[Bug 6711] Re: No network printer added

2007-05-10 Thread Till Kamppeter
This works as designed. If a ServerName is set, all CUPS clients:
Command line tools as lpr, lpadmin, ... CUPS-aware apps, as kprinter
(and all KDE apps) or OpenOffice.org, printer setup tools, as the GNOME
CUPS Manager, ... see the CUPS daemon of the machine specified with
ServerName and NOT the local daemon. Only the web interface
(http://localhost:631/) sees the local daemon. the client.conf is to set
up pure CUPS clients, with the local daemon not running or even not
installed.

that this is pretty important information and i wanted to share it.Also
for a little bit more safe restart keep opened and not minimized a

the fact that you can still write on an opened terminal is also
important no??)

[Bug 113897] Blender probably doesn't use some OpenGL extensions

2007-05-10 Thread Darik Horn
I can confirm that this bug happens during the upgrade to Feisty for

The upgrade from Edgy to Feisty will break any computer that has an EVMS
root. The severity of the bug should be increased because it makes
affected computers unbootable.

[Bug 98817] Re: phpmyadmin cookie authentication broken

2007-05-10 Thread Sornen
Same thing with me on an amd64 system, but not on a slower i386 system. I can
get this to work on occasions with cookie enabled, but it is flaky and will
bump me back to the phpmyadmin log on. Seems to be random perhaps, suggesting
a race condition. I used
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['auth_type'] = 'config'

to get phpmyadmin to work.

Re: [Bug 97655] Re: dmraid45 target please

2007-05-10 Thread Lesley McDowell
I don't want or have windows installed. My original intent was to install
Ubuntu with LinuxMCE on a raid 5 configuration. I tried using software raid
but had issues on setting it up in the Ubuntu setup. When I choose create
md devices it says I only have 1 raid partition when it needs a minumum of
3. That's why I headed down the dmraid path. So you are telling me it can
be done as long as it's only a linux machine? That is great news. I guess
I will try again this evening when I get home from work.

On 5/10/07, Chad Bernier [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Yea i figured something like a HTPC might have space limitations.
Lesley, unfortunately, the only way to do what you described involves
giving up Windows. I have assumed you want windows along with Ubuntu on
your PC, because you are using dmraid. If you won't be installing
windows, you don't need fake raid at all. you can use software raid
already built into linux. That will allow you to set up a raid 0 and
raid 5 on the same array, pretty cool :)

[Bug 56246] Re: kacpid-work eat 99% CPU after resuming from hibernate

2007-05-10 Thread Diogo
In my case I only have one kacpid process.
I used various Ubuntu releases and since DAPPER I have this problem. I've
tested EDGY, FEISTY, and all the kernels used in those releases.
As I known kacpid is a communication process between acpi and kernel, in fact
this bug usually starts when I connect or disconnect the battery.
The CPU goes to 75-80-85...-90-95% and there is nothing running.
The pc over heats and the fan doesn't start...When I reboot the pc, the bios
launch the fan, and it starts working in Ubuntu.
I've tested fedora core 6 and the bug is there too, but it allows you to run a
console and launch top, in Ubuntu the only thing I can do is a simulation of
power down (poweroff in the button :P).

I don't know where the bug is but it's thereI've noticed that many
people have this problem, but they do not report, so I think that it is
important to refer it one more time, and if you google around you'll
find more people with it.

I' using an Asus Notebook, and I've noticed that this happens in most of
the cases in notebooks.

[Bug 87796] Re: the calendar of the clock applet is slow

2007-05-10 Thread Joncheyne
I confirm this too

A single click does nothing. A single click every 5 or more seconds does
nothing.

A triple click always works with a single click to close. Further single
clicks of less than 5 seconds apart can then open and close the calendar
drop down.

If, however I select Metacity as my window manager it works fine, if I
select Beryl then I get the above. So it seems to be Beryl that is in
the way.

Is this the right place to post this?

