[Bug 1451797] Re: rc.local should require network-online.target

2015-05-05 Thread Dr. Jens Rosenboom
While I agree that this may never have been guaranteed, it has been
working with all previous init systems. For me, the implied policy of
using rc.local is: Run after all other init stuff has finished.

For example, https://github.com/puppetlabs/razor-server uses modifying
rc.local in order to trigger some post installation actions to happen
once the node has rebooted after being installed. This works pretty well
with Precise and Trusty and also seems to be fine with most other
distros.

Also, having a server with no network connectivity ever will also not be
very useful. This is certainly different for desktop systems, but then,
why would you have the

After=network.target

at all?

[Bug 1400175] Re: Acer Aspire ES1-311-P1D5 won't shutdown after system halted

2015-05-05 Thread Clemens S
Hey Martin,
switching to UEFI/SecureBoot on Ubuntu 14.04 is not trivial, but also not that
hard if you follow this guide:

http://aaron-kelley.net/blog/2011/12/migrating-an-ubuntu-installation-
from-bios-to-uefi/

It's not perfect, but the best one I could find.
But what do you mean by keeping Windows? You certainly don't need Windows to
migrate your system to UEFI if you meant that. I only used Windows for flashing
the BIOS, nothing else. For switching to UEFI, you just need a bootable
Live-USB stick with Ubuntu (or similar).

Concerning the touchpad problems: I disassembled my laptop to a point
that I could inspect the touchpad and then covered everything on its
back (just using clear sellotape) which looked like it could short out
something when it's pressed. My mouse pointer never spazzed out since
then. ACER's quality control isn't the best it seems.

2015-05-05 Thread Timo Aaltonen
seth: do you still have the bug with xserver-xorg-video-intel

http://koti.kapsi.fi/~tjaalton/bdw/

and check that you don't have a GPU hang reported in dmesg when the

This bug has become a meta bug with all sorts of issues and handwaving.
Most are probably fixed by the new kernel, some SNA backports to -intel
might still be necessary.

[Bug 1451807] [NEW] mod-wsgi not working with Python 3.4

[Bug 1382481] Re: Support for CloudStack's basic networking in Precise

2015-05-05 Thread Ben Howard
Hi Vincent -- thanks for helping. I would be happy to include this patch
as part of the next SRU, but since we don't have a CloudStack to test
this on, we would need your help on putting this through the SRU
process. If you can apply the patch and the SRU'ify this bug, I'll be

[Bug 1451798] [NEW] black screen (but with cursor) after rotating by 180 degrees

2015-05-05 Thread Martin Ueding
Public bug reported:

I use `xrandr --output LVDS1 --rotate inverted` to rotate the contents
of my screen by 180 degrees as part of my thinkpad-scripts. This has
worked well until Kubuntu 14.10. Now it still works when I have an
external screen (DP2) attached.

I just tried it out now without an external screen attached. The screen
turns black, but I can still see the mouse cursor. The cursor also
changes according to the program that it is on, one just does not see
the program. I can also click and it will have some effect.

To see the screen again, I do [Ctrl][Alt][F1] and then [Ctrl][Alt][F7].
Somebody else has the same ThinkPad X220 with Ubuntu (not sure the
version, though) but uses Unity. He has the exact same problem, so this
is not bound to KDE or Unity, but fundamental to something that `xrandr`
does.

[Bug 1451797] [NEW] rc.local should require network-online.target

2015-05-05 Thread Dr. Jens Rosenboom
Public bug reported:

The current definition in `/lib/systemd/system/rc-local.service` uses
`After=network.target`, which is pretty useless, as `network.target`
according to
http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/systemd/NetworkTarget/ only has
relevance during shutdown, which never happens for rc.local.

The result is that tasks in rc.local may get started before the network
is properly setup, which may cause them to fail, as this is a
significant change from the old SysV init behaviour.

The solution would be to change the dependency to

Wants=network-online.target
After=network-online.target

see also the notes in
http://www.freedesktop.org/software/systemd/man/systemd.special.html for
that.

[Bug 1447556] Re: AMD radeon hangs/crashes

2015-05-05 Thread Petter Adsen
Look, guys - no offense intended, but I'm just not going to invest that
amount of time in tracking down which commit causes/fixes a bug when I
can just run an unofficial kernel.

If anyone else gets bitten by this and have to run an official Ubuntu-
supplied kernel then I might consider doing it, but since it seems only
I am affected I won't bother. I suggest you close this.

[Bug 1451277] Re: Extremely high IOWait and processes hungs after utopic-vivid upgrade

2015-05-05 Thread Sergio Callegari
Brad, I cannot provide log files:

- If I boot with the zip disk the machine goes to 60% iowait and processes
dealing with I/O start hunging. I do not want to risk my data just to try
running apport (that would likely fail anyway).
- If I boot without the zip disk, the log files cannot report anything because
the machine works.

I have already spent one whole night, diagnosing this issue down to the
ATAPI zip drive.

So I reset the bug as new. Please confirm it is propagated upstream.

