[Bug 1783706] Re: [MIR] oath-toolkit
I reviewed oath-toolkit version 2.6.1-1.2 as checked into cosmic. This isn't a full security audit but rather a quick gauge of maintainability. I especially did not audit the cryptography or xmlsec containers. - seems dead upstream -- more than two years since the last checkin, which failed CI - gitorious.org url in the README is dead - FTBFS for me - Large amount of very fragile-looking vendored code - Appears to log passwords - One CVE in our database: reported in December 2013 and fixed in February 2014. - oath-toolkit provides totp, hotp, and Portable Symmetric Key Container (PSKC) tools -- library, PAM module, utilities - links against xmlsec1; includes md5, sha1, sha2, sha3, aes, perhaps other algorithms - Build-Depends: cdbs, debhelper, libpam0g-dev, datefudge, gtk-doc-tools, dblatex, libxml2-utils, libxmlsec1-dev, dh-autoreconf - Does not daemonize - No networking - postinst/prerm scripts run pam-auth-update, ldconfig - No initscript - No systemd unit files - No setuid files - oathtool executable in the path - No sudo fragments - No udev rules - Some tests are run as part of the build, including the gl/ directories. Tests look like smoke-tests rather than full regressions. - No cron jobs - No systemd timers - Build logs show incorrect code in tests - No subprocesses spawned - The gl/ memory allocation routines are way too fragile and intricate. The memory management in the rest of the program is mixed, there's more integer multiplicates handed to malloc(3) than I like to see, but the ones I inspected all counted a number of objects first, which likely makes them safe, if not ideal. - Logging is mixed -- these tools may log passwords (!) while in use. (The format strings are in the binaries. This is troubling.) - No use of environment - No privileged syscalls - I did not inspect the cryptographic primitives or protocols - I did not notice privileged portions of the code - No temporary files - No WebKit - No PolicyKit - cppcheck reports several issues, some in gl/tests/ and two false positives in gl/xmalloc (cppcheck doesn't understand the intention of the routines). - query_prompt is allocated too short, no space is set aside for a NUL terminating byte. This may need a CVE. - MAX_OTP_LEN check doesn't *always* constrain the length of a password, it feels likely to be a mistake. This may need a CVE. - This appears to log a password: DBG (("conv returned: %s", resp->resp)); - This appears to log a password: DBG (("OTP too short: %s", password)); - This appears to log a password: DBG (("OTP shorter than digits=%d: %s", cfg.digits, password)); - This appears to log a password: DBG (("OTP too long (and no digits=): %s", password)); - This appears to log a password: DBG (("Password: %s ", onlypasswd)); - This appears to log a password: DBG (("authenticate rc %d (%s: %s) last otp %s", rc, - ./oathtool/oathtool.c appears to log passwords: - "password \"%s\" not found in range %ld .. %ld", - "password \"%s\" not found in range %ld .. %ld", This may need a CVE. - gengetopt feels awkward at best: "replacement of strdup, which is not standard" -- strdup is in posix.1-2001 so I have severe doubts that this tool is maintained Gnulib vendored code, perhaps other sources too: - There's a huge amount of copied source code that looks extremely brittle and prone to failure, prone to needing maintenance, and might be vastly out of date compared to recent versions of wherever they were stolen from: - xnmalloc() and XNMALLOC() have integer overflow problems; use calloc() instead. Or remove entirely, as nothing uses these. - YYCOPY()'s definition with __builtin_memcpy() may have integer overflow problem - get_tz() is grossly overcomplicated - parse_datetime() is grossly overcomplicated in part because get_tz() is overcomplicated - parse_datetime() may fail with input such as TZ="... I suspect this function is not suitable for untrusted inputs. - malloca looks brittle and difficult to debug - environment handling looks brittle and difficult to debug I do not like the current state of this package. The vast amount of vendored code is troubling. The upstream appears abandoned. When it wasn't abandoned, a security fix took three months to integrate. The fact that passwords can be easily logged suggests no one serious has deployed this. Years without rebuilds (and frequent FTBFSs) suggest no one else cares about this package. At a minimum, the FTBFS needs to be fixed before we can support this package. (This looks to be in progress.) I would *really* prefer to see all the gl/ code patched out. I'd be happiest if we could find a solution for ceph to *not* use this library. So no ACK or NAK yet, I'm hoping someone has great ideas here that can avoid the question. [Bug 1781418] Re: User not being initialized correctly on login
I don't know why this happens, but seems to be something broken by the way and update didn't fix anything in my case. There are still 2 calls to 'setgroups(0, NULL)', one for libpam-kwallet and another for pam_kwallet5 after my user and group are already set. Of course, this drops all supplementary groups. [Bug 1800277] Re: "chmod u-w ~/.ICEauthority" breaks login