[Bug 91807] Re: evolution per-contact crypto-sign preference

2007-05-10 Thread Mitsch
Just to confirm what Peter Miller wrote. I used Thunderbird/Enigmail and the
encryption integration was a charm. I liked the individual encryption-settings
for each contact.
As I only use GnuPG, the only thing I need is a checkbox, saying: Use
encryption if key is available in the settings for evolution then I didn't
have to activate it any time I want to sent an encrypted message. This would be
even more user-friendly than the Thunderbird/Enigmail solution, because if I
have a public key from someone, I normally want to use it - and if I don't
want, then I have to disable encryption mail by mail OR delete the key with
seahorse (for individual setting) OR uncheck the discribed checkbox (as a
default value). Easy!

[Bug 49068] Re: Java reports time zone incorrectly during CDT (US Daylight saving time)

2007-05-10 Thread Christian Assig
It sounds like we need to divide this into two bugs. My problem has a
lot more to do with the localtime/TZ situation.
I agree. Because of the title of this bug, I suggest we keep track of the time
zone detection in this bug, and someone reports a new bug for the problem
regarding deprecated time zone data in Java's time zone database.

As far as the localtime/TZ situation, why not just handle it during the
 install of the jdk/jre?
Pretty simple: A lot of people have Ubuntu on their laptops and travel from
time zone to time zone (like me e.g.). By just determining the time zone during
the package installation, Java would not be updated once you change the time
zone settings of the operating system, at least not until you install a new
Java package.

Determine if /etc/localtime is a link or not and warn the user that they need
to copy over whatever localtime is linked to if they have a separate mount
for /usr, or set TZ somewhere...
As described above, this does not work either. If you change /etc/localtime to
a symbolic link during the installation of the Java package, it might be
changed back by any program included in Ubuntu that makes any kind of changes
to the time zone settings. If /etc/localtime is a regular file (that is the
current situation), you may encounter the bug described here.

Some thoughts about Allen Crider's suggestions from 2007-05-05:

1. The time zone detection already checks if /etc/localtime is a regular
file or a symbolic link, so why not make it check if the files in
/usr/share/zoneinfo are regular files? Of course, this could cause
trouble if someone decides to change all files in /usr/share/zoneinfo to
symbolic links for some reason. Simply reading /etc/timezone if it
exists would be my personal favourite.

2. Like I said before, I guess there are quite a lot of people using
Ubuntu on laptops that change time zones quite often. So I think if you
want to change the Ubuntu environment to make Sun's current
implementation detect the time zone correctly, you will have to change
all applications in Ubuntu that modify time zones to either set the
environment variable TZ or to create /etc/sysconfig/clock as well.
Setting TZ during boot time would not suffice, as you would have to
reboot every time you change the time zone setting.

3. Very ugly, but it could work. Like I wrote before, you would have to put
something like
export TZ=`cat /etc/timezone`
into the wrapper scripts for all java VM executables.

4. A Java VM is supposed to know the correct time and time zone, and it
should not be the duty of any single Java based application to implement
a workaround. So I guess this is just a workaround, not a bug fix at
all.

[Bug 35251] Re: using nvidia-glx drivers on toshiba satellite 1410 freezes

2007-05-10 Thread Darik Horn
The nvidia-glx package is also broken on Dell Latitude laptops with the
Nvidia GeForce 440 Go video card. The open nv driver successfully
probes the EDID, whereas the closed nvidia driver says:

(WW) NVIDIA(GPU-0): Unable to read EDID for display device CRT-0

The result is a black screen. The nvidia-glx package was functional on
the same hardware in Edgy, so this is a regression in Feisty.

[Bug 82265] Re: Printer output on wrong paper size

2007-05-10 Thread Nicholas Wastell
Can you install the OpenPrinting of Gutenprint again (preferably the
newest version)

Do you mean the gutenprint package? I cannot reinstall -- the same
errors appear because the old package is removed first.

'sudo /var/lib/dpkg/info/gutenprint.prerm remove' produces no screen
output.

