In fact, booting the older kernel version (4.4.0-18-generic), everything runs
fine:
To test, i reinstalled the nvidia-drivers using

ubuntu-drivers autoinstall

I then build the kernel modules for all kernels using this tip from
askubuntu (http://askubuntu.com/questions/53364/command-to-rebuild-all-
dkms-modules-for-all-installed-kernels)

ls /var/lib/initramfs-tools | sudo xargs -n1
/usr/lib/dkms/dkms_autoinstaller start

The i rebooted and selected the Kernel 4.4.0-18 from the Advanced Boot
Menu in Grub. This fixes my problems.

[Bug 1574732] [NEW] Regression: Update in 16.04 from last days renders nvidia driver unusable

2016-04-25 Thread Benjamin Geese
Public bug reported:

I am running Ubuntu 16.04 since at least four months, always with the
nvidia proprietary drivers (installed from the repository). I used
nvidia-361 for a while with no issues (and i need it for steam gaming).
However, an update installed on my machine yesterday breaks the nvidia
drivers. I tried purging the driver, rebooting and reinstalling and i
tried a newer version for the ubuntu-drivers ppa. Nothing helps: With
the nvidia driver installed, i get a low-resolution login screen, but
cannot login due to missing 3d acceleration. Running on nouveau works
fine.

This seems very strange to since everything worked until this afternoon.
Yesterday, i was happily playing games on steam, installed some updates
and now, my graphics are broken.

[Bug 1559420] [NEW] plugin install fails in ubuntu/debian packaged version of vagrant (xenial)

2016-03-19 Thread Benjamin Geese
Public bug reported:

The plugin installation via vagrant plugin install fails on the debian/ubuntu
packages version of vagrant on xenial.
Using the upstream package for debian (same software version) works as expected.

Ubuntu version: Xenial
Package version: 1.8.1+dfsg-1

This is the error message:

I suspect this is caused by one of the Ubuntu/Debian patches to the

[Bug 1434986] Re: Not working network connection after boot

2015-06-02 Thread Benjamin Geese
This was getting really annoying, so i simple reinstalled my system
yesterday. I directly installed Ubuntu 15.04. The problem is gone now.
So it must be a configuration. Either something i did which cannot
remember (i can not see a reason is should have fiddled with that), or
something introducing during the 15.05 development process. I still
suspect the timeframe around the systemd switch. It might be helpful to
know that 1) the problem did not exist with 14.04 or 14.10 (upgraded
from 14.04) but 15.04 since systemd switch (upgraded from 14.04, then
14.10).

@kaiserclaudius: sadly did not try to used upstart on this machine, but
we have a second machine with a similar issue, i will try this there as
soon as i find the time.

@carlix: Does Lubuntu use systemd?

[Bug 1434986] Re: Not working network connection after boot

2015-05-27 Thread Benjamin Geese
I too think this is a systemd-related problem. It was running 15.04 a
while before this occured and i do not think it is a coincedence. We
have another laptop here recently updated from 14.10 to 15.04 which
introduced the same problem.

[Bug 1434986] Re: Not working network connection after boot

2015-05-09 Thread Benjamin Geese
Any news?

This is very annoying and clearly a regression. I understand this might
be annoying to fix, but as asked, @jhe created the bug in the Gnome
Bugtracker and there is zero activity on this bug. Only on user on CC
and no comment. How can we raise awareness if you think this is an
upstream bug?

[Bug 1434986] Re: Not working network connection after boot

2015-04-19 Thread Benjamin Geese
This is happening for me as well on Ubuntu 15.04 (upgraded from 14.04
through 14.10).

Interestingly, i changed my wifi-card since first experiencing this, but
it did not help. It had an rt2x00 driven USB adapter before and now run
an Intel based PCIe card with exactly the same behaviour: Directly after
boot, NM shows a connection but i cannot visit any website. I have to
manually disconnect and connect again to get internet access.

My network adapter:
05:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Wireless 7260 (rev bb)

[Bug 1429354] [NEW] Systemd takes very long to boot with error in swap mounting and nvidia persistenced

2015-03-07 Thread Benjamin Geese
Public bug reported:

My system boots almost instantly with upstart. Today i tried booting with
systemd via the additional grub option.
However, with systemd it takes really long to boot but – so long that i forced
a reboot once because i thought i got stuck.