[Bug 1451800] Re: Wish: Please provide an easy downgrade path to LTS

2015-05-05 Thread Sergio Callegari
I imagined something like that. But if this is the situation, I think
that much more care should be put in providing complete information to
users.

When people moved from LTS to utopic there was no information about the
fact that such path was going to force people to a reinstall to LTS
after utopic because vivid was going to be a test bed for non mature
technologies. Personally, I expected KDE4 and KDE5 to exist side by side
(at least via PPAs) for a sufficient time to address regressions.

I really cannot see how plasma 5 can catch up with all the problems
above by the time utopic goes EOL.

[Bug 1273890] Re: emulator camera does not take picture

2015-05-05 Thread Vicamo Yang
It's libaalcamera.so (https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/qtubuntu-
camera) that sets illegal values:

  android_camera_set_preview_size(-1, -1)
  android_camera_set_preview_fps(0)

However, it's camera.goldfish.so that returns wrong preview fps range
values. According to Android doc[1], the returned values should be
scaled by 1000 but were not.

As for preview-size, it looks like a bug in
AalViewfinderSettingsControl::chooseOptimalSize because it may still
return invalid QSize even when there are non-optimal candidates
available. Besides, the magic number in line 213 looks dangerous because
sizes[1] may be illegal.

208 QSize AalViewfinderSettingsControl::chooseOptimalSize(const QListQSize
sizes) const
209 {
210 if (!sizes.empty()) {
211 if (m_aspectRatio == 0) {
212 // There are resolutions supported, choose one non-optimal one):
213 return sizes[1];
214 }
215
216 QListQSize::const_iterator it = sizes.begin();
217 while (it != sizes.end()) {
218 const float ratio = (float)(*it).width() /
(float)(*it).height();
219 const float EPSILON = 10e-3;
220 if (fabs(ratio - m_aspectRatio)  EPSILON) {
221 return *it;
222 }
223 ++it;
224 }
225 }
226
227 return QSize();
228 }

I simply observe users every couple of days being confused by this
change and am asking if there is something that we can do to help them.
It seems that there are people who use (for example) irssi with
gnome-terminal but not tabs. They would have had no need to know about
these shortcuts before and making the leap to find out about it is
going to be tricky.

It's fair enough to just say that this is the new behaviour and users
just have to fix it themselves if they want. The solution is available
on various blogs, as you say. I was just hoping we could do something
nice.

Could you close this bug if you think that it's not worth doing
anything?

[Bug 1431371] Re: Left Alt + num is not passed to irssi in terminal when in GUI

2015-05-05 Thread Egmont Koblinger
Ubuntu might decide to create a patch and apply to Vivid, in that case
it'll reach its users in a short time. It's beyond my control (I'm not
an Ubuntu developer, and for this reason I can't close this bug either.)

Even if upstream addressed this situation, it would take 1 year until it
makes it to another Ubuntu release, and by that time probably every
affected user will have figured out a workaround.

[Bug 1451800] [NEW] Wish: Please provide an easy downgrade path to LTS

2015-05-05 Thread Sergio Callegari
Public bug reported:

Kubuntu keeps saying that We provide Kubuntu 14.04LTS for those who
still prefer Plasma 4.

But users who moved from LTS to utopic, now are *forced* to Plasma 5
even if it is still a regression in almost any sense. I am sure, that
with time it will become a great desktop, but for now:

- Plasma frequently crashes (in many occasions works goes lost)
- Kwin fails badly on nvidia hardware with legacy 304 driver (all users with
legacy nvidia hardware are left in the cold, unless they manually install a
known patch)
- .profile is not sourced by KDM (a lot of user configured stuff breaks)
- The login manager does not support a guest user
- Hplip cannot dock in the system tray (all users get a nasty error at every
login and then stay without HP printer support, unless they manually install a
known patch)
- Plasma desktop crashes when adding an external monitor and switching primary
output (so users with external monitors are left in the cold)
- The session manager is not able to restore applications to the proper virtual
desktops (which is worse than not having session management at all)
- Some widgets once added cannot be removed because they make plasma crash when
one tries to remove them (notably cpu load), so that one has to manually remove
them one by one, otherwise users try to use them.
- Screen savers support is completely missing (so machines occasionally get
confused for being switched off and unplugged)
- The system settings are incomplete wrt what was available in plasma 4
- Some buttons in system settings do nothing (e.g. Online Accounts - create -
Google). Why are those buttons there in first place?
- and more...

[Bug 1431371] Re: Left Alt + num is not passed to irssi in terminal when in GUI

2015-05-05 Thread Egmont Koblinger
@zds: Making it a profile-level setting could lead to another pretty
annoying misleading behavior, e.g. you have two tabs, Alt+2 switches
from the 1st to the 2nd, but then Alt+1 doesn't switch back. There's a
good reason hotkeys are global, not per-profile.

@laney: I wasn't the one pushing for this change, apparently the main
developer doesn't show any interest in changing this. I have no idea
what could be done to improve the situation, and whether it needs
improvement at all. The issue has been discussed on several forums by
now, I believe everyone who uses IRC is power user enough that they can
type this question into whichever search engine and find the answer.
Software keep changing by little bits like this one over time and you
need to get used to minor changes quite often. I don't see this one
being a bigger deal than the average UI change. Am I missing something?