Apologies if this is meaningless, but if I do this:

:~$ sudo /var/lib/dpkg/info/gutenprint.prerm
/var/lib/dpkg/info/gutenprint.prerm: line 11: test: !=: unary operator expected
:~$

Is that error significant?

[Bug 113900] Thin Client Manager locks up

2007-05-10 Thread Ted Moore
Public bug reported:

Edubuntu 7.04 Terminal Server loads. Twelve terminal server clients
connect, no problem. At the server, start the Thin Client Manager. The
cpu usage meter on the system monitor goes from 22% to 100% and stays
there. The Thin Client Manager never opens completely and I have to
force it to quit to stop it. Once it is stopped the cpu usage meter
goes back to 20% or so. Running top showed that the student-control
program was listed first with a cpu usage of 6.6%. Checking free showed
that I had 1 G of ram left.

[Bug 105414] Re: Delay on boot with wireless network

2007-05-10 Thread stefanokan
I found a solution that appears as a workaround.
I red this post by Tormod Volden :
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/netbase/+bug/102675
and tried this:
sudo update-rc.d -f networking remove
Than rename the script networking inside /etc/init.d/ (e.g
/etc/init.d/networking.bak)
Than reboot.
Than i had no more delay but the wireless networks did not work.
Make a backup of etc/network/interfaces (e.g. copying as
etc/network/interfaces.bak)
Than rename /etc/init.d/networking.bak in /etc/init.d/networking
Give command: sudo update-rc.d networking multiuser
Rename etc/network/interfaces.bak in etc/network/interfaces
Reboot.
Now you should have no delay on boot and the wireless network on.
I did not understand why, but it works.
Good Luck.

[Bug 96693] Re: poor performance hard disk IDE

2007-05-10 Thread uqbar
Unluckily I cannot. But what is clear is that this is a bug somewhere in
between the EIDE drivers and the SCSI emulation.
I'm experiencing a similar problem. I cannot enable the 32bit mode and the
multi sector I/O.

What I have done in order to try to have some better performances is to:
1. use tha maximum filesystem read ahead values (-a)
2. use the lookahead drive feature (-A)
3. enable the write cache (-W) (read the manual here)
4. enable the dma (-d)

In the meantime I hope the bug will be fixed.

[Bug 113361] Re: Cannot switch language in Wesnoth

2007-05-10 Thread Luciano Montanaro
I fixed this problem (for the Italian language, obviously) by adding the
following line to the /usr/share/locale.alias file:

it_IT it_IT.UTF-8

Maybe something similar should be done for Spanish and any other
language that does not work. I'm not sure this is is the only (or the
best!) way to fix this problem.

[Bug 113905] Asus F3JC and suspend to ram

2007-05-10 Thread Geek87
Public bug reported:

I have Ubuntu 7.04 Festy Fawn installed on my Asus F3JC-AP036H laptop
computer.

When I turn my computer into suspend to ram mode using the top right
corner red button, the computer fastly do this with no problem.

But when I turn back the computer from suspend to ram mode using the
power button of the computer, the computer wakes up quickly and seems to
be normal but the soundcard doesn't work any more. There is no sign
showing it doesn't work, the sound just don't get out of the speaker.

[Bug 61946] Re: [Edgy Data Loss] umount progress dialog missing

2007-05-10 Thread Frode M . Døving
I have a new proposal for gutsy.
Remove current patch to kdebase. (revert to ubuntu19)

I have written a small KDE application that works as a wrapper around
kio_media_mounthelper.
It provides a progressbar, and shows up instantly.

This is a feisty package for the thing at:
 http://frode.kde.no/misc/kio_umountwrapper/

To remove the old progressbar you need /usr/bin/kio_media_mounthelper from
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/feisty/i386/kdebase-kio-plugins/4:3.5.6-0ubuntu19

You can either install the package directly and live with the conflicting
versions or unpack the .deb with the following commands:
$ mkdir debtmp
$ ar xf kdebase-kio-plugins_3.5.6-0ubuntu19_i386.deb
$ tar -zxf data.tar.gz

NOTE: The next command will overwrite your current
/usr/bin/kio_media_mounthelper,
to restore it use the command: 'sudo aptitude reinstall kdebase-kio-plugins'

$ sudo cp usr/bin/kio_media_mounthelper /usr/bin/

You can now test safely removing.

