[Bug 1387420] Re: System freezes when performing a backup bash script

2014-11-22 Thread The Aviv
I encountered a problem while installing linux-
headers-3.18.0-031800rc5-generic_3.18.0-031800rc5.201411162035_amd64.deb
for v3.18-rc5-vivid (and linux-
headers-3.17.2-031702-generic_3.17.2-031702.201410301416_amd64.deb for
v3.17.2-vivid). A message window (in Ubuntu Software Centre) popped up:

Sorry, a problem occurred while installing software.
Package: nvidia-331

It then redirected me to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source
/nvidia-graphics-drivers-331/+bug/1367468.

It seems a fixed has been released: A new version of the driver is
available, 331.89 (I have 331.38). I just need to figure out how to
install it.

2014-11-22 Thread The Aviv
In Synaptic Package Manager, it says the latest version for nvidia-331
is 331.38-0ubuntu7.1, which I have installed. I don't know how to
install version 331.89.

Should I wait for a stable release update, and in the meantime,
uninstall nvidia-331? According to the instructions, I should uninstall
the conflicting package; so, that's what I will do.

[Bug 1387420] Re: System freezes when performing a backup bash script

2014-11-18 Thread The Aviv
Yes, I've only been installing one file for a given kernel version: the
generic amd64 image .deb package. That's because the instructions read:
To boot into an upstream kernel you only need to download and install
the *image*.deb package that corresponds to your architecture. The
other files are only mentioned if you need to build any external
modules. But now, I will install three files for a given kernel
version:

the generic amd64 image .deb package
the generic amd64 headers .deb package
the all headers .deb package

I will try v3.17.2-vivid. If it doesn't work, I will try the next most
recent version until I am able to boot.

[Bug 1387420] Re: System freezes when performing a backup bash script

2014-11-12 Thread The Aviv
I tried 3.18-rc1. I got the same result as with rc3 and rc4: a black
screen. But this time, I also noticed a message quickly flashing
(lasting only a second or two): kvm: disabled by bios.

So far, I tried:

v3.18-rc1-utopic
v3.18-rc2-utopic
v3.18-rc3-vivid
v3.18-rc4-vivid

(I didn't try v3.18-rc2-vivid. Joseph Salisbury directed me to
v3.18-rc2-utopic.)

Please let me know if there are other versions I should try.

(By the way, what I do is install the generic amd64 linux image. For
rc1, I downloaded linux-
image-3.18.0-031800rc1-generic_3.18.0-031800rc1.201410192135_amd64.deb,
and installed it using Ubuntu Software Centre. That's the procedure I've
been following with the other versions as well.)

The output to

sudo dmidecode -s bios-version sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

I will run my backup script a few times to see if the freezing still

again. Perhaps, with the new BIOS, it will boot this time.

[Bug 1387420] [NEW] System freezes when performing a backup bash script

2014-10-29 Thread The Aviv
Public bug reported:

I attached the bash script I use for performing backup.

When performing backup, I connect my external hard drive and a flash
drive, open a terminal window, and execute the script. Half the time it
works without a problem; the other half, the system freezes and I need
to restart the computer - but the backup still performs correctly; the
freezing seems to happen immediately when it's done.

I do not relate this bug definitely to problems with xfce4-power-manager.
It could be a bug in the application-indicator applet. I haven't looked

[Bug 947124] [NEW] Alt+Tab sometimes acts like Alt+(button above Tab)

2012-03-05 Thread Aviv Yeshayav
Public bug reported:

Alt+Tab is a keyboard shortcut for switching between applications.
Alt+(button above Tab) is a keyboard shortcut for switching between
windows of an application.

Alt+Tab sometimes acts like Alt+(button above Tab).

To reproduce the bug:

1. Open an application (such as Nautilus).
2. Open at least two windows of another application (such as Firefox).
3. Use Alt+(button above Tab) to switch between the windows of the second
application (Firefox).
4. Use Alt+Tab to switch back to the first application (Nautilus).

At step 4, Alt+Tab does not switch to the first application (Nautilus)
as expected. It switches to the previously-used window of the second
application (Firefox).

This is not a desirable effect. Alt+Tab should only switch between
applications, leaving Alt+(button above Tab) to do the switching between
windows.

[Bug 730617] Re: When using scale/expose, windows don't keep their order

2012-02-25 Thread Aviv Yeshayav
Yes, it's reproducible.

Open a few Firefox windows, and try switching between them. According to
my understanding, this can only be done by:

(1) Clicking the Firefox icon, or

(2) Pressing Alt+Grave while holding on to Alt, and using Grave to
select the desired window.

