[Bug 2059738] Re: Kernel 6.8 - Shutdown/Reboot hangs on Noble 24.04

2024-04-29 Thread Adrian Wilkins
Confirmed ; reboot ...

- Asked for elevation because of a process inhibiting shutdown
- This was cancelled
- I then got logged out of my session
- I logged in again and got prompted for a system program crash dump elevation
- This was provided but _then_ my system rebooted
- Same issue, unresponsive to power button until a long-press was completed
first

[Bug 2059738] Re: Kernel 6.8 - Shutdown/Reboot hangs on Noble 24.04

2024-04-29 Thread Adrian Wilkins
Seeing this on my T460s as well

Suspend (on lid close) ; the machine reaches the state where the lid
light and the light on the power button "throb" as they would with
22.04, but the machine will not resume from suspend in response to
keyboard events, mouse events, or a brief press to the power button.

Poweroff : the machine reaches a state where everything appears "off",
no lights, no screen activity etc, but the machine does not restart in
response to a brief press of the power button.

In both cases, a long-press of the power button is required. You can
tell this has "taken" when the lights on the hardwire ethernet port
blink briefly on release.

Then a normal brief press will restart the machine.

Both of these conditions happen reliably on lid close (suspend) or
poweroff (from menu or command). Going to test reboot now since this is
mentioned above.

[Bug 1951832] Re: xl2tpd "Can not find tunnel" in jammy

2022-05-04 Thread Adrian Wilkins
Testing performed :

- Using a config verified to be working on 20.04
- Enabled -proposed
- Updated and verified that component is now version 1.3.16-1ubuntu0.1
- Connected to my corporate VPN successfully where previously I could not
- (this config also worked for the PPA version published above by @racb)

[Bug 1951832] Re: xl2tpd "Can not find tunnel" in jammy

2022-04-28 Thread Adrian Wilkins
Can confirm that Robie's fix works.

2) Step by step repro instructions

Requirements : An L2TP VPN server (Windows Server)

- Install Ubuntu 22.04
- Install network-manager-l2tp-gnome (and requirements)
- Configure a new L2TP VPN connection for your server
(in my case, not sure if this detail is required)
  - Configure gateway address
  - Configure password auth
  - In the IPsec Options, enable IPsec tunnelling
  - Configure the PSK from your server
  - In the PPP Options, enable MSPPE, and disable MSCHAP (leaving MSCHAPv2 the
only auth option)

Open a window with `journalctl -ef` running to watch the logs.
Initiate the connection from nm-applet.

3) As someone definitely affected, and with a suitable corporate VPN
endpoint available, I'll be happy to test the proposed updates.

[Bug 1951832] Re: xl2tpd "Can not find tunnel" in jammy

2022-04-26 Thread Adrian Wilkins
More of a meta comment :

If Ubuntu wishes to be taken seriously as a professional workstation OS
(as I'm sure it will do, with an impending IPO next year), issues
blocking VPN connectivity - especially to the Usual Suspect endpoints
like L2TP (which will cover anyone using e.g. Azure for their corporate
VPN) - need to be considered far more important.

This issue was reported four months ago and will block Azure VPN
connections from 22.04 until it's fixed (in the absence of workarounds),
which means that many users would be unable to do their job, but has yet
to be marked with an importance other than "Undecided".

As an engineer who believes strongly that Linux has a place among his
co-workers, it gets increasingly hard to justify this to operations when
their compliance requirements (like connecting to VPNs) cannot be met
out of the box.

L2TP is, yes, a Microsoft thing. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't be
taking it seriously - quite the opposite, as that means it forms a
substantial minority of VPN endpoints out there.

Hackarounds like manually installing old package versions or alternative
VPN clients [1] do not inspire confidence.

I know that the maintainers are absolutely doing their best within the
constraints they are operating in, this comment is more directed at
Canonical, in the hope that they can understand this is a part of the
distro that needs to be tested and supported more rigorously.

[Bug 1969357] Re: Unity7 crashes on Jammy with 22.04's gnome-session version

2022-04-21 Thread Adrian Wilkins
Confirm (in KVM machines) that Unity works fine from gdm3 under Impish,
but a fresh VM of Jammy doesn't work with either lightdm or gdm for me.

I get to see a quick glimpse of the Unity desktop, then this fullscreen
splash error shows up

"Oh no! Something has gone wrong.

A problem has occurred and the system can't recover.
All extensions have been disabled as a precaution."

Since it refers to extensions, I presume this is a part of GNOME Shell.

However... if you use the keyboard shortcut to left-split the window
(ctrl-super-left) ... you can see the Unity desktop is running. (I first
tried ctrl-alt-t to summon a terminal above it but the window is always-
on-top, I saw it lose focus though.)

[Bug 1969357] Re: Unity7 crashes on Jammy with 22.04's gnome-session version

2022-04-20 Thread Adrian Wilkins
Is this a `gnome-session` issue? The source sayeth (@ gnome-
session/main.c:422)

/* From 3.14 GDM sets XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP. For compatibility with
 * older versions of GDM, other display managers, and startx,
 * set a fallback value if we don't find it set.
 */

There doesn't seem to be any other location in the code that sets
`XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP` and this code hasn't changed between the two
versions listed above.

Is this because of a change to `gdm` ? Does it work if you switch to
lightdm?

