[Bug 264943] Re: gvfsd-smb crashed with SIGSEGV in strlen()

2008-12-16 Thread Kai Blin
The ls command in smbclient works just as expected against a Samba
server. I suspect that the server's handling of the list command is
broken, but I'd need a network trace of this. Ideally for a directory
that contains multiple files with multiple suffixes, running ls, ls
*.one of the suffixes ls filename.* and ls filename.suffix.

However, this is a separate issue as well, so how about you open a new
bug report for this? Feel free to subscribe me to that.

Cheers,
Kai

[Bug 264943] Re: gvfsd-smb crashed with SIGSEGV in strlen()

2008-12-16 Thread Thierry Carrez
Could someone that can reproduce it post the ERRHRD - 39 error as a separate
bug ? I don't feel like posting a bug that I can 't even reproduce myself...
Note that the two bugs are very linked, since you can't see the second one
before the first one is fixed (and they should be fixed in the same update).
Even if this is probably caused by poor server-side implementation, I'd still
consider it a regression in Samba client since reading and writing were
successful on previous versions of smbclient...

I'm less convinced by the ls *.txt issue which sounds very server-
related... but please also post it as a separate bug if you want further
investigation on it.

If someone knows a way of telling those strange NAS from the working
ones, let me know so that I can avoid them :)

Once winbind is removed you should not get the idmap errors in your logs
anymore. Those were related to a half-configured winbind server on your
Ubuntu client. However your problem is not solved yet, we just removed
noise.

What command or action are you doing to access your Samba share ? Are
you using nautilus ? Using a cifs/smbfs mount command or /etc/fstab ?
Using smbclient ? How does it crash ? Any error ?

[Bug 264943] Re: gvfsd-smb crashed with SIGSEGV in strlen()

2008-12-16 Thread Kai Blin
Well, you'd probably see the ERRHRD - 39 bug if you try to put a file
without doing an ls first, on a broken CIFS server. But anyway,
separate report for this, please. We can discuss if it's really
something that should be fixed in Samba that report ;)

A good way to get a working NAS box is to get one that's running a 3.x
version of Samba, in my biased opinion. At least in that case you won't
have any trouble convincing me that any CIFS issues you're seeing are a
Samba problem ;)

[Bug 264943] Re: gvfsd-smb crashed with SIGSEGV in strlen()

2008-12-16 Thread Richard Wooding
On my Iomega Home Network Harddrive 500gb NAS I experience the ERRHD 39
bug after applying the patch.

I would love to file a new bug report to have it looked at, but I need
some hand holding, in describing the error in the correct terms.
Especially since you have to first patch the first bug before the second
one is revealed. If somebody could help me with the description and any
other things I need to do get the second bug report right I would
appreciate it. I am weary to file a bug report with help.

From the discussion I get the feeling that there is a real possibility
the CIFS server implementation on my Iomega NAS is faulty. Note this:
this NAS is marketed with Linux compatibility as a selling point on the
packaging!!

I have logged an open issue with Iomega and pointed them at this thread,
as well as the related debian and samba ones, I have requested that they
investigate the possibility that their CIFS server implementation is
faulty and release a firmware upgrade for their customers.

If anybody does file an additional bug report I would like to bring them
in on that thread as well.

As I can reproduce the bug, can somebody get back to me on the correct
way of filing the second bug report.

[Bug 264943] Re: gvfsd-smb crashed with SIGSEGV in strlen()

2008-12-16 Thread rossjenkins
I can concur with Kai Blin re: the ls command parsing behaviour in
smbclient. I tested the smbclient ls command on a working Hardy system
against the same IOmega NAS that is giving me problems (under Intrepid)
and it produces the same results, so I don't think that it is related to
the ERRHRD -39 problem.

All I know about the embedded server in the IOmega NAS is that it is
some kind of linux server. The embedded linux on the NAS also handles
some other slight of hand such as transparently breaking files larger
than 4 GB into smaller pieces. It does this because it only will work as
a NAS if its hard drive is formatted as FAT32. IOmega claims that FAT32
gives it the broadest range of compatability since Windows, Mac OS and
Linux/Unix can all read and write that format. The NAS also has a local
USB2 port, as well as a 10/100 ethernet port, so the embedded linux must
have a fairly complete communication suite.