Feedback please!

[Bug 49068] Re: Java reports time zone incorrectly during CDT (US Daylight saving time)

2007-05-10 Thread Christian Assig
A similar bug has already reported at Sun. It is marked as being in
progress, but I have no idea how long it might take until Sun takes care
of it.

See http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6456628

Another fix for this bug might be to rewrite the scanning of
/usr/share/zoneinfo to continue if a file is found that is identical to
/etc/localtime, but whose name does not correspond to a time zone known
to Java.

[Bug 17881] Re: usb flash memory hangs after copying few MB

2007-05-10 Thread zcat
I'm not sure if I have the same problem, but it's quite similar and has
happened on two different machines (both running Feisty), multiple USB
ports, different logins, and with two completely different MP3 players.

I start to copy a significant amount of files, and after a short time I
get all the symptoms of the device having been unplugged. This happens
about one time in ten, perhaps more often if I start copying several
folders in parallel.

I glanced in dmesg the first time it happened and nothing seemed out of
the ordinary, it looked as if I had just unplugged the drive (at the
time I assumed I had just bumped the cable).

[Bug 106060] Re: Selecting the Molecule screensaver makes the PC freeze. It is completely unresponsive.

2007-05-10 Thread RichWolf
Without doing anything except letting my computer go go to the
Molecule screen saver and lockup, then hard restart, I was able to see
the Molecule screen saver and change it to something else.

If you are still having this problem maybe try this by letting the
machine activate the screen saver itself then hard restart. Then go to
the screen saver and change it. Sounds kinda like M$ stuff but it
worked for me. Of course it still doesn't solve why this happens in
the first place.

[Bug 112466] Re: Prompted to Upgrade from Gutsy to Feisty

2007-05-10 Thread Fabien Tassin
Same here for around 2 weeks...while it's not (yet) a problem for me.

I usually answer Close', then let the packages upgrade and deal with
the remaining ones myself. It's with Gutsy so I don't expect anything at
that point, far too early to be peaky. With apt-get/synaptic/dselect,
it's easy to add the new-n-missing dependancies that were not
automatically added by update-manager (maybe this tool should handle
those new dependancies.. maybe not if it makes the UI too complex for
newbies).

At the moment, libgtk2.0-{0,bin,dev} and gtk2-engines-pixbuf are not
upgradable on my system as any of those wants to remove gimp* (I don't
really care), libwfm*, language-support-ja and scim* (I care a lot about
the last two).

Well, I'm patient so no new bug from me for those at the moment :)

Will the new scim back-port to Dapper?

Sorry, I am not involved with backport efforts. Please follow the
instructions on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BackportRequestProcess to
request backports.

Also, your request sounds more like a stable release update issue.
Please also read https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates and see
which is more appropriate, and follow the procedures.

Good luck.

[Bug 46613] Re: Always prints A4 paper

2007-05-10 Thread Richard Wilbur
Installed Ubuntu 7.04 (kernel 2.6.20-15 SMP x86_64) on my Linux box here
at work--a Dell Optiplex 745 (Intel Core 2 6300 @ 1.86GHz, 1GB RAM, 80GB
HD)--on Fri 20 Apr 2007. I have tried configuring an HP LaserJet 8000DN
over JetDirect with PostScript driver and both Paper size and PageRegion
== 'Letter'. Still the print manager test page and evolution always
print to A4 page size as evidenced by printer requesting I load A4
paper. (Evolution used to allow you to pick a paper size and I can't
find that even in advanced options with the new version.) The print
manager would seem like a lovely place to at least display the default
page size--if not allow administrators to adjust it.

I didn't realize /etc/papersize existed, much less it's overarching
significance. I appreciate the note above explaining the dpkg-
reconfigure way to fix this. Although, this is not something I expected
to be broken.

