[Bug 1852047] [NEW] [Bionic][Regression] Disabling EPT results in KVM guests that won't start

2019-11-10 Thread Tyler Hicks
Public bug reported:

Starting with 4.15.0-68.77, currently in bionic-proposed, I can no
longer launch VMs when I disable EPT support in the kvm_intel module.
This works fine under 4.15.0-66.75 from bionic-security.

 ubuntu@vought:~$ cat /proc/version_signature
 Ubuntu 4.15.0-68.77-generic 4.15.18
 ubuntu@vought:~$ sudo rmmod kvm_intel
 ubuntu@vought:~$ sudo modprobe kvm_intel ept=0
 ubuntu@vought:~$ cat /sys/module/kvm_intel/parameters/ept
 N
 ubuntu@vought:~$ virsh start --console l1
 Domain l1 started
 Connected to domain l1
 Escape character is ^]

Under 4.15.0-66.75, I see full console output from the guest and reach a
login prompt. Under 4.15.0-68.77, I see no output and the VM is
unresponsive. I see nothing of use in /var/log/libvirt/qemu/l1.log.

I see this on the following system:

[Bug 1849720] Re: KVM with e1000e and WinGuest Host OS on kernel 5.3 (ok with 5.0)

2019-11-10 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
@Kernel Team - this has enough affected people that I'd rate this at least high
severity.
Unfortunately none of "us" could reproduce it on our side yet to bisect on our
own.
As you see above affected users were so kind to test mainline kernels and
identified 5.2.21-050221 - 5.3.0-050300 already. Do you have an automation to
help user-bisecting by providing such kernels like the mainline kernels so that
- if we continue to be unable to repro on our side - we could have the users
here test the bisect steps for us?

@Zach - thank you so much for your tests.
Have you by any chance tried 5.4 [1] as well, maybe there is hope that a fix
already exists and only needs to be backported?

If so please state it here and mark the bug on the qemu task invalid and
unassign yourself as it seems much more a kernel issue right now.
Or did you have combinations left to try?

[Bug 1834771] Re: No HDMI-audio after kernel 4.15.-0.50

2019-11-10 Thread Rolando Gorgs
All affected users I found in forums so far reported that they have
amdgpu in use.

I don't know if nouveau and radeon drivers have the same problem or not.
So as you already wrote in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1834771/comments/20
the root problem seems to be that amdgpu (and maybe also other drivers)
doesn't set the eld_valid flag to 1, when a monitor is connected.

I have absolutely no idea how to handle this - where to file a bug for
such driver problems. But as long as we cannot assume that eld_valid is
correctly set, you better should not rely on it.

I would very much appreciate such a new patch.

[Bug 1852041] [NEW] ubiquity grub-install fails with /boot on RAID, ubiquity does not install mdadm

2019-11-10 Thread Jim At Your Service
Public bug reported:

With Ubuntu 18.04

Ubiquity installer should install mdadm before running grub-install if
/boot is on a RAID disk.

There have been multiple bug reports filed over the years against
grub-installer.
The grub-installer is fine. To support /boot on RAID, mdadm should be
pre-installed.

Various recipes explain to work-around the issue just drop to a shell
after the installer complains, and chroot to the target, and install
mdadm, then do grub-install. Not so easy.

In my case, I have a ubiquty/success_command that has to run, and the
workaround requires
allowing ubiquity to fail, and so the success_command never happens, nor does
any final cleanup.

The workaround I used was to to hack on the live-CD, which must be done after
boot,
or in my case remains persistent because I made a persistent live-CD using
mkusb.

vi /usr/share/grub-installer/grub-installer
# near line 647 change from
apt-install $grub_package || exit_code=$?
# change to
# 13.0.6.17.15-t10 jimays Hack to make sure mdadm is installed so
grub-install will succeed with RAID.
apt-install -y mdadm $grub_package || exit_code=$?

And then ubiquity succeeds and grub installs with /boot on /dev/md1.
I am not sure where the actual proper place to install mdadm is
or what the proper test would be to see if it is actually needed.

