[Bug 441962] Re: zenmap: inconsistency between suggested package and method used for su-to-root/gksu

2009-12-28 Thread zxalexis
changed manually in /usr/share/applications/zenmap-root.desktop to this:

TryExec=gksudo zenmap
Exec=gksudo zenmap %F

and all works fine.
maybe this package needs replacing .desktop files for using gksudo (it is
present in all *buntu spins and mixes)

[Bug 458637] Re: samba client unable to access Windows 7 shares

2009-12-28 Thread Archimedes Trajano
I seem to get the problem the other way, but I am using Samba on the WD
My Book World Edition II using the optware package samba-3.2.15-1. I
can see the list of shares, but I cannot access them, I can access the
shares using my Mac though.

Removing the Live Assistant fixed the problem for me as well. However,
the problem was not there using the stock Samba which was running
version 3.0. So there could be something between 3.0 and 3.2 of Samba
that would cause the problem.

[Bug 500963] [NEW] tulip_stop_rxtx() failed on quad tulip card ZX346Q

2009-12-28 Thread Andrew Pam
Public bug reported:

I have a ZNYX ZX346Q quad-ethernet card with 4x21143-PD tulip chips,
information and drivers here:

http://www.znyx.com/products/hardware/zx340q.htm

The card does not work under Ubuntu Jaunty and Karmic, generating the
following error on any attempt to use any of the interfaces on the card:

:06:04.0: tulip_stop_rxtx() failed (CSR5 0xf066 CSR6 0xb3862002)

Booting with acpi=off or pci=routeirq do not help.

Relevant output from dmesg:

[Bug 500965] [NEW] No scroll of upper text panel

2009-12-28 Thread cheffe
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tipptrainer

If I type a text in a lesson the text won't automatically scroll down.
The cursor of the current position to type moves out of the visible
area. I have to scroll manually. This happens for the y axis. The same
happens for the x axis if I increase the font size so that lessons don't
fit in the window horizontally.

[Bug 500786] Re: regression: /etc/gdm/custom.conf messed up

2009-12-28 Thread Didier Roche
Just a short notice to sum up that it's ash and not bash that is used in
casper phases.

casper (1.209) UNRELEASED; urgency=low

  * scripts/casper-bottom/15autologin: use echo -e to enable \n
interpretation (/bin/sh is ash and not dash in casper) (LP: #500786)

[Bug 460944] Re: Update Site list is empty in Install New Software

2009-12-28 Thread Craig

I ran into the same problem with two installation methods.

1 - Installed the apt-get
2 - Installed by downloading the Eclipse IDE EE for Java Developers from the
eclipse site.

In both cases I found that the list displayed the first time I started
eclipse - but not on subsequent attempts.

The problem was solved by resizing the window (smaller - not larger).
(Using Ubunut 9.10)

I havent marked this bug wont fix without putting considerable thought or
effort.

Bug 463802 was filed only after discussion with Rodney Dawes [fdo specs
maintainer] , and he also agreed that the descriptions could be clearer.
He mentioned it would be updated soon , even if Rodney fixes the description ,
the apps which misuse the icon far outnumber the apps which use the icon
correctly.

I'v tried to look into the usage of the delete icon in several apps and
considered filing bugs in each of the concerned apps... but the number
of apps misusing the icon are too many.

That was when i noticed the gnome-icon-theme also using the same icon.
When i asked the concerned devs , they mentioned that they considered
using a shredder but gave up since the problem was too wide spread.
Instead have used an icon similar to the humanity icon.

I'v given up on this issue and considered leaving the icon as is. Since
, even if the humanity icon is removed , the gnome-icon-theme fallback
is gonna use a similar icon.

If this is a huge problem , I could just remove the humanity icon and folks can
deal with upstream gnome and the apps directly.
I'v spent way too much time on this issue already :(

IMO, it is easier fixing the apps which use the icon correctly , since
they are just a few apps.