Thierry, would it help if I set my NAS up in a DMZ off my router so that
it is exposed to the great unwashed internet? Maybe you would be able to
test against it then? I'd have to experiment a bit to see what IP
address it would end up with so you could access it via smb, but 'm
willing to give it a try.

[Bug 264943] Re: gvfsd-smb crashed with SIGSEGV in strlen()

2008-12-16 Thread Richard Wooding
Hear, hear Ross. I undoubtedly have a similar NAS.

Another option I can think of of is SSH forwarding some CIFS ports on my
NAS via a server I have in the United States. (In this way making the
ports publicly available).

This would allow the developers to test against by NAS.

Please get back to me, if this would be useful.

[Bug 264943] Re: gvfsd-smb crashed with SIGSEGV in strlen()

2008-12-16 Thread rossjenkins
For what it is worth, write access to my IOmega NAS using WinXP in a
virtual machine environment on my Linux box works just fine. See
attached screen shot which shows the result of having just dragged
dropped a file called bookmarks.html into the NAS window.

This definitely seems to point to a Samba regression of some kind as
Thierry Carrez has suggested. I mean when WinXP works with an embedded
linux Samba in the NAS but Ubuntu Intrepid doesn't, something just
ain't right. :-)

Richard Wooding, your SSH port forwarding idea might work better than my
DMZ one since I can't figure out how to get around the private address
range (192.168.0.xxx) for the NAS when it is exposed to the internet.
Maybe some kind of virtual server and port forwarding arrangement in my
router would work? I'm getting out of my networking depth here...

Blueprint changed by Arnaud Quette:

Whiteboard changed to:

  - Debian ITP (done)
  - Debian package upload (mostly done, upload underway)
  - Ubuntu sync (waiting)

* Network UPS Tools - NUT:
  - DeviceKit-power integration (under talk with Richard Hughes, scheduled for
2.4)
  - dummy-ups repeater mode (communication link redundancy and forwarding)
(done, trunk)
  - base PDU support (~6 SNMP units) (done, trunk)
  - extended PDU support, through libpowerman (done, trunk)
- configuration improvements: provide some library / backend to develop a
config wizard (python and/or debconf). configuration is definitely NUT's
weakest point, apart from the HAL/DK-p backends! (approved for 2.4, but only if
available in time ; work started on Augeas lens)
  - sub devices (present UPS' outlets as devices, to allow per outlet
subscription and management) (postponed for 2.4.1)
  - virtual devices (composite devices, made of several UPSs (parallel, serial
or sequential redundancy modes) and/or PDUs) (under consideration for 2.4
branch)

Ok, seems like we're also tracking the write problem in the same Samba bug, so
I'd suggest we keep the discussion here after all. I can confirm that if this
worked with Samba 3.0 and works with Windows, there's a Samba bug we need to
fix. Could anyone get me a trace of Samba 3.2 trying to put a file onto the NAS
and Samba 3.0 putting a file onto the NAS?
That's probably easier than working out how to make the NAS accessible from the
network.

[Bug 264943] Re: gvfsd-smb crashed with SIGSEGV in strlen()

2008-12-16 Thread rossjenkins
Kai Blin:

I should be able to do those traces using Wireshark since I have both
Hardy and Intrepid installed on two different machines. Does it matter
if the Hardy install is via wireless to the router? I shouldn't think
so. One other tidbit about the IOmega NAS from their brief technical
spec they say that Linux must use Samba 3 or later. This does suggest
that the NAS also uses a version of Samba 3.

