[Bug 229972] Re: libgtk2.0-dev: Depend : libgtk2.0-0 (=2.12.9-3ubuntu2) but 2.12.9- 3ubuntu3 must be install

2008-05-15 Thread Emilio Pozuelo Monfort
What's the output of 'apt-cache policy libgtk2.0-0 libgtk2.0-dev' in
your system?

2.12.9-3ubuntu2 is from hardy and 2.12.9-3ubuntu3 from hardy-updates
Do you have hardy-updates enabled? If not, does enabling it make a difference?
(you can enable it at software-properties-gtk)

[Bug 205478] Re: Can't switch between consoles

 That's because there are only 7 consoles (X runs on # 7).

Yes, but that doesn't alter the fact that a keyboard shortcut that dumps

unhelpful feature.

[Bug 54621] Re: Kernel panic - not syncing: IO-APIC + timer doesn't work!

2008-05-15 Thread Sense Hofstede
This issue still exists in hardy heron amd64. I've got an Asus M3N78-EH as
motherboard. But the only way I get this message is when I try to boot the
breezy Live CD. In hardy with the options splash and quiet removed it stops
after it detected the SATA II harddisk. If I disable APIC in the BIOS there is
one more line, which tells me that there is no floppy and it stops too. After
it times out it tries again and again until I get into BusyBox.
I had almost the same issue with my old motherboard, and Asus M2NPV-VM. If you
can read Dutch, I've posted the story about that here:

[Bug 230811] [NEW] virtualbox does not redraw background in seamless/compiz mode

2008-05-15 Thread Rocko
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: virtualbox-ose

When

a) virtualbox is in seamless mode via the File / Seamless Mode option;

b) and compiz is enabled;

c) and all of virtualbox's windows are minimized so that only the task
bar is shown;

then virtualbox does not redraw the screen background properly.

In this case, I am running windoze XP, and if I click on the XP start
menu, it draws it, but when I click again to minimize it, the menu
remains visible (although it has been minimized).

If I then click on the virtualbox icon, it displays a corrupted
background (ie a combination of random pixels and windows that were
being displayed earlier).

It works correctly if you have at least one (XP) window non-minimized.

Version info:

ubuntu 8.04 (amd64)
virtualbox 1.5.6-dfsg-6ubuntu1
compiz 1:0.7.4-0ubuntu6

[Bug 192720] Re: Loading b43legacy freezes computer

2008-05-15 Thread jimmy muldoon
Brian, you might not have to remove the wifi card to install the OS, you
should hopefully be able to install from the 'Alternate Install CD'
which uses a text-based installer instead of actually booting up a full
ubuntu (which hangs as it reaches that driver). This is what I did, and
it installed ubuntu fine.

Just be aware that even when you have it installed and try to boot then,
it might hang again as it tries to load that driver. (again, this is
what I experienced).

The way to make your system boot is by blacklisting the guilty driver as
described previously in this thread by pjina3, by using either the
ubuntu cd in repair mode (not ridiculously difficult but might be a bit
hard if you're new at this stuff) or by using a knoppix cd as mentioned,
to edit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist as described. I was actually able to
boot an ubuntu 7.10 livecd on the same laptop to edit the blacklist
file, you might want to give that a shot.

Once you have that driver blacklisted (I eventually blacklisted both the
bcm43xx and b43legacy drivers) and reboot without the cd inserted you
should hopefully have a working install (apart from wireless); then if
you have a wired ethernet port you can download updates using that.

As the guys say, a fix to the wifi driver problem has been submitted so
hopefully when that gets pushed down via updates you should be able to
get it over your wired connection. Failing that if you need the wifi
card working in a hurry you can try the fixes suggested above by David
Fokkema or Larry Finger.

Best of luck.

[Bug 54621] Re: Kernel panic - not syncing: IO-APIC + timer doesn't work!

2008-05-15 Thread Sense Hofstede
I'm sorry, but I forgot again something. The first story happened after
I replaced my old motherboard, without reinstalling the system. The
second case happened much earlier with the motherboard I replaced. I had
just to install the system in with the alternate CD and remove powernowd
before/very soon after the graphical environment was loaded. That would
stop it from freezing and APIC could be re-enabled. After I updated the
BIOS of the M2NPV-VM I could enable APIC again and install powernowd
without problems. I filed bug 85370 to report this.

[Bug 43961] Re: Power down after shutdown does not work...

