices works, nor does varying
the device name (/dev/cdrom, /dev/hdb, etc). This stops the installation
cold.

The virtual cd-rom in these VMs is an ide device, so the ide_cd/cdrom drivers
should work.
For reference, the Debian Etch (KDE) RC-2 and Knoppix 5.1 CDs don't have this
problem and install easily in either VM. Furthermore, earlier Kubuntu Feisty
Herd-3 and 5 versions (also alternate i386 iso) did install properly in a
Parallels VM, and the Herd-5 versions has been kept up-to-date without problem.

It appears that some change was made in Feisty Beta that causes the
above problem.

[Bug 96861] Wireless connection not activated after boot/login

Public bug reported:

I am using Feisty Fawn (updated to the latest packages) on an IBM/Lenovo

Until about two weeks ago I had no problems with the wireless with

After boot/login I now have no network connection. Running ifconfig and
iwconfig manually using the same settings configured in

[Bug 96860] legacy driver update to at least 1.0.9631

Hello,

After I upgraded to the latest kernel 2.6.20-13-generic, I found
out that my video was not working anymore. When I was trying to start
the xserver ther was an error message which was no devices found. I
took a llok at xorg.0.log file and I found out that my video car which
is an nvidia MX4000 card was not supported by the new drive. The last
driver which is supposed to support my card is from the 1.0.96xx series.
The nvidia driver version which is linked to the 2.6.20-13-generic
kernel is version 1.0.9755. sO I would like to know if you are going to
update the nvidia-glx-legacy package with a newer version at least
1.0.9631 nvidia driver version ?

[Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share

2007-03-27 Thread subiet
100% reproducible in India, I recently wanted to purchase a laptop, but
without a MS OS, 99% of the laptops available had one, and only very low
end ones were available with Linux. So I contacted Dell, Lenovo and HP
and told them that if I purchase a laptop from them, what are the
procedures that I should follow for a refund of the cost of the MS OS if
I don't wish to use it. (The EULA clearly states that my vendor is
legally obliged to refund the amount to me, if i do not wish to use the
bundled OS). The only reply I got was Sorry, sir, but we are not
offering this service. When I told them that they are legally bound to
do it, they told me they are not aware of it. Dell was audacious enough
to tell me that they are not running any such promotion, and I was like
what the hell damn it, i am not asking for a discount or something it is
my legal right. Maybe I will settle with something like N100 (a35), one
of the very few laptops with dual core processors and without a bundled
MS OS.

that the kernel from Dapper/Edgy is stopping after finding the PS/2 Keyboard
Controller?

[Bug 96863] Re: [apport] senddigests crashed with IOError in __write()

2007-03-27 Thread Thomas Bleher
A little further digging revealed: I had deactivated mailman by
# cd /etc/rc2.d; mv S20mailman K20mailman
(which I believe is the proper procedure). This may have been causing this bug.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 70991 ***

Thanks for your detailed reply. Bug 65791 was fixed by Luka Renko since January
7th, 2007 so you shouldn't have problem at this time. Probably your bug is a
duplicate of 70991 that is still open.
I'll mark as duplicate of it.

Thanks.

2007-03-27 Thread Thomas Bleher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mailman

To be honest: I didn't notice this flaw until apport signalled it; I
once installed mailman, but completely forgot about it. I updated to

[Bug 96865] don't format existing swap partition

2007-03-27 Thread Michael Kofler
Public bug reported:

on my computer there is more than one Linux distribution; all used to
access the same swap partition (say /dev/sda3)

now more and more distributions address partitions by uuid

BUT: formating the swap partition changes the uuid!

example:

 - distribution 1 uses swap partition with uuid=1234
 - now I install ubuntu, which reformats the swap partition; not it has
uuid=5678;
 - all works fine for the new ubuntu installation, but my previous distrib. 1
cannot anymore access the swap partition!

for this reason: don't touch existing swap partitions, if they are
already formated

[Bug 96777] Re: Undefined kernel key code when booting Feisty beta on T2000

2007-03-27 Thread Fabio Massimo Di Nitto
2 bugs here... please Marc report ONE problem for ONE bug...

the Undefined kernel key code is harmless and they are triggered by
/usr/bin/ckbcomp in package console-setup (please file a separate bug
but it's not a blocker)

The missing console is: init:/etc/event.d/ttyS0:13: Unknown stanza
it seems a recent change in upstart didn't update ttyS0 properly.

[Bug 93243] Re: edgy shutdown unexpected

2007-03-27 Thread geoffrey
temporary fix:
after some online reading, I tried the solution described here:

http://www.vmware.com/community/message.jspa?messageID=332390

In my case, the BIOS of my machine controls the fan, and upon boot up,
when ACPI kicks in, the fan shuts off.