`gdm` sets this from the session definition, which is patched into
gnome-session by

debian/patches/ubuntu/ubuntu-sessions.patch

(the patch file has changed between revisions but mostly to remove a
community session)

gdm fetches this @ daemon/gdm-session.c:2612  get_session_desktop_names()

filename = g_strdup_printf ("%s.desktop", get_session_name (self));
g_debug ("GdmSession: getting desktop names for file '%s'", filename);
keyfile = load_key_file_for_file (self, filename, NULL, NULL);
if (keyfile != NULL) {
  gchar **names;

  names = g_key_file_get_string_list (keyfile,
G_KEY_FILE_DESKTOP_GROUP,
  "DesktopNames", NULL, NULL);

Can't see any obvious changes in GDM between Impish and Jammy that would
cause this just from looking at the diffs though.

2021-11-25 Thread Adrian Wilkins
Syslog from affected system.

- First action is to select the affected headset from the Bluetooth
applet

The first thing that happens is the coredum. Then the service restarts ;
this seems to be fast enough that the connection is still in progress,
you can see the audio endpoints being registered,

? because the state is lost this does not complete and the device
reports disconnection. *

- Second action is activation of a Bluetooth keyboard

This connects and functions correctly

- Third action is selecting the affected headset again

Same response. The keyboard is also disconnected but reconnects
automatically.

* this is not true : these endpoints are re-registered merely on
restarting the bluetooth service.

[Bug 1624320] Re: systemd-resolved appends 127.0.0.53 to resolv.conf alongside existing entries

2019-02-19 Thread Adrian Wilkins
My problem with systemd-resolved :

* My router hands out a nameserver (itself) via DNS
* When I'm inside my network, I want my router to resolve IP addresses for my
domain
* When I'm outside my network, I want the public DNS to resolve them

First lookup works fine! Then systemd-resolved (I guess) caches the
secondary lookup it's doing via public DNS servers and returns the
public IP address for the server. This is not what is desired, and
breaks a bunch of stuff (like SSH to my servers using names from inside
my network).

Never had this problem with dnsmasq, because it apparently respected my
network config and didn't do an end-run around the DNS servers it was
handed by DHCP.

[Bug 1689825] Re: gnome-keyring not unlocked on xenial when dbus-user-session is installed

2018-07-17 Thread Adrian Wilkins
Ran into this after installing dbus-user-session in order to support
systemd user services that raise notifiers via dbus.

Notifiers didn't arrive via my desktop so I presume it just creates a
whole other session somewhere and talks to that. My service worked (when
it was previously crashing because of lack of a dbus to talk to), but it
started an extra gnome-keyring-daemon (the dialog for that DID appear in
my desktop session), and then I had the slow-alt-T problem.

Ah well, I shall go back to running my bugwarrior sync manually until I
can find documentation of systemd user services that actually works...

[Bug 684393] Re: $PATH discrepency when ~/bin exists

2018-04-05 Thread Adrian Wilkins
> does NOT improve security at all

Reason why it does : all the other paths in PATH by default are root-
writeable only. If a personal ~/bin folder is at the front by default,
all it takes is for someone to exploit you is to e.g. get you to unpack
an archive in your HOME that has

a) the files you wanted and

also b) a ./bin folder containing a `cd` program, for example

Installing a persistent override of common system commands only requires
user-level access with your ~/bin at the front of PATH.

Yes, you still only need user-level access to add a line to someone's
bash profiles to add ~/bin (or any other folder) to the start of PATH.
But it's one more little thing to overcome. It might be the difference
between you getting pwned or not. Adding a line to the bash profile
elevates the difficulty from just tricking a user into plonking files on
the filesystem to editing them.

[Bug 1578193] Re: cannot load legacy-only plugin

2017-05-02 Thread Adrian Wilkins
> It appears that upstream 1.3.1+ plugin requires "Strong" secrets

The bug report referenced relates that the decision to not support PSK
(or IKEv1) in the StrongSwan NM plugin is a "political decision". In
2010.

It's still a dumb one. Even today in 2017 my IT dept has set up their
VPN with IKEv1 and an 18-char PSK. Which means I can't even use the
command-line version of StrongSwan because the "political decision" is
baked into the VPN daemon.

By all means make it impossible for your SERVER to have a stupid config,
but clients rarely have a choice over the setup they're connecting to.
Conversely the No.1 complaint I hear about StrongSwan server is that
it's hard to set up - I concur, having had to do it myself. But that's
by the by here.

This means there is currently _no_ NetworkManager VPN client for Ubuntu
that supports IKEv1 ; you have to resort to the Shrewsoft client, which
doesn't play well with other clients, doesn't play well with
NetworkManager or it's captive dnsmasq instance.

Is it useful to continue to use the output of a project that allows
"political decisions" to get in the way of actually being useful to the
greatest number of users?

I would argue that the choice of StrongSwan over LibreSwan here is
harming adoption of Ubuntu in the enterprise (presuming, that is, that
LibreSwan has no such political opinions baked into it and you can
actually use it's NM plugin to connect to most VPNs). If LibreSwan is
good enough for RedHat and the GNOME team maintain a NM plugin for it
(as they do), would that not be a better choice for Ubuntu?