2008-05-15 Thread Bibliophile
The shutdown/reboot was also hanging on my Acer Travelmate 290 laptop.
I'm running Hardy Heron 8.04. After reading this thread, I tried a few
things, and the grub menu setting that has had the most success is this:

acpi=force nolapic

I can now (knock on wood) shutdown and restart properly. Before, both
processes would hang almost immediately--there was not even a splash
screen, just black (no activity shown on the hard drive LED, but the fan
and my USB external drive were both still running). I had to physically
power down from there. But the grub setting above seems to have worked
for both shutdown and restart.

However, the system still will not suspend or hibernate properly. It
will not resume from suspend mode--forcing me to physically shut down
with the power button (*shudder*).

[Bug 230814] [NEW] Compiz Eatting Memory On Hardy 64 ATI 200m

2008-05-15 Thread James Bruce
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

Hey guys,

I just recently installed Hardy 64 on my dv5000. I didn't have any
problems wiith the drivers installing fglrx thru ENVYNG with ease. I
rebooted, and immediately the card recognized the card and driver thus
enabling affects as shown below:

OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI Radeon Xpress Series
OpenGL version string: 2.1.7412 Release

Now this is where it get's tricky and I cannot seem to wrap my head
around this. When idling with Desktop manager enabled compiz just EATS
at my ram (512mb) going at about 8 mb a min or so. When I disable this
of course the issue is gone and the ram is returned. Well I did some
research and apparently it is a card issue with handling OpenGL. Well I
decided to test this..So I ran GLXgears for 10 minutes, the FPS was fine
the whole time...Memory didn't move one inch. So my theory of this being
leaky GL is now out the window...I'm not TO sure what to do next, Now I
am not sure what to do, as my Video runs fine, Glxgears runs fine, Full
Screen video playback is fine...Just Compiz is leaking...And It's a
shame that I cant enjoy this feature. Any help or ideas will help.

While I was making my previous comments the computer that's having the

testing I expected it to be in the BusyBox, but instead it had booted!
I'm attaching kern.log, messages, acpid and syslog. You can see the SATA

[Bug 230817] [NEW] Freeze on logout/relog, switch user...

2008-05-15 Thread Depape
Public bug reported:

Whenever I do one of the following:

- logout and then try to login again
- attempt to switch to another user
- use ctrl-alt-F1 and then ctrl-alt-F7 again

my machine completely freezes - I'm left with black screen and cursor
only, keyboard doesn't work at all (including numlock key), mouse is not
responding, any combination of ctrl-alt-backspace, ctrl-alt-sysRq...
does nothing... only thing I can do is hard reboot.

Those things happen with compiz on or with compiz off.

I've seen lots of posts with people having similar problems all over the
net. And also so many numerous different suggestions how to fix this
that I don't even know where to start tackling this problem.

options forcedeth msi=0 msix=0

[Bug 74454] Re: [network-admin] net-mgr doesn't remember location

2008-05-15 Thread gverig
not sure how voting works or if there is any but ... hear hear! I am not sure
if Network Manager never saves location or if it depends on the setup but:
1) there is no way (that I know of) to add details (like domain resolution)
without working with locations
2) there is no way (that I know of) to make location default or to make it
'autorecognize' by subnet or something.

So at the moment I do use location and I have to set location every time
I reboot (or go into suspend, I think it resets then too, suspend
stopped working with Heron so I can't test)

I will look into source but... I am pretty lame with linux/C++ :(

[Bug 230818] [NEW] Login and default panels don't utilize full resolution

2008-05-15 Thread Prodoc
Public bug reported:

After installing Ubuntu 8.04, or running it from the live CD for that
matter, the top and bottom panels don't utilize the maximum resolution.
The same goes for the login screen. While the bottom panel can be
dragged to the bottom of the screen, resulting in a maximized width
panel, I've found no way to achieve the same for the top panel.
Applications, on the other hand, can be maximized to the full screen
resolution. When prompted for the password for admin actions, only the
small resolution is being grayed out.

Attached you'll find three images, illustrating the issue.

How can I fix the issue? I'd like to have everything working on the full
desktop resolution.

[Bug 195982] Re: Shift key (and caps lock) stop working when using VMWare

2008-05-15 Thread Brian Haley
Like others, I have the same problem - Hardy with 2.6.24-16 kernel
(amd64) running vmplayer 2.0.3 build-80004. If I highlight any text
inside the vm (running XP) and ctrl-c to copy everything stops working -
setxkbmap did fix it for me though.

