I feel that this should be opened as a postfix task on bug #777855 , so
we can track all of the affected packages there until the fix is applied
to eglibc. Since there is an upstream commit for the issue, it should be
easy enough to cherry pick it into our eglibc.

So, I'll mark this as a dupe, open a postfix task against 777855 that is
Confirmed, importance High.

Re: [Bug 781088] Re: Time is not syncronized with NTP-server

2011-05-21 Thread gerti
Hi Clint,

I appreciate, that a lot of the work going on around Ubuntu, is
voluntary non-paid time,
and I DO appreciate, that heroic endeavor; cause otherwise, I could
only fall back to the ridiculously bug-ridden MS Windows...
But I would recommend that a person having authority to and taking
upon himself to close a bug-report (as invalid), at least had read the
bug-report, before closing the case :

I reported, that my completely raw (i.e. non-update) 11.4 Ubuntu did
not adjust the clock correctly.
As this had not been a problem in all the earlier versions of Ubuntu
(and I have run them all), I was sure, that the nice Ubuntu-peoples
would like to know.

Therefore I tried to experiment a little, amongst which removing the
NTP-daemon,
before reporting the bug.

This IS a current bug,
the clock is NOT adjusted correctly after having installed 11.4 on an
Acer Aspire one.

In my opinion its an flawed thinking, to remove the possibility under
settings to configure, which NTP-servers should be contacted to adjust
the clock.

Please reopen this bug

regards gerti

Excerpts from gerti's message of Fri May 20 19:54:59 UTC 2011:
 Hi Clint,

 thanks for your answer.
Yes the 4 NTP-servers, you cite, IF you install the NTP-daemon.
But as it didn't work, I removed the NTP-daemon again.
 I shouldn't need the NTP-daemon, as I don't want to run a NTP-service
for other machines om my network.

 As of this moment
 grep pool /etc/ntp.conf
 yields
 # Use public servers from the pool.ntp.org project.
 # Please consider joining the pool (http://www.pool.ntp.org/join.html).
 server dk.pool.ntp.org iburst
 server pool.ntp.org iburst

I assume because I have run the ntpdate with these NTP-servers
 (several times).

 and running
 ls -l /etc/rc?.d/*ntp*
 yields
ls: cannot access /etc/rc?.d/*ntp*: No such file or directory

again, presumably, because I removed the (for me) useless NTP-daemon.

Gerti, thanks for the reply! I think quite a few users find the ntp
daemon quite useless, which is why it gets installed by default.

If you want to configure things differently from the default, that
is your prerogative. I suggest you add a file to /etc/cron.daily that
runs ntpdate to sync daily, or if you want to do it more often, write
a crontab entry that handles it the way you want it handled.

 Closing the bug as Invalid.

[Bug 786250] [NEW] Remove dependency on perl-suid for Perl 5.12

2011-05-21 Thread Allison Randal
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

Binary package hint: backuppc

The 5.12 release of Perl removes the suidperl binary, and therefore the
perl_5.12.3-6ubuntu4 package no longer includes the perl-suid package.
Oneiric will be migrating to Perl 5.12, and so all packages that depend
on perl-suid must be updated to remove the dependency.

The Perl 5 Porters (upstream core developers of Perl) recommend two
alternative solutions to suidperl: sudo or a small C wrapper. BackupPC
uses suidperl for a CGI script, which means it's not possible to
substitute sudo. Fedora has applied a patch to use a C wrapper around
the CGI script (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=611009), and
a similar patch has been submitted for Debian but not yet applied
(http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=581950). I'll submit a
branch of lp:ubuntu/backuppc applying this patch to the Ubuntu package.
I'm requesting review of this solution by the Security Team, since it
involves escalating privileges through a CGI script.

[Bug 42947] Re: postfix: fatal: /etc/postfix/postfix-script: No such file or directory

2011-05-21 Thread matze
I think this bug still exists in 10.04 LTS!
I had the problem like
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/postfix/+bug/42947/comments/12 and
the workaround from
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/postfix/+bug/42947/comments/27 worked
for me.

Is there a reason that this bug isn't fixed?