[Bug 1235887] Re: nvidia-current isn't current

2016-11-19 Thread Adrian Wilkins
It's the GPUs that are considered legacy, not the drivers (304.132 was
released this year, in September)

The 304 driver is required to support older hardware models that have no
support in newer driver series. If you want the newer versions of Ubuntu
to support older hardware, a very common configuration amongst people
not tied into the buy-a-new-computer-to-get-a-new-OS habit, you need to
provide drivers for that hardware.

[Bug 1634802] Re: Could not insert module

2016-11-19 Thread Adrian Wilkins
I also have this problem (on the computer of my dear old mother, 250
miles away, so remote support through SSH.) so I'll be happy to lend
a hand if I can...

Upgraded her to 16.10 remotely via the command line because her 16.04
install developed the infinite login loop with a GLX error on starting X
as mentioned in #20

Now getting the mtrr_add problem instead.

She had no complaints with 304.131-0ubuntu3 (Xenial release version), so
whatever it is arrived in the 304.132 release, I think.

[Bug 1625828] Re: Enforced PSK length >= 20

2016-09-21 Thread Adrian Wilkins
I agree - but making it really inconvenient to use a common business VPN
configuration, however outdated and ill advised it may be, isn't doing
Ubuntu as a distro any favours.

I get that StrongSwan wants to maintain a reputation for, well,
strength, but I'd consider the best place to encourage strength is on
the server - make it inconvenient for admins to configure weak VPNs, and
easier to configure strong ones, rather than make it downright awkward
for clients to connect. That places the burden firmly in the court of
those people who can actually do something to change things, and doesn't
just create a duplicated problem across many, many clients, who suffer a
loss of productivity as a result.

The majority of outcomes from that scenario will be...

* "Dammit, this piece of hippy OSS software doesn't work, I'm going back
to Windows"
* Lots of fiddling around with config files or alternate VPN clients
* User contacts their network admin asking for changes and is told it's too
much trouble (because they'll have to distribute new config to every user)

... many users will not feel inclined to question their network admin
because they don't want to attract hassle or think it's futile, many
will not be able to persuade them to change their setup, leaving only a
small minority of cases where change will be affected in exchange for a
lot of lost productivity.

Anyway, I've said my piece, I accept that as the project maintainer your
decisions about what code goes into your repo are final, and I'm not
interested in having a huge argument.

Since we've established that strongswan is not the package for IKEv1,
perhaps Ubuntu should consider, like RedHat, offering libreswan, which
AFAIK does have a working NetworkManager plugin that will support IKEv1.
The lack of this feature is a focus of #1457078, so I'm going to close
this as Invalid.

[Bug 1457078] Re: L2TP client support for PSK removed from 15.04/15.10

2016-09-20 Thread Adrian Wilkins
This has frustrated me for a month or so... I can get onto my work VPN
via the ShrewSoft client (ike and ike-qtgui) but it's not integrated
with NetworkManager (and overwrites /etc/resolv.conf, interfering with
it).

You have to resort to manual configuration of the dnsmasq instance
created by NetworkManager in order to get it to play nice with managed
connections - turn off the DNS settings in the ShrewSoft client and add
them manually to dnsmasq to stop it overwriting /etc/resolv.conf

The manual config above may also work, but likewise, won't play nice
with other NetworkManager connections.

The NM plugin for StrongSwan has been updated to support PSK but I don't
know if this means it supports IKEv1... it imposes a 20 character
minimum, and of course, my network admin has configured a PSK shorter
than this, so I can't test it.

I agree with the sentiments expressed above that removing support for an
exceedingly common (if not best-practice) VPN configuration does not
create the best impression of Ubuntu. RedHat has retained support via
the NetworkManager-libreswan plugin as described in the page below.

https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-
US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/7/html/Security_Guide/sec-
Securing_Virtual_Private_Networks.html

Sadly, Debian still has libreswan in the "experimental" section.

[Bug 1625828] [NEW] Enforced PSK length >= 20

2016-09-20 Thread Adrian Wilkins
Public bug reported:

As per #1578193, the NetworkManager package has been broken until
recently fixed in version 1.4.0

Installed the PPA packages from Ryan Harper. This seems to restore NM
support. Hooray!

However, the code enforces a PSK length of 20 or greater when using PSK
+ XAuth. It's not even clear if the code supports IKEv1 via the GUI.

The only other package in the central repo with support for IKEv1 now
that OpenSwan (or LibreSwan?) has been replaced is ShrewSoft VPN client
(ike and ike-qtgui) - which does not integrate with NetworkManager
(instead, it overwrites /etc/resolv.conf and actively interferes with
it).

As I understand it, the StrongSwan team have a policy of "encouraging"
proper, secure VPN configuration, and that weak PSKs are not something
they consider /de rigeur/. Both the GUI and backend plugin for
NetworkManager enforce a minimum PSK length of 20 characters.

Now, I'm all for encouraging secure config. But I'm also all for things
being useful. My network administrators have set a PSK with a length
lower than this arbitrarily chosen limit. Requests to have the length of
it raised will no doubt meet with opposition, principally because it
will have to be redistributed to every user. Yes, using PSK with a lot
of users is also dumb, I agree.

BUT :

* Since the retirement of OpenSwan / LibreSwan from Ubuntu there's no
NetworkManager support for IKEv1 / PSK / XAuth
* Now it's fixed(? - not sure if it supports IKEv1 - I know charon does, but
dunno about the NM plugin).. I still can't use it to connect to my work VPN
* I don't perceive it as the place of a VPN client to dictate what the proper
configuration of a VPN server should be (via the means of getting users to
pester their network admin)

I therefore consider this arbitrary limit a bug.