One more test I just completed was to revert samba-common to version 3.0
.28a-1ubuntu4.7 and smbclient to version 3.0.28a-1ubuntu4.7 which are
the Hardy versions for those two packages. Doing this allowed an
smbclient put to the NAS to work correctly but did not fix write
access via Nautilus. Unfortunately I couldn't revert nautilus-share and
libsmbclient because of package dependency issues. I have reinstalled
Thierry's latest ppa version of the Samba packages so I will use those
for the 3.2 trace and the Hardy install for the 3.0 trace.

I'll have the traces done by tomorrow.

- A patch in Samba 3.2.6 fixes the crash bug, but does not correctly display
all the directories.
- The patch I posted, which fixes the display problem, has been pushed to the
v3-2-test branch and will be in the next 3.2. bugfix release.
- Not addressed so far is the smbclient put regression, still working on this.

Ross:
I very much doubt Iomega is shipping a Samba3 install. Samba3 replies to the
list dir request with an info level 260 reply, info level 1 is _ancient_.

[Bug 285366] Re: fglrx in mesa mode

2008-12-16 Thread Tares
Okay, I will try that.

I want to share my few thoughts about this. Recently I've moved to
ubuntu 8.10 amd64 thanks to flash 64 and java 64 plugins, anyway with
fglrx 8.12 release, the building package for ubuntu is fixed so trying
this method I've installed fglrx first on live CD, I was really shocked
and happy that finally everything looked normal, I mean
fglrxinfo/glxinfo/amdcccle. So without a second thought, I've installed
x86_64 and done the same thing, but now on fresh install. Unfortunately
I was back to the start.

Anyway with a little tries and changes, I've came with this thing. I always had
fusion-icon added to autostart, and with it fglrxinfo/glxinfo looked like
before. But when I removed it from autostart, and ubuntu booted to metacity
(compiz turned off) fglrxinfo says :
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series
OpenGL version string: 2.1.8304 Release
As you can see, it's a little improvement. Games reports that now I'm using
OpenGL 2.1 and most of all, they works without any problems. I've tried to
investigate a little in that direction, so I've changed xorg.conf a little, but
that didnt bring more help.

Situation looks like this : fglrxinfo/glxinfo states that everything is
perfectly fine. Games/OpenGL programs works but amdcccle stills report
mesa mode.

Maybe you need to do cp -R $HOME/.nvclock /root for use correctly my

A question, it's possible than smartdimer/nvclock increase the live of

[Bug 230036] Re: package console-setup 1.21ubuntu8 failed to install/upgrade:

2008-12-16 Thread Maarten Hoogveld
I probably had the same problem. Todays upgrades for 8.10 included
console-setup1.25ubuntu4
During the upgrade process by update manager, I got a message something like
this:
There are keyboard options in /etc/default/console-setup that are no longer
supported. The configuration file is not updated
with a cancel, back and next button. I pressed the Next button.
A little while I got exactly the same message. This time I pressed Back (just
to see it would do)
That's when I got the error message:
E: console-setup: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit
status 10
I will attach the console-setup file.

The system is fairly fresh. It's a clean install of 8.10 in use for
about a month.

The console output in case it's needed:

[Bug 308473] [NEW] konsole doesn't respect 'show menubar' setting

2008-12-16 Thread Jeremy Kerr
Public bug reported:

After doing an upgrade today (bringing konsole to
4:4.1.3-0ubuntu1~intrepid1), my konsole sessions no longer respect the
'Show Menubar' setting on start.

I have konsole configured to hide the menubar by default. When I start a
new konsole session, the menubar is always shown. Also, the 'Show
Menubar' menu item (in the View menu) is deselected, indicating that the
menubar should be disabled.

[Bug 223005] Re: nvidia-settings wrong resolution of external display

2008-12-16 Thread overtoperative
I'd been having problems displaying to my Bravia from my Nvidia 8600GTS.
I tried using the nvidia-xsettings tool to enable the TV, which was
visible, but it would complain that the modeline was not valid. It
looks like the virtual line in my screen section was preventing the
nvidia-settings tool from working:

Virtual 1600 1200

I commented it out and was able to use all of the nvidia-settings
options.

