Easy and handy! Jimmy Kloss' fix

works fine for me on kubuntu 7.10 and Oo 2.3.0.

Many thanks.

[Bug 25966] Re: NEW PACKAGE: Printer drivers for Brother needed

2008-02-21 Thread Przemysław Kulczycki
I've purged the old drivers, installed the new ones, restarted the system and
the printing still doesn't work.
system-config-printer shows it as idle, and it can't print the test page (the
button changes to cancel test so I cancel the test page after few minutes of
printer being idle).
system-config-printer-applet shows manually added print tasks as finished, even
though nothing was printed.

AFAIK the queue name must be binary_p1, perhaps also leaving the queue
name blank (= printer-internal default) would also work.

Run also lpinfo -v, this command could find a valid URI for this
printer automatically (printer must be connected and turned on).

[Bug 41491] Re: Dapper: Broken dependencies for some wzdftpd modules

2008-02-21 Thread Luca Falavigna
Package wzdftpd-back-pgsql fails to install:

# apt-get install wzdftpd-back-pgsql
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
wzdftpd-back-pgsql: Depends: libpq4 (= 8.1.4) but it is not going to be

I just gave up fighting city hall and distribute my own debian with

IMO if you arbitrarily pull something out of a standard distributed
package that developers and/or users expect to be there, you broke it. In
this case I can't see what harm it would do to keep the lousy thing in
there.

True that it is a different laptop, but it is a laptop, I have

[Bug 44686] Re: Keyboard/mouse actions on laptop should not turn on screen with lid closed

2008-02-21 Thread Andrew Conkling
** Summary changed:

- Pressing multimedia buttons on laptop with lid closed should not turn on
screen
+ Keyboard/mouse actions on laptop should not turn on screen with lid closed

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

My laptop (a Dell Inspiron 6000) has multimedia buttons on the front
that can be used when the lid is closed. My g-p-m settings are to blank
the screen when the lid is closed.

However, when I press the button (e.g. the volume) with the lid closed,
I can see the screen turn back on inside the laptop. What's worse is
that it never turns back off after that, even after the customary
  screensaver delay.

+ Duplicate bug #107399 reports the same behavior when moving an external
+ mouse.
+
  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Set g-p-m to blank the screen with the lid closed.
  2. Close the lid.
- 3. Press a multimedia button.
+ 3. Press a multimedia button, move an external mouse, etc.
  4. Wait for the screensaver to turn on and/or the screen to turn off; no
response.

Re: [Bug 45944] Re: Ubuntu Server Guide Not Installed On Servers

2008-02-21 Thread Matthew East
On Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 6:20 PM, Mathias Gug [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

As of now, the ubuntu-server cd is setup to install the packages from
the ubuntu-standard seed. So the server install can be viewed as a
subset of the desktop install. Packages that are shipped by the server
cd are defined with the server-ship seed. So there are packages on the
server cd that are not installed by default.

Right, so if we want to solve this bug, we could add the
ubuntu-serverguide package to the server-ship seed?

I'm also not convinced that installing by default the serverguide on
every server install is the right thing to do - see my comment above
 [1].

I have to say I don't really understand your position: taken to its
extreme your view means that no documentation should be installed with
the server edition. The serverguide binary is not a large one and
personally I think it's a shoein for inclusion - it's the only
document we have which comprehensively describes how to use the
operating system in one place.

But, since I haven't put much work into this document myself, I don't
really have an interest in pursuing it further than that - the server
team should decide. I've only posted on this bug because I perceived
the view of the documentation team to be that this document should be
shipped.

Re: [Bug 45944] Re: Ubuntu Server Guide Not Installed On Servers

2008-02-21 Thread Mathias Gug

As of now, the ubuntu-server cd is setup to install the packages from
the ubuntu-standard seed. So the server install can be viewed as a
subset of the desktop install. Packages that are shipped by the server
cd are defined with the server-ship seed. So there are packages on the
server cd that are not installed by default.

The current way to add new packages to the ubuntu-server install is to
add a new task in taskel (such as mail server, print server, etc... that
we did for gutsy).

However installing the serverguide package doesn't really fit in
tasksel.

I'm also not convinced that installing by default the serverguide on
every server install is the right thing to do - see my comment above
[1].

[Bug 148003] Re: mounting Luks encrypted USB-HDD does not work reliably

2008-02-21 Thread Toby Collett
With the new package I had success for a couple of days, but this
morning my drive did not mount, I had to manually remove (dmsetup
remove) a temp_cryptsetup_x mapping and then reattach the drive. I
still had to run gnome-mount manually to get the device to mount after
that (gnome-mount -d /dev/sdxx).

It may have actually been a bad unmount as I noticed it came up as
/dev/sdd(2) rather than /dev/sdc2 which was available by the time I
looked. After the dmsetup remove and the replug it was at sdc.

2008-02-21 Thread loko
Well,

this bug is also driving me crazy. how annoying it is to get this not
fixed.

but ppl. maybe this will help you a little bit

start gconf-editor and go to totem:

change:
brightness 32639
contrast 16191
hue 32767
saturation 8135

well, the really annoying thing is if these values are changed by totem from
time to time, also mplayer and others are affected.
it's normal since it depends on the video-driver.
i wonder that even these drivers are open-source this cannot get fixed. what a
pity.

