[Bug 63352] Re: Creative labs X-Fi sound card unsupported

2009-07-11 Thread Susan Cragin
Go to the Ubuntu sound problems web site and follow instructions.
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=205449

If that doesn't work, try the following:

sudo apt-get --purge remove linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils alsa-source
sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-$(uname -r) module-assistant
alsa-source
sudo dpkg-reconfigure alsa-source
sudo module-assistant a-i alsa-source
reboot

[Bug 398151] [NEW] nautilus open terminal usability

2009-07-11 Thread Ingo86
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus-open-terminal

Hi,
nautilus-open-terminal is really terrible about usability for three main
reasons:

- There are no shortcuts, already reported here
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus-open-terminal/+bug/162352
Kde has it, and it's absolutely useful. I think ubuntu team should have to
search for a shortcut and add this package to the ubuntu default distribution
(not a detached package as it is now, it's too much useful opening a terminal
in the correct directory with one click).

- You have to make two clicks to open a terminal. Why it doesn't put an
icon inside the nautilus main toolbar near search? One click to open
the terminal, not more.

- Open inside the terminal is reported under Edit and under File. Why two
times? One is enough.
Thank you,
Ingo86

RE: [Bug 394556] Re: multiple running instances of update-motd cause errors

Yes, I was using the lockfile from the procmail package.

But I agree flock should work just as well. I saw both were available
and arbitrarily picked lockfile for my testing.

Thanks for your work.

Status in “update-motd” package in Ubuntu: In Progress

 Bug description:
 Binary package hint: update-motd

 Description: Ubuntu 9.04
 Release: 9.04
 update-motd:
   Installed: 1.11.1

When update-motd is executed out of /etc/cron.d, the instances are all set to
run at the same minute (if they run at all). This means that up to five
instances of update-motd can be started simultaneously. This causes two
 problems--

 1. The method used to lock out simultaneous executions is not very robust.
The $NEW file, which is used as a synchronization lock, is tested early in
the script, but not created until later. This leaves a window open for
multiple scripts to get started, and then collide with each other, ultimately
messing up the resulting message of the day. At least on my machine, this
error happens about half the time on each hour. The code to nice the
process seems to be the part that opens the window the widest. Using
lockfile to create a semaphore for synchronization corrects this flaw. I've
created a modified version of update-motd and included it as an attachment.

 2. By design, only one instance of update-motd can run at a time, and others
just exit. However, this means that some of the work scheduled for the same
minute doesn't get done (assuming the synchronization works correctly). But
this isn't really what you want--if both the 10-minute and the hourly script
are scheduled on the hour, you want both to execute serially. I can see two
 possible solutions to this:
 a) Alter the lockfile code in the attachment to allow retries. Changing -r0
to -r5 in the attached code would allow all the instances that could possibly
be scheduled to take their turns to run. The downside of this solution is
that if update-motd is run manually, it could take up to 40 seconds to fail,
when the lock is in place. Even the 8 second delay for a single retry is
likely to be confusing to the user.
 b) Alter the update-motd crontab entry in /etc/cron.d so that the instances
of update-motd don't coincide. For example, one job on the 10-minute
boundaries, one 1 minute after the hour, one 2 minutes after midnight each
day, one 3 minutes after midnight each week, one 4 minutes after midnight
each month. This change would also reduce the likelihood of multiple running
instances to the point that the current method of synchronization with the
$NEW file would rarely cause a problem.

[Bug 346246] Re: Amarok in Ubuntu 9.04 does not offer to install restricted codecs (like MP3)

2009-07-11 Thread dotancohen
Amarok is not part of the default install, Hence Not a papercut

Amarok is part of the default Kubuntu install. I suppose that means that
the One Hundred Paper Cuts project only applies to Ubuntu and not to
official derivatives such as Kubuntu?

A paper cut is a minor usability annoyance that an average user would
 encounter on
his/her first day of using a new installation of Ubuntu 9.10.

This issue fits that description, assuming Ubuntu includes Kubuntu.

Don't worry though, This bug has been marked as invalid ONLY in the
 papercuts project.

I see that, thanks.

