[Bug 528991] [NEW] bad brightness behaviour on battery
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager Automatic display brightness adjustment on battery doesn't work correctly for arbitrary brightness levels. The system appears to expect the starting brightness to always be 100%, so falls down when it isn't. The following assumes 'Reduce backlight brightness', and 'Dim display when idle' are selected First off, the correct behaviour: 1. Set brightness to 100%, while plugged in, or set it while not plugged in and open the power manager 2. Unplug power or observe as power manager is opened that brightness drops to around 50% 3. Leave system idle until brightness dims further. 4. Move mouse etc to 'wake' from idle, observe brightness return to that of stage 2. 5. Plug in power, brightness returns to 100% The bad behaviour occurs when either you don't start at 100% brightness to begin with, or you change brightness manually after stage 2 above. 1. Try doing stage 1 and 2, then change the brightness manually, then open the power manager again, for me brightness drops by 50% again. 2. Set the brightness manually and then let the system go idle and dim the screen, for me the brightness will not go back up again when I 'wake' the system. [Bug 497813] Re: anacron killed immediately after resume from suspend state
Thank you for the information, Henning. I don't know the PowerDevil thing, but it seems to me that 1. /etc/acpi/power.sh calls /usr/sbin/pm-powersave. 2. pm-powersave calls run_hooks defined in /usr/lib/pm-utils/pm-functions. 3. run_hooks executes /usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/anacron with an argument of true, and it stops anacron. If arguments for pm-powersave are omitted in step 2, it determines whether the system should enter low-power operation or not according to the result of on_ac_power (line 47 in /usr/sbin/pm-powersave). So I modified the script of on_ac_power so that it always returns 0. When I rebooted afterward, anacron started normally, without aborting. Therefore, in my case, the problem is not in anacron or init (maybe), but in the fact that my system cannot recognize that it actually runs on AC power. # BTW, I've got used to starting anacron manually... -- anacron killed immediately after resume from suspend state https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/497813 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 22007] Re: no 'Settings' button in gnome-screensaver
Modern monitors don't suffer burn, and nearly all computer monitors are green and set to automatically power down anyway, so perhaps the screen saver should be removed completely (other than the stub that shuts off power) In these times, screen savers are no more than a passive game, they serve no useful or needed function. If the developers will affirm their automobiles came from the dealer with all the radio stations preset and cannot be changed, I will accept that the screen savers not be non configurable. I would prefer no radio to preset stations. If the developers will affirm that the web browser they use came with preset favorites that cannot be changed, then I will accept that the screen savers not be configurable. I would prefer no favorites to unchangeable ones. If the developers will affirm that in the next release of Ubuntu, all the games will have fixed options, and can only be played in one way, then I will accept that the screen savers not be configurable. I would prefer...you get the drift. If the developers of Ubuntu will lock down the directory tree so that users cannot create any new sub-directories, then I will accept that the screen savers not be configurable. If the developers of ubuntu wish to position Ubuntu as a serious business operating system, they must eliminate all games from the installation, and remove all installable games packages. As long as games are included and others can easily be installed, then configuration for screensavers should be available. The screensaver is no different than a game. Note that if configurability has to be installed as an add-on package, business don't allow users to install software, so it will be non-configurable to them. [Bug 528995] [NEW] [intel] On invocation of lshw -c memory, X colours mess up
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg When I invoke sudo lshw -c memory, X gets pixelated, noisy and very, very colourful (pink and green mostly, text becomes mostly illegible, but shapes can still be seen). All it takes to fix this is to tab to a tty, then back to gdm with C-A-Fx. I've also attached the output of intel_gpu_dump before and after running lshw -c memory, as per penguin42's request in #ubuntu+1. Eric D, thanks for your reply. Unfortunately I suppose it is not enough. Even if I remove that notification the computer will Suspend, Hybernate or Turn OFF. [Bug 527648] Re: Running instances can't be contacted from CLC in CLC+Walrus / CC+SC / NC topology
Aha, I think I understand why ... During the CLC install, I think the user is prompted for eucalyptus /cloud-address (if it exists), and if the user leaves it blank (and none is detected on the network), then the installer suggests installing this machine as the CLC. Hence, eucalyptus/cloud-address remains blank. So I just think we need to determine that address in a different manner. I'll take another look. ** Changed in: eucalyptus (Ubuntu Lucid) Assignee: Colin Watson (cjwatson) = Dustin Kirkland (kirkland) -- Running instances can't be contacted from CLC in CLC+Walrus / CC+SC / NC topology https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/527648 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I used the killall soffice.bin command about eight times, and then finally the last time pdfimport, filter-binfilter and the third program that wouldn't install ran and terminated normally. Synaptic now reports no more broken packages, and things are back to normal Thank you for that tip. the other commands that I tried in this post didn't work, but this one did. [Bug 529005] [NEW] Side pane does not revert to default size when selecting View - Reset View to Defaults