[Bug 308477] [NEW] [Intrepid] ATA module keeps ubuntu from starting on HP EliteBook 8730w

2008-12-16 Thread Johan
Public bug reported:

I have a HP EliteBook 8730w:
http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en/sm/WF06a/321957-321957-64295-3740645-3329741-3784202.html

About 70% of the times I try to boot my computer it freezes when loading
modules. Waiting around in the bootup (forever) gives me a raised ATA
exception. I'm not quite sure why this happens but it does. It's (for
obvious reasons) quite hard to provide logs from one of these bootups,
though. The exception however looks as follows:

[ 163.356537] ata1.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x6 frozen
[ 163.356810] ata1.00: cmd 25/00:08:78:b1:25/00:00:17:00:00/e0 tag 0 dma 4096

(timeout)
[  163.357313] ata1.00: status: { DRDY }
[ 163.357585] ata1: hard resetting link

There are also times when the bootup process doesn't even get that far,
but for now I'm hoping it is related to this issue. Attaching some
(hopefully) helpful things.

[Bug 285843] Re: When changed Screen Resolution, theme changed temporarily.

2008-12-16 Thread Łukasz Góralczyk
I can confirm same behaviour. My laptop is sometimes connected to
external LCD monitor. When I disconnect it and reboot I get strange
resolution - after switching back to native resolution GTK theme is
switched to some default (look, colours, icons).

Steps to reproduce:
1) Start Monitor Resolution Settings.
2) Change resolution to other than currently set.
3) Theme is set to default.
4) Side effects: when trying to reset the theme using Appearance applet this
error appears: Unable to start the settings manager 'gnome-settings-daemon'
[...]; X crash after trying to start Appearance one more time; setting the
resolution doesn't work any more.

Current solution: log out and log in again.

My hardware: Benq P52 laptop (AMD64, 2 GB RAM, ATI X1600 /fglrx/, Ubuntu
8.10).

[Bug 231376] Re: Freeze with blinking Caps Lock LED after successful wakeup

2008-12-16 Thread MedO
This bug didn't happen anymore since the original report, neither in
Hardy, nor in Intrepid (though I never used Wicd in Intrepid, so that's
at least one other factor changed). Also, I sold the laptop in question
two days ago, so I can't do any further tests.

[Bug 308483] [NEW] Network manager show disconnected even though network connection is perfectly OK [ Intrepid Ibex ].

2008-12-16 Thread Nikos Paraschou
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

Today, right after installing the latest updates, the network-manager
shows that I am disconnected from the network even though I am connected
and I can surf using firefox.

I found a duplicate of this bug (

but it does not seem to refer to Intrepid.

[Bug 306168] Re: Unable to connect network drive SAMBA Share

2008-12-16 Thread Thierry Carrez
Once winbind is removed you should not get the idmap errors in your logs
anymore. Those were related to a half-configured winbind server on your
Ubuntu client. However your problem is not solved yet, we just removed
noise.

What command or action are you doing to access your Samba share ? Are
you using nautilus ? Using a cifs/smbfs mount command or /etc/fstab ?
Using smbclient ? How does it crash ? Any error ?

[Bug 44082] Re: GNOME Panel icons (on right side) move apparently randomly on session start in some situations

2008-12-16 Thread Gordon
I have a similar problem to greyor. I have a laptop with a screen
resolution of 1280x768, and sometimes use an external monitor with a
resolution of 1280x1024. Recently I had to rebuild the top gnome panel
(using the laptop resolution) and then locked most off the icons to the
panel. I then shutdown the laptop connected the external monitor and
booted up again. By default both screens are in use, but the external
monitor is not being used at its optimum resolution, so I tend to change
it to 1280x1024 and this causes the laptop display to switch off. ( I am
ok with this). However I then find that the gnome display get a bit
muddled, in particular the icons on the top panel (RHS) ie logout,
screen lock, volume control, calender, cpu speed, system monitor,
network monitor, randomly change position, when they have been locked to
the panel. I have also notice this behaviour on the lower panel as
well.

Strangely it only seems to affect icons / applets on the right had side
of the panel.
