[Bug 918254] Re: Realtek ALC269VB, needs to manually edit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf to work

2012-01-20 Thread Lorenzo Zoffoli
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected precise

** Description changed:

I have a laptop ASUS N53Jq, it mounts Realtek ALC269VB as sound card.

Every time I install ubuntu I need to add: options snd-hda-intel
model=auto in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf to get it to work.

It is not so annoying, 'cause it is necessary only once per
installation, but if it were not necessary it would be great!

  Regards,
  - zoff -

2012-01-20 Thread Yani
Sorry on further inspection disabling udev module loading isn't changing
anything other than pulseaudio's output, even without the above change
the card is seen by alsa.. only the mixer is not attatched properly:

$ cat /proc/asound/cards

HDA Intel PCH at 0xb090 irq 48

I suspect there is a problem finding an alsa mixer profile for the device...

is it really that annoying to implement?

No, of course not. But it's an additional friction for every user of the
system, if we expose it as an option.

We have had a perfectly good (and very insightful) suggestion to use
permissions to cover this. There are some implementation issues with
that, but I'm more happy to cover the cost of the harder implementation
than to ask every single Ubuntu user to have to parse another option.

[Bug 154086] Re: Installing to HDD with previous ubuntu fails to create fresh LVM claiming group already in use

2012-01-20 Thread Chris J Arges
Just tested this with a daily precise server iso:
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/precise/alpha-1/

Installed and used Guided - Use entire disk and setup LVM. Then installed
again using Guided - Use entire disk and setup LVM.
The installer allowed me to write over the existing LVM and warned me about it.

I was wondering if I'm not reproducing correctly. Can somebody else
verify this with the current iso?

Thanks,

Re: [Bug 910272] Re: USB-Parallel adapter produces crappy device URI and CUPS usb backend cannot cope with it

2012-01-20 Thread nvsoar
On 1/20/2012 7:40, Till Kamppeter wrote:
The trick is the following: You must have ALL binary packages in ONE
separate directory, neither an incomplete set of binary packages, nor
packages of different versions in one directory. Go into the directory
with the desired version and install all packages with ONE command line:

 sudo dpkg -i --force-depends *.deb

Then the package should get installed and after the installation there
will be no dependency mismatches any more.

Please be specific about what packages I should download from where. I
am now looking at
https://launchpad.net/~till-kamppeter/+archive/ppa/+packages
In the section labeled Package Files I see about 40 files, some of
which are .deb files.
I'm guessing that all of the i386.deb plus the all.deb files is the
answer. Will go with that in the absence of confirmation. Is there a
way to download these files as a group?
(FWIW - I thought that the idea of a package was to contain all that
would be needed to make the install.)
Thank you.

[Bug 437246] Re: [Karmic] alarm-clock-applet crashes when clearing alarms

2012-01-20 Thread Joe Harrington
I have also experienced numerous crashes. All I did was set two alarms,
5 minutes apart and about 20 minutes in the future, simple ring with the
default tone. It crashed while clearing alarms twice yesterday. I
don't have any error messages and /var/crash is empty. I'm on Ubuntu
11.10, updated, on a Thinkpad W510. I'm using gnome-fallback, if that
makes any difference.

[Bug 919298] [NEW] lightdm crashes/loops if guest disabled and no initial user

2012-01-20 Thread Owen Dunn
Public bug reported:

I'm configuring a preseeded automated installation of Ubuntu 12.04.
Because in its final state the system will get all its users from the
local Active Directory domain I do not have an initial user created, so
in my preseed configuration file I have the line:

d-i passwd/make-user boolean false

My organisation's policies prohibit a guest account, so a
preseed/late_command edits /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf to include the
line:

allow-guest=false

With this arrangement, when lightdm starts at boot time, it starts an X
server and displays a black screen with the mouse pointer in. This
screen disappears almost immediately. This is repeated 59 times, making
switching to another virtual console difficult.

lightdm should behave more sensibly when a local user is not available.