Either way, a view shows up, with thumbnails of all the windows, as seen
in the screenshot I attached.

The problem is that each time a user attempts to do this, the windows
get reordered, based on recent usage.

The result is not helpful. It would be easier for users to switch
between windows if the order maintained itself.

[Bug 730617] Re: When using scale/expose, windows don't keep their order

2012-02-22 Thread The Aviv
Why are the bug statuses marked incomplete?

According to the Bugs statuses page in Launchpad Help
(https://help.launchpad.net/Bugs/Statuses), [If the status is marked
incomplete,] the bug report is incomplete and needs more information
before it can be triaged. Bugs in this state are considered for expiry.

I would like to change the statuses to confirmed: a member of the
community other than the original reporter believes that this report
describes a genuine bug in enough detail that a developer could start
work on a fix.

[Bug 939002] [NEW] Difficulty switching between windows

2012-02-22 Thread The Aviv
Public bug reported:

To switch between windows of an open application, Unity should have a
keyboard shortcut analogous to Super+(1 to 0). Users should also be able
to use (some key)+(Right or Left) for the same purpose. Likewise, (some
key)+(Up or Down) could be useful for switching between open
applications. (An extra key is necessary because the cursor keys are
likely to have functionality in the application.)

The ordering of the windows should NOT change (see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/730617). Unity
should somehow allow users to easily change the ordering manually.

There should be an alternative to Super+(1 to 0), like Ctrl+(1 to 0).
Whenever Super+(1 to 0) is utilized for switching between applications,
the launcher appears, which is annoying. An alternative like Ctrl+(1 to
0) would NOT invoke the launcher, but allow the possiblity of doing so
[with Super+(1 to 0)] (to review the mapping, of applications to
numbers, for example).

I also think it would be better if Alt+Tab would ONLY switch between
applications, leaving Alt+Grave to do the switching between windows.

[Bug 823214] Re: window icon is blurred, if it has not desktop file

2012-02-13 Thread The Aviv
I am experiencing the same problem with a Java application I am
writting. The application icon appears blurred. I tried using the same
icon as Firefox, and it still appeared blurred. I attached a screenshot
showing the two icons next to each other. In the screenshot, the first
Firefox icon belongs to the browser; the second Firefox icon, just below
it, belongs to the Java application. They both use the same PNG image,
but the icon of the Java application appears blurred.

I think it is reasonable to consider the issue a Unity bug.

[Bug 908402] [NEW] LXDE power manager expands panel when connecting/disconnecting power cable

2011-12-24 Thread Aviv
Public bug reported:

Xfce4-power-manager 1.0.10 is in the right side of LXPanel (ver. 0.5.8). When
connecting and disconnecting the power cable from the netbook (Asus 1001PX),
the space between the power manager and its left neighbour increases. This
occurs with every connection/disconnection such that the panel expands to
reduce the window list (task manager) space.
This is reproducible.
Xubuntu 11.10 is installed together with lubuntu-desktop.

[Bug 875671] [NEW] Firefox 7.0.1 autostarts after login in Xubuntu 11.10

2011-10-16 Thread Aviv
Public bug reported:

Firefox 7.0.1 autostarts after login in Xubuntu 11.10.
Firefox is NOT set to autostart via Settings Manager--Session ans Startup, nor
appears in /etc/xdg/autostart

Therefore I think the bug is NOT in Firefox.

[Bug 381983] Re: Jaunty: visual effects setting is not saved after logout

2010-09-05 Thread Aviv
I cannot relate this behaviour to any known parameter of jaunty. Moreover, I
could not report this bug via the bug-reporting tool ('bug-buddy') due to a bug
in the latter.
However, this bug occurred neither in Karmic nor Lucid.

The solution in #10 did not work on my t400s. I added the xorg input

/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d without effect.

I created a quick bash script using the solution to #5 and have it run

[Bug 479842] [NEW] Karmic freezes on resume from suspend

2009-11-10 Thread Aviv Ben-Yosef
Public bug reported:

I've upgraded to Karmic from Jaunty a few days ago, and since that resuming
from suspend cause trouble.
Most of the time, when I close the lid, wait for the laptop (Thinkpad X200s) to
suspend and open the lid again, it seems to resume, I see the gnome screensaver
password prompt for about a second and then the display changes to tty1 and the
system hangs (the suspend led (little moon) is blinking, the keyboard doesn't
respond to magic sysrq, no network access to the machine). A hard reboot is the
only way to move past it.