I edited /boot/grub/menu.lst and found the line for my kernel
and added

acpi=off noacpi

to the end of that.

so mine looks like:

title Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.17-11-386
root(hd0,1)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.17-11-386
root=UUID=0a5a4656-cf6d-4dc0-acd9-25908ebd2177 ro splash acpi=off noacpi
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.17-11-386
savedefault
boot

(end grub menu)
it goes without saying this isn't the definitive cure for this problem, but my
fan is running.

[Bug 91411] Re: KDE manual partition failed

2007-03-27 Thread Karsten
Sorry - but i have gone back to Debian ;-)
The installation has been overwritten.

You must search the error in reading and analyzing of the partition table.
My Bootmanager is publishing only the activated partitions as partitionized.
The other partitions looks like not partitionized.
I think that is the problem in the software.

There was a non partitionized block first and then the root partition followed
by a swap partition.
Then again some not partitionized block.

This are the test conditions.

[Bug 84717] Re: SRU: updates necessary for Kubuntu Upgrade Tool in Edgy

2007-03-27 Thread Peter Kelder
Tried to upgrade from 6.10.
Machine: HP Notebook 6220.
I had a clean install of 6.10 on usb disk (/dev/sda)
installation:
- root partition: /dev/sda1
- home partition /dev/sda2
- swap partition /dev/sda3
- grub installed on /dev/sda
To be sure I had removed the internal disk, so these are the only partitions on
the system.

At almost the end of the install actions the disk hung. This looked a
lot like the known error with previous installs (6.10) when the usb disk
was not dismounted before the install.

[Bug 84717] Re: SRU: updates necessary for Kubuntu Upgrade Tool in Edgy

2007-03-27 Thread thomas michel
Hi,

if you connect to the internet via proxy server and in root's konqueror profile
no proxy is configured (which I hues it usually is as everyone should use
sudo), the upgrade file cannot be downloaded. Adept shows no error message.
You can see the error only if you start adept from a konsole session.

After giving root's profile the proxy settings, the upgrade runs fine,
except that if you select Show Terminal, the installation hung waiting
for input when configuring a package. After pressing Enter (to respond
to the message More), installation continued. Don't know what happens
if you do not let the terminal be shown.

[Bug 96873] NVidia mx440 - Problem with latest 2.6.20-13 kernel

2007-03-27 Thread Vangelis Tasoulas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nvidia-glx

First of all I think that the problem is located in more than one package but I
can`t choose more than one from the form above.
The Packages are:
nvidia-glx
nvidia-glx-legacy (Check second option on starting the X on the description to
understand why I think this package has a problem)
linux-restricted-modules-generic

Problems for me on a PC that I am testing feisty.

This PC has a NVidia MX440 Graphics card and till 2.6.20-12 and NVidia
driver 9631 everything was working flawlessly. After the last update I
can`t start X using nvidia-glx and as I can read from the logs this card
(MX440) is not supported from 9755 nvidia driver.

There are two ways for me to start the X now.
The first one (And one I am using now) is to use nv instead of nvidia as
the driver in lack of 3d acceleration.
The second one is to install the nvidia-glx-legacy that installs the nvidia
7184 driver but this option has a major problem
It is starting the X using the nvidia 3d accelerated driver but I cannot use a
resolution above 800x600 and a refresh rate of 60Hz so it is totally useless
because I can`t see anything with that refresh rate and resolution.

[Bug 96849] Re: Update Tool Crashed

2007-03-27 Thread Iain Cheyne
It would be great if the Update Manager could make it easier to detect
inserted live-cds or alternate install CDs. I ran apt-cdrom, so I am not
sure if the updater does that, but it would be a useful touch. I
couldn't find any information about how to do an update with the CD
otherwise.

I will test the CD tonight to see if it's valid or if the md5 failures
were a serious problem.

[Bug 50448] Re: Network doesn't always come up on boot

2007-03-27 Thread Sjors Robroek
This is still an issue. I run dapper on all desktops here, and never had
this problem, until now.

Purchased 2 dell optiplex machines to use as test machines to replace
some old desktops, and when it boots there is no network up whatsoever.
The /etc/init.d/networking script hangs for quite a while (no
significant output whatsoever), then exits due to a timeout.

After logging in, the file /var/run/network/ifstate contains the
following:

lo=lo
eth0=eth0

thus running ifup -a doesn't work, running ifup -a --force does bring up
the network interface. /etc/init.d/networking restart works as well,
however the above two methods only work if done from the console, not
from the init scripts.

The network card is a broadcom (exact type unknown atm) using the tg3
driver. The machine is running the 2.6.20-12-generic x64 kernel from
feisty, because of the fact that the card didn't work on the stock
dapper kernel.

Hoping there is a workaround for this, because we were planning on
waiting with upgrading our desktops until feisty is stable.