** Affects: lightdm (Ubuntu)

[Bug 916560] Re: Under Linux created a branch on an ntfs partition all work files have current date time

2012-01-20 Thread SegundoBob
Thanks, Martin. Your comments prompted me to look for bzr x-bit and I
found a superseding bug:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bzr/+bug/248333

Jelmer Vernooij (jelmer) wrote on 2011-12-16 (comment 3 on bug 248333)
proposing what sounds like a good solution to me.

I also found the x-bit plugin for Bazaar Windows only. From the
documentation, I can't deduce what it does or whether or not it would
help me.

I'll probably just wait for the fix even though it probably has very,
very low priority.

Re: [Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share

2012-01-20 Thread Tom
Hi :)
The new Gnome has gone weird too.  It's easier to influence the direction that
Unity takes whereas Gnome is firmly taking it's own path regardless of what
distros want.  Distros that are sticking with Gnome tend to avoid Gnome 3 or
tweak it back to look like Gnome 2 (ie Mint).  Hopefully Unity will start to
look more familiar as it becomes more friendly for power-users.
Regards from
Tom :)

[Bug 919293] Re: the average rating bug

2012-01-20 Thread Pedro Bessa
** Description changed:

  steps to reproduce:
  1. launch Ubuntu Software Store
  2. by the right of Best Rated, there's a More button that shows you the top
50 Best Rated apps in Ubuntu Software Store

  expected results:
since many people are interested in using Firefox and few people are
interested in using Renmina, Firefox should appear above Renmina

  actual results:
although many people are interested in using Firefox and few people are
interested in using Renmina, Firefox appears *way* below Renmina, in other
words, Firefox isn't even a top 50 app, but Renmina is a top 10 app

  comments:
Firefox browses the internet well, Renmina connects to remote desktops
excellently
Firefox does what its author says that it does well, Renmina does what its
author says that it does excellently
quality shows you how well an app does what the app's author says that the
app does

many people are interested in using Firefox and few people are interested in
using Renmina
popularity shows you how many people are interesting in using an app

if I create an app that does something that few people want to do, but
my app does that thing excellently, it will be a top 10 app like Renmina
  is

- quality * popularity = importance, anyone?
+ quality (stars) * popularity (users) = importance (points), anyone?

Re: [Bug 871427] Re: 1164:7efd YUANRD STK7700D DVB TV card

2012-01-20 Thread Gregor Jasny
The kernel package would be the one that provides the drivers. You may ask
on linux-media about the support status of your device.
http://vger.kernel.org/vger-lists.html#linux-media

If it is supported upstream, Ubuntu might be able to backport a fix.

[Bug 917962] Re: BUG: scheduling while atomic: swapper

2012-01-20 Thread Joseph Salisbury
Thanks for all the work bisecting, Yves-Alexis!

So it looks like the following commit caused the regression:

efb8d21b2c6db3497655cc6a033ae8a9883e4063 Merge branch 'tty-next' of
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/gregkh/tty

I can build a test kernel with commits up to:
3cb603284b3d256ae9ae9e65887cee8416bfef15 Merge branch 'hwmon-for-linus' of
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/groeck/linux-staging

That was the commit just before efb8d21b2c6db3497655cc6a033ae8a9883e4063

I'll post the location of the test kernel shortly. It would be great if
folks affected by this bug can test the kernel and provide feed back.

[Bug 912461] Re: Replace spread mode for Window previews

2012-01-20 Thread jeroenverh
Added four new mock-ups:

* Two window previews vertically aligned
* Two window previews horizontally aligned
* Three window previews vertically aligned
* Three window previews horizontally aligned

Efficiency:
Vertically aligned window previews are more efficient: the distance to travel
from the application icon to one of the window previews is shorter.

Usability testing:
Some usability testing needs to be done to discover what the user likes the
most: vertically or horizontally aligned window previews.

Hope you guys/girls like it!

** Summary changed:

- Replace spread mode for Window previews
+ Replace spread mode for window previews

** Description changed:

  Feature request:
- Replace the spread mode for Window previews.
+ Replace the spread mode for window previews.