[Bug 45944] Re: Ubuntu Server Guide Not Installed On Servers

2008-02-21 Thread Adam Sommer
Hello,

For me the deciding factor is, will the documentation on the web site be
updated on launch day? If it will take some time before the site is
updated than I think the package should be installed by default and the
motd updated with instructions on viewing the local docs.

Personally I look to web documentation before using local copies, but
from earlier comments others probably do the reverse.

Thanks,
Adam

[Bug 35969] Re: Default mouse cursor does not revert when uninstalling Kubuntu

2008-02-21 Thread Daniel Hahler
Confirmed on Hardy.
dpkg -P kubuntu-default-settings (8.04-11) does:
$ LANG=C sudo dpkg -P kubuntu-default-settings 21 | tee /tmp/dpkg-p.log
(Reading database ... 385424 files and directories currently installed.)
Removing kubuntu-default-settings ...
Unsetting kubuntu as default mouse cursor theme ...
Purging configuration files for kubuntu-default-settings ...
dpkg - warning: while removing kubuntu-default-settings, directory
`/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/icons/default' not empty so not removed.
dpkg - warning: while removing kubuntu-default-settings, directory
`/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/icons' not empty so not removed.

`/usr/X11R6/lib/X11' not empty so not removed.
dpkg - warning: while removing kubuntu-default-settings, directory
`/usr/X11R6/lib' not empty so not removed.

That's when I've started messing around with this directory and move it away.
Doing so made update-alternatives fail on the next purging (bug 194101).
So it seems like update-alternatives somehow caused the DMZ cursor theme to be
selected.

It seems that /var/lib/dpkg/alternatives/x-cursor-theme got messed up, only
having:
auto
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/icons/default/index.theme

/usr/share/icons/DMZ-White/cursor.theme
50
/usr/share/icons/DMZ-Black/cursor.theme
30

After executing manually the postinst of industrial-cursor-theme, which was
installed already, it seems to have been added now:
sudo update-alternatives --install /usr/share/icons/default/index.theme
x-cursor-theme /usr/share/icons/Industrial/cursor.theme 40

$ cat /var/lib/dpkg/alternatives/x-cursor-theme
auto
/usr/share/icons/default/index.theme

/usr/share/icons/DMZ-White/cursor.theme
50
/usr/share/icons/DMZ-Black/cursor.theme
30
/usr/share/icons/Industrial/cursor.theme
40

Seems like some update-alternatives issue to me.
Is there an easy way to reproduce this? Seems like some odd leftover from
during upgrades. Is there an easy way to reproduce this? What does
/var/lib/dpkg/alternatives/x-cursor-theme look like for you?

Workaround appears to be: reinstall industrial-cursor-theme or otherwise
fix the x-cursor-theme alternative link.

2008-02-21 Thread unggnu
I have made a simple script to do these changes mentioned by loko. The problem
is, that Totem doesn't recognizes the changes on the fly like gconf and Totem
has to be run to transfer the changes to X. So it is definitely a Totem problem.
Just download it, mark it as executable and add a link to you panel. Everytime
the color is wrong close the video player an run it. Totem will be run and
closed after some seconds. Maybe the sleep time has to be adjusted on slower
PCs. Btw I would use another player like VLC or something like that. This
problem appears only after Totem or maybe gstreamer use.

[Bug 44686] Re: Keyboard/mouse actions on laptop should not turn on screen with lid closed

2008-02-21 Thread Andrew Conkling
Perhaps, or it simply affects the same packages on both sides (e.g.
gnome-screensaver and kde-screensaver). I don't know enough off the top
of my head to say, but I'm going off of Matthew Garrett's word, who
changed the affected package, as to the source of the problem.

[Bug 159241] Re: [Tracking Bug] PCI resource allocation warnings

2008-02-21 Thread Pradeep Varadarajan
Please see the bootcharts for my laptop: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BootCharting
Search for PCI warnings, you'll find two images: one for gusty and one for
hardy. My laptop is in I/O state for the first 15 seconds. Usually this is max
5 secs.

[Bug 25966] Re: NEW PACKAGE: Printer drivers for Brother needed

2008-02-21 Thread Sebastian Keller
I just installed the packages from 19th february and everything works
fine, but I saw that they still put files into /usr/local like the
original Brother packages. As far as I know debian packages should not
put files into /usr/local, but use /usr instead.

[Bug 25966] Re: NEW PACKAGE: Printer drivers for Brother needed

2008-02-21 Thread Saïvann Carignan
Sebastian Keller : Thanks for your testing! Can you tell us which
printer did you test? I take a list of printers which works/does not
works to help hunting bugs. Concerning /usr/local/, I defended this idea
pretty hard too and already provided patches for the cups wrapper source
files to use the /usr folder instead, however some files seems to be
hardcoded in the binary LPR files distributed under the Brother license.
It gives us no choice but to use /usr/local.. That's bad but yet it
seems that we must accept it.