** Description changed: = Problem = It is too easy to make a system unusable. + + https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gdm/issues/438 = Examples The following commands will all cause subsequent graphical logins to fail: == User is returned to login screen == - chmod 400 ~/.ICEauthority - rm ~/.ICEauthority In this scenario, the user is returned to the login screen with no indication of what went wrong. == Session "dead" == - chmod 444 ~/.cache - chmod 000 ~/.config - chmod 444 ~ - chmod 000 ~ In this scenario, the system just freezes: the cursor is unresponsive and users will be reaching for the power button. = Observation = These scenarios would all be caused by human error. However, clearly it is possible for the system to detect such issues and either alert the user to the problem or simply just fix the problem. This does not happen in Ubuntu 18.04 LTS though. = Idea = Have the display manager call a utility prior to executing the users preferred session. This utility -- which could be a simple shell script I think ("friendly-session-fixer" maybe? :) -- would do one or both of the following: - Perform checks for the issues outlined above warn the user graphically if any are found. - Fix any issues found to allow the user to login. However they are treated, all issues should also be logged in the journal (could be the user journal, but the system journal may be best to allow admins to spot such issues being detected more easily?) = Rationale = 1) All the problems above, although user-generated, are: - trivially fixable. - potentially very hard / impossible for a naeve user to debug and resolve. 2) By handling such errors, users won't have a bad experience of Linux if they inadvertently perturb a critical file. 3) Users will not need to resort to a re-install (which I can imagine some may have to given the current behaviour). = Ideas for further checks = - Check to ensure key files exist and if not, copy them in from /etc/skel/, etc. - Check to ensure users home directory is owned by them and not root, etc. - If the home partition / disk is 100% full, the script could logrotate and compress the contents of ~/.cache/ ? = Notes = You could argue that the session managers themselves should deal with these issues. In some cases that may be a fair comment. However, by having a single central check/fix script, the problems can be handled centrally without the issue whereby some session managers tolerate certain scenarios whereas others don't. - --- + --- ApportVersion: 2.20.9-0ubuntu7 Architecture: amd64 CurrentDesktop: ubuntu:GNOME DistroRelease: Ubuntu 18.04 InstallationDate: Installed on 2018-10-29 (0 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 18.04 LTS "Bionic Beaver" - Release amd64 (20180426) Package: gdm3 3.28.0-0ubuntu1 PackageArchitecture: amd64 ProcEnviron: - TERM=xterm-256color - PATH=(custom, no user) - XDG_RUNTIME_DIR= - LANG=en_GB.UTF-8 - SHELL=/bin/bash + TERM=xterm-256color + PATH=(custom, no user) + XDG_RUNTIME_DIR= + LANG=en_GB.UTF-8 + SHELL=/bin/bash ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 4.15.0-20.21-generic 4.15.17 Tags: bionic Uname: Linux 4.15.0-20-generic x86_64 UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) UserGroups: adm cdrom dip lpadmin plugdev sambashare sudo _MarkForUpload: True -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1800277 Title: "chmod u-w ~/.ICEauthority" breaks login To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm3/+bug/1800277/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1799007] Re: [System76 Oryx Pro] no sound after 18.10 upgrade
Tessa, I think these two things might be related... 1. Pop!OS doesn't like pulseaudio: UnreportableReason: This is not an official Pop!_OS package. Please remove any third party package and try again. 2. You have two sound servers and should only have one: Pulseaudio: Installed - Yes (/usr/bin/pulseaudio) Running - Yes Jack: Installed - Yes (/usr/bin/jackd) Running - No It sounds like System76's Pop!OS ships with jackd and they don't want you using pulseaudio. Certainly having both installed I would expect one of them might fail to access the sound hardware. This also means I am not sure the correct way to fix this other than it sounds like pulseaudio shouldn't be installed at all in Pop!OS. Suggested quick fix: Uninstall either your jackd packages, OR your pulseaudio packages. Fully clean fix: Reinstall Ubuntu from scratch, downloading it from here: http://releases.ubuntu.com/18.10/ ** Changed in: pulseaudio (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Opinion -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1799007 Title: [System76 Oryx Pro] no sound after 18.10 upgrade To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/1799007/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1754864] Re: Flatpak related refs are not installed when using GNOME Software on Ubuntu 18.04
The good news is that this now correctly installs themes when installing an app. Unfortunately for me test "2.4 Update an app in GNOME Software" from the flatpak test plan [0], fails for me with the package from proposed. After reverting to an older commit hash, then refreshing gnome-software it shows the update. But when I click "Update" the UI shows progress, hides the item and then it reappears again. Furthermore using the CLI you can see that the package hasn't been updated. So this change appears to be breaking an update. When running from the console I get "01:38:32:0760 Gs tried overwriting org.gnome.Recipes.desktop key flatpak::Commit from 6d5f7c35ff1f3fd449b2789324843a89140257bb3cdca468f83a65162b177fa0 to 1ac37481845c65857a64e8c0680bae137b0b56faaf6f11f3f0d415a3205bc1c2" and if i run in verbose mode I get this https://pastebin.ubuntu.com/p/r8pWhpmcG7/ Note flipping back to 3.28.1-0ubuntu4.18.04.4 it works again. [Bug 1774994] Re: Laptop wakes up immediately after suspend or hibernation
@Ole and @Feng. The normal methodology of `echo XHC > /proc/acpi/wakeup` had no effect whether `enabled` or `disabled`. By default `enabled` and all others are `disabled`. I also have `tlp` defaults which is probably USB_AUTOSUSPEND. I could go into console mode and type `pm_suspend` (it's set to deep / mem, if you set it to freeze all heck breaks loose). At this point I can see 5 or 6 repetitions of three line groups stating "USB 1-1, Port 2 does it have a bad cable?" Indeed there could be a cheap dollar store cable or Y cable from China with data / power only that went flaky on me. With the script I posted everything works reliably now although I suspect Resume takes a couple of seconds longer than necessary as I see `journalctl` spammed with every single USB device being unbound (powered off) and rebound (powered on). I've only tested with `4.14.78` so far because life is busy with other things... I'll try to keep you posted and try other options that you've mentioned and report back.
