It looks related to bug 303458 (and his evil duplicate bug 302092)
The problem we solved was bug 260687 (libpam-smbpass segfault caused by
missing /var/lib/samba), but there seem to be a case of /var/lib/samba/
contents corruption triggering a similar segfault.

What's the basis for claiming that there's a corruption problem? I haven't
seen tdb corruption in samba for many years.

The backtrace in this bug isn't a corruption issue at all; the
get_global_sam_sid() call panics if called by a process that can't create or
read /var/lib/samba/secrets.tdb. The trick is that libpam-smbpass isn't
supposed to call get_global_sam_sid() - so something has changed here.

[Bug 292791] Re: silent login/gdm failures and sudo segfaults with smbpasswd enabled

2009-01-21 Thread Thierry Carrez
By corruption I didn't mean a corrupted bits in a specific file, but
rather a corrupted state for the global /var/lib/samba directory
contents... The basis for this is that in the mentionned bugs clearing
the directory (and especially the existing secrets.tdb file) made
everything working again. Clearly the backtrace analysis is more precise
than this wild guess based on observed symptoms.

[Bug 286828] Re: Access to samba 3.0.24-3.0.25 shares using CIFS is broken on 8.10

2009-01-21 Thread mbentley
i found that when i used the msdfs root = no option on my samba 3.0.24
server running debian etch, it caused my windows clients that have
shares mapped to network drives to stop working and i couldn't access
them by \\server\share. in order to get it working on my windows xp
computers, i had to restart them and remount the network drives for it
to work but it indeed does work. i know that this really isn't the
intended purpose of this bug report, but at first i thought that
including msdfs root = no broke my shares on my windows boxes.

thank you for this workaround as i do not plan on upgrading from the
standard debian etch on my server anytime in the near future.

[Bug 296719] Re: kerberos-configs fails to configure if dnsdomainname fails

2009-01-21 Thread Russ Allbery
1.22 has been synced to jaunty, so following the process for proposing
an intrepid update:

This bug causes users who do not have a valid local hostname to fail to
install krb5-config. krb5-config is a dependency of many other packages
and recommendation for all Kerberos software packages. The fix is to
handle failure of dnsdomainname. A minimum patch is included earlier in
this bug.

TEST CASE: Change a system without krb5-config installed so that
dnsdomainname exits with an error. This can be done by ensuring that
the local hostname is not fully qualified and then breaking DNS lookups
(such as by emptying /etc/resolv.conf). Then, try installing
krb5-config.

The patch should cause no regressions. It just uses the default domain
(ATHENA.MIT.EDU) for users who don't have working DNS and who don't
answer the debconf prompt for their Kerberos realm.

Please note: I personally won't have time to prepare and upload the
package for Ubuntu intrepid. I only watch Ubuntu bug reports because
I'm one of the maintainers of the corresponding Debian package.

[Bug 292791] Re: silent login/gdm failures and sudo segfaults with smbpasswd enabled

2009-01-21 Thread Steve Langasek
The missing /var/lib/samba dir bug, bug #260687, is purported to be
fixed in version 2:3.2.3-1ubuntu3 - earlier than the version Jorrit
reports is installed.

Walter and Martin, can you tell me whether you have a /var/lib/samba
directory on your affected systems?

Jorrit, you showed a test involving 'mv /var/lib/samba/
/var/lib/samba.bak/' - did you have a /var/lib/samba directory on your
system when the original crash happened that you were reporting?

The pam_smbpass module unfortunately explicitly disables the normal
Samba logging, which would have generated a more meaningful error
message in a logfile if it were enabled. If we can first confirm that
everyone's symptoms are the same, then if everyone can tell me which
versions of libpam-smbpass they have installed I can provide a package
build that turns on logging for pam_smbpass so we can see what Samba
itself /says/ the problem is.

[Bug 292791] Re: silent login/gdm failures and sudo segfaults with smbpasswd enabled

2009-01-21 Thread Thierry Carrez
Steve: the fix in bug 260687 is making sure /var/lib/samba is created by
moving directory creation to the appropriate package. It's not solving
the segfault that happens if it's not there.

However here the problem is different, as it happens with an existing
/var/lib/samba directory. Emptying the directory usually solves it, by
forcing the re-creation of the files in it.

2009-01-21 Thread David Klasinc
Hm, a lot of people here is talking about this bug being a problem with
dual card setups. I'm having this problem with single card, dual head
setup. Two screens and xinerama. Two card setup I can't even get to
work. I'm using latest ubuntu nvidia driver and I have 8800 GTS and 7800
GT card. If I run Xorg with -config parameter where I use three screens
all works fine. But if I run xinit with the same config, then xinit will
segfault.

From: Дмитрий Ледков dmitrij.led...@gmail.com

Subject: [Bug 31] Re: python-matplotlib did not install correctly. Error
occured on ubuntu 8.10

Hello. I've installed it and it worked fine on my machine. There some
clues why it didn't work for you from these lines:

pycentral: pycentral pkginstall: not overwriting local files
pycentral pkginstall: not overwriting local files
dpkg: error processing python-matplotlib (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

Python is platform independent but it needs to be byte compiled during
installation for any/all version of python that you have installed. This
package uses pycentral - one of the methods to insure that all *.py get
byte compiled into *.pyc on user computer during installation. So
pycentral was the one who ruined your post-installtion scripts.