You can check the gnome-icon at:
http://git.gnome.org/browse/gnome-icon-theme/tree/gnome
http://people.freedesktop.org/~jimmac/icons/#git

[Bug 140860] Re: Maximised windows extend below panels when using dual monitors

2009-12-28 Thread Voy
Not sure what kind of fix has been released for this, but I seem to be
affected with a very similar problem. When I maximize a window on my
laptop screen, this window extends below both both the upper and lower
taskbar. My system is a thinkpad x300 and ubuntu version 9.10.

[Bug 455779] Re: SB Audigy: Bad audio quality when told to use all 5.1 channels

2009-12-28 Thread Steve Kieu
I for one, never see PA works in any of Ubuntu version and it is quite
bad that it is still in Karmic. Removing it, no sound volume control,
sound record (gnome) no longer works, but I still have to do that to
avoid my ears being damaged.

Is there any other replacement? or Just plain alsa (why we ever need PA
anyway? alsa allow me to play from multiple applications already) Why
Ubuntu designs the PA (given bad quality and high CPU usage) to the
default sound system and still, Ubuntu does not listen the voice of such
users like us?

[Bug 500968] [NEW] Candidate release devscripts_2.10.59ubuntu1

2009-12-28 Thread Ahmed El-Mahmoudy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: devscripts

devscripts (2.10.59ubuntu1) lucid; urgency=low

  * Resynchronise with Debian. Remaining changes:
- Drop universe packages from Recommends to Suggests:
+ libcrypt-ssleay-perl: only needed for a corner case (uscan on SSL
download sites), wasn't installed by default in previous releases
either, and seems quite dead upstream
+ libsoap-lite-perl: only needed for one less common command (select)
for bts, which isn't useful for Ubuntu itself, and pulls in a lot of
other universe Perl libraries
+ debian-{keyring,maintainers}: not useful enough in Ubuntu
+ equivs: too much of a hack to install by default
  + libyaml-syck-perl: transition-check is fairly Debian-specific
- scripts/debchange.pl:
+ Adjust --security template for Ubuntu.
+ Add -U/--upstream flag that forces original just increment
the end behaviour; Ubuntu is upstream for some pieces of software.
  + Add --distributor= to override lsb_release output.
+ Default to lucid as distribution.
+ Add ubuntu1 to version string for new versions, with tweaks for
special cases.
  + Add -R/--rebuild flag for Ubuntu's no-change rebuilds.
+ Don't use the last distribution in debian/changelog when doing
dch -r on Ubuntu. Just because it was last uploaded to jaunty
doesn't mean that's the right thing to do now. Thanks to Colin
Watson. (LP: #429288)
- scripts/debsign.{sh,1}: Implement DEBSIGN_ALWAYS_RESIGN variable to skip
the Would you like to use the current signature? question. (Debian
  #447955)
- scripts/debuild.pl: Enforce Ubuntu merge policy.
- scripts/dscverify.pl: Add Ubuntu keyrings.
- scripts/rmadison.pl: Change default URL parameter to ubuntu.
- scripts/uupdate.{sh,1}: Use -0ubuntu1 default revision on Ubuntu.
- Add test/debchange.pl, test/Makefile: debchange test suite; call it
during build in debian/rules. Also add lsb-release build dependency for
this, so that debchange uses Ubuntu mode.

[Bug 492990] Re: USB wireless adaptor (AW-NU221) recognises connection but will not connect in 9.10 - all ok in 9.04

2009-12-28 Thread SuperEngineer
Workaround discussed in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/460323 has provided
a fix for now but ... this issue is still a bug for correction prior to
next release to maintain Ubuntu's good reputation.

workaround details...

Fixed with:

Step1: add blacklist rt2800usb to:
   /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
Step2: add rt2870sta to:
   /etc/modules
Step3: Reboot.

Connectivity now working as per Jaunty.

RE: [Bug 483090] Re: Panel Application crash often in start up, it works 1 time on 5 after a lot of restart. The pc is a acer laptop and with 9.4 works

2009-12-28 Thread Angelo

Hi, I've found problems during the startup of the system, after the login,
during the initialization of the application panel, it block everything without
reason.
It's happened the first time during the upgrade from ver. 8.10 to 9.04 .
I've found the bug in the meteo applet (the gadget to see the the weather in a
specified location), a simple applet site on top right of control panel.
One time disabled, the system starts to work perfectly.
I suppose the problem still in the connection delay. In fact at startup, the
system asks me the password for the wifi connection, but the applet needs to
connect before to end the startup of the applet bar.
That's all.
Angelo.