Relevant revisions imposing this limit in Git are

2b63883dba7ff015ee6a013cf5583ac464509e2c
9e74a0952e27e3ac0055b0831919aaddfef1e1b5

I therefore submit for consideration the notion that these limits should
be patched out.

Strongswan have a nm-1.2 branch ; unclear whether it's considered
"finished".

https://git.strongswan.org/?p=strongswan.git;a=shortlog;h=refs/heads/nm-1.2

This branch is based on Strongswan 5.5 whereas the version in the Xenial
repo is 5.3 - does this pose a problem for Debian version discipline?

For those trying to make IKEv2 connections... the ShrewSoft VPN GUI and
tools work.

sudo apt-get install ike-qtgui

It would be very much preferable to have something integrated with NM
working properly though. Having your VPN drop because you closed the
wrong window is... frustrating.

[Bug 1314113] Re: TLS 1.1 and 1.2 are disabled by default

2015-12-10 Thread Adrian Wilkins
Reading the OpenJDK 7 code ; offhand, I can't find a way to do this
comprehensively via configuration.

The Oracle response to the CVE for Poodle :

http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/documentation/cve-2014-3566-2342133.html

* They've disabled SSL v3.0 - this is consistent with what I see in my current
OpenJDK
* They recommend setting the system property "https.protocols" - AFAICT this
only affects sockets created using the URL class.
* Indeed : "There is no general System or Security property to disable a
specific protocol for applications using the javax.net.ssl.SSLSocket and
javax.net.ssl.SSLEngine APIs (See below for one exception on the JDK 8 client
side.)"
* There is a mechanism for doing this globally at the class that determines the
enabled protocol set by setting a system property in OpenJDK 8, but not 7

This is a PITA for clients that use e.g. Apache HttpClient and don't use
the URL class ; such clients will have to be rewritten to manipulate the
socket and call it's .getEnabledProtocols() method.

This SO question seems to cover it from the POV of HttpClient 3.x :

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/32587141/how-to-force-commons-
httpclient-3-1-to-use-tls-1-2-only-for-https

The overall best solution to this seems to be : upgrade to OpenJDK8,
which has TLSv1.2 enabled by default.

[Bug 1407998] [NEW] randomsound should be able to use Pulseaudio for input

2015-01-06 Thread Adrian Wilkins
Public bug reported:

Basically all the other bugs on this package are to do with randomsound
being an ALSA program.

This means it blocks the audio device. Even with the workarounds like
starting it after pulseaudio starts, it blocks the mike and renders it
useless for other programs.

If it could use Pulseaudio for input, it would no longer be a problem.
Not sure if this causes problems (randomsound is a system daemon.. is
Pulseaudio a user process?)

In my case : the workaround is to not allow it to start at boot

sudo update-rc.d -f randomsound remove

.. and only start it when I know I'll be depleting the entropy pool. I
have a couple of tasks like generating keys and signing jar files that
block horribly without it. But I also need to be able to webconference.

You could get another sound device just for randomsound to monopolize...
(or even as a cheap HRNG for a server - listen to all that aircon
whitenoise in your server room...)

[Bug 1395707] [NEW] Calibiri 11 intermittently rendered as italics

2014-11-24 Thread Adrian Wilkins
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 14.10
LibreOffice 1:4.3.3-0ubuntu1

1920x1080 screen, Intel graphics (hybrid graphics with nVidia switched
off)

Document is written mostly in Calibri 11

At the default zoom level (100%), certain glyphs are inappropriately
rendered as italic.

Change the zoom level and this resolves.

Change the font point size and this resolves.

Change the font face and this resolves.

This is true in both document editing mode and print preview.

Enclosed screenshots of some of the text showing this fault (and the
same text one zoom size higher).

[Bug 1395707] Re: Calibiri 11 intermittently rendered as italics

2014-11-24 Thread Adrian Wilkins
... and a reboot fixed it.

Is this linked to some weird font caching bug... like the one that
intermittently replaces particular glyphs displayed in the dash bar as
empty space?

Might not be a LibreOffice bug, might be a bug in Xorg (or whatever it
is that renders fonts).

[Bug 1334968] Re: [HP ProBook 445 G1] Microphone mute key does not work

2014-10-22 Thread Adrian Wilkins
Also have this issue with an HP zBook 15 G2

Performed the steps in #11

Alas, no effect

sudo showkey -k # continues to show keycode 465 pressed and released

The key has an embedded indicator light which does not change state.

I note that KEYBOARD_KEY_81 already has a rule defined in the Hewlett
Packard section of /lib/udev/hwdb.d/60-keyboard.hwdb which specifies it
to be fn_esc. It also expresses the opinion that fn+f8 is the battery
key

keyboard:dmi:bvn*:bvr*:bd*:svnHewlett-Packard*:pn*:pvr*
 KEYBOARD_KEY_81=fn_esc
 KEYBOARD_KEY_89=battery# Fn+F8

One thing I don't understand is the relationship between keycode and
KEYBOARD_KEY ; how does 465 relate to which KEYBOARD_KEY you use?

