Thanks for your prompt work on this. I enabled the proposed repository and have upgraded the zfs packages. Thanks. The main advantage of sticking with apt is unattended-upgrades makes it easy to be sure security updates are applied automatically. I’m not familiar with a similar solution for pip, and it sounds like “upgrade everything” isn’t that straightforward (according to https://github.com/pypa/pip/issues/3819). Any idea why the 0.7.14 release works? Was there a refactoring that extracted out the B2 code? I'm using netatalk as well, and this bug was causing /run/samba/gencache_notrans.tdb to grow to several hundred MB until /run was out of space. According to tdbtool the database itself was basically empty, but it was still taking up disk even after a repack. Public bug reported: upstart: 1.12.1-0ubuntu1 I've built a Vagrant image using the cloud image form http://cloud- images.ubuntu.com/vagrant/trusty/current/trusty-server-cloudimg-i386 -vagrant-disk1.box For some reason, most scripts in /etc/init.d won't run on boot, even when the various symlinks are set up properly. An easy package to test with is memcached, but I've seen the same problem with redis-server as well as with Virtualbox's init scripts. I was debugging this by going through a verbose boot, and I discovered that if I boot to recovery, and then immediately resume a normal boot, the init.d scripts do run and all the services load. I'm not familiar enough with recovery to know how it changes what upstart runs, but at least it's something to debug. I understand that the user theme is different than the gdm theme. I thought gdm configuration was controlled partially by /var/lib/gdm/*, but that could be incorrect. I've included the gconf info from the gdm user as I thought that might be relevant. I'm having trouble getting a screenshot; using ImageMagick doesn't work, and gdmthemetester looks to no longer exist. This is fine, except the package configuration still asks for and creates a MySQL database. Unfortunately, I'm RMA'ing the drive which caused this. Before I removed it, it wasn't even being detected anymore, so I'm not sure even if I had the drive I could reproduce it. But, what I think happened is that the drive died completely (versus just not being reliable), and when it dropped off of the SATA controller the kernel locked. [Bug 415512] [NEW] System freezes when removing large numbers of hardlinked files on ext4
Public bug reported: I'm running into an issue when attempting to remove a large number of hardlinked files on Jaunty. Here's the background: - The server is running mdraid + lvm, with the file system under load formatted as ext4. - I use a script to rsync a remote server with the --link-dest parameter daily. - Once a month, I remove the oldest backups with a command such as sudo rm -rf 200906*. Within a few minutes, the system stops responding to anything other than a ping. I attempted to get a kernel panic log by booting in single user mode and running 'setterm -blank' to disable power saving, but apparently when it panics it kills the display as well. I'm using a bluetooth keyboard, and the system won't respond to it either. I didn't have any problems like this when the file system was previously formatted as ReiserFS. I should also note that I currently have e2fsprogs and its dependents installed from Karmic to avoid the resizing FS data loss bug. However, I don't think those packages are related to the current freeze. A backport for to installed systems would be incredibly useful. e2fslibs and e2fsprogs from karmic seem to install fine on a 9.04 system; is there any reason not to just use those packages? For those just wanting to be able to burn a disc, I've only found two ways to burn discs which don't involve genisoimage, as virtually every Linux burning frontend uses the same backend: 1. Nero Linux seems to work fine. It has a trial, and is proprietary, but they do provide an Ubuntu package which integrates perfectly into the system. 2. Use the freeware (but not open source) ImgBurn in Wine: http://www.imgburn.com/. I'm amazed at how well this program works in Wine. It uses the Wine provided API's to talk directly to the drive, avoiding genisoimage completely. I've been progressively adding more disks to the controller over the past few weeks, and am now using every port, with 5 hard drives and 1 DVD drive. I'd had this (and other) problems with EVMS, so I'm actually glad support was dropped as straight LVM is rock solid for me. I had seen those error messages at other points as well, and I had /boot outside of EVMS on a RAID1 set. I have two nForce4 based motherboards with which I can reproduce SATA
resets leading to data corruption when disks are attached on the SATA
controller. The first board is an Elitegroup nForce 4M-A, the second is
an Asus M2N-E. If I switch my drives to PCI SATA cards using the
sata_sil driver, everything works properly. As well, using an
nForce3-based motherboard's onboard controller works fine, and it's also
using the sata_nv module. I've had this problem in Ubuntu 7.10 as well.
Other than the motherboard, the only difference is that the nForce3
setup uses a single-core AMD64 versus a dual-core AMD 64 X2. So, it's
possible that the issue in the sata controller is only brought out by
the use of SMP.
I also experienced the same problems booting with a System Rescue CD
(http://www.sysresccd.org/Main_Page), which uses the newer
linux-2.6.24.5 kernel. From it, I was able to get SATA resets to occur
simply by running hdparm -I, without assembling the RAID or LVM.
Any suggestions as to how I can troubleshoot this without putting my
data at risk?
Here's an example of the kernel messages. In this case, the system
recovered, but often it will just give up on bringing back the device:

[Bug 117989] grub installer doesn't create boot symlink for boot partition
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: grub-installer When installing from the 7.04 AMD64 alternative CD, the system is left in an unbootable state if /boot is on a seperate partition from /. This is a common scenario for RAID, LVM, etc. The fix is to boot up in rescue mode, mount /boot, and create a symlink using 'ln -s . boot' in /boot. This is documented on the Wiki: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GrubHowto#head- 44a5805eeda20ec1b6bd6c274cbf3a74230675d1 As you tell the partitioner that /boot is a seperate partition, grub- installer should be able to figure this out and create the symlink as needed. Even if /boot is not on a seperate partition, I can't see anything bad coming from creating the symlink, so it could just be created in all cases. [Bug 93265] /etc/init.d/evms breaks /dev/evms nodes created by initram-fs
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: evms I'm not sure what caused this, but at some point my working Ubuntu edgy install with EVMS for root stopped booting properly. When I boot, checkfs dies as my RAID5 devices have been discovered by evms as /dev/evms/md/md0 and so on. These devices are not mountable, so it's not a case of the volume being named differently. Disabling the init.d script allows the system to boot properly. When I break into a shell during local-top in initramfs, all devices are properly discovered.