2009-07-11 Thread dotancohen
For further info about papercuts criteria , pls read
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PaperCut

That page states:

If you prefer a more detailed, itemized definition, a paper cut is:

* A bug, or an unintended problem occurring within an existing piece of
software,
* the presence of which makes a computer more difficult or less pleasant to
use,
* that is easy to fix,
* that the average user would encounter during his/her first day of using...
* ...Ubuntu Desktop Edition* as configured by a default installation.

* Paper cuts are also found in Kubuntu!

This bug fits the entire description, including the five bullet points
mentioned. Please reconsider it's status as a papercut. Thanks.

2009-07-11 Thread Malcolm Scott
In current karmic I'm getting these warnings pop up every minute or so,

why they're popping up unreasonably frequently... if you need more info
to debug this, let me know.

Re: [Bug 217908] Re: Pixellated Images in Firefox/Opera due to incorrect EXTEND_PAD implementation in several video drivers

2009-07-11 Thread VegCyclist
Thanks for your help! This worked for me.

2009/7/11 Tom Jaeger thjae...@gmail.com

 ** Description changed:

  [Problem]
 - Scaled images in Firefox, Opera, etc. look blurred or pixelated when
 zoomed.
+ Upscaled images in Firefox (and Opera) look pixelated when zoomed, edges
 appear jagged.

  [Discussion]
This is because firefox is using nearest-neighbor interpolation for
upscaling. It would look better if bilinear filtering were used by Cairo,
which requires EXTEND_PAD. However, EXTEND_PAD is not implemented very well
in several video drivers, and Cairo is unable to distinguish drivers that
have good implementations from ones with bad ones, so it is currently using
a client-side fall back which is deemed too slow by the firefox developers.

Solving this requires updating each video driver to either implement
EXTEND_PAD correctly or at least stop advertising it can do it when it
really can't. Once this is done, cairo's client-side workaround can be
removed and firefox can be updated to use EXTEND_PAD.

  [Original Report]
With Ubuntu Hardy beta + latest updates (15th April 2008) I suffer from
bad image rendering quality in Firefox.
To see the type of problem just open the attached screenshot and scale to
 100%.

The images that are blurred are razor sharp if I do aright click -
view image so it is perhaps a problem related to
  image scaling.

The problem appears only with my laptop - so perhaps it is not a bug in
 Firefox but elsewhere (X-windows??/intel-driver??).
The laptop has a 3-year old Centrino-Platform uses 915 intel driver and
has a lcd monitor with 1400x1050 resolution.

The rendering problem appears independent of the Desktop-Effects are
on/off. So it does not seem to be a problem with
  compiz.

p.s. Also the text in the Gnome-terminal is somewhat blurred (compared
 with e.g. text in Gedit)
p.s. The same homepage renders nicely on my desktop computer with a
 1280x1045 and the ati-driver.

Don't hesitate to ask for more information.

 Bug description:
 [Problem]
Upscaled images in Firefox (and Opera) look pixelated when zoomed, edges
 appear jagged.

[Bug 398157] [NEW] Feature request: option to change the local display name of a folder without renaming the folder on a server

2009-07-11 Thread lol
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Unless I missed something, it is currently not possible to change the
display name of an IMAP folder without renaming the folder on the
server. But IMHO, this is an increasingly important feature.

The rational behind this request is more or less the same than for the
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=206061: interoperability.

More and more people need to be able to check their emails from
different computers, and the use of webmail is becoming wide-spread. But
those interfaces don't let you the choice of how to name the main
folders (inbox, sent, trash, etc.).

For example, with my ISP I have:
- INBOX
- DRAFT
- OUTBOX
- QUARANTINE
- TRASH
and I would like to see:
- Inbox
- Draft
- Sent
- Junk
- Trash
but renaming the folders breaks the webmail interface. The issue is even more
annoying when you want to set up a system in a different language... Beside the
fact that upper-case names are ugly, I don't think that my grand-mother should
have to learn what OUTBOX and QUARANTINE mean in French!

It would be great if it was possible to change the display name in the
properties of the folder. This would allow Evolution to play nicely with
other clients, and specially webmail interfaces, on which we have very
little control (that and an official alternative to the trash and junk
vfolders would be much appreciated).

