[Bug 76989] Re: MP-BIOS bug on Asus Pundit1 AH2 (Kernel panic)

2007-04-25 Thread jonathanku
I'm also having the problem with Edgy
Hardware: ASUS M2N4-SLI // AMD64 X2 4600 // 2GB DDR2 667.

If I interupt the boot process with [Esc], the other options (safe mode??) do
appear to let me into my Edgy installation.
I'm relatively new to Linux (this is my second Ubuntu install) - can someone
clarify what the resolution process would normally be for this type of issue?

[Bug 107372] Re: window turns black after minimize and maximize

2007-04-25 Thread flowingfire
I also have the window blacking out problem with beryl installed. Could
it be a problem with Nvidia cards? I have a GeForce 6150. Also, I'm
operating in KDE and not Gnome. My blackouts often happen when
opening something new, minimizing and maximizing, and having several
things open at once. All programs are fair game, though Firefox seems
to be the favorite application to suffer.

I discovered that shrinking the window size sometimes fixes the problem
too... but that's only sometimes.

I would think I don't have enough RAM installed, but I have 2 GIGS!!!
Shouldn't that be enough? I think I have sufficient video memory, too,
but I suppose the GeForce 6150 is kinda skimpy in that area... dunno

Re: [Bug 53923] Re: tifm: Texas Instruments Card reader not working

2007-04-25 Thread maco
Those errors were from rmmod modprobing the modules. It seems not all
computer run the same ones to get it going though. Mine didn't have
sdhci running, but tifm_sd was. Yours had sdhci and not tifm_sd by
those errors. Too bad there's no rmmod *sd* and modprobe *sd*
options, cuz ya know, that'd make things easy, and you can't have that

[Bug 109550] Re: Black/unrendered windows in Beryl

2007-04-25 Thread flowingfire
I just wanted to thank you for being so articulate about the problem,
where others have been skimpier on the details. I too have this problem
and hope to see it's root-cause fixed. I love operating in beryl and
can't stand that black boxes hamper life at times.

These black boxes are about as welcome as the blue screen of death was
in Windows 98. :)

I'm operating Beryl in a KDE environment, so I don't know if your fix
will work, but I intend to try it out right now! I'm actually quite
excited to read it, because I'm getting sick of my AbiWord documents and
Firefox windows turning black. Ugh!

Peace.

[Bug 89750] Re: Doesn't detect CPU frequency

2007-04-25 Thread NabLa
I have done what Benno (thanks Benno :)) suggested and it oubviously
workarounded the problem (adding 20hal restart on rc.local).

Just for the record, I've found that acppi-support is run almost at the
end of the boot process (S99acpi-support), whereas dbus is loaded at the
beginning (S12dbus), might this be related? acpid is loaded pretty much
at the beginning (S10acpid). Can it be that the system doesn't have
speedstep capabilities until acpi-support is loaded, so hal can't find
out about it when it loads?

[Bug 72813] Re: Installer crashed on low disk space.

2007-04-25 Thread Roedy Green
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 48355 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/48355

I am new to Ubuntu. I have tried to install Ubuntu half a dozen times.
Each time the installer crashes with a cryptic message which when
decoded by looking at each partition means it ran out of disk space on
some partition. It does not tell me how much it wants. I fiddle the
partition sizes with Boot-It NG and try again and the same thing happens
over and over. I had the impression Linux was tiny enough to fit on a
floppy or CD. I guess I was way off base.

PLEASE, before the install starts copying files, check the free space in
the partitions and complain saying how much more space is needed in each
partition so you can get it right the next go. i.e. complain about ALL
tight partitions at once. If this would upset the purists, just make it
a warning message. Also factor in a reasonable growth. The process of
tinkering and reinstalling in SOOO tedious.

I would also like the installer to optionally avoid the Grub boot
manager. It seems Ubuntu installs it whether you like it or not. I had
some very bad experiences with it earlier.

I forgot to add that if I sudo, then it works fine. Presumably because
arguments to sudo are handled differently, not because this is a
permissions issue.

[Bug 109927] /etc/bash_completion reports script as being in the wrong location

2007-04-25 Thread Robert
Public bug reported:

My description verbatim from a post to the EdLUG e-mail list:

Second, and possibly related weirdness, is that I've got a shell script with
read and execute perms in /usr/local/bin. My PATH contains /usr/local/bin,
and I can get the name of the script using command-completion.

But when I execute it, I get the following from bash:

bash: /usr/bin/proofgeneral: No such file or directory

I've checked, it's just not executing the script. I think that the
command-completion part is telling bash that it's in /usr/bin, rather than
 where it really is.

Thing is that other scripts in /usr/local/bin do not have this problem. (One
of them is a script that runs Proof General.)

If I give the fill path, /usr/local/bin/proofgeneral, then it runs fine.

As it turns out, commenting-out the use of /etc/bash_completion in my
.bashrc file fixes this.

Here's the kicker: I'm not even using completion. I just type in the
full name, and bash_completion mucks it up somewhere and says that it's
in a different location.

FYI, the version of ProofGeneral that I cam using comes from
 http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/research/hvg/Isabelle/installation.html#install_linux
and I've installed it in /usr/local/share.

[Bug 109199] Re: [nvidia-glx-new] Kubuntu Login Slides Around the Screen at 1280x1024 + 3 other errors with NVIDIA GeForce 6150

2007-04-25 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
Wow, a mega large comment!

flowingfire:
It sounds like this is actually more of a support query than a bug report and
you may get faster, higher quality responses posting your issues to
https://answers.launchpad.net/ or http://ubuntuforums.org/ ...

the login screen -still- slides around
I have a distant memory that you need to be careful about the order resolutions
are listed in within xorg.conf . On the line Modes [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[EMAIL PROTECTED] make sure that the resolutions that come further to the
right are not larger than the ones on the left. You may also want to remove
resolutions you will absolutely never use.