[Bug 1852035] [NEW] Cannot use full resolution (2560x1440) of Dell U2715H

2019-11-10 Thread Bryon Nevis
Public bug reported:

While using Ubuntu 19.10 with either MATE or GNOME, I can use only
1920x1080 resolution instead of the full 2560x1440. If extra pixels are

are not visible. Reproduced on Raspberry Pi 4 with 3GB max workaround.

[Bug 1851749] Re: Frequently getting thermal warnings and cpu throttling messages in syslog

2019-11-10 Thread Alex Murray
Lenovo upstream are aware of the issue and are looking to resolve it in
the BIOS for various models -

https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Other-Linux-Discussions/X1C6-T480s-low-
cTDP-and-trip-temperature-in-Linux/m-p/4513821/highlight/true#M13563

https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Other-Linux-Discussions/X1C6-T480s-low-
cTDP-and-trip-temperature-in-Linux/m-p/4534109/highlight/true#M13637

throttled is not a great solution since this requires writing to MSRs
which means users have to disable Secure Boot to use it - instead it is
best to wait for the official solution from Lenovo IMO.

[Bug 1852025] [NEW] [TOSHIBA NB515, Realtek ALC269VB, Speaker, Internal] volume slider problem

2019-11-10 Thread Ivan Baldo
Public bug reported:

Everytime I boot there is no sound.
With QasMixer I am able to fix it by selecting hw:0 (HDA Intel) and increasing
the second slider from bottom to top, that slider says "auriculares" in spanish
which is "headphones".
I am not using headphones though and I didn't found any other way of increasing
that slider in the standard programs that come installed by default in Ubuntu
19.10 (and many other older releases).

[Bug 1852022] [NEW] casper's postponing of snap refresh broken by switch to busybox date

2019-11-10 Thread Michael Hudson-Doyle
Public bug reported:

Booting the latest focal live server daily gets us this:

Begin: Disabling snap refresh... ... date: unrecognized option
'--iso-8601=seconds'
BusyBox v1.30.1 (Ubuntu 1:1.30.1-4ubuntu5) multi-call binary.

Usage: date [OPTIONS] [+FMT] [TIME]

Display time (using +FMT), or set time

[-s,--set] TIME Set time to TIME
-u,--utcWork in UTC (don't convert to local time)
-R,--rfc-2822 Output RFC-2822 compliant date string
-I[SPEC]Output ISO-8601 compliant date string
SPEC='date' (default) for date only,
'hours', 'minutes', or 'seconds' for date and
time to the indicated precision
-r,--reference FILE Display last modification time of FILE
-d,--date TIME Display TIME, not 'now'
-D FMT Use FMT for -d TIME conversion

Recognized TIME formats:
hh:mm[:ss]
[.]MM.DD-hh:mm[:ss]
-MM-DD hh:mm[:ss]
[YY]YY]MM]DD]hh]mm[.ss]
'date TIME' form accepts MMDDhhmm[[YY]YY][.ss] instead
done.

[Bug 1851518] Re: [950SBE/951SBE, Realtek ALC298, Speaker, Internal] No sound on internal speakers, very very quiet on headphones

2019-11-10 Thread Martin S
Made a little progress: headphones work with
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf:
options snd-hda-intel model=mono-speakers

Volume is loud and clear, in stereo!

alsa-info.sh output is attached with coefficients. Headphones were not
plugged in at that time to keep the diffs to a minimum.

[Bug 1847892] Re: large performance regression (~30-40%) in wifi with 19.10 / 5.3 kernel

2019-11-10 Thread arQon
Had the affected machine in here (i.e. "where the router is") for other
reasons, so I was able to check those conditions too. As expected, it's
a power / antenna / etc issue:

Linux 5.3.0-19-generic #20-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 18 09:04:39 UTC 2019 x86_64
Fri 08-Nov-19 03:29
sent 459,277,171 bytes received 35 bytes 7,467,922.05 bytes/sec

iwlist scan, WHILE the rsync was running (so it shouldn't be power-saving at
all) with the router 6' away with clear LOS showed:
Frequency:2.422 GHz (Channel 3)
Quality=62/70  Signal level=-48 dBm

Looking at 1795116, I used to get 70/70 at -32 dBm upstairs and through half a
dozen walls, so obviously this is a significant drop in link quality given the
hugely better conditions.
Compared to 4.15.0-36 - which, bear in mind was one of the BROKEN kernels, the
performance is 7,467,922 / 11,167,414, or 66.9% of what it should be in that
scenario.