[Bug 357368] Re: Evolution duplicates my e-mails when on Imap

2009-07-11 Thread Hélio Nunes
To better describe: it duplicate all headers on the imap folder when I
receive new email (automatic check). I think it occurs more often if I
already have unread emails on the folder... I think it only occurs on
the folder selected when automatic check begins... It is really
annoying: after the header duplication, if I select the first one
(always the first), I receive a fetch error. If I close evolution and rm
all folders.db I get the right headers until next check.

I will fill the upstream bug, but I may need some help.

My comments: definitely a window manager issue, although maybe some
games could provide hints to the WM. The concept of centered doesn't
even make sense in some environments (tiled awesome, ion2, ion3, etc.).
If a game does try to position itself centrally, it would no doubt
suffer from many bugs relating to what centre means in multi-screen
environments, etc.

[Bug 331699] Re: Realtek RTL8111/8169 LAN (r8169) falls back from Gigabit to 100Mb/s after waking up from Suspend(S3)

2009-07-11 Thread Anders Aagaard
After running
ethtool -s eth0 speed 1000
I get the same output as kede, but copying over the network shows it's still
limited to 100mbit.

I've also seen the problem stay between reboots, however shutting down
the computer completely (coldboot rather than hot boot) will reset it.

[Bug 398163] [NEW] amarok crashes when trying to open .pls-url as stream

2009-07-11 Thread brndhf
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: amarok

I pasted the url of an .pls-file into the Add-Stream dialog and amarok
immediately crashes. This was the url:
http://www.dradio.de/streaming/dradio_ogg.pls . I know that an .pls is
not a stream, but amarok needs to validate the given url before opening
it. I tried again, and now amarok didn't crash immediately but refused
to play any track and crashed when I closed it.

ProblemType: Bug

Ok...It should not be too hard to get this fix into jaunty. I made a

installer from being started for files which are not audio-only.
Accordingly nominating the bug for jaunty and subscribing the sponsors

[Bug 193637] Re: Change spell checker language

2009-07-11 Thread Žygimantas Beručka
Hey, is there any chance to get this fixed? And why it is marked as a
wishlist? Firefox's Gecko has a feature to set a spellchecker's
dictionary (i.e. to change spellchecker.dictionary from en-US to e.g.
lt_LT in about:config) and which doesn't work in Epiphany for
particular. It's certainly not a wishlist, no any additional features
are requested.

[Bug 398162] [NEW] Nvdia proprietary drivers crash X randomly on T61

2009-07-11 Thread Andy Stanford-Clark
Public bug reported:

Using Nvidia version 177 proprietary drivers on Lenovo T61 ThinkPad with
Intrepid.

From time to time, seems like after a few minutes not being used, then
press a key or move mouse (just seems like that, might be a red
herring!), screen goes black, and a text screen appears with stack trace
information (attached as photo).

X then reboots in some weird lo-res mode and offers a menu of how to
reconfigure / carry on.

Note I'm not using the 180 (most recent) Nvidia drivers, as they don't
work with resume from suspend.

ubuntu-bug -p linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24 says linux-restricted-

[Bug 398052] Re: update manager fails to group packages

2009-07-11 Thread Lightbreeze
Rest assured when you sleep at night, the design team is well aware of these
issues :-)
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/AppCenter#October%202009 is being developed for Ubuntu
9.10 Karmic Koala.

A 'paper cut' is a minor usability problem likely to effect the average
user first day using a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.10. This is not a
'paper cut' because the list of packages will likely be hidden in Ubuntu
9.10.

Don't worry, though, this is a valid issue, just not a 'paper cut'.
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug!

[Bug 398166] [NEW] icon for switch users or shutdown changes

2009-07-11 Thread Andy Stanford-Clark
Public bug reported:

The icon for switch users or shutdown (fusa applet) in Intrepid should
show a consistent icon - the red and white on off switch.

Sometimes it's a green circle, sometimes it's a red triangle.

When I want to shutdown or restart my computer, I should be able to
quickly spot the icon to do this, not have to make a mapping in my mind
of ah, yes, green circle means restart, at the moment, or red triangle
means restart at the moment, or sometimes, it's the familiar on/off
switch icon.

The icon should stay the same so it is easy to find. This is a usability
defect.

