This indicates that the debconf frontend was shut down before you could
be prompted for disabling secureboot on your system, which is required
for dkms modules.

How did you go about installing the rtl8812au driver package? Did you
select this from the "Additional Drivers" dialog of Software & Updates?

To complete the installation of this package, you will want to run 'sudo
apt -f install' from a terminal.

[Bug 1655348] Re: gpu-manager Error: can't open /lib/modules/

2017-07-29 Thread Peter Brandon
I may have a similar problem in 17.04 (to which I just upgraded). When
I try to play a video game, the computer completely freezes anywhere
from 30 seconds to 40 minutes after I start. It's done so repeatedly
and only when playing this game. I see very little by way of errors in
my logs, but I do get errors about the gpu-manager and dkms like those
reported here.

Oddly, when I run the following: sudo lshw -c video | grep driver
I get:  configuration: driver=i915 latency=0

Which is a driver for my intel CPU's graphics processor. This is odd
because I have a separate graphics chip, a radeon, installed, and radeon
drivers installed but these do not show.

When I run: sudo systemctl status gpu-manager.service
I get the following, which is similar to what I see in my system log:

● gpu-manager.service - Detect the available GPUs and deal with any system
changes

[Bug 1311316] Re: After locking screen there is no input field to type password for unlock

2017-07-29 Thread Rael
@Andrea, yes, the username is properly displayed above the missing
password input field.

@Mark, you have to:

1. go to a TTY (press Ctrl + Alt + F1 to open it) and run this command: sudo
loginctl unlock-sessions
2. get back to X.org (press Ctrl + Alt + F7)
3. now restart compiz with: compiz --replace

[Bug 1311316] Re: After locking screen there is no input field to type password for unlock

Here is a capture of the top row of the lock screen.

And, it seems that neither the `compiz --replace` nor the `unity

it.

Why 28 packages aren't upgraded? I have less problems using your derivative
brother "Mint", but I want to know Ubuntu as it has nice desktop (I think I'm
still Unity) and as I speak I'm upgrading Ubuntu. I want to give Ubuntu the
chance, but if it keeps up being so unstable then I'm sorry for dumping your
work, I know that OS is not easy to make even if you have a base kernel (like
true Linux is just a kernel and developers who are smart enough make an OS out
of this kernel). So if possible please assist me :)

2017-07-29 Thread Kai Mast
Any progress on this?

A similar problem seems to be that the smallest zoom is 20%. This is not
sufficient when editing large poster.

[Bug 1707426] Re: Other languages characters don't show in recovery mode

2017-07-29 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1707426/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 1690980] Re: unattended-upgrades does not block shutdown of system, as it is designed to

2017-07-29 Thread Balint Reczey
@Julian: When running u-u at shutdown the expectation is that it runs to
completion including the downloads (started by u-u-s).

When running in periodic mode triggered by apt's timer it finishes the
transaction on TERM signal then it exits to let the shutdown continue.
In this case you are right it does not perform the download and
installation steps in the same service. In apt-daily-upgrade's case the
900 second is probably future-proof unless the machine/disk is very
slow.

There are still installer packages which need downloads even during
installation, but they are not updated very often.

[Bug 1574667] Re: Mouse pointer occasionally jumps to the bottom-left corner

2017-07-29 Thread Peter
The solution proposed by Juan Hernandez (message 32) worked for me. I am
running Xubuntu 16.04 on a Dell Inspiron 3542. I finally decided to look
for a fix after successfully using a wireless mouse for some time. I did
not have to modify /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/90-libinput.conf as some
others did.

I started to read books translated from English first. I started with
Harry Potter, actually (check your local library/Amazon). If you'd
rather something more "native", I'm really fond of "La biblioteca de
Babel" by Jose Luis Borges. It's a short story but it's definitely a
challenge  (and a fun read!)

Subject: also thats not true :)

How much would it cost them to upgrade their servers? I mean, i know
doing that in place of compensating us wouldn't cover the *entire*
cost of it, but I would be happier if they said something like "we're
sorry we aren't compensating you for the outages, but the money we
were planning on using for that is going towards making sure this
doesn't happen  again"

Probably touched up a little bit to make it professional but you get the idea

[Bug 1670041] Re: Poor performance of Atheros QCA6174 802.11ac (rev 32) (Killer Wireless 1535)

2017-07-29 Thread Dmitrii Shcherbakov
Eric,

I should have tried cubic in the previous (#46) test - quite an
interesting result: http://paste.ubuntu.com/25200234/ (6 tests cubic &
bbr)

lspci | grep QCA
3b:00.0 Network controller: Qualcomm Atheros QCA6174 802.11ac Wireless Network
Adapter (rev 32)

With cubic cwnd grows quite quickly and reaches 608 KBytes in the best
case while with bbr it converges to 8.48 KBytes regardless of the
constants used.

I will build a 4.13rc2 kernel without any modifications and perform the
same test to compare.

[Bug 1705900] Re: Lenovo e73 USB webcam problems

2017-07-29 Thread Lukas Jirkovsky
I tried to update to linux-
image-4.13.0-041300rc2-generic_4.13.0-041300rc2.201707232231_i386.deb,
but I was told it was no longer possible to log in (the login screen
appeared, but it was not possible to write password as if the keyboard
was not connected at all). After reverting to the previous kernel it was
possible to log in again.