The good news is, that difference suggests it's at least not a simple
merge regression of 1795116. The bad news is, of course, that it'll need
a new round of investigation track down.

As I've said, I'm willing to set things up to help out, but I'm still
waiting for you to provide me with the ACTUAL Ubuntu kernel tree to
bisect against. In the meantime, I'll probaby try a couple of the
mainline builds since I can just dpkg those, but with no way to map the
working Ubuntu ones to the mainline tree I'll never have a baseline to
compare against in case something stupid has happened like one of the
antenna connectors has become disconnected or etc.

[Bug 1852018] [NEW] Audio Stops Playing Briefly When Emptying Trash

2019-11-10 Thread Kashif Khan
Public bug reported:

I am running Ubuntu 19.10 and encountered this issue. I had a podcast
playing in the background on Firefox v. 70.0.1 and I was deleting some
files. I then proceeded to empty the trash and saw that the audio stops
briefly till the "Empty all items from Trash?" prompt shows up.

I was able to duplicate this many times and it even occurred with audio
on Chrome.

The expected way for things to work would be the audio keeps on playing,
if I just empty the trash.

[Bug 1852016] [NEW] Applications delayed on launch

2019-11-10 Thread Sebastian
Public bug reported:

Hello,

i am unsure if this is really a problem with dbus but my first research
showed it could be related to dbus.

1.)
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description:Ubuntu 19.10
Release:19.10
Codename: eoan

Ubuntu Budgie on T460 with 256GB SSD and 16GB RAM

2.)
dbus:
  Installed: 1.12.14-1ubuntu2
  Candidate: 1.12.14-1ubuntu2
  Version table:
 *** 1.12.14-1ubuntu2 500
500 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu eoan/main amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

3.) I've expected just "normal" loading applications

4.) Some applications are delayed at startup. The application will take
around 30s to launch, but afterwards it just runs fine. Affected
application I found so far are KeepassXC, Filezilla and OnlyOffice
Desktop-Editor. From strace I saw this applications are stopping (for
about 20-30s) at this point:

connect(12, {sa_family=AF_UNIX, sun_path="/run/user/1000/bus"}, 110) = 0

read(14, "\1\0\0\0\0\0\0\0", 16)= 8
poll([{fd=14, events=POLLIN}], 1, 25000

During my first research I found this following to topics related to the issue:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1184774/some-applications-on-ubuntu-19-10-very-slow-to-start

This Stackoverflow topic links to the archlinux forum:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=230036

I can confirm that running the delayed applications with "dbus-launch
--exit-with-session application" or by running it as root they are all
starting without any delay.

Thanks for your help! Let me know if you need any further information.

Best Regards,
Sebastian

[Bug 1852015] [NEW] System froze after resume from suspend

2019-11-10 Thread jnns
Public bug reported:

I was resuming from suspend and suffering from a non-responsive touchpad
as described in [1] so I reconnected the mouse driver using

 echo -n "none" | sudo tee /sys/devices/platform/i8042/serio1/drvctl;
sleep 1; echo -n "reconnect" | sudo tee
/sys/devices/platform/i8042/serio1/drvctl

several times until the mouse worked again. I then switched to Firefox and
switched between tabs using a keyboard shortcut when suddenly the system froze
completely. I couldn't even switch to a VT using CTRL-ALT-Fx. Using the
MagicSysReg keys I could make force the laptop to reboot.

[Bug 1852012] [NEW] The fresh installation begins (both USB and CD) but crashes after informing User and Password. Some times copies a little files and some times copies almost a half of the progress

2019-11-10 Thread Luiz Alberto Mariano
Public bug reported:

I have been upgrading versions from a long time. But after upgrading to 19.10,
a new NVIDIA upgrade were available. And I took it.
After a restart, I got a LOGIN LOOP and could not open graphic screen again.
So I backup my files and tried a fresh instalation. For both 19.10 and 18.04
available for download. Both of them crashes with errno 5. Says that could not
read files from USB/DVD or could not write files to disk. But I can install an
old version I have here, Ubuntu 10.04 and it works fine.