[Bug 784421] Re: natty slow boot on pandaboard(rev A1)

2011-05-21 Thread Ming Lei
It is the creating of 512MB SWAP.swap which consumes about extra 2min. The boot
time is decreased a lot
once I commented the line below in /etc/fstab:

  /SWAP.swapnone swapsw 0 0

The swap file to be created is 512M bytes, so takes long time since the rootfs
is over mmc card, which is
very slow compared with HD.

Also I find the below is done before appearance of the first UI:

 - network manager
 - ntp
 - pulseaudio
 -...

which above may be put after the 1st UI, so that boot time can be
decreased some.

thanks,

Having said that, launching REkonq to write this did cause some

Re: [Bug 472522] Re: Deskpro EN p733 when ubuntu changes screen resolution from 1280*1024 it seems OK but screen is scrambled at reboot

2011-05-21 Thread Peter Hall
On 20/11/2010 20:13, Bryce Harrington wrote:
The problem appears to be something wrong with the EDID information
supplied by the monitor. You can see that xrandr reports your monitor
as having dimensions of 0x0mm which obviously is wrong. Elsewhere it
lists it as 300 x 225 mm, but presumably this is enough to confuse it.

Note that these days resolution selection is done in the kernel, not by
 X. In fact 'xrandr' is just a simple command line tool that sends the
resolution switching commands through X to the kernel, it doesn't
actually perform the mode switches itself - this is done by kernel mode
selection (KMS). I'll refile the bug against the kernel.

 ** Description changed:

The system (Deskpro EN p733) is connected to a Philips 107B monitor.
When I try to change the resolution, ubuntu does not recognise the
display type, but it does offer several resolution variants. If I
select 1024*768 (which suits my old eyes much better than the original)
everything works fine - until I reboot. Then I get a screen which seems
to have versions of the display (slightly displaced) on top of each
other. The computer worked fine at 1024*768 with Windows 2000.

Disconcertingly if then I try one of the safe variants of login, I can
eventually get in, BUT my wireless connection is lost.

This sounds to me like the back end end of some peripheral control file
has been lost when the system shuts down.

[Bug 655184] Re: Menus should be condensed to fit panel/overlay of appmenu

2011-05-21 Thread nachokb
in extreme cases like Stefan's, perhaps something like if it can't show
at least two menus or XXX pixels, default to only show 'More' but named
something like Menu and having the whole app's menu in
vertical/overflow layout...

Or adopt something like Firefox's approach and make the app name
clickable and popup the menu (though that would be inconsistent with the
default wide-enough behavior)

Explanation of the Ubuntu delta and why it can be dropped:
We can sync the package as debian has incorporated the ftbfs change which was
in ubuntu.

Changelog entries since current oneiric version 2.4.2-1ubuntu1:

slimevolley (2.4.2+dfsg-1) unstable; urgency=low

  * Team upload.
  * Link to libm to prevent FTBFS with --no-add-needed.
Closes: #615775
  * Slightly improve descriptions.
  * Add more copyright information about the font for the mushrooms theme.
  * Add a get-orig-source target to create DFSG-free tarball.

[Bug 783897] Re: 'Package Operation Failed' on Update

2011-05-21 Thread Fabio Marconi
Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does
not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to
a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you
are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are
having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if
you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see

[Bug 749811] Re: [r300] Screensaver will not complete screensaver to sleep mode, PC freezes and must be hard rebooted

2011-05-21 Thread Brett
I've found a less than satisfactory, but acceptable solution until this
bug is fixed. When I log in, the first thing I do is issue the command
xset -dpms to turn off the energy star features (standby, suspend,
off). This means I can now have my screensaver active and close the lid
on my laptop, but the screen never turns off.

Not the best solution for the monitor, but if this bug is fixed soon,
then it is acceptable for now. Has there been any headway on the root
of the problem?

[Bug 622265] Re: ath9k AR922X loses connection

2011-05-21 Thread Bullfrog
I've been seeing this behavior since I changed my old wifi G card with a
DWA-547.
When moving big amount of data suddenly it stops passing any info on wifi but
apparently the system doesn't realize it (nothing on dmesg and wifi is still
seen as up and connected). To unstuck it, I can either wait (sometimes
doesn't work) or force a reconnect (I'm using network manager).
Happening on Ubuntu 10.10, kernel 2.6.35-28-generic (from repositories). Was
happening in the past also with 10.04.
Haven't tried 11.