I've tried looking at log files for errors, but couldn't see anything
that looks like something bad is going on. When I suspend using the
Fn+F4 key, or by choosing suspend from System-Shutdown-Suspend, I've
yet to see this happen (even if I resumed by closing the lid after the
suspend and opening it again), tried about 20 times.

[Bug 479842] Re: Karmic freezes on resume from suspend Thinkpad X200s

2009-11-10 Thread Aviv Ben-Yosef
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 464291 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/464291

This might be a duplicate indeed, but in my case the displays switches
to tty1 and I've successfully resumed without AC at sometimes, unlike
the other bug report.

But, if you decide it really is the same issue - please make sure to
change that bug's status to Confirmed as well, as currently it's still
filed as New - and not being able to use a laptop with resume is really,
really terrible (especially given that boot time is now longer than it
was with jaunty on my laptop).

Re: [Bug 373377] Re: Firefox responds slowly when several tabs are open

2009-08-05 Thread Aviv
Hi Micah,

Please find attached my system hw profile. Drivers installed: X.Org X server -
Intel i8xx, i9xx ver. 2:2.4.1-1ubuntu10.4 and X.Org X server - i740 ver.
1:1.2.0-1build2 display drivers.
I have 20 extensions installed, yet only the Flash Player plugin (Adobe) is
responsible for high CPU consumption. I tested this by a series of
'enable-disable' of all extensions, and pinned-down the problem to the Adobe
Flash Player plugin. This I observed on other GNU/Linux systems as well. Yet on
other
systems in which I have Swfdec or Gnash as replacements, Firefox performs
smoothly.
All my hardware is fully supported by Ubuntu, and drivers are updated and
functioning perfectly with all other graphical applications.

Aviv.

[Bug 381983] [NEW] Jaunty: visual effects setting is not saved after logout

2009-05-30 Thread Aviv
Public bug reported:

When starting Ubuntu (normal boot), desktop items are partially hidden
under the upper panel. Moving the panel or hiding it does not help,
icons are still hidden beneath it, as if screen size is unknown to the
system. Any application that I start is also hidden under the upper
desktop panel, such that I cannot move it. Nautilus windows lack the
upper window border, including the minimize-maximize-close buttons, and
I cannot minimize, move or close them. When I change the visual effects
to any setting, this resolves the problem temporarily: when I then hide
the upper panel, desktop icons assume their normal position. This is
maintained until logout. When I log-in again (or re-boot), all is faulty
once more. This situation suddenly appeared, such that I cannot link it
to any change I made in my system.

Quoting Chris Coulson chrisccoul...@googlemail.com:

Why not? Your issue is identical. There is an issue with gnome-terminal
where it will not work for anybody when launched with gksu. That means
that the root terminal menu option (which basically runs gksu gnome-
terminal) does not run for anybody in here.

Your bug report is that the root terminal doesn't work - it's exactly
 the same!

So, please explain why you think your bug is different...

However, if this is NOT the case, then my bug is indeed identical to
  328575.

Re: [Bug 314038] Re: Integrated video interface is broken in Jaunty

2009-05-10 Thread Aviv
Many thanks, I'll try it.

Quoting Christoph Korn c_k...@gmx.de:

I have built vlc-1.0.0-rc1 for jaunty in my PPA.
 https://launchpad.net/~c-korn/+archive/vlc

VLC requires qt4-4.5.1 which I took from karmic.
I did not encounter any problems but this release may have regressions or
 other bugs.

[Bug 374569] [NEW] Sound converter takes minutes to launch

2009-05-10 Thread Aviv
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: soundconverter

In Jaunty: Sound Converter will launch only after two or three minutes after
clicking its menu entry.
The Sound Converter window opens, but remains blank for a couple of minutes
(process is do-poll). In this state, it interferes with Nautilus: attempting to
open folders result in blank and unresponsive Nautilus windows. Also interferes
with gnome-system-monitor: when I try to launch it, its window remains blank
and unresponsive.

** Affects: soundconverter (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

Nope, I still do not think that my problem is a duplicate of bug 328575.

I do not think that my bug submission is a duplicate of bug 328575.
Gnome-terminal works fine, ONLY root terminal fails (gksu
/usr/bin/x-terminal-emulator fails to execute). Hence, GConf may be
 error-free
  in this case.

It's definately the same bug. The root terminal launcher runs gksu
 x-terminal-emulator. x-terminal-emulator is just a symlink to
 gnome-terminal on the default system.

 Regards
 Chris