[Bug 1852010] [NEW] Progress bar in the XFCE panel generates high CPU usage

2019-11-10 Thread Yønn
Public bug reported:

Using GTK3 progress bars with either Radiance or Ambiance Themes generates high
CPU usage which is weird.
To reproduce the effect, I suggest to use xfce4-genmon-plugin calling a simple
script with just the two following lines:

echo "10%"
#echo "10"

And to alternatively toggle the comment while monitoring CPU load. A clear
offset should appear.
Using any other GTK3 theme do not generate this increase of CPU usage.

[Bug 1840640] Re: sync_file_range fails in nspawn containers on arm, ppc

2019-11-10 Thread Steve Dodd
OK, so my kernel didn't have seccomp support compiled in and systemd
just silently fails to set seccomp filters in that case.

Have now reproduced the bug on an armhf disco VM, and verified that the
package in proposed, 240-6ubuntu5.8 fixes it.

[Bug 1852001] Re: Xorg freeze on high disk or cpu load or random

2019-11-10 Thread JPT
I exactly once got a GPU HANG. Wasn't able to fetch the logs though and
did not get one again:

14:11:58 i915 :00:02.0: GPU HANG: ecode 9:0:0x, hang on rcs0
14:11:58 GPU hangs can indicate a bug anywhere in the entire gfx stack,
including userspace.
14:11:58 Please file a _new_ bug report on bugs.freedesktop.org against DRI ->
DRM/Intel
14:11:58 drm/i915 developers can then reassign to the right component if it's
not a kernel issue.
14:11:58 The gpu crash dump is required to analyze gpu hangs, so please always
attach it.
14:11:58 GPU crash dump saved to /sys/class/drm/card0/error
14:11:58 i915 :00:02.0: Resetting rcs0 for hang on rcs0

and this problem happens regardless if xserver-xorg-video-intel is installed or
not.
but maybe the GPU hang log occurs only if the Intel driver is installed?

[Bug 1852002] [NEW] Desktop frozen for 30 seconds after Nvidia driver crash

2019-11-10 Thread Mathieu Tarral via ubuntu-bugs
Public bug reported:

Hi,

I just experienced a frozen desktop, where I could barely move the
mouse, for maybe 30 seconds or more.

When the desktop recovered, I looked at dmesg logs to find these lines:

[  461.937702] NVRM: GPU at PCI::01:00:
GPU-734060ac-116d-fbbb-1553-d84896b846a4

. MMU Fault: ENGINE HOST0 HUBCLIENT_HOST_CPU faulted @ 0x1_0036d000.
Fault is of type FAULT_PTE ACCESS_TYPE_VIRT_READ

It looks like a fault from the Nvidia driver.
I'm using the tested one "nvidia-driver-435", installed via the GUI tool.

Could you report this to Nvidia please ?

Thanks

[Bug 1849069] Re: Wrong Clipboard Item Promoted

2019-11-10 Thread Lonnie Lee Best
** Description changed:

I don't have the exact steps to reproduce this behavior, but any long-
time user of clip-it knows VERY well what I'm about to say it true.

Too often, when you select (from clipit) a previously copied item from
the list it provides, it promote the wrong item to your computer's
clipboard memory (AND NOT THE ITEM YOU SELECTED).

I've been putting up with this BUG for years now, I'm finally reporting
it and hoping that someone will go into that code and figure out why
  this annoying behavior it occurring.

I'm quite sure you can reproduce this behavior by simply having a 10
- minute session of copying and pasting various text. After you copied 10
- or so items, try to use clip it to bring an item you copied about 5 or
- 10 turns back. You find that the wrong item gets put in to clipboard
- memory and you'll have to do select from clip-it twice before it
- retrieves the item you selected actually selected the first time.

+ selected both times.

I hope some kind soul combs through the code and figures out why this
happens. This is one of those bugs that you just put up with hoping it
finally gets fixed, but like I said, I've been enduring this for YEARS,
  and it never gets fixed.