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nautilus Selecting the menu item View - Reset View to Defaults does not reset the side pane to its default width. One of the use cases for users to select the View - Reset View to Defaults menu options is to get back to a known state when they have accidentally changed something and don't know how to revert the change, one of those examples being to accidentally set the width of the side pane to zero. Steps to reproduce: 1. Make sure the side pane is visible 2. Set the width of the side pane to 0 or disable the side pane by pressing F9 3. Select View - Reset View to Defaults Expected behaviour The side pane re-appears at it default width Actual behaviour The side pane is unchanged: if it's hidden it stays hidden, if it has 0 width, it stays at 0 width. Dear Jean-Baptiste, I went to the but report you mentioned, read through and methodically went through each suggested corrective measure. Nothing changed. Finally, I got to the suggestion to use killall soffice.bin which I did with sudo, and it took six more tries, but then it finally went through, ran the install of the final three programs which were pdfimport, emailmerge and filter-binfilter (which was the one giving the error message each time, that OO was running) and everything installed, updated and terminated normally. [Bug 454301] Re: warning given about disk health due to smart not being enabled
Ok, I figured there had to be a simple work-around. There is! Create a swap file and use that instead of a swap partition. This will drastically reduce the number of unnecessary writes that your (irreplaceable) internal SD has to experience (especially if you have 0.5 GB of RAM). https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwapFaq What you need to do is the following: 1. Disable your swap partition or re-install Ubuntu Redux 9.10 without the swap partition. 2. Use a USB memory key or an SDHD/SD card that you leave in the card reader and create on that solid state device the swap-file. You can also do some other tweaks to reduce the number of writes that take place. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EeePC/Using#Reducing%20Drive%20Writes for details. Caveat re swap-file vs. swap partition: I'm guessing that this method will force extra steps on you whenever you want to access other SD cards in the card reader. You will have to turn OFF your computer and remove the card before turning it on (I'm sure there's a way for you to turn off the swap-file interactively but I'll leave that up to the experts to do). You'll obviously be running a system without a swap (virtual memory) at that point so you'll be limited to the 0.5 GB or 1 GB of your Eee PC/netbook but at least you'll be able to access the files on another SD card. Once you're done, simply turn off the computer and insert your swap SD card. -- warning given about disk health due to smart not being enabled https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/454301 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 529011] [NEW] Ruby 1.9.1 leaks memory in Lucid on AMD64
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: ruby1.9.1 I reported this, originally at #514322 I've put in another report as this affects Lucid as well as Karmic. This bug only seems to affect AMD64 platforms. The latest SVN trunk of Ruby 1.9 has been fixed for the last few weeks since it was marked as fixed at http://redmine.ruby- lang.org/issues/show/1392 A simple test case for this is under AMD64: ./ruby -e 'loop { Class.new.__send__ :include, Module.new }' ./ruby -e 'loop { Module.new.extend Module.new }' Running the above will leak memory. This is easy to see through any process listing application, such as top, or GNOME task manager. This will happen until the system runs out of memory, or the offending Ruby process is killed. Given that most people using Ruby 1.9.x will be Rails developers using Rails in development (debug) mode who wish to migrate their code base from 1.8.x so it's compatible with 1.9.x, I would guess that it is in the interest in the Ruby Rails community to utilize the latest 1.9.x branch were possible. Also, given that in the Ruby community that Ruby 1.9 is known to be a moving target, developers will want to test against the latest version (compared to 1.8.x which is supposed to fairly static and thus considered stable). Will it be asking too much to do this, (as I'm guessing the packages are pulled upstream from Debian, I'm guessing this will need to be passed on to Debian maintainers?) ** Affects: ruby1.9.1 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Ruby 1.9.1 leaks memory in Lucid on AMD64 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/529011 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

It's not a very scientific test, but it does also lead me to wonder why doesn't it work right in Ubuntu? If any additional info is needed on my part, I'll do my best to provide. -- Sound problems. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/512612 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 529023] [NEW] F-spot uses only one CPU core for CPU-intensive tasks
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: f-spot When I perform highly CPU-intensive tasks in F-spot, notably Merge Raw, the process seems to make use of only one of the four CPU cores in my machine. The process reports 100% (or close to) CPU usage, but looking at resource usage in Gnome System Monitor reveals that only one core is being used maximally, while the other three are close to idle.