However, I still have some findings that may be useful. I tried to add
some debug printk's around the code that caused the null pointer
dereference and I was able to find the exact place where the null
pointer dereference occurs. I used Ubuntu-hwe-4.8.0-58.63_16.04.1 for
that.

The problem is in usb_ifnum_to_if where config->interface[i] is null
(http://kernel.ubuntu.com/git/ubuntu/ubuntu-
xenial.git/tree/drivers/usb/core/usb.c?h=Ubuntu-
hwe-4.8.0-58.63_16.04.1=2e1f960b96b3d80fc2b91809bf0cb02c97abe8f4#n144)

Here's a short snippet of the code:

for (i = 0; i < config->desc.bNumInterfaces; i++) {
  if (config->interface[i]->altsetting[0] /* config->interface[i] == 0 here! */
  .desc.bInterfaceNumber == ifnum) {
return config->interface[i];
  }
}

And it's not a single interface that fails, it seems that all interfaces
are null, since the changed code that I used for debugging actually
looks like this:

for (i = 0; i < config->desc.bNumInterfaces; i++) {
  if (config->interface[i] == 0) {
printk(KERN_ALERT "DEBUG: Interface %d is null\n", i);
continue;
  }
  if (config->interface[i]->altsetting[0]
  .desc.bInterfaceNumber == ifnum) {
return config->interface[i];
  }
}

And in dmesg I found:
júl 23 13:40:11 lenovo kernel: DEBUG: Interface 0 is null
júl 23 13:40:12 lenovo kernel: DEBUG: Interface 1 is null
júl 23 13:40:12 lenovo kernel: DEBUG: Interface 2 is null

júl 23 13:40:13 lenovo kernel: DEBUG: Interface 1 is null
júl 23 13:40:13 lenovo kernel: DEBUG: Interface 2 is null
júl 23 13:40:13 lenovo kernel: DEBUG: Interface 3 is null

[Bug 1697556] Re: Computer freezes after login - 4.10.0-22-generic

2017-07-29 Thread John Lewis
Well, I'm using 4.10.0.28 and nvidia-381 on my XPS 15 9560 and I'm able
to login.

I did update to the latest BIOS version too though (1.34), so maybe that
had an effect, IDK.

It did complain about a plymouthd crash, and I got it to send a report,
so don't know if that will help.

http://www.linuxandubuntu.com/home/how-to-install-latest-nvidia-drivers-in-linux
https://launchpad.net/~graphics-drivers/+archive/ubuntu/ppa

I hope this information helps someone else - I did spend a few hours
trying to find a workaround. :)

[Bug 1705900] Re: Lenovo e73 USB webcam problems

2017-07-29 Thread Lukas Jirkovsky
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected xenial

** Description changed:

  I'm experiencing problems with USB webcam on Lenovo e73 with Ubuntu
  16.04.2 Xenial 32bit.

  Originally with 4.4 connecting the camera often resulted in complete
  hang of the system (apparently not even SysRq worked, though I did not
  test that personally since it is a system I'm administering remotely for
  a family member). There was always a null pointer dereference just
  before the hang, so I suspect that is the culprit (see the attached
  kernel log).

- After some updates the system no longer hangs. I suspect this was fixed
- by going from linux 4.4 to 4.8. However, the webcam still often doesn't
- work and most application just return error. This is usually fixed after
- several tries, but sometimes it is necessary to reboot computer.
- Updating BIOS didn't help. The kernel logs still contain the same null
- pointer dereference with exactly the same stack trace for both 4.8 and
- 4.10.

[Bug 1637733] Re: freeze on login with prime-select intel

2017-07-29 Thread Ingo Reimann
affects me also, BUT:

fresh install of Ubuntu 17.04 + Cinnamon on Dell XPS 15 9560 with Nvidia
GTX1050. Switching worked fine until i installed virtualbox-5.1 with all
dependencies and Steam + Portal 2.

I can`t say, what started the issue, but now, i`m only able to use the
nvidia card.

Have to investigate further.

Workaround #15 does not work for me.

[Bug 1707429] [NEW] Error when installing "g++-multilib libc6-dev-i386" on 64 bit machine

2017-07-29 Thread bel
Public bug reported:

I'm a software developer. I tried to build for 32 bit Linux on 64 bit Linux, to
check type cast warnings occurring only for 32 bit versions. But it seems I
cannot build for 32 bit on my 64 bit machine - gcc -m32 will fail with
"/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lgcc".
Googled for a solution and found
https://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/compile-32bit-application-using-gcc-64-bit-linux.html
Typed "sudo apt-get install g++-multilib libc6-dev-i386".

Then an error message popped up.

The updates for the operating systems stops in the middle and closes the
installation process.

after writing in the terminal: dpkg -l | awk '/^iH/ { print $2 }'

Public bug reported:

Hello,

When I set the system locale into Thai and when it boots up into
recovery mode, it appears menu that actually should be displayed using
Thai character, but it display diamonds instead of proper Thai
characters. And this bug is not just Thai language, it was also found in