[Bug 343707] Re: Rhythmbox tries to find a codec for a m3u/html file

2009-07-11 Thread Martin Mai
Note for the sponsors:
I was suffering from the bug when trying it with the file the reporter
provided. After applying the patch, the annoying plugin installer has gone (of
course only for files that are not audio-only)

The diff is about 2500 lines and seems to do very much, but there are
only changes in the metadata folder and something of the code was
moved to rhythmdb/rhythmdb.c.

Given that the patch fixes something very annoying and penetrating that
disturb the user experience, I think it qualifies for SRU.

Wlan0 is the BCM4309 card - it seems to start up, the LED lights up,
dmesg shows that the radio has been activated, but it doesn't show any
of the many networks around here. (The second card is a Netgear WG111v3
stick - it finds them all, but only shows my network as soon as I
connect to it.) The BCM4309 has been working flawlessly so far under
gentoo with a kernel from the kernel.org sources.

[Bug 398172] [NEW] compiz utterly slow after resume (intel integrated)

2009-07-11 Thread sibidiba
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Compiz works on my Lenovo R61i with acceptable speeds. However, after
resuming from suspend, it becomes utterly unresponsive. Even an expose
or alt+tab takes up to seconds to show, desktop effects must be disabled
as a result. Desktop applications are not affected, only compiz effects.

Architecture: i386
Distribution: current Jaunty
Uname: 2.6.28-13-generic
Intel Driver: 2:2.6.3-0ubuntu9.4

OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) 965GM GEM 20090326 2009Q1 RC2

the text console is necessary after resume to switch on the monitor
signal.

[Bug 395956] Re: Some Japanese tags appear like question marks, others don't appear at all

2009-07-11 Thread jchronakis
I am confirming the bug, I had the same behaviour:

Ubuntu 9.04
amarok packages from: Unsupported updates (Jaunty backports)
* amarok 2:2.1.1mysql5.1.30-0ubuntu1~jaunty1
*amarok-common 2:2.1.1mysql5.1.30-0ubuntu1~jaunty1

Enabling the unsupported updates (Jaunty backports) caused Amarok to
upgrade in version 2.1.1.

After the upgrade, more than half of the non latin strings are replaced
with question marks. I cannot understand the pattern, the change seems
random. All files in the collection have been processed with EasyTAG
before importing and they tags were UTF8. The question marks can be seen
in every view (e.g. collection, playlist) and in the Edit track
details context menu.

Further examination showed that this is issue of the amarok database and not
the ID3 tags themselves. The tags are perfectly OK (unless you try to edit and
save the details of a track).
Opening the amarok database with mysql (*) shows that all non latin characters
are indeed replaced by question marks in the varchar columns.

Rescanning the collection had no effect.
Using the perl MP3::Mplib to set the UTF8 header on the tag as suggested by the
amarok FAQ, had no effect too.

Reverting back to the 2.1 version from the launchpad kubuntu ppa
(http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/backports) and rescanning the
collection solves the problem but seems to create a different problem:

I found at least one track that was in my playlist during rescanning to
now show under a different album of a different artist. Maybe this is a
bug and collection should never be rescanned with tracks in the
playlist.

After repetitive scans the track now shows under the wrong artist/album.
This is not as worrying as the fact that I am not sure how many other
errors there could be.

it is just the ant task of fop that needs ant/ant-optional.

** Changed in: fop (Ubuntu)
   Status: Triaged = Invalid

[Bug 280395] Re: Synaptics quick search and search button conflict

2009-07-11 Thread mac_v
Thank you for bringing this bug to our attention. Unfortunately a paper
cut should be a small usability issue that affects many people and is
quick and easy to fix. I'm afraid this bug can't be addressed as part of
this project.

Synaptic is being replaced by AppCentre in 9.10 , Hence not a papercut issue.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/AppCenter
A paper cut is a minor usability annoyance that an average user would encounter
on his/her first day of using a new installation of Ubuntu 9.10.

For further info about papercuts criteria , pls read
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PaperCut

Don't worry though, This bug has been marked as invalid ONLY in the
papercuts project.

[Bug 116256] Re: OpenVPN lacks support for --tls-remote option

2009-07-11 Thread Michael Helmling
May I ask why there is no progress of this bug? As far as I can see
there is a patch available for two years now ... I really need this
feature to connect to my university network!