Looking in to boot journal, i found the following error concerning the swap:
Mär 07 09:28:00 darw1n systemd[1]: dev-sda3.swap swap process exited,
code=exited status=255
Mär 07 09:28:00 darw1n systemd[1]: Failed to activate swap Swap Partition.
Mär 07 09:28:00 darw1n systemd[1]: Unit dev-sda3.swap entered failed state.

And this concerning nvidia-persistenced
Mär 07 09:28:00 darw1n nvidia-persistenced[433]: Started (433)
Mär 07 09:28:00 darw1n nvidia-persistenced[433]: Failed to query NVIDIA

Mär 07 09:28:00 darw1n nvidia-persistenced[433]: The daemon no longer has
permission to remove its runtime data directory /var/run/nvidia-persistenced

I checked that /dev/sda3 exists and is a swap partition and i check for the
/dev/nvidia files:
$ ls -Alst /dev/nvidia0
0 crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 195, 0 Mär 7 09:29 /dev/nvidia0

[Bug 1321421] Re: 8086:8ca0 Sound output unusable with Intel Z97/H97 and ALC1150 Audio

2014-06-02 Thread Benjamin Geese
I just wanted to let you know that linus has pulled the patch from
Takashi Iwai and it is in 3.15-rc8 so almost certainly in 3.15 [1,2].

As i understood from a discussion on the kernel team channel in irc last
week, a backport for 14.04 should be possible now.

2014-05-23 Thread Benjamin Geese
There is a fix for the Linux kernel lined up for 3.15. Maybe a backport
to 3.13 is possible because many more intel h97/z97 users will want to
use Ubuntu 14.04?

[Bug 1321421] Re: Sound output unusable with Intel Z97/H97 Chipsets and ALC1150 Audio

2014-05-22 Thread Benjamin Geese
@Brad:

Here is an update on this issue: Some People on the ArchLinux Forun[1] found a
fix the cause.
It seems there is a Workaround required (for this audio codec ALC1150) for the
Intel PCHs but the device ids where missing. Until this fix is in ALSA (the
kernel)
the following module parameters fix this issue for me and others:
options snd-hda-intel vid=8086 pid=8ca0 snoop=0

I simply created a modprobe.d file and reboot and now sound works!
echo "options snd-hda-intel vid=8086 pid=8ca0 snoop=0" > sudo
/etc/modprobe.d/fix-sound-intel97.

I the forum, user Arthur who found the solution mentions there is a
patch for the linux kernel, however i found no source or link to refer
to yet but asked the user is there is something to provide us with.

[Bug 1321421] Re: Severly distorted Sound output with ALC1150 Sound Codec

2014-05-20 Thread Benjamin Geese
Another update:
I build the Vanilla 3.14 Kernel and removed the NVIDIA Graphics Card in an
attemp to isolate the issue. No success so far. Actually it turns out the
problem is not related to the NVIDIA Card. I get the same noise without the
card installed.

It seems to get a bit better under high cpu load though strange? Any
help would be appreciated.

2014-05-20 Thread Benjamin Geese
Here is an update:
I tried to install the realtek drivers from their website with no success.
However interestingly the cracked and jittering sound got match worse after
installing my NVIDIA GTX 750 drivers.
Before, there were frequent and annoying clicks, now the sound is unusable!

[Bug 1302407] [NEW] Recent Grub2 grub-install has issues with my macboot efi dual-boot configuration

2014-04-04 Thread Benjamin Geese
Public bug reported:

I managed to install Ubuntu 14.04 on my MacBook exactly as i whish
thanks to improved EFI support and this guide:
http://glandium.org/blog/?p=2830.

This enables to boot Ubuntu without reFit or similar, but requires the
grub-install to work on a hfs partition. In earlier versions of GRUB2, you
simply could replace some lines in the grub install script, but that is now a
binary, so that fix is no longer possible:
if test "x$efi_fs" = xfat; then :; else
echo "${efidir} doesn't look like an EFI partition." 1>&2
efidir=
fi

While a still am able to boot, this taints my dpkg-database as whenever
a package like the kernel is updated:

[Bug 733349] Re: Minimize Application's Windows upon clicking its Launcher Icon

2014-02-04 Thread Benjamin Geese
I know this is rather annoying as everybody seems to see the need to
comment on this while this issue has been decided about two years ago.

