Re: [Bug 781088] Re: Time is not syncronized with NTP-server
Hi Clint, I appreciate, that a lot of the work going on around Ubuntu, is voluntary non-paid time, and I DO appreciate, that heroic endeavor; cause otherwise, I could only fall back to the ridiculously bug-ridden MS Windows... But I would recommend that a person having authority to and taking upon himself to close a bug-report (as invalid), at least had read the bug-report, before closing the case : I reported, that my completely raw (i.e. non-update) 11.4 Ubuntu did not adjust the clock correctly. As this had not been a problem in all the earlier versions of Ubuntu (and I have run them all), I was sure, that the nice Ubuntu-peoples would like to know. Therefore I tried to experiment a little, amongst which removing the NTP-daemon, before reporting the bug. This IS a current bug, the clock is NOT adjusted correctly after having installed 11.4 on an Acer Aspire one. In my opinion its an flawed thinking, to remove the possibility under settings to configure, which NTP-servers should be contacted to adjust the clock. Please reopen this bug regards gerti Excerpts from gerti's message of Fri May 20 19:54:59 UTC 2011: Hi Clint, thanks for your answer. Yes the 4 NTP-servers, you cite, IF you install the NTP-daemon. But as it didn't work, I removed the NTP-daemon again. I shouldn't need the NTP-daemon, as I don't want to run a NTP-service for other machines om my network. As of this moment grep pool /etc/ntp.conf yields # Use public servers from the pool.ntp.org project. # Please consider joining the pool (http://www.pool.ntp.org/join.html). server dk.pool.ntp.org iburst server pool.ntp.org iburst I assume because I have run the ntpdate with these NTP-servers (several times). and running ls -l /etc/rc?.d/*ntp* yields ls: cannot access /etc/rc?.d/*ntp*: No such file or directory again, presumably, because I removed the (for me) useless NTP-daemon. Gerti, thanks for the reply! I think quite a few users find the ntp daemon quite useless, which is why it gets installed by default. If you want to configure things differently from the default, that is your prerogative. I suggest you add a file to /etc/cron.daily that runs ntpdate to sync daily, or if you want to do it more often, write a crontab entry that handles it the way you want it handled. [Bug 786250] [NEW] Remove dependency on perl-suid for Perl 5.12
*** This bug is a security vulnerability *** Public security bug reported: Binary package hint: backuppc The 5.12 release of Perl removes the suidperl binary, and therefore the perl_5.12.3-6ubuntu4 package no longer includes the perl-suid package. Oneiric will be migrating to Perl 5.12, and so all packages that depend on perl-suid must be updated to remove the dependency. The Perl 5 Porters (upstream core developers of Perl) recommend two alternative solutions to suidperl: sudo or a small C wrapper. BackupPC uses suidperl for a CGI script, which means it's not possible to substitute sudo. Fedora has applied a patch to use a C wrapper around the CGI script (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=611009), and a similar patch has been submitted for Debian but not yet applied (http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=581950). I'll submit a branch of lp:ubuntu/backuppc applying this patch to the Ubuntu package. I'm requesting review of this solution by the Security Team, since it involves escalating privileges through a CGI script. ** Affects: backuppc (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: backuppc (Debian) Importance: Unknown Status: Unknown ** Affects: backuppc (Fedora) Importance: Unknown Status: Unknown ** Tags: oneiric perl-5.12-transition ** Bug watch added: Debian Bug tracker #581950 http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=581950 ** Also affects: backuppc (Debian) via http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=581950 Importance: Unknown Status: Unknown ** Bug watch added: Red Hat Bugzilla #611009 https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=611009 ** Also affects: backuppc (Fedora) via https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=611009 Importance: Unknown Status: Unknown ** Visibility changed to: Public -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to backuppc in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/786250 Title: Remove dependency on perl-suid for Perl 5.12 -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 784421] Re: natty slow boot on pandaboard(rev A1)
It is the creating of 512MB SWAP.swap which consumes about extra 2min. The boot time is decreased a lot once I commented the line below in /etc/fstab: /SWAP.swapnone swapsw 0 0 The swap file to be created is 512M bytes, so takes long time since the rootfs is over mmc card, which is very slow compared with HD. Also I find the below is done before appearance of the first UI: - network manager - ntp - pulseaudio -... which above may be put after the 1st UI, so that boot time can be decreased some. thanks, -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/784421 Title: natty slow boot on pandaboard(rev A1) -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [Bug 472522] Re: Deskpro EN p733 when ubuntu changes screen resolution from 1280*1024 it seems OK but screen is scrambled at reboot
On 20/11/2010 20:13, Bryce Harrington wrote: The problem appears to be something wrong with the EDID information supplied by the monitor. You can see that xrandr reports your monitor as having dimensions of 0x0mm which obviously is wrong. Elsewhere it lists it as 300 x 225 mm, but presumably this is enough to confuse it. Note that these days resolution selection is done in the kernel, not by X. In fact 'xrandr' is just a simple command line tool that sends the resolution switching commands through X to the kernel, it doesn't actually perform the mode switches itself - this is done by kernel mode selection (KMS). I'll refile the bug against the kernel. ** Description changed: The system (Deskpro EN p733) is connected to a Philips 107B monitor. When I try to change the resolution, ubuntu does not recognise the display type, but it does offer several resolution variants. If I select 1024*768 (which suits my old eyes much better than the original) everything works fine - until I reboot. Then I get a screen which seems to have versions of the display (slightly displaced) on top of each other. The computer worked fine at 1024*768 with Windows 2000. Disconcertingly if then I try one of the safe variants of login, I can eventually get in, BUT my wireless connection is lost. [Bug 655184] Re: Menus should be condensed to fit panel/overlay of appmenu
in extreme cases like Stefan's, perhaps something like if it can't show at least two menus or XXX pixels, default to only show 'More' but named something like Menu and having the whole app's menu in vertical/overflow layout... [Bug 749811] Re: [r300] Screensaver will not complete screensaver to sleep mode, PC freezes and must be hard rebooted
I've found a less than satisfactory, but acceptable solution until this bug is fixed. When I log in, the first thing I do is issue the command xset -dpms to turn off the energy star features (standby, suspend, off). This means I can now have my screensaver active and close the lid on my laptop, but the screen never turns off. [Bug 784992] Re: lottanzb segfaults every few minutes on natty
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 692635 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/692635 Thanks a lot for taking the time to report this bug. You are perfectly right. I'm experiencing these frequent crashes myself and I know how annoying they are. I've already spent quite some time trying to figure out what is done incorrectly in LottaNZB that causes these crashes in the low-level libraries. The most likely reason is that it is some sort of multi- threading issue, which is particularly hard to debug. I'll definitively try harder to fix this bug. Any help is welcome. ** This bug has been marked a duplicate of bug 692635 Frequent segmentation faults -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/784992 Title: lottanzb segfaults every few minutes on natty -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I can confirm, that removing and reloading the bcm5974 fixes the problem. [Bug 757921] Re: Oops ata link gone after resume from suspend
The laptop sill doesn't resume reliably. It works ~40% of times only. I accidently managed to take this kernel oops screnshot recently. I showed up on an external monitor. At other times, when I try to resume, the screen just stays black with a blinking cursor top-left ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid = New ** Attachment added: Photo0072.jpg https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/757921/+attachment/2137230/+files/Photo0072.jpg -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/757921 Title: Oops ata link gone after resume from suspend -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