[Bug 230823] [NEW] Firefox import doesn't import anything during Ubuntu installation

2008-05-15 Thread Prodoc
Public bug reported:

During the installation of Ubuntu I got presented with the wonderful
option to import the Firefox stuff from the existing Windows XP
installation. After everything was completed and I was ready to use
Firefox in Ubuntu, nothing was imported at all. No bookmarks, no saved
passwords, nothing. Shouldn't this have been the case? Is there an
option to import the stuff again?

Specs:
OS 1: Windows XP SP3 (with Firefox 2.x)
OS 2: Ubuntu 8.04 (with Firefox 3.x)

[Bug 230826] [NEW] Keyboard Layout selector doesn't work under 8.04

2008-05-15 Thread Paul
Public bug reported:

Hello there,

I'm runnign Xubuntu 8.04 on a IBM X40. Happy with it, but there is this
annoying bug;

I have an external keyboard attached (German-standard) which I sometimes
use. Thus I have added the 'de' model in the Xubuntu keyboard layout
settings screen.

Now every time I start up the laptop, the keyboard layout does not
function anymore.

Instead of getting 'This is a sunny day' I get ˘Þħïß ïß á ßüññ« ð᫢
when I select the German layout and use the external German keyboard.

Now please note the following:
- It worked fine under Xubuntu 7.10. Never had a problem.
- Deleting and then re-adding the 'de' layout in the keyboard layout settings
screen solves the problem, as long as I do not restart the laptop.
- My normal layout 'nl' works fine.

Hope that somebody can fix this! I'm a real noob so I wouldn't have a
clue on how to solve it...

[Bug 230828] [NEW] problemas con compiz...ayuda!

2008-05-15 Thread daniel_fisi
Public bug reported:

He
maravilla. Tambien hace unos dias habia instalado algunas

[Bug 229614] Re: psi crashes on appearance options

The problem seems to be that some sources were kept enabled during the

packages to hardy version (4.3.4).

[Bug 230832] [NEW] apt /usr/lib/apt/methods/http has proxy issues

2008-05-15 Thread Ashwin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apt

Description:Ubuntu 8.04
Release:8.04
Source package is: apt-0.7.9ubuntu17

I am behind a proxy and apt /usr/lib/apt/methods/http does not use the correct
http headers when fetching the .tar.gz file. This seems to be a combination of
problems and I am not sure if the proxy is buggy or the originating website is
buggy. So instead of getting a gzip file, I get a gunzipped tar file from the
proxy when I try to get any source packages.
This subsequently fails checksum.

Can you please apply this patch, it is just one line:

diff -r apt-0.7.9ubuntu17/methods/http.cc ../apt-0.7.9ubuntu17/methods/http.cc
687a688,691
// generate proper encoding
if (Itm-Uri.substr(Itm-Uri.length() - 3) == .gz) {
strcat(Buf, Accept-Encoding: gzip,deflate\r\n);
}

It simply adds the correct Accept-Encoding header flag while requesting
a .gz file. This fixes my problem and I can do a apt-get source from
behind a proxy as well.

[Bug 230835] [NEW] GVFS SSH seemingly ignores group permissions

2008-05-15 Thread ISV_Damocles
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gvfs

On the server I connect to through SSH, there is a directory owned by
root and a special group, chmodded 770, to prevent users not part of the
group from accessing the data. My user account on the server is part of
this group, and therefore has full access to the contents of this
directory.

In Nautilus, I'm fully capable of reading the contents of this directory
(meaning it must be noting the g+r permission) but it refuses to copy
anything into this path, as I was capable of doing before in Ubuntu
7.10.

My guess is that since the code already demonstrates the capability of
getting the correct group read permissions, the fix should be adding a
few extra lines to the code that determines write permission support.

[Bug 46046] Re: wrong keyboard layout when reconfiguring xserver-xorg

2008-05-15 Thread Markus Johansson
Have the same problem (ubuntu hardy 8.04). I think it first appeared
when i reconfigured xserver-xorg.

If you look at the attachment it showing, In System Preferences
Keyboard Layouts, it doesn't matter which language i have chosen(with
the radio button), it only matters which one that is one the top. The
topmost one is the one being used in the test typing field.