Could you please provide the information requested in comment 2? It
isn't really all that clear what the actual problem is that you're
describing. You seem to have diagnosed the problem to a specific applet,
without really describing what problem you're actually experiencing.

Re: [Bug 473425] Re: Kernel panic and system crashes while using office (00 3.1) and shoes a black screen

2009-12-28 Thread zack
I don't think it is reproducible, although it happens to me at least twice a
week. Sometimes it seems to happen when the computer is working hard, but
sometimes when the computer does almost nothing. It happens a lot when I use
Open Office.
If it can help, my computer is an inspiron 1525 laptop.

2009/12/27 Michael Nagel ubu...@nailor.devzero.de

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Please answer these questions:

 * Is this reproducible?
 * If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug?

This will help us to find and resolve the problem.

 Very important.

Today I was working on my laptop with oo 3.1 (ubuntu 9.10) when suddenly
the screen blacked out and some lines were on it, didn't have time to write

I think this can be marked fixed as it is included in Lucid, you will
need to add kubuntu backports as affects if you would like to have
it backported to previous versions. For now it can also be used from the
PPA as unofficial build.

[Bug 454747] Re: NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth0 (via-rhine): transmit queue 0 timed out

2009-12-28 Thread besson3c
Yeah, I never once had this problem under 2.6.28 in 9.04 either. I guess
this is a combination of 9.10 and any kernel?

The only possible explanation to this is whether any kernel modules
might be causing this problem? I'm a little unclear as to how it is that
you can select an older kernel module via the standard Grub menu without
having to rebuild the modules necessary for the selected kernel. If
kernel modules are completely irrelevant here, I guess this is
irrelevant?

 These are three bug reports.

 1. The keyboard indicator applet should be configured to be activated
through installation, when the installer is about to setup more than one
 keyboard layouts.

 2. This is also an upstream issue, and we should link to a bug report in
bugzilla.gnome.org, under Product: gnome-applets, Component: keyboard
indicator Either an existing report on this issue, or a new bug report.
The rational here is that we want any action that adds a second (or more)
keyboard layouts, should trigger the keyboard indicator to show up on the
 task bar.

 3. When you install Ubuntu 9.10 with Greek support, the default layouts
are us,gr and gr. This is messy and should be fixed. The user
iterates between us, gr, gr when switching layouts, which obviously is
 messy.

NB: When you install Linux with Greek keyboard layouts, you select the
Greek layout instead of Greek Extended. We do not use Greek Extended
anymore. Greek is now a superset of Greek Extended. Thus, when you
install Ubuntu Linux, you do not change the default during the Keyboard
 layout step.
We tell everyone to make installations with the Greek keyboard layout.

[Bug 500973] [NEW] Kernel panic while installing Ubuntu 9.10

2009-12-28 Thread Andreas Forster
Public bug reported:

When installing Ubuntu 9.10 on my Gericom Blockbuster Notebook (mobile
AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2400+ @ 1794MHz, 512 KB Cache), the installer freezes
after some time. Assuming that it is a kernel panic, I tried to switch
to the console immediately, so I solved to make a screen picture. Please
see the attached file.

[Bug 500863] Re: Problem when copying folders with Nautilus using WebDAV

2009-12-28 Thread A. Walton
Thanks for your concern. It would be helpful if you opened a bug on
bugzilla.gnome.org on the gvfs product with the webdav component and
give as explicit instructions as possible on how to reproduce this bug
so that we can see what code is wrong and if we can fix it. Thanks in
advance.

[Bug 500977] [NEW] gnome-appearance-properties new themes not displaying on sudo apps

2009-12-28 Thread Roch Delsalle
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome

When you add a new theme with gnome-appearance-properties, it's not taken into
account by the apps you run as root.
It would be better if the root user had access to every users's themes by
default.

