I have version 4.3, but I still have this problem. I tried purging guake and installing it again. I have not tried to use sound for a while, so this may relate to the updates noted by David Robert Lewis ... I am back where I was in my post here of 2011-05-04 (#10): usb headset / mike appears in hardware, but not in input or output. Sound preferences also crashes if you attempt to test the speakers. I tried the killall pulseaudio of #19 and this made the headset appear in the outputs (but no mike on the inputs). The test speakers function no longer causes a crash - but there is no sound, so it is not much of an improvement! [Bug 1022555] [NEW] Crashed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS because of incompatibility between Compiz and NVIDIA
Public bug reported: Dear Ubuntu Development Team, I was asked by Jeet to create a bug report on this. In the very slim probability that this has not been reported yet, here it is. It has now been four months since the release of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. The problems that arise in the utilisation of existing NVIDIA graphics drivers with 12.04 has now been well documented with hundreds of posts on the Internet. The fundamental manifestation is a loss of windowing functionality upon bootup, making the 12.04 LTS unusable as is, at least with respect to the 3D redering of the GUI. From the discussions on the Internet, it looks like this problem is perhaps not even restricted to Ubuntu since similar symptoms have appeared on other Linux variants as well, e.g. Fedora. The solution to this problem has been quite diverse, ranging from editing some of the X config files to running opensource drivers (that are extremely inefficient) to downgrading Ubuntu from 12.04 LTS (!!!) to Ubuntu 11.10 I have not come accross any official response from the Ubuntu development team with respect to this specific problem. Since 12.04 is an LTS we would hope that they would take this problem seriously. However, one needs to keep in mind that the solution to the problem probably lies not within Canonical alone, but with an interaction between NVIDIA as a company and the opensource community. I hope the Ubuntu development team takes this problem as a serious one that affects the reputation of Ubuntu LTS releases as stable operating environments. Recognising that the problem is not universal, but hardware-dependent, I have two questions: 1) Is there, four months after the release of 12.04 LTS, an efficient solution to this problem? 2) If there is not an efficient solution to the problem now, what does the development team foresee about the solution to this problem in the future? I am not sure whether this will help anyone, but I have just checked my laptop, which is also running 11.04 (the comment above relates to my desktop). The laptop was last updated on 28 June, and works fine. In addition to the suggestion in #328, I also disabled java script in FF 13. Edit- Preferences- Content. I always have done a similar tweak with windows I did it in Ubuntu just out of habit. No freezes under moderate usage for almost 2 weeks now! I doubt this matters but I created 4 partitions when I last did my last fresh install - boot - swap- 2 file system. Then the kernel roll back. (I had been using 2 partitions with the standard PAE kernel ) and had many freezes. I might be affected as well. I have a Toshiba NB550D. Kubuntu 12.04. Log strace to file and the foreground stdout and stderr to another file. Post the results here. While the system is in the failure mode, in running ps aux do you see a series of kpartx processes in uninterruptable state? I presume you've configured your lvm.conf blacklist correctly? I had this issue myself here in Ubuntu 12.04 with the SDL games. The easiest fix I was able to come up with was to edit /etc/environment file and add SDL_VIDEO_X11_DGAMOUSE=0 to the end of it then re-log. Hi Robie I have tried doing as you suggest, but the automatic upload of the information appears not to be working. Possibly this is another symptom of the same problem. I also tried implementing the upload from the command line, but the upload failed there, too. I am attaching TWO crash reports to this email, one from sshd, and one from dropbear, both generated in the last few minutes. I have crash reports on my other computer for dropbear and sshd for last Friday, but the automatic process failed there because I had removed the packages. Ironically, when I re-installed openssh-server on that machine to enable reporting of the crashes, it obligingly worked right away. Whether this is some kind of fluke or what, I cannot say. I went round the loop purging and re-installing sshd so many times on Friday, all to no avail. So, sshd has started working on one of the computers as mysteriously as it stopped. On the other computer, sshd, dropbear _and_ ubuntu-bug all seem to have problems. Crash reports are attached, as they failed to automatically upload.