[Bug 1359078] Re: package openjdk-7-jdk 7u55-2.4.7-1ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: trying to overwrite '/usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-i386/src.zip', which is also in package openjdk-7-source 7u55-2.

2014-08-20 Thread Adrian Wilkins
So, the packaging situation is a bit muddy here.

I have previously manually created a softlink from

/usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-amd64/src/zip -
../java-7-openjdk-i386/src/zip

Because the source package (which is basically necessary for a useful
debugging environment in Eclipse, etc), puts the archive in the i386
folder... even through source is platform-independent.

Eclipse expects to find src.zip in the root of the JDK by default, hence
the softlink. Also submitted bugs to the effect that the packaging
should change to put the source in a platform-independant location and
softlink to the archive in the appropriate platform-dependent locations.
Perhaps a half-baked version of this is what's occurring. I note the new
folder `openjdk-7` is now the new location of the src.zip archive and
there is an appropriate softlink in the amd64 folder.

Inspecting the packages...

openjdk-7-jdk :

This package now includes
/usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-amd64/src.zip (a link to the source)

[Bug 1243806] Re: The names column has its width dictated by other columns

For me the problem is when you search in folders with deep nesting ; one

I think it should be the location column that's compressed (by omission
of some text).

[Bug 1208019] Re: Eclipse menus doesn't show up in Saucy

2014-04-04 Thread Adrian Wilkins
@mvidal0001 - Icons missing is the default GTK config option. The GNOME
config panels don't show it, of course, because giving choices to users
only confuses them, poor things. As does having icons on menus, which is
cluttered and thus confusing. Apparently.

[Bug 1240683] Re: Ubuntu one login during install hangs

2014-02-21 Thread Adrian Wilkins
Confirmed that this happens when you have no internet connection
(installing on a VirtualBox VM on a host stuck behind a proxy).

* Get to Ubuntu One stage
* Lack of connection detected correctly
* Continue greyed out
* Click Login Later - nothing happens
* No disk or network activity (for some reason the USB activity lamp on the VM
flashes a lot at this point even though there are no USB devices connected)

Also confirmed that workaround described in #16 seems to work - if you
use the manual partitioning wizard, create and format an ext4 partition
for /, clicking Login later works - the continue button is ungreyed
but you don't have to click it because the installer then continues.

[Bug 1273601] Re: openjdk-7-jre-lib : missing file /usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-common/jre/lib/resources.jar

2014-02-07 Thread Adrian Wilkins
In addition, I don't think

openjdk7-jre

depends on

openjdk-7-jre-lib

any more (it came up in autoremove today)

Looks like the platform-independent libs have been rolled into the main
arch-specific packages, but the classpaths of some dependent packages
haven't been updated to reflect this.

Since this will break stuff... should this be rated of high importance?

The workaround above to add a softlink replacing the common folder
works, by the way.

[Bug 1208019] Re: Eclipse menus doesn't show up in Saucy

2014-02-07 Thread Adrian Wilkins
Revisiting this : I don't see this behaviour with Inkscape or with GIMP.

I still see this with Eclipse 4.3

The behaviour almost looks like the menu is being drawn behind the
application window, but that could just be a product of the code flow
mentioned above.

See attached image : the top of the menu visible in the menu bar area
has been drawn, along with some of the menu spilling into the
application window, but this seems to have stopped short of rendering
the whole menu. This is the product of clicking the menu item.

[Bug 1273601] Re: openjdk-7-jre-lib : missing file /usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-common/jre/lib/resources.jar

2014-02-06 Thread Adrian Wilkins
Have a similar problem with this on 12.04 server :

Have a tomcat app failing to start because of

java.io.FileNotFoundException: /usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-
common/jre/lib/ext/pulse-java.jar

The first surprise is why a server install needs the pulseaudio
library... but that aside, the same base cause, there's no java-7
-openjdk-common folder, just the java-7-openjdk-amd64 folder (which does
contain the relevant libraries).

My desktop system doesn't have the java7-openjdk-common folder either.

Is this a packaging problem or a classpath problem?

* Audio playback breaks horribly with lots of high pitched interference and
stuttering
* Closing browser does not fix this condition
* Pausing music does not fix this condition
* `killall pulseaudio` fixes this condition

Any apps with an open audio stream will not reconnect to the new
pulseaudio process, (Rhythmbox reconnects for next track , or have to
restart the app for video players, reload the page for YouTube, etc).

Other ways of producing this state include seeking at random in video
(by using slider bars in either Totem or VLC), playing certain Flash
videos, etc, but this is the first time I've come across an audio source
that reliably produced this effect ; possibly something to do with its
combination of short high pitched intermittent tones.

** Affects: pulseaudio (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 1045353] Re: LibreOffice commands are not displayed in the HUD

2013-05-01 Thread Adrian Wilkins
+1 for #38 ; this is what I get as well (on Raring, upgrade through
12.04 12.10 13.04 )

If you start LibreOffice by opening a document from Nautilus, or from
picking a file in the dash, the first window does not get HUD
integration.

If you start the app raw without opening a file, HUD integration works
just fine.

Subsequent LibreOffice windows get HUD integration regardless of how you
start them ; so if you open a text document, and then a spreadsheet, the
document has no HUD, but the spreadsheet does.

If you close all windows, the problem recurs with the next window
opened.