Then my screen actually lined up correctly at the right resolution
If the resolution was wrong out of the box (with the open source drivers) then
that would be an ideal candidate for a bug of its own. The misalignment is down
to the open source drivers probing monitors differently to the binary
linux/windows nvidia drivers. Assuming your monitor is connected via an analog
cable you can fix it by getting the monitor to auto adjust.

I tried to install Java and it broke all sorts of things rendering the
 operating system unusable
That's awful! Installing java should never do that. Assuming you installed it
from the Ubuntu repositories (and the problem is reproducible) you should
definitely file a bug on that. Having to reinstall to recover just makes the
problem doubly bad.

But my applications black out all the time
You might want to take a look at Bug #96473 .

I feel like I've stretched myself for this OS
That's the way it goes I'm afraid. I've noticed things tend to work best for
those who use them the most but I'm not for people torturing themselves trying
to get stuff going under Linux. If it's that bad I suggest staying with WIndows
for now and perhaps retrying a new live cd in six months time?

[Bug 109932] String translated terrribly in exo

2007-04-25 Thread Miłosz Kosobucki
Public bug reported:

In English Volume can mean a hard drive or sound loudness level. In
Polish there are two separate words for this. In exo someone probably
the wrong suggestion. So now, on freshly installed xubuntu desktop I can
see something like that:

14GB Sound Level (translated from Polish)
instead of
14GB Volume

originally it looks like that
14 GB Głośność
instead of
Napęd 14 GB or Nośnik 14GB

There is no way to translate exo via Rosetta (or at least I didn't
notice one) so how it should be handled? It just looks tragically.

[Bug 109550] Re: Black/unrendered windows in Beryl

2007-04-25 Thread flowingfire
Just a quick update: I did get the black box issue to stop in KDE with
the tip you gave. I started application after application and no black
boxes appeared. Performance of beryl is notably suckier, but it's a
small price to pay to rid myself of the blacked-out applications of
death.

So it's not just gnome your tip works in. Interestingly, I was sort of
able to reproduce the problem, but it wasn't quite the same. I got a
white box in Firefox with, like, 5 other instances open. So I don't
know what to make of that But the situation is vastly improved.

Thanks again for the tip.

The bug appears to be fixed in Feisty (kernel 2.6.20-15-generic). A
16-hour ACPI sleep consumes only 20% of battery. dmesg mentions
radeonfb: forcefully enabling D2 sleep mode on boot and then radeonfb
(:01:00.0): switching to D2 state... on suspend.

Yes, I am using the Nvidia restricted drivers to run Beryl. But I have

additional applets, I have been running for over a day now without
problems.

This is going to be fun to solve.

[Bug 109934] Black and white S-video output only on PAL TVs with i810 video driver

2007-04-25 Thread Motin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-driver-i810

After following the necessary instructions
(http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=361124) on how to direct video
output through S-Video, the TV output turns out black and white only on
PAL TVs, regardless of if the TvStandard-setting is set to PAL.

Posts confirming this issue on both Edgy and Feisty:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=2307163highlight=pal#post2307163

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=2267262highlight=pal#post2267262

The only suggested solutions found are described in these threads, but
are unconfirmed to work:

1. Change TVOutFormat from SVIDEO to COMPOSITE

2. Change TvStandard to PAL-G (mere suggestion - not confirmed to work)

[Bug 44437] Re: External monitor switch does not work on HP Pavilion dv4000 laptop

2007-04-25 Thread Motin
NOTE: This bug does not cover the ability to actuallly switch between
monitors! This ability needs to be manually configured (a relevant bug
on that issue is
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/109934) and can then
with some scripting be assigned to ANY OTHER KEY COMBINATION than Fn+F4
so this bug is only about the key combination Fn + F4 not generating any
key event.

xbindkey still cannot catch any outkey event from Fn+F4 in Feisty.

[Bug 109925] Re: [needs-packaging] zSNES

According to the zsnez web site:

64 bit users having trouble compiling should know that ZSNES is
currently only x86-32 compatible and will not be x86-64 compatible for a
while.

Your best bet would be to convince the devlopers to support 64 bit.
There is little the Ubuntu can do at this point.

[Bug 45404] Re: thinkpad-keys on ThinkPad X60* uses a large amount of CPU

2007-04-25 Thread Kristian Berge Nessa
Update: After running the patched thinkpad-keys for 24 hours, CPU time
is a meagre 1 sec, just a tad better than the 25 minutes it used to
spend a day...

This just seemed to good to be true. So, to verify the correctness of
the patch, here's some background:

The tpb source (from which thinkpad-keys is inspired) says the following:
/* Read only the interesting bytes from nvram to reduce the CPU consupmtion
of tpb */
/* The kernel nvram driver reads byte-by-byte from nvram,
so just reading interesting bytes reduces the amount of inb() calls */

...So I went to the kernel and checked drivers/char/nvram.c, and found:
* Each lseek() calls lock/unlock_kernel()
* Each read() calls spin_lock/unlock_irq (which is expensive)
* Each read() calls nvram_check_checksum (!).

To check the nvram checksum on a PC platform means to inb 30+2 times...
So, instead of saving 6 inb operations as intended, the current grok_nvram
function does (32+1)*4=132 instead of (32+10)=42, spending 90 more than it
should (in addition to any other overhead in calling lseek+read 6 times too
many).
