[Bug 1966440] Re: gnome-shell crashes often when using the menu (start) button

2022-03-29 Thread KaOS-bEat
Thanks for looking into this.

'Wayland + nvidia drivers' seems to be very problematic...even with 510
I had to reboot in recovery and edit /etc/gdm3/custom.conf to disable wayland
and reinstall nvidia 470 to get a working system again.

I did enable some PPAs, for hardware like an intel realsense depth camera, just
removing the PPAs did not fix the problems.
I never enabled the 'proposed'
a broken upgrade could be a thing...
the dist-upgrade (20.04 >> 22.04) did crash and I had to do 'dpkg --configure
-a' and 'apt --fix-broken' or something similar. Probably a fresh install is a
good idea...

[Bug 1966440] [NEW] gnome-shell crashes often when using the menu (start) button

2022-03-25 Thread KaOS-bEat
Public bug reported:

No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description:Ubuntu Jammy Jellyfish (development branch)
Release:22.04
Codename: jammy

I upgraded from 20.04 LTS

gnome-shell:
  Installed: 3.36.9-0ubuntu0.20.04.2
  Candidate: 42~beta-1ubuntu3
  Version table:

 *** 3.36.9-0ubuntu0.20.04.2 100
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

When I press the "windows" key and start searching for an app this works fine,
and I can launch the app. However immediately afterwards all windows freeze,
loose their decoration/position. Then the screen flashes and we're back. All
notification in the queue pop up again as well.

It happens almost every time.

I checked the PID of the gnome-shell in top, and it effectively changes so I
believe the gnome-shell crashes. It shouldn't.
How can I collect relevant debug info?
I cannot seem to find a cause.
I'm using nvidia-drivers if that matters.

The XHC1 doesn't fix the issue but the LID0 does.

[Bug 1784065] Re: upgrade from 14.04 to 16.04 fails due to `interest-await' in trigger

2018-07-29 Thread Beat via ubuntu-bugs
Update to my comment #8:
The upgrade from 14.04 to 16.04 failed later again on package gconf2

dpkg: error processing package gconf2 (--configure):
dependency problems - leaving triggers unprocessed
dpkg: dependency problems prevent processing triggers for gconf2:
 gconf2 depends on python:any; however:
Package python is not configured yet.

And many other packages.

This PC has been installed with Ubuntu 12.04, then upgraded to 14.04,
and now upgrading to 16.04 fails with the bug described in this tracker
item and leaves the system not upgraded and not upgradable. Reverting
now to 14.04 from backup and postponing upgrade to 16.04.

Also affected me.

In addition of doing the steps in comment #6 above, I had to do:

sudo cp libglib2.0-0_2.48.0-1ubuntu4_amd64.deb /var/cache/apt/archives/.
sudo cp ./usr/bin/dpkg /usr/bin/.

Then I could run

sudo apt-get -f install

[Bug 1780098] Re: pvgrub "premature end of file" on new kernel

2018-07-25 Thread Beat via ubuntu-bugs
Btw, while cleaning up the systems, I now found that in the /boot folder
of one of the 2 systems that I upgraded and both (=all) failed with
4.4.0-130, I also saw a strange file named "initrd.img-4.4.0-139" that
got installed at exactly same time than "initrd.img-4.4.0-130-generic"
and other normal 4.4.0-130 files. Maybe that helps find the issue ?

I also just installed 4.4.0-131.157 over 4.4.0-128 (that I reinstalled
that and booted on it to avoid the 4.4.0-130 bug) and it seems like it
is working again in a Xen VM with PVGrub. My issue was identical, but
with a different error message (bad memory access error in the very
first initrd boot phase also pointing to a badly built initrd.img).

I had also the error "ocfs2 is not compatible with your environment."
when trying to start it with the default Pacemaker, Corosync and

This was the case both using console crm and LCMC.

Confirming that this patch fixed the bug and that now it starts fine

This should imho really be included with the next upgrade of ocfs2-tools

[Bug 1480710] [NEW] partition error causes filesystem corruption

2015-08-02 Thread Beat Naef
Public bug reported:

Hello, thank you for helping me with this.

Description:Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS
Release:14.04

I installed Ubuntu 14.04 via pxeboot on the same machine two times. The
root files system got corrupted both times after reboot, requiring a new
install. For both install attempts I used LVM.

The third time I installed the OS without LVM.
Using fdisk -l, I noticed the following:
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 *2048 968415231 484206592 83 Linux
/dev/sda2 968417278 976771071 41768975 Extended
Partition 2 does not start on physical sector boundary.
/dev/sda5 968417280 976771071 4176896 82 Linux swap / Solaris

I ran fdisk /dev/sda to realign partition boundaries. Partition boundary
misalignment during installation may be cause for files system corruption.
So far no problems with the partitions and filesystem.