[Bug 1081057] [NEW] Scripting plugin does not work (classpath problem)

2012-11-20 Thread Adrian Wilkins
Public bug reported:

Reproduce:

Install

* freemind
* freemind-plugins-script

Open Freemind, create a new map, create a node, open the script editor
via

Tools Script Editor

Create a new script

Actions New Script

Enter a very basic script (this one should set the node text to Test
Value)

 = Test Value

And run it

Actions Run

What should happen : the node text changes to Test Value
What does happen : Nothing visible in UI
Stack trace is logged to STDERR (see below)

Problem is a classpath issue : package `groovy` correctly depends on the
libasm3-java package which contains the interface listed as
NoClassDefFoundError

Classpath obtained from installed freemind starter script ==

::/usr/share/freemind/lib/freemind.jar:/usr/share/java/SimplyHTML.jar:/usr/share/java
/gnu-regexp.jar:/usr/share/java/jibx-
run-1.1.6a.jar:/usr/share/java/xpp3.jar:/usr/share/freemind/lib/bindings.jar:/usr/share/java/forms.jar:/usr/share/freemind

Suggestion : starter script should construct additional classpath
entries from a file installed with the plugins, e.g. put entries in
files in /etc/freemind/classpath.d/ or
/usr/share/freemind/plugins/classpath.d/ (or wherever is most
appropriate for debian pacakges)

Is there a standard way of constructing classpaths based on this sort of
thing in Debian? If not, there probably should be.

Adding the following entries to the classpath renders the test above
functional ; the full versions of these jars may be overkill, I
suppose.

/usr/share/java/asm3-all.jar
/usr/share/java/antlrall.jar

[Bug 111507] Re: VPN passwords not saved

2012-11-07 Thread Adrian Wilkins
I'm also seeing this ; the saved secrets are visible in the keyring
manager as

  VPN IPSec secret secret for
*/org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.vpnc/vpn

It worked the first time it was configured, but not after.

Entering the group password manually succeeds.

I can't save both passwords because one is an RSA ID.

[Bug 495423] Re: update to grub-pc writes MBR without checks, prompt or backup

2012-10-16 Thread Adrian Wilkins
I upgraded grub on a VM which I had snapshotted - apparently, this
changes the disk ID.

This was on Precise Server. I was prompted for which drive to reinstall
grub to, which is pretty much the desired result - grub is not
installing itself to a disk it hasn't seen before.

Can I infer this has been fixed, or does it not work with the desktop
distribution? I may have to make a VM and try the same trick...

[Bug 618587] Re: eclipse does not work with appmenu

2012-06-26 Thread Adrian Wilkins
After some testing with Eclipse removed from the appmenu blacklist, I
can add that currently (in latest versions on Precise) the dynamically
constructed menu can re-order the top menu bar ; e.g

Sometimes the menu changes to

Refactor Navigate File Edit Source Search Project Run Window Help

Instead of

File Edit Source Refactor Navigate Search Project Run Window Help

A workaround appears to be to put focus in another window and return to
Eclipse, which rebuilds the menu in the correct order.

[Bug 883008] Re: No file association for .mm files

2012-06-22 Thread Adrian Wilkins
** Description changed:

  [Impact]
- fill me in with explanation of severity and frequency of bug on users and
justification for backporting the fix to the stable release
+ Frequency : always
+ Severity : User cannot open file in packaged application with default actions
like double-click, selection from dash, etc.
+
+ Justification for backporting : Restores intended behaviour. Broken
+ behaviour annoying and frustrating, especially since there is no right-
+ click menu in the dash. Lack of extremely basic OS integration with
+ application filetype undermines image of distribution.

  [Text Case]
- fill me in with detailed *instructions* on how to reproduce the bug. This
will be used by people later on to verify the updated package fixes the
problem.
- 1.
- 2.
- 3.
- Broken Behavior:
- Fixed Behavior:
+
+ 1. Install FreeMind
+ 2. Start the application, create a trivial mind map, and use default save,
creating a .mm file
+ 3. Close application, browse to file with nautilus
+ 4. Note that nautilus correctly lists file type as FreeMind Map
+ 5. Double click file
+
+ Broken Behavior: File opens in Firefox, you see XML
+ Fixed Behavior: File opens in FreeMind, you see a mind map

  [Regression Potential]
- fill me in with a discussion of how regressions would typically manifest as
a result of this change. It's assumed that all candidate patches are
well-tested and have low overall risk of regression; but if there's an area of
concern be sure to call it out so testers can check it.
- After installing FreeMind, the mm file type is successfully detected as
FreeMind Map and listed as such in Nautilus.
+
+ Low risk change. No perceived potential for regression.
+
+ Original bug text below
+
+ After installing FreeMind, the mm file type is successfully detected as
+ FreeMind Map and listed as such in Nautilus.

However, the application association appears to have gone. While
FreeMind is present as an option in the Open With context menu,
FreeMind is not the default application, and cannot be set as the
default application via the GUI as it no longer appears in the list of
  applications for Open With dialogs.

[Bug 618587] Re: eclipse does not work with appmenu

2012-06-17 Thread Adrian Wilkins
Reading the above, I get the impression that the blacklisting does not
get undone because the menu still doesn't work perfectly.

I hacked my library as described in #46 above, then tried out Indigo.
The menu seems to integrate into the global menu bar and into the HUD
menu.