  The spread mode is:
Annoying: because of the zoom-out and zoom-in animation.
Intrusive: because the whole screen changes.
- Tedious and Inefficient: Because it takes (far!) too much time to switch
between windows.
+ Tedious and inefficient: Because it takes (f too much time to switch between
windows.

Because switching between open windows of the same application is
something you have to do often, it's very important that this works as
  efficient as possible.

  I propose the following solution:
Instead of showing the spread mode, show all the open windows of the same
application as window previews near the application icon in the panel. This
would only need to work when more than one window of an application is open.

Imagine two or more windows previews horizontally of vertically aligned
at the right side of the application icon.

When you want to switch between two or more windows of the same
application you simply go the the application icon and the window
previews are shown. You than just select the window you want and off
  you go! Simple!

  Window previews are:
Not annoying : because there are no animations.
Not intrusive: the whole screen doesn't need to change.
Efficient: Because the animation is not necessary time is saved.

  I use Ubuntu 11.10 and Unity 4.24.0-0ubuntu2.1.

[Bug 915158] Re: Process is not closing

2012-01-20 Thread Jilles Tjoelker
You can see the same problem with any shell with a command like

(sleep 3 exec /bin/sleep 6)

because most versions of /bin/sleep do not clean up zombies (here, a
zombie from an inherited child process).

Dash does not consider the existence of a background process a reason to
fork for an external command (that needs to be execve()'ed). Therefore
you may see zombies if you start some background jobs and the final
command is external and does not clean up zombies it did not start
itself. As a workaround you can add a builtin at the end, for example

(sleep 3 sleep 6; exit $?)

With bash, this does not happen because bash appears to fork always for
an external command unless it is the only thing to be run in the process
at all. However, this policy results in more process creations than
necessary and therefore poorer performance.

POSIX does not appear to say much about whether the shell should allow
commands to inherit child processes in this manner. However, a shell is
definitely not required to fork as much as bash does.

2012-01-20 Thread Bryce Harrington
Ok, well when xorg-edgers is in a state it can be installed, please
install it and verify the 0x7a02 crashes go away.

As far as I know we haven't introduced anything that would fix the
0x7b009004 crash. However, it's entirely conceivable the 0x7b009004 and
0x7a02 hangs are just different aspects of the same bug. So, what
we need is to verify that with the new mesa neither crash occurs.

[Bug 917386] Re: Unity panel doesn't fit with onboard hide button

2012-01-20 Thread marmuta
Thanks for the bug report, David. I believe I've made some progress,
though Unity/gnome-shell/GTK3 are still moving targets. We may have to
revisit this in the future.

Now, if floating icon, status icon and force-to-top mode are disabled,
Onboard should properly show up in the launcher and can be restored from
there.

This can't be done with force-to-top mode enabled, so now in this case
the floating icon will show up as the last option to unhide onboard.

[Bug 907201] Re: Update Manager shows updates that can't be selected

2012-01-20 Thread matteo sisti sette
No, running dist-upgrade doesn't solve the problem.

The output from dist-upgrade was:

The following packages have been kept back:
  libboost-date-time-dev libboost-dev libboost-iostreams-dev
  libboost-regex-dev

plus there were a few packages that _were_ installed or upgraded. I lost
the output from dist-upgrade, but if I run it again it shows the part
mentioned above, plus 0 upgraded / 0 installed etc.

The 4 packages that were kept back actually are the ones that show up
unchecked and uncheckable in Update Manager.
I'm not sure whether there were more of them before I ran dist-upgrade.

[Bug 918604] Re: [needs-packaging] lightdm-gtk-greeter

2012-01-20 Thread Micah Gersten
I believe this is currently blocked by bug 916477. You might want to
chat with Corsac from pkg-xfce (#debian-xfce on freenode) in Debian to
see if he needs any help as I think he's working on this as well.

[Bug 917386] Re: Unity panel doesn't fit with onboard hide button

2012-01-20 Thread marmuta
Concerning the 'x' on the hide button, if you have suggestions what to
use instead, feel free to let us know (new bug, branch, whatever). We
tried some alternatives during development and of those, the cross
simply seemed to be the least bad choice.