Why do you have to reinstall printers after correcting the default paper
size?

This fixed the print manager test page. Firefox defaults to 'letter'
size! Evolution still tries to print to 'A4' with no visible way to
override.

[Bug 113909] [needs-packaging] LenMus

2007-05-10 Thread Gouchi
Public bug reported:

LenMus is a program to help in the learning of the musical language. Its
integration architecture allows to create interactive books on music:
scores, fully interactive, as well as exercises can be embedded into
texts. It will include a notation editor.

LenMus code is ready to be compiled and built for Linux and Mac OS X.
But we do not have software/hardware to do the porting. If you would
like to contribute by preparing and testing any of these builds you are
welcome.

[Bug 113640] Re: printer randomly stops working

2007-05-10 Thread Stanley Sokolow
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 35638 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/35638

I have some more information and a solution to the problem; well, at
least a work-around and a hypothesis about the underlying bug. My
Brother HL-1440 works perfectly (so far) when connected with the
parallel port instead of USB. That's a cheap alternative compared with
buying a different printer. I checked the Brother-USA web site
regarding the models that have been reported in bug 113640 and the
related (duplicate) bug 35638. These models all come with both USB and
parallel connections. The printer senses which cable is plugged in.
Until the USB problem is solved, these models and perhaps all the
Brother HL series of printers should be connected by parallel port or
ethernet interface if available in that model, rather than USB.

I tried some other experiments to help tunnel in on the nature of the
USB invisibility problem I've described. I don't think its a bug in
the kernel, but rather a bug in the way that the printer driver or CUPS
interprets the printer status data it receives from the printer when
probed on the USB port. As data supporting this hunch, consider this.
I plugged in a different USB printer to the same USB cable instead of
the Brother printer. This test printer was a printer/scanner Lexmark
(model X2250). I did not install a driver yet. I just plugged it in,
turned it on, and booted into Ubuntu 7.04. When I was logged in, I
executed the watch 'lpinfo -v' command and watched. The printer was
seen as a local usb printer with the correct model name. It was
solidly visible, never going invisible from the lpinfo output. So
what's different about the Brother printer? The Brother is a laser
printer and the Lexmark X2250 is inkjet. Lasers have a fuser roller,
which is heated by a heating element inside the roller so that the
roller can melt the dry ink powder into the paper (fusing it to the
paper), but inkjet printers do not. The heating element is temperature
regulated by the printer so it maintains the correct fusing temperature.
To do this, it turns the heater on and off as needed. I have a strong
suspicion that the status data reported on the USB port includes some
indication whether the fuser is at the correct temperature or not, or
perhaps whether current is flowing in the heater element or not. This
would be useful information for a diagnostic program that figures out
whether the printer is functioning correctly, so it's possible that
Brother provided this status data in the USB status dialog, for
diagnostic purposes. If that's true, perhaps the Linux printer driver
developers have mis-interpreted the status data coming in on the USB
port, using the fuser status information as a printer presence
indication (or perhaps as a printer ready or not ready indication).
There probably is a different bit of data in the status message that is
the correct indicator of the printer-ready state, one which corresponds
to the ready LED on the printer itself. If I am correct about this,
the behavior of cycling between visible and invisible would be explained
-- when the fuser cools down and needs to be heated, the fuser status
bit would be interpreted by the driver as printer not present or not
ready, but when the fuser is hot enough and the fuser status bit
changes, then the driver would see the printer as ready. Most likely
this status bit is not present on the parallel cable, which typically
uses one of the pins to indicate printer ready status and there Brother
must be using the correct status. The true ready status or presence
status is surely somewhere in the USB status message, but not where the
driver is looking for it. Please pass this information to the
appropriate printer driver developer somewhere.

Another bug I've noticed during this testing should be reported (if not
already reported yet -- I haven't checked). The Printers window
(brought up by the Printing menu item) shows icons for the printers and
indicates Ready under them. When I unplugged the printer from the
USB cable, or when I added a non-existant printer to the Printers, or
when I turned off the parallel printer, the indication remained ready.
Even when the printer disappears from the lpinfo output, the Printers
window shows it as 'ready. That's not right.