* Shortcut keys don't work

I did a brief experiment ; alt+key seems to open the top level menu,
and then a shortcut key without alt will select the relevant menu item.
This also works for nested menu items. This appears to behave no
differently to the normal SWT shell menu.

So I'm not sure what the issue is here..

* Arrow keys don't work properly

Navigating into submenus with arrow keys doesn't seem to work properly.
The first keypress is consumed and the highlight remains in the parent
menu. The second keypress seems to work.

This fault is not mentioned above, this is just something that I have
noticed today while experimenting. This is of a lesser concern to me
because I rarely navigate menus with arrow keys any more - especially
the gargantuan menus that Eclipse has.

* Dynamically constructed menus don't work properly

The comments above seem to indicate that this is fixed.

It seems what really needs to happen is for someone in the Eclipse
packaging team, or someone trusted by the Eclipse packaging team, to
perform the hack above, test the menu (to their satisfaction). Since I
was able to find one (apparently previously undiscovered) bug in the
menu after about 2 minutes of testing, this would seem to require work
to fix. Although the problem I found doesn't affect me because of my
menu use, I know that it will inevitably annoy someone.

I can see why libappmenu doesn't read it's blacklist from a config file
- because previously blacklisted apps might remain blacklisted, even
after problems were fixed and removed from the list, because config
files could remain. Instead, how about a whitelist as a config file ;
those of us who want to accept the minor problems that using the global
menu produces can override the blacklist, and should the problems be
fixed and the internal blacklist entry be removed, we will be unaffected
(apart from things working better), while everyone else gains another
app that works with global menus.

[Bug 937965] Re: Eclipse does not support Unity's GlobalMenu

2012-06-17 Thread Adrian Wilkins
Apparently there are still some small problems with the Eclipse menus
when using the global menu, but my personal opinion is that they are
small enough to ignore for many use profiles.

Since the only way to change the blacklist in appmenu is currently to
rebuild the package or use an editor to fiddle with it's internal string
resources, it would be nice to have a whitelist config file that could
be used to override the blacklist. If nothing else, this would actually
permit testing of the Eclipse menus in the global menubar for the
average mortal. I have hacked my library as described here :
https://bugs.launchpad.net/eclipse/+bug/618587/comments/46 ; and I'll be
working with the global menu until I find a problem that prevents me
from continuing.

[Bug 999125] [NEW] nouveau module constantly polls i2c, consumes CPU, on unused nvidia / Optimus

2012-05-14 Thread Adrian Wilkins
Public bug reported:

First noticed symptom ; lagging keyboard, pausing audio.

Viewing processes in top / system monitor revealed that a kworker
process was spiking the CPU every ~10s

perf-top on the affected process output below

Amateur opinion : Looks like nouveau module is constantly polling
hardware via I2C bus, most of the time being spent spinning the CPU
while waiting for the slow I2C bus to complete data transfers. This
causes symptoms in whatever other modules happen to have landed in the
same kworker process ; a reboot cleared up the keyboard lag.

This is an Optimus laptop (Intel i915 / nvidia Quadro 3000M) ; the
desktop is running on the i915 hardware.

 `sudo rmmod nouveau` # CPU peakiness stops
 `sudo modprobe nouveau` # problem recommences

I shall probably workaround by blacklisting the nouveau module for the
time being ; other suggestions in #ubuntu-kernel included sending the
sysfs sequences that power off the nvidia hardware in an Optimus combo.

[Bug 919194] [NEW] Unity launcher menus get stuck if opened during workspace transition

2012-01-20 Thread Adrian Wilkins
Public bug reported:

If you right click on a launcher icon while a workspace transition is in
progress, the menu will be stuck open, and unresponsive.

Reproduce :

 * Open an application.
 * Move your workspace viewpoint to another workspace
 * The following steps should be done rapidly, immediately after one another
   * Left click on the application icon in the launcher
   * While the workspace is still scrolling, right click on the application icon

This causes the right click menu to open
The menu will be unresponsive to the pointer - mouseover will not highlight
menu items. etc

 * Now left-click in the context menu ; this should do nothing
* The click will actually pass through to the application beneath it, if
there is one

The following things will clear the stuck menu :

 * Switching desktops to the left (but not to the right)
 * Opening a right-click menu for another launcher item.

Keyboard impulses appear to continue to work. ctrl-alt-Up and Down
keystrokes will now move the menu highlight around ; this is presumably
why switching desktop to the left (ctrl-alt-Left) closes the menu.

Oneiric with latest updates at time of writing.

[Bug 42629] Re: EOG crashes on SVG images created with OpenOffice.org Draw

2012-01-16 Thread Adrian Wilkins
I've attached an SVG file that crashes the entire X server when opened
in eog (but not when opened in Inkscape).

This doesn't happen on my home desktop with a big beefy nvidia card,
just on productivity machines with lesser graphics cards.

[Bug 42629] Re: EOG crashes on SVG images created with OpenOffice.org Draw

2011-11-22 Thread Adrian Wilkins
I ran into this one with some SVG images generated by graphviz from dot
files.

My problem was even more extreme ; the entire X server crashed, taking
my session and all my open applications with it. IMHO that makes it more
than a minor bug - anything that can crash your X server can cause you
to lose significant amounts of work.

This happens reliably on both SVG and PNG images generated by the dot
utility from the same file. The image is 4344x11893 pixels.

