[Bug 1655051] Re: charm push does not accept merge revsions

2017-01-09 Thread Aaron Bentley
This is actually a real regression. 2.2.0-0ubuntu1~ubuntu16.04.1~ppa2
from the juju/stable PPA exhibits the bug, but charm 2.1.1-0ubuntu1 does
not.

[Bug 1655051] [NEW] charm push does not accept merge revsions

2017-01-09 Thread Aaron Bentley
Public bug reported:

charm push does not accept revisions produced by bzr merge. It complains:
ERROR cannot parse bzr log: cannot parse bzr log entry: invalid revision number
"80 [merge]"

This persists even if a second, non merge commit is made. I.e. it
cannot be recovered without changing commit history.

This is a regression in the sense that the old publication method (just
pushing to Launchpad) had no problem with merge commits.

[Bug 1636881] [NEW] Container names use series adjectives

2016-10-26 Thread Aaron Bentley
Public bug reported:

$ lxc launch ubuntu-xenial

Wait! I don't want a Hardy Heron container, I want a Xenial container.
$ lxc exec hardy-rodent bash

Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description:Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS

[Bug 1236490] Re: Container has no networking

2013-10-07 Thread Aaron Bentley
Stephane Graber explains:
bug 1236490 very much looks like isc-dhcp-* is out of date in your container
a kernel change in 3.10 caused veth devices to do udp offloading which wasn't
supported by the isc-dhcp we shipped in precise, quantal and raring
so I SRUed the fix a couple months back to all supported releases. If that's
the problem you're having, just chroot into /var/lib/lxc/container/rootfs and
do an apt-get update apt-get install isc-dhcp-common isc-dhcp-client
if that updates isc-dhcp, then there's a good chance the next boot of that
container will work
you'll need to do that to all affected containers and if you have an old
container cache in /var/cache/lxc then also update that one or flush it so it
gets re-created on the next lxc-create

Okay, it looks like sudo was the cause. When I ran upgrade-manager

done that by accident the first time (comment #8).

[Bug 1223894] Re: Segfault trying to upgrade to saucy from raring

2013-09-11 Thread Aaron Bentley
The tarball was there, plus a bunch of files. Extracting the files
appeared to complete successfully.

I renamed ubuntu-release-upgrader-vijh2f to asdf and re-ran update-
manager -d. It crashed at the same point, slightly differently:

$ sudo update-manager -d
Checking for a new Ubuntu release
authenticate 'saucy.tar.gz' against 'saucy.tar.gz.gpg'
extracting 'saucy.tar.gz'
Real-time signal 0

I diffed the old directory against the new one, to see if the second extraction
had completed successfully:
l# diff . ../asdf -r
diff: ./demoted.cfg: Too many levels of symbolic links
diff: ../asdf/demoted.cfg: Too many levels of symbolic links
diff: ./DistUpgrade: recursive directory loop
Binary files ./DistUpgradeApport.pyc and ../asdf/DistUpgradeApport.pyc differ
Binary files ./DistUpgradeAufs.pyc and ../asdf/DistUpgradeAufs.pyc differ
Binary files ./DistUpgradeConfigParser.pyc and
../asdf/DistUpgradeConfigParser.pyc differ
Binary files ./DistUpgradeGettext.pyc and ../asdf/DistUpgradeGettext.pyc differ
Binary files ./DistUpgradeMain.pyc and ../asdf/DistUpgradeMain.pyc differ
Binary files ./DistUpgradeVersion.pyc and ../asdf/DistUpgradeVersion.pyc differ
Binary files ./DistUpgradeViewGtk3.pyc and ../asdf/DistUpgradeViewGtk3.pyc
differ
Binary files ./DistUpgradeView.pyc and ../asdf/DistUpgradeView.pyc differ
Binary files ./__init__.pyc and ../asdf/__init__.pyc differ
Binary files ./SimpleGtk3builderApp.pyc and ../asdf/SimpleGtk3builderApp.pyc
differ
Binary files ./trustdb.gpg and ../asdf/trustdb.gpg differ

Since the tarball didn't include any pyc files, I deduce that the
tarball was completely extracted and the crash happened when trying to
run or compile the extracted files.

[Bug 1047959] Re: wifi login broken in Quantal

2012-09-18 Thread Aaron Bentley
From my POV, the bug has not been fixed.

1. AIUI, it's still trying to connect to arbitrary connections (i.e.
BEER), instead of letting the user decide which connection to use.