On the other side I've a router TP Link WL841ND, not experiencing any
issues with other devices (Windows, Android and so on).

  Binary package hint: evince

When I close the lid on my thinkpad t420s and reopen it, I can't use X.
I can still move the mouse about but everything behind it remains
static. If I leave it long enough to go into a screensaver then I just
see the contents of the screen from before the screensaver went on. I
can see a text editing cursor over the bit where I'd type my password.
If there are buttons on the screen then I can click them but there are
no visible changes, but they have an effect. For instance I can stop and
  resume music this way.

When I put the laptop to sleep and bring it back again the screen has a
black background, unless it's in one of the tty sessions, in which case
it shows that when I go back to X.

I honestly dont think we can pin it to nvidia per se. some people have
managed to get it to work by disabling desktop effects, others by
downgrading Xorg and others by using the --notransperancy switch.

once I commented the line below in /etc/fstab:

          /SWAP.swap    none  swap    sw   0   0

The swap file is created already once you install using the
pre-installed image. What the fstab entry is doing is basically
activating the swap file. You can trace and see what is happening by
giving swapon -a by hand after booting without the swap entry at your
fstab.

The swap file to be created is 512M bytes, so takes long time since the
rootfs is over mmc card, which is
 very slow compared with HD.

Also  I find  the below is done before appearance of the first UI:

     - network manager
     - ntp
     - pulseaudio
     -...

which above may be put after the 1st UI, so that boot time can be
 decreased some.

This is all started once the user session is initialized, and is
expected. I'm getting the UI after one minute or so, so something else
must be wrong with your setup.

[Bug 777713] Re: cups pdf prints only blank page

2011-05-21 Thread Ulf Martin
Solution found.
You need to delete the CUPS-PDF printer then install it again going through the
New Printer dialogue.
I haven't tried it, but this procedure may work for other printers too which do
not work after the upgrade.
So this issue can be closed.

[Bug 786098] [NEW] Unable to cleanly exit F11 fullscreen in Chromium under Maximus

2011-05-21 Thread Paddy Launch
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: maximus

I am using Chromium (11.0.696.68 (84545) Ubuntu 10.04) under Netbook
Remix in conjunction with Maximus. I have Chromium preferences set to
Use system title bar and borders. When I press F11 to get fullscreen
this works as expected. However, when I press F11 a second time to exit
fullscreen, I am left with a Chromium instance that is (a) no longer
maximized (b) has no borders or title bar and (c) is perpetually on
top. The only way to proceed from here to return the desktop to normal
is to exit Chromium.

Unsure if this is a Chromium or Maximus bug?

[Bug 786100] [NEW] USB devices can't be mounted

2011-05-21 Thread feci
Public bug reported:

Since a few days ago the auto or manual mounting of USB devices is not working.
As far as I've seen the block device for the USB devices are not created in
/dev/.
The device name and ID is visible with lsusb.
There is also an error in dmesg after a device is plugged in:

[ 5478.720039] usb 2-3: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 2
[ 5478.882320] usb 2-3: device descriptor read/all, error -71

I've also tried to disable ehci_usd, but it did not help.

And of course everything is working with Ubuntu 8.10, with an older
kernel.

Hopefully somebody already found this bug and knows a solution for it.

[Bug 784992] Re: lottanzb segfaults every few minutes on natty

2011-05-21 Thread Severin Heiniger
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 692635 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/692635

Thanks a lot for taking the time to report this bug. You are perfectly
right. I'm experiencing these frequent crashes myself and I know how
annoying they are.

I've already spent quite some time trying to figure out what is done
incorrectly in LottaNZB that causes these crashes in the low-level
libraries. The most likely reason is that it is some sort of multi-
threading issue, which is particularly hard to debug.

I'll definitively try harder to fix this bug. Any help is welcome.

accidently managed to take this kernel oops screnshot recently. I
showed up on an external monitor. At other times, when I try to resume,
the screen just stays black with a blinking cursor top-left