The SVG will open harmlessly in Inkscape. The PNG opens harmlessly in
GIMP. The thumbnail generator in nautilus creates a thumbnail for both
without causing problems.

Therefore I'm inclined to blame eog for the problem. Note especially
that the problem happens with PNG and not just SVG.

[Bug 769277] Re: Eclipse shows overlay scrollbar but when i hover there is no scroll handles

2011-10-27 Thread Adrian Wilkins
Axel, as far as we can tell, the GTK bug that provoked the
GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS fix has gone - could you try removing

export GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS=true
export LIBOVERLAY_SCROLLBAR=0

.. and seeing if that works ok for you? I'm having no problems with the
overlay scrollbars on Indigo / Oneiric.

I agree that it would be best if it all worked - menu included. I'm not
sure what to tweak to remove Eclipse from the menu blacklist to see if
it works though

[Bug 869196] Re: unity panel menus don't stay open when clicked on second monitor with different geometry

2011-10-15 Thread Adrian Wilkins
Am seeing this bug on unity 4.22.0-0ubuntu3

This bug doesn't only occur on dual monitors with different geometry
[edited title accordingly] ; this is occurring for me on a TwinView
spanned display, both monitors having equal geometry (1680x1050) for a
composite resolution of 3360x1050.

In addition this seems to be mixed in behaviour.

If I close a panel application and reopen it, a menu which previously
exhibited the bug is replaced by one that works, sat next to icons with
bugged menus. One can rake across from a menu in this working state
to the other menus to open them, and they remain open.

The alternate icon on the second screen, which works for the original
panel icons, for the new icon, exhibits the bug. Is this influenced by
which panel the icon appears on first?

Anyway, nice to see a fix is in the pipeline.

** Summary changed:

- unity panel menus don't stay open when clicked on second monitor with
different geometry
+ unity panel menus don't stay open when clicked on second monitor

[Bug 873187] Re: Eclipse does not include the relevant software plugin repository

2011-10-14 Thread Adrian Wilkins
The underlying problems here appear to be

 * The repository list in the /usr/bin/eclipse startup script is still that for
Helios, but the release for Oneiric has been updated to Indigo
 * The repo injection functions in the script are broken

If there's no .eclipse folder the startup script executes this command
which creates it and pre-fills it

 /usr/lib/eclipse/eclipse -clean -initialize

It then hunts for the settings files governing p2 repositories so it can
inject some extra entries.

The find commands in the script now locate 2 paths rather than one, then
tests the string of two paths to see if it's a file ; it isn't, it's a
list of two paths. Thus it fails to inject entries into the config.

e.g. for metadata, one set of settings in

~/.eclipse/org.eclipse.platform_3.7.0_155965261/p2/org.eclipse.equinox.p2.engine/.settings/org.eclipse.equinox.p2.metadata.repository.prefs

And one here

~/.eclipse/org.eclipse.platform_3.7.0_155965261/p2/org.eclipse.equinox.p2.engine/profileRegistry/PlatformProfile.profile/.data/.settings/org.eclipse.equinox.p2.metadata.repository.prefs

The latter file appears to be the correct one for the metadata ; this is
where eclipse stores any update sites you add for yourself.

The default files in the PlatformProfile.profile folder as created by
this command appear to contain the Helios update sites as well ; and
also references to the Galileo repositories (3.5). I'd be surprised if
that were correct - these files look like they could do with a good
cleanout. Since the way they are generated is hidden in the eclipse
implementation, I'm not sure what contributes to their content.

[Bug 769277] Re: Eclipse shows overlay scrollbar but when i hover there is no scroll handles

2011-09-23 Thread Adrian Wilkins
Agreed - as mentioned in my comment on #779416 reproduced above in
comment #51 ;

The overlay scrollbar works just fine with Galileo on Natty, provided
you remove this environment variable from the startup script.

  GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS=true

This was originally a workaround for the problems mentioned in #443004
(and it's many dupes). As far as possible, I've tested for these
problems and they no longer seem to occur.

It would seem the original GTK bug that caused these problems has been
resolved.

I REALLY LIKE the new scrollbars for Eclipse - because it has so many
panels, overlay scrollbars mean you gain quite a lot of space that would
otherwise just be full of scrollbar obscuring useful information.

I was annoyed when I tried out Eclipse on Oneiric and discoverer that
it's been blacklisted for the scrollbars.

Please

 * Don't blacklist Eclipse for the overlay scrollbars - they work just fine IF
you do the next thing
 * Remove the GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS=true variable from the startup script on Natty
(and other supported revisions)
** I note that on Oneiric, the startup script for Eclipse has been replaced by
the normal Eclipse binary loader. I think this is why the Oneiric release of
Eclipse sees the return of the main major annoyance with Eclipse on Ubuntu - no
update sites configured. But that's a job for another bug. But you can't remove
the env variable from the Oneiric startup script, because there isn't one now.

[Bug 781180] Re: gvim loses menu with Unity interface

2011-07-05 Thread Adrian Wilkins
This only occurs when you start gvim from a terminal. If you start gvim
from the Unity interface, or from Nautilus, the menu appears correctly.

As stated elsewhere, if you start gvim in the foreground, this doesn't
happen either.

Presume that what is happening is that the unity menu is attempting to
bind to the initially started process, but instead should be binding to
the process that gvim forks when you run it from the terminal.