[Bug 1222356] Re: ** (apport-gtk:3020): WARNING **: Couldn't register with accessibility bus: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message

2014-08-05 Thread Beat
Affected me too on Ubuntu 14.04 with liferea RSS-reader, after an
apport-crash on wakeup from sleep on laptop (macbook pro 17 with
external 30 Dell-display connected on sleep and wake-up).

Running export NO_AT_BRIDGE=1 before invoking liferea worked around this
condition. Probably rebooting the laptop will fix it too.

Don't know if it is linked or not, so wrting it here in case it helps:
When waking from sleep external monitor is recognized but not waken up.
Unplugging and repluging it was enough with Ubuntu 13.10, but not with 14.04
anymore. However unplugging then replugging and then just starting Settings
application resolves the issue. (but just starting Settings without unplugging
and replugging external monitor is not enough).

[Bug 774795] Re: gnome-terminal corruption when switching workspaces

2011-05-10 Thread Beat Müller
After reading bug 778083 I come to the conclusion that it is
the same kind of bug. If you think it is useful you could merge
the two bug reports.

I installed the 64 bit version of Natty on another box than my
laptop with a different graphics card (can't remember offhand
which one) and the behaviour is the same. Therefore I suspect
the bug is hardware independent.

If you need further information, let me know.

[Bug 747729] Re: fglrx crashes X server on startup

2011-05-02 Thread Beat Müller
I already deleted my PAE kernel, therefore I reinstalled the removed packages:
apt-get install linux-generic-pae linux-image-2.6.38-8-generic-pae
linux-image-generic-pae

These are the interesting lines:

run-parts: executing /etc/kernel/postinst.d/dkms 2.6.38-8-generic-pae
/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.38-8-generic-pae
 * dkms: running auto installation service for kernel 2.6.38-8-generic-pae

 *   fglrx (8.840)...
 [fail]
dkms: WARNING: linux headers are missing, which may explain the above failures.
please install the linux-headers-2.6.38-8-generic-pae package to fix this.

The dkms build failed, too:
dkms build -m fglrx -v 8.840 -k 2.6.38-8-generic-pae

Error! Your kernel headers for kernel 2.6.38-8-generic-pae cannot be found at
/lib/modules/2.6.38-8-generic-pae/build or
/lib/modules/2.6.38-8-generic-pae/source.
You can use the --kernelsourcedir option to tell DKMS where it's located, or
you could install the linux-headers-2.6.38-8-generic-pae package.

Then I added the PAE headers...:
apt-get install linux-headers-2.6.38-8-generic-pae

... which built and installed the missing driver automatically:
...
run-parts: executing /etc/kernel/header_postinst.d/dkms 2.6.38-8-generic-pae
/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.38-8-generic-pae
 * dkms: running auto installation service for kernel 2.6.38-8-generic-pae

 *   fglrx (8.840)...
 [ OK ]
run-parts: executing /etc/kernel/header_postinst.d/nvidia-common
2.6.38-8-generic-pae /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.38-8-generic-pae

Booting into the new PAE was flawless. The missing package
(linux-headers-2.6.38-8-generic-pae)
was not present when I updated to 11.04. Therefore I suggest that this package
is added when a PAE
kernel is set to be installed with drivers like fglrx.

[Bug 747729] Re: fglrx crashes X server on startup

2011-05-01 Thread Beat Müller
After some more trying I found the following facts: Default kernel is
vmlinuz-2.6.38-8-generic-pae,
but when I use vmlinuz-2.6.38-8-generic (i. e. without this physical address
extension) it works
perfectly. Are there boot option which prevent a fglrx crash?

If someone gives me some hints I could try more stuff, since I am not too
experienced with kernel
fiddling.

[Bug 774795] [NEW] gnome-terminal corruption when switching workspaces

2011-05-01 Thread Beat Müller
Public bug reported:

My box is a Lenovo T400 (4 GB RAM, ATI Radeon HD 3400). After I upgraded from
10.10 to 11.04
via Update Manager, gnome-terminals undergo a corruption when being redrawn
under certain
cirumstances. The system is fully patched. I use Gnome 2.32.1 with Metacity.

In workspace 1 Firefox is open, in workspace 2 are several xterms (created with
gnome-terminal
--geometry=100x40). In one of these xterms vi is running. When I switch from
workspace 1
to 2 with Crt-Alt-Arrow, the content of the xterm with vi is sometimes not
redrawn correctly. In
these cases it contains the stuff of the Firefox window of this screen
position. I need to move the
faulty xtrem just by one pixel, and everything is redrawn correctly. This is
not exactly reproducible,
it simply happens from time to time. I still try to find a pattern for this
behaviour.