To fix it I had to make a symlink:

sudo ln -s ~/.themes /root
sudo ln -s ~/.icons /root

[Bug 324211] Re: AMD X2 CPU stuck at 1Ghz lowest speed

2009-12-28 Thread C. Brayton
Me, too, on a Latitude D620 with Duo 2 CPU (2GHz), running 9.10 Karmic
(2.6.31-17-generic).

But with a twist.

After booting, cpufreq-info shows that all is well: the ondemand
governor is managing steps between 1GHz and 2GHz, the machine is humming
along, moving to higher or lower steps as needed.

But after a certain amount of time, something (acpi-cpufreq?)
automatically changes those settings and I am stuck on the lowest
setting on both CPU 0 and CPU 1:

política atual: a frequência deveria estar entre 1000 MHz e 1000 MHz. O
governor userspace deve decidir qual velocidade usar dentro desse
limite.

(My machine speaks Portuguese, but you can see that the interval is between
1GHz and 1GHz. I changed the governor to userspace in a bid to manually set
freq to 2GHz with echo 200
/sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_cur_freq
 or cpufreq-selector -f 200)

I have seen many similar complaints in the forums.

BIOS has no settings like the ones mentioned by everflux (note #23).

I have uninstalled all cpufreq demons (kpowersave, cpudyn, cpufreqd,
powernowd).

Canonical Kernel Team, ride to the rescue!

[Bug 448095] Re: resolvconf starts after ifupdown, does not pick the dns-nameserver and dns-search lines up from /etc/network/interfaces

2009-12-28 Thread Sander van Grieken
ok, time for a full checklist :)

- update /sbin/resolvconf from bug attachment
- update /etc/resolvconf/update.d/libc from bug attachment
- install /etc/init/resolvconf.conf from bug attachment
- remove /etc/rcS.d/S07resolvconf
- make sure /etc/resolv.conf symlinks to /lib/init/rw/resolvconf/resolv.conf

vpn or tunnelling should work as good as before. Nothing has changed for
'late' connections.

debugging is a bit hard, but you can see the non-zero exit code if you
boot in rescue mode.

[Bug 461577] Re: [Karmic] Internal microphone does not record sound on a Dell Studio XPS w/ Intel 82801H HD Audio Controller

2009-12-28 Thread mabawsa
I have the same issues on an XPS M1330 laptop with a digital microphone
and a front mic on an ABIT IX38 based system. Whenever I commit to the
correct alsamixer settings they are forgotten on reboot. Brews hack
works

[Bug 21804] Re: alsa-utils cannot always restore mixer settings correctly across upgrades

2009-12-28 Thread Jan Braunisch
I'm running kubuntu karmic and sound worked well until one reboot (i
dont know if i had installed a new kernel before rebooting) when kmix
and amarok said the sound card is not present and not working (i
remember seeing both not present and not working)

r...@j:~# /etc/init.d/alsa-utils restart
 * Shutting down ALSA...

  [ OK ]
 * Setting up ALSA...

  * warning: 'alsactl restore' failed with
error message 'alsactl: set_control:1389: Cannot write control '3:0:0:EMU10K1
PCM Send Routing:0' : Operation not permitted
alsactl: set_control:1389: Cannot write control '3:0:0:EMU10K1 PCM Send
Volume:0' : Operation not permitted'...
...done.

i tried removing /var/lib/alsa/asound.state but it didn't make anything
better

lspci shows:
00:0d.0 Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB Audigy (rev 04)

it's an Audigy2, i wonder why it doesn't say

r...@j:~# uname -a

I'll try what you said Martin Pitt. Been busy over Christmas, so will

[Bug 500988] [NEW] download directory not created after installing 9.10

2009-12-28 Thread ibizatunes
Public bug reported:

If i do a clean install of 9.10 with a existing home drive, then connect
the home drive, there is not a new folder call downloads

If i do a clean install with no home drive i get a folder call
downloads,

it NOT a major issue as i can create a folder and map everything to it,
but it would be nice if it did it automatically and change the icon so
it looks better

NOT 100% sure this is the right area to report this application bug - so
apologizes in advanced