As we see from above pycentral emmits messages: not overwriting local
files. Hmmm to me this sounds like something is in the way of python-
matplotlib, eg. manual or old instalation.

Try purging the package, and installing again.

Also I'm attaching a list of files which should be installed (dpkg -L)
all of them are installed by pycentral one way or the other therefore
check that none of them exist. Note that if you have more pythons that I
do, you should check for all /usr/lib/pythonX.Y/site-
packages/matplotlib/ where X.Y could be any python versions that you
might have.

Please write back to me. I love matplotlib, it's best thing EVER. Hope
you will get it to work.

On the side note. Try to remember if you did anything special with your
python installation. Or what was the sequence of last apt actions before
you started this installation of python-matplotlib. Cause it could be
reproducible under the corner case sequence that you have manage to do
(purging, porting, compiling your own modules, installing anything
outside of apt authority, enabling random ppa's, using backports etc)

Hope this helps.

[Bug 284964] Re: Extended validation SSL certificates do not show green in URL bar

2009-01-21 Thread Wolfgang
I confirm that this bug seems to be a problem with my specific
installation. The SSL green bar works fine for me on other Ubuntu
installations.

However, I tried
$ firefox -safe-mode
(so disabled all add-ons) and firefox still shows no green bar.

What helps is removing the $HOME/.mozilla directory, after that firefox
shows the green SSL-EV bar again. As I seem to be the only one
experiencing the problem its fine for me if the bug is closed.

[Bug 319491] Re: Evolution Crashes When you exit a draft while it is still in process of saving which takes more than five seconds

2009-01-21 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal
with as a '.crash' file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report
a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport
in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.

If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.
I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently.
Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 153518] Re: sticky keys disarms after idle period

2009-01-21 Thread Coljep
Ankur, Your method certainly works for 8.04 on my machine. Now I do not
have to reset Sticky Keys after a reboot.

I have found that you can only change the Timeout value if you activate
Timeout, the option below. It is not required for Sticky Keys to work
and would probably be counter productive.

In 8.10 I still do not have a problem and in gconf-editor all three
stickykeys options were selected. Most confusing but at least it works
now in both versions of Ubuntu.

[Bug 319506] [NEW] Openoffice.org 3 extensions do not install correctly

2009-01-21 Thread Jonathan
Public bug reported:

I have just experienced a bug where Openoffice will install an extension
correctly, but it will not show up in the menu bar and its buttons will
not show up. I'm installing OpenCards
(http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/project/OpenCards) on a fresh
upgrade to OO.o 3.0.1 from https://launchpad.net/~openoffice-
pkgs/+archive on Ubuntu 8.10 64-bit.

I have found further info here on this problem here:
http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?thread_id=2234542forum_id=707158
http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?thread_id=2019916forum_id=707158

At first I thought it might just be a bug with OpenCards, but the more I looked
into it, the more I think other extensions are also having this problem:
http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/project/ooo2gd#comment-972

I'm not 100% sure this is a bug, but it seems like it is. I can provide
more info if needed. And to clarify, the OpenCards extension installs
correctly, but the new menu doesn't appear (even after restarting OO.o).
Installing ANY OTHER extension after OpenCards (and restarting OO.o)
will cause them both to work.

[Bug 319510] [NEW] update-manager brings itself to front

2009-01-21 Thread Alexander Bürger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

When update-manager is running, it cannot be put below other windows, it brings
itself to the front again.
It also de-iconifies itself. Therefore it is very difficult to use other
programs running in parallel.

I use the compiz window manager and 'gnome-ubuntu'.

[Bug 319508] [NEW] Liferea segmentation fault on start

2009-01-21 Thread Roshan George
Public bug reported:

Liferea crashes with a segmentation fault when started. It used to work,
but then started having trouble updating. Now, with no .liferea-1.4
directory (and hence, no database), it crashes instantly on start
(output is attached).

Versions:
Liferea 1.4.14
Ubuntu Hardy 8.04.1 x86_64, 2.6.24-23-generic
Python 2.5.2 (package version 2.5.2-2ubuntu4.1)

I have also attached the output to the command liferea --debug-all. This
is all I can manage to do. I tried installing the liferea-dbg package
and tried running gdb on the program /usr/lib/debug/usr/bin/liferea-bin

How can I provide more information?

[Bug 313715] Re: Lirc doesn't support originally IR for Terratec Cinergy T USB XXS

2009-01-21 Thread VSN
Hi,

I use Ubuntu 8.10 and have the same device Terratec Cinergy T USB XXS

I also didn't get the remote control working.

The stick itself works perfectly. It was auto initialized by Ubuntu. By
the command sudo dmesg | grep usb I got

[ 12.382840] dvb-usb: found a 'Terratec Cinergy T USB XXS' in warm state.
[ 12.382910] dvb-usb: will pass the complete MPEG2 transport stream to the
software demuxer.

[ 12.841249] dvb-usb: schedule remote query interval to 150 msecs.
[ 12.841256] dvb-usb: Terratec Cinergy T USB XXS successfully initialized and
connected.
[ 12.841564] usbcore: registered new interface driver dvb_usb_dib0700
[ 16.976828] usb-storage: device scan complete

It shows that the remote was also initilized.

The LIRC didn't support the remote. Auto-detect reported a error: No IR
Receivers Found

I have found the config file for this remote. It is attached.

I hope this problem will be fixed soon.