2015-05-05 Thread Doug McMahon

  Test case:
  fresh .conf/vlc/
  Open a 720p video (size is correct), close vlc
  Open a 1080p vid (size is correct), close vlc
  Open a 720p vid, it's resized to 1080p size window

  Test case:
  open a 1080p video in vlc, close vlc
  open vlc, it open with a 1080p size window, in most cases filling the screen.
It should open to a more suitable default size

  Test case:
  fresh .conf/vlc
  open a 720p vid (sized correctly
  open a smaller vid, ex. here 512 x 288 (sized correctly
  open a 1080p vid (sized correctly
  open either of the above, they will be sized to 1080p window size

  Test case:
  Open 1080p vid, click restore, then close
  open a 720p vid (size is correct

  Conclusion here is any vid that merges the window deco into unity panel
- will cause vlc to open subsequent vids at that size unless vlc is
- restored out of the panel before switching or closing
+ will cause vlc or other players that merge to open subsequent vids at
+ that size unless vlc ect. are restored out of the panel before switching

[Bug 1451797] Re: rc.local should require network-online.target

2015-05-05 Thread Martin Pitt
The LSB (http://refspecs.linuxbase.org/LSB_4.1.0/LSB-Core-generic/LSB-
Core-generic/facilname.html) has never required to wait with calling
rc.local until the network is up. After all, that might very well be
never, and this would both diminish the usefulness of rc.local as well
as change existing behaviour. Or did you see some documentation which
says otherwise?

If you need to run something after getting online, I suggest putting it
into /etc/network/ifup.d/.

[Bug 1451825] [NEW] Add cpuidle-powernv upstream bug fixes and upstream patch to fix kernel regression due to cpuidle on to 14.04.03 kernel

2015-05-05 Thread bugproxy
Public bug reported:

This is a feature request to include the following patches in 14.04.03
kernel.

[1] 74aa51b5ccd39753 cpuidle: powernv: Populate cpuidle state details by
querying the device-tree
(3.18 upstream)

[2] cpuidle/powernv: Read target_residency value of idle states from DT if
available
https://lkml.org/lkml/2015/2/3/23

[3] tick/broadcast-hrtimer : Fix suspicious RCU usage in idle loop
http://linuxppc.10917.n7.nabble.com/PATCH-tick-broadcast-hrtimer-Fix-suspicious-RCU-usage-in-idle-loop-td89675.html

[1] and [2] patches provide fixes to read the latency and
target_residency values of different idle states from the device tree if
they are present in the device tree. This fix will avoid cpu from
aggressively  entering into fastsleep.

[3] is an important fix against a kernel regression down the cpuidle
path which was reported in the community.

This is the normal policykit text backend. I take it you see the same if

I don't have an immediate idea why there are two choices. What does

[Bug 1119420] [NEW] The notification area whitelist is missing from 13.04, making some applications unusable

2015-05-05 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Unity has a whitelist option for the systray. For example, I can use the
following to whitelist everything:

gsettings set com.canonical.Unity.Panel systray-whitelist ['all']

Selective choices are also possible.

However, that option has disappeared from 13.04. This is a serious
omission, as some applications (such as TrueCrypt) use it extensively,
and others (such as SpiderOak) actually require it for some of their
critical functionality.

The ability to whitelist selected or all applications is vital for a
functioning system. Please replace it.

[Bug 1451789] Re: bcmwl causes system freeze

2015-05-05 Thread monochromec
When trying to reproduce the issue, I noticed that I could log into the
GUI as created by the session manager (lightdm) if I left the cable in
the onboard NIC. That means the system does go ahead when it can at
least create one network connection other than lo (which is the default
auto in my 15.04 configuration). If the NIC is not connected, the system
will exhibit the symptoms as described above.

I attach both kernel logs (with and without a cable attached). More than
happy to open a kernel bug report although that I do not think that this
is solely a kernel issue. Please advise.

The last kernel version known to work is 3.17.8-031708; any later
version up to 4.0.1 as installed from the Ubuntu kernel mainline archive
fails with the symptoms described above. I also tried to reproduce this
on version 4.1 but couldn't due to a GPL licensing issue (cf.
https://github.com/longsleep/bcmwl-ubuntu/issues/2).

** Attachment added: Kernel log without cable attached

[Bug 1382481] Re: Support for CloudStack's basic networking in Precise

2015-05-05 Thread Vincent Bernat
Hi Ben!

I am already using this patch. I can prepare a package with it, test it
and provide a debdiff (if that's what you mean with SRU'ify). I am
unable to test if that still works with advanced networking. Would
somebody be able to do that?

[Bug 1417826] Re: display acting up. overlay .. ?

2015-05-05 Thread Morten Hundevad
Ether it is coincidence scrolling issue is gone as it randomly seems to
be other times after reboot. or it is related. to the status bar.

It is late so i need to go to bed i can try disable it tomorrow and see
if it returns.

But enable auto hide and i do NOT have side ways scrolling issue.

Is there anything more info i can provide. this issue is really a pain
in the behind =(