2. The new error message, something like Insufficient privileges to
add/activate connection doesn't give the user any idea how to fix the
problem

3. There is inconsistency about passwords. The fact that BEER prompts
me for a password leads me to expect that if I choose a different
network, I would be prompted for a password, not get an error.

I suspect that reproducing the problem requires that a space follows
the apostrophe.

You can see that it truncated Lynne's pix to Lynne's, which
happens at a space following the apostrophe. Your examples do not
contain spaces, so the would not have been truncated.

At the time I tested this, I was running Shotwell built from
 master, sha 49d065ea345941d4ef52f985f323ab726268c191.

Note that this is a bug on the Ubuntu package. I don't know whether
it affects master or not.

[Bug 1046461] Re: [UIFe] UOA integration needs to support multiple accounts

2012-09-11 Thread Aaron Bentley
Alberto, I find that it is uncommon that the Oauth token has expired. I
have never been prompted to login on the website before publishing, so
clicking the login button seems pointless.

If the OAuth web site is truly a pop-up, I can see the problem with
automatically launching it, since it would get in the way and steal
focus. I think this could be fixed by either

- embedding the web site in the form, so that it doesn't steal focus or
block the UI. That way, you can start loading the web site as soon as
the the user selects publish.

- detect whether the OAuth token has not expired, and skip the login
step.

[Bug 1048639] [NEW] Cannot launch external editor for photos in directories with apostrophe

2012-09-10 Thread Aaron Bentley
Public bug reported:

This may be related to Bug #1048454

I was unable to edit a photo using Open with External Editor. Instead
of loading /home/abentley/Pictures/Old family photos/Lynne's
pix/image0029.jpg, it launched The Gimp, which said:

Opening '/home/abentley/Pictures/Old family photos/Lynne's' failed: No such
file or directory
Calling error for procedure 'file-jpeg-load':
Could not open '/home/abentley/pix/image0029_modified.jpg' for reading: No such
file or directory
Opening '/home/abentley/pix/image0029_modified.jpg' failed: Could not open
'/home/abentley/pix/image0029_modified.jpg' for reading: No such file or
directory

When I changed the external editor to Image Viewer, it said: The
given locations contain no images.

[Bug 1048454] Re: Cannot open files whose paths contain apostrophes

2012-09-10 Thread Aaron Bentley
** Summary changed:

- Cannot open files in directories containing apostrophes
+ Cannot open files whose paths contain apostrophes

** Description changed:

When the containing directory name contains an apostrophe, launching a
file in either the default or a specific viewer fails.

For example, I have photos in a directory whose full path is
  /media/abentley/ED1T/Pictures/2012/Trisha's 40th birthday. Attempting
to launch the file by double-clicking launches Gnome Image Viewer, which
errors with The given locations contain no images.

Launching the file in Firefox attempts to load the URL
  file:///media/abentley/ED1T/Pictures/2012/Trisha%27s.

Launching the file in Chromium attempts to load the URL
  file:///media/abentley/ED1T/Pictures/2012/Trisha's
+
+ The same problem happens if the filename, itself, contains an
+ apostrophe. Launching /home/abentley/Music/lossy-copies/Core/Graydon
+ James and the Young Novelists/In the Year You Were Born/01-I Was a Young
+ Man's Son.ogg starts up Totem, which says An error occurred: Location
+ not found.

[Bug 1047959] [NEW] wifi login broken in Quantal

2012-09-08 Thread Aaron Bentley
Public bug reported:

When lightdm starts up, it prompts me to enter the password for the WiFi
network BEER, but this is not my network, and I don't have credentials
for it.

When I attempt to select a correct network, bentley5, I get the error
message (32) Not authorized to control networking.

Of course, when I start a Unity session, it automatically logs me into
bentley5 (as it did under precise).

[Bug 1048001] [NEW] Shotwell gives no indication how to upload to facebook, Picasa, etc on Quantal

2012-09-08 Thread Aaron Bentley
Public bug reported:

In Quntal, you are required to set up an online account in order to
use Facebook and Picasa integration, but there's no indication of this
in the UI-- the options simply aren't shown.

This was more confusing for me, because I *did* have Facebook and Google
Talk set up in Online Accounts. But these were imported from Precise
and were shown as Jabber account. Presumably not suitable, but this
was not immediately obvious.

This could be solved by showing the Facebook and Picasa options, but
instead of displaying the UI, directing the user to create suitable
accounts. Perhaps with a button to display the Online accounts
dialog. It could also be solved by showing the options greyed-out, with
mouseover text explaining how to enable them.