[Bug 86426] Re: Printing fails to correctly render on page (print preview, too)

2007-05-10 Thread Richard Wilbur
I am using a fresh install of Ubuntu 7.04 on a new machine (x86_64 SMP).

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/etc/cups/ppd$ ls
LaserJet-8000.ppd
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/etc/cups/ppd$ grep Default LaserJet-8000.ppd | grep -i A4
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/etc/cups/ppd$ grep Default LaserJet-8000.ppd | grep -i Letter
*DefaultPageSize: Letter
*DefaultPageRegion: Letter
*DefaultImageableArea: Letter
*DefaultPaperDimension: Letter
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/etc/cups/ppd$

Firefox and print-manager test page both work at letter size. I can't
print E-mail messages from Evolution as they are sent to the printer as
'A4' size pages and it asks me to load A4 paper of which I have none. I
hit 'go' on the printer and it tries to print it on 'legal' size paper
which also doesn't work well.

I used Evolution under Ubuntu 6.10 to print on letter size paper all the
time for important messages. Something broke since then.

What other information can I provide to help solve this bug? Where
should I look for the trouble?

[Bug 113911] Ubuntu can't make me french toast

2007-05-10 Thread bluej774
Public bug reported:

Linux still can't make me french toast.

Linux, as a whole, is better than the competition IMHO, but it still
isn't that great because it can't make me french toast. I'm not saying
I'd switch back to Windows if it could make me french toast, but I'd
feel very disillusioned with Linux at that point. If we want Ubuntu to
rise above the competition, both other Linux distributions and Windows,
we should make it able to produce french toast. If we can do that,
Ubuntu will separate itself from the competition.

[Bug 90271] Re: Regression: RealTek 8139 hard-locks system on installation/modprobe (affects Averatec, Philips laptops)

2007-05-10 Thread skrpc
I have found that the problem seems to be with the sdhci driver.

I have posted a message at
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=287939page=4 under the name
skrpc detailing what I did to get a version of linux on an X56 laptop.
I had to use Debian 4 (Etch) as this was the only installation I could
find that did not freeze and allowed me to complete an installation. It
froze when rebooting after the installation had completed but as the
installation had completed I could use rescue mode enabling me to
rebuild my own custom version of the the linux kernel (2.6.18.4) and by
a process of driver elimination led me to remove the module load of the
sdhci driver and all works ok now albeit using Debian 4 rather than
Ubuntu.

[Bug 86798] Re: r8169 driver does not detect link

2007-05-10 Thread dm
Yep. It handles cable plug-in/out, but still provides hang-ups while
uploading data.

[Bug 84603] Re: Hard disk I/O randomly freezes when hald is running and optical drive is empty

2007-05-10 Thread Tomas Siaulys
Looks like the bug is caused by the buggy cd/dvd drive firmware. I crossflashed
my drive and voila - everything works just great. No freezes, no lockups,
everything runs just great. You must use SC03 firmware. If anyone wants to try
out flashing the drive - I took instructions from another bug report here
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.20/+bug/64587
The only thing I did in other way is that I used dos flasher instead of windows
flasher, because windows flasher didn't seem to work for me.
Looks like the drive which is poking around is TssTcorp TS-L632D. I presume all
of you have it too. Take a look at k3b and you'll find out which model you have.
If you decide to flash your drive - be extremely cautious - bad flashing can
damage the drive! Please do it at your own risk.

[Bug 64587] Re: log says ata1 is slow to respond, please be patient

2007-05-10 Thread Tomas Siaulys
Hello,
Thanks a lot Christian - flashing the drive helped me too. I had lots of
problems with my laptop freezing. Looks like the firmware crossflash fixes bug
#84603 too. Moreover, this bug seems like #84603 duplicate. My laptop is Asus
Z35F.

Regards,
Tomas