[Bug 747729] Re: fglrx crashes X server on startup

2011-04-30 Thread Beat Müller
Yesterday I updated from 10.10 to 11.04 on my Lenovo T400 with a Radeon HD 3400
graphics card.
When I boot with the shipped kernel 2.6.38-8 the X server crashes, with the
last kernel 2.6.35-28
it works fine. (See attachments)

I ran aticonfig as suggested but , alas, at no avail. Maybe there is a hint at
27,614 seconds in the
xorg.1.log : DRI initialization failed -- kernel module (fglrx.ko) may be
missing or incompatible.
I checked with locate but it is here.

fglrx is up to date:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-evdev

After upgrading form Karmic To Lucid I had no mouse or keyboard in X,
outside X everything was fine. X reported:

eviocgname failed inappropriate ioctl for device

unfortunately this is from my google search, and not from the Xlog,
which I forgot to copy after I fixed it. The problem was a missing line
in /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Section Module
Load evdev
EndSection

after I added the evdev line everything worked fine

[Bug 199167] Re: Owner changed after saving file

2009-12-01 Thread KaOS-bEat
so about 18 months later this bug still hasn't been fixed? This could
lead to serious trouble if you are editing config files on a server
through gedit like I was doing. Files can become unreadable to some
programs.

steps to reproduce in 9.10:

1. open ssh connection in nautilus
2. open text file with other owner then current logged in user (but group write
perms) in gedit
3. save.

I couldn't find another text editor that understood the gnome sftp URI, so it
might be a nautilus/gvfs problem

[Bug 449326] Re: Network services don't start automatically at boot time

2009-11-27 Thread KaOS-bEat
I'm still experiencing this problem on 9.10 with all updates installed.

before I can connect to VPN through the nm-applet I have to manually
run:

#sudo /etc/init.d/openvpn start

#sudo openvpn -C myvpn.conf connects me too.

So I don't know to what it's related, but I read on the unbuntu forums
it could be fixed with a change to the openvpninitscript by addding a
'sleep 3' timout somewhere.

hope this helps

Re: [Bug 353013] Re: [FUJITSU SIEMENS AMILO Notebook Sa 3650] suspend/resume failure

2009-08-26 Thread beat steiger
Hello Lean

First I tried it with the CD Image karmic 9.10 with the same problems as
reported with ubuntu 9.04.
After this I installed karmic on my hard drive and updated it, which
didn't change the problem.
Then I tried the MainlineBuild vmlinuz-2.6.31-020631rc6-generic (amd
64) which didn't chage the problem.
My laptop seems to suspend with the power-button blinking. When I try to
resume there seems to be some disk activity but it ends with a black screen.
With 9.04 it also suspended. On trying to resume there are vertical
colored lines appearing on my screen which never lead to a new login.
The problem appears each time I try to suspend also with older versions
of ubuntu 8.10.
Is there any more specific information I can send you to fix this problem?

Greetings

Beat Steiger

 Hi beat steiger,

This was reported a while ago but hasn't had any recent activity. Can
you confirm this issue exists with the most recent Karmic Koala 9.10
Alpha release. ISO CD images are available at
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/ . You should be able to test
 Suspend from a LiveCD.

If the issue remains with Karmic it would be great to then also test the
latest upstream mainline kernel available. This will allow additional
upstream developers to examine this issue. Refer to
 https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds .

Finally, if you could also take a look at

Hi Leann Ogaswara

The issue remains the same with Karmic Koala (amd 64).th After suspend
the notebook doesn't resume and doesn't respond to keyboard input
anymore. So you have to shut down with turning off the power. Does it
help if i install karmic koala, so i can send a report?

Thanks

[Bug 235070] Re: Please apply libgomp patch to GCC for Hardy Heron

Keean

Compiling ImageMagick with --disable-openmp was a workaround for me
(ImageMagick 6.4.7-8).

I agree with the above posters that a fixed package would really help...

Thanks

You're are wrong, i'm not Daniel

2008/12/8 pjari [EMAIL PROTECTED]

 Hi Daniel,

Sorry, it took me a bit to remember this.

I don't know. After F-Spot Crashed (subsequent to DeVeDee and for
unrelated reasons) I took Ubuntu 8.04 LTS off my hardware because I had
to recover a lot from backups. It seemed that stuff frequently
broke after system updates, probably my fault, but it was getting
frustrating. I am glad I got separate, external disks that I started to
use for backup reasons, but unfortunately i did not backup frequently
enough, as I still lost some photos...

I haven't tried since, as I was able to get my project done in Windoze
 Movie Maker. Sorry!

 Paul

Is this symptom still reproducible in 8.10 or 9.04?