[Bug 961442] Re: hud-service uses too much CPU time

2012-03-28 Thread Aaron Bentley
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 938584 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/938584

I don't think this is a duplicate of bug #938584, because the reporter
said When I stop typing this CPU consumption continues on for several
seconds afterwards., implying that it does stop consuming CPU after
several seconds.

My symptom was that hud-service continues to use significant CPU even
when the HUD is not in use.

[Bug 967119] [NEW] Compiz settings lost

2012-03-28 Thread Aaron Bentley
Public bug reported:

Today, I found that my compiz settings were lost and appear to be reset to
defaults. This included
- Icon size: 32
- Mouse button bindings: I use the left and right buttons on my mouse wheel
to switch workspaces
- Workspace configuration: My work spaces are laid out horizontally, so I only
need left + right movement to switch workspaces
- Key bindings: I use Win + arrow for switching workspaces, Win + alt for
moving apps

[Bug 961442] [NEW] hud-service uses too much CPU time

2012-03-21 Thread Aaron Bentley
Public bug reported:

hud-service is consistently taking 10% of CPU time, which is more than
compiz. This is a high proportion of a reasonably beefy machine (i7
quad-core 1.87-3.2 GHz). I have used the HUD in this session, but it
this CPU time is being spent even when the HUD is not actually in use.

[Bug 955077] [NEW] bluetooth mouse disabled during upgrades

2012-03-14 Thread Aaron Bentley
Public bug reported:

When I use update-manager, very frequently my bluetooth mouse is
disabled partway through the process, and reactivated near the end of
the process. This is a minor annoyance for me since I also have a
touchpad, but could be significant for a user with no other pointing
device.

I suspect this is some sort of deferred processing during bluetooth
upgrades, but since the lack of bluetooth can be problematic, I suggest
that deferred processing is not appropriate in this case.

[Bug 767574] Re: Unity does not allow completely dragging windows to secondary(vertical) screen

2011-10-20 Thread Aaron Bentley
Daniel, the non-standard setting I have is my launcher icons are 32x32.

In Oneiric, the issue is improved for me, but not completely fixed. For
some applications, I can drag them smoothly from the top to the bottom.
For others, I must drag them quickly, or their title bar gets stuck at
the bottom of the top monitor. In my current session, xchat-gnome tends
to get stuck, but firefox is moves freely. I moved xchat-gnome first,
so that may be the cause. It's not at all clear to me.

Hello, that's a feature not a bug. Without the non-free dropboxd,

In fact, for this purpose, it would have been better if there was no
official Ubuntu dropbox package, since then the upgrade would have
happened later.

Unfortunately, the postinst failed because the distribution upgrade process
disabled my wifi. (Wifi was working again after reboot.) So for at least some
systems, this is guaranteed to end badly.

I installed Gnome Activity Journal on natty and immediately tried to use
it. Of course, it failed due to the missing extension. I can
understand not wanting to fix the upgrade case, but the fresh install
case looks pretty bad.

I just updated and rebooted my system, and the issue seems to persist.
However, it seems to be related to upper/lower monitors, not
primary/secondary monitors. When two monitors are configured as
upper/lower, dragging the window to the far right on the lower monitor
causes it to maximize on the upper monitor.

[Bug 760235] Re: cannot drag window to lower monitor via title bar

2011-04-14 Thread Aaron Bentley
I don't think the problem has anything to do with the size of the
monitors. It's a problem dragging from an upper monitor to a lower one.
That is, dragging a window down, past the bottom of the upper monitor
and the top of the lower monitor.

The problem only shows when dragging the window by its title bar, and
does not show when dragging the window up from the bottom monitor.

[Bug 760235] Re: cannot drag window to lower monitor via title bar

2011-04-14 Thread Aaron Bentley
Hmm, now I'm noticing an additional condition: the problem seems to only
happen if some part of the window would be off-screen on the right side
of the lower monitor. If I move the window to the left, it unsnaps
when none of it is off-screen to the right.

Perhaps it's relevant that the lower monitor is smaller, and positioned
so that its left-hand side is aligned with the left-hand side of the
upper monitor. So the lower-right corner is part of the virtual screen,
but not assigned to a monitor. I notice some analogous behaviour
dragging the window to the right. It seems like the title bar is
refusing to be dragged into unviewable portions of the virtual screen.

It would be a lot less confusing if this behaviour applied to the entire
window, not just the title bar. However, as I noted earlier, this
behaviour can be defeated by alt+dragging.