Saying that, i join this mess of noisy comments because i feel on view is
rather underrepresented in this thread:
The one of a happy user!

I am perfectly happy with the current behaviour have never missed the
minimized feature. I fact it might disturb my workflow.

And even more so: I have never be so happy with a stable and functional
desktop environment on linux as i am with unity. I think there have been
some very good design decision made and, this time, we should just trust
those people who decided this is a opinion or won't fix and leave it at
this.

2013-04-26 Thread Benjamin Geese
I am currently testing the mainline kernel. However it seems to me the
error is related somehow to dhcp services or more complicated then i
thought. Booting into Ubuntu today i suddenly had wifi access.

This is more detailed waht happened before i got the error:
1) Booted into 12.04, downloaded raring live amd64,. created a startup disk
2) Reboot directly from 12.04 to the startup disk and install 13.04 replacing
13.04
- Note: There is no wifi access in the installer. While the network is
detected, no connection is possible in several tries.
3) Boot into the freshly installed Ubuntu, the error persists
- Note: See the logs attached above
4) Removing and reconnecting the stick does not help

This is what i have done before booting today, the WIFI suddenly works with the
buggy USB Stick, which might be related to the mysterious fix:
a) Using another USB WIFI Adapter to post this bug.
b) Removing the other USB connector and reconnecting the old
c) Powering the computer off
d) Booting Windows and using the buggy adaptor for Wifi access (works fine)
e) Rebooting Ubuntu Raring.

[Bug 1172351] [NEW] [rt73usb] Wifi cannot connect (regression), Ubuntu Raring

2013-04-24 Thread Benjamin Geese
Public bug reported:

I recently installed ubuntu 13.04 from the daily builds. My WiFi USB Stick is
no longer working. My Wifi gets detected, i can enter my password however i do
not get a connection. I borrowed another USB stick with another chipset and
this works fine.
However, the Stick based on the RT73usb chipset worked flawless with ubuntu
12.04 and 12.10.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Disable all other wifi sticks/hardware
2) connect a wifi stick with rt73usb chipset
3) select your preffered wifi network with network-manager
4) enter your (wpa2) password
5) the system tries to connect but does not succed

I attached a syslog containing the events from trying to connect until
it gives up.

Yes. I've been using it for about a week now and it seems to be
flawless for just about all the wikis we have, including outreach,

[Bug 925503] Re: nautilus segfaults in gtk_ui_manager_new_merge_id()

2012-03-01 Thread Benjamin Geese
It happened while i was doing some unity testing with checkbox. Wanted
to use the unity dash to open gedit (typed gedi and hitted enter), but
somehow started nautilus in full screen. as this was not what i wanted i
very quickly tryed to close it blicking close. Nothing seemed to happen,
clicked several time until the crash message appeared.

I was able to reproduce it once, by opening trying to close it again
very fast. Sadly with gdb attached an debug symbols installed, i am no
longer able to repduce it. I might be doing something wrong...

[Bug 904479] Re: Gwibber views "Home" and "Messages" stay empty after connecting to twitter

2012-02-27 Thread Benjamin Geese
I am running a fresh install of precise (alpha plus updates). The bug is
no longer present

Steps to reproduce:
Click on the message icon (in status bar), then setup broadcast, click an new
accont for twitter in the gwibber dialogue, choose authorize and enter your
details. After the authorization, the gwibber status line says "refreshing" and
my status updates appear.
This did not happen before, instead i had to close and restart gwibber. So it
seems fixed.

[Bug 904479] [NEW] Gwibber views "Home" and "Messages" stay empty after connecting to twitter

2011-12-14 Thread Benjamin Geese
Public bug reported:

In a fairly fresh install of Ubuntu Precise (Alpha) it just connected
Gwibber to my twitter account. That seems to work but the Gwibber views
"Home" and "Messages" stay empty even after changing tabs several times.
Interestingly, Replies appear in Gwibber.

I expected that Gwibber view get populated with data fram twitter almost
immediatly. If that takes some time, a kind of loading indicator should
be displayed.

[Bug 898931] Re: software-center crashed with SIGSEGV in PyGILState_Ensure()

2011-12-14 Thread Benjamin Geese
This affects me as well. It happened to me after trying to install Xchat
from Software Centre. Nothing happened when i clicked on install apart
from the button label changing for some time and then reverting back to
"Install". After that, USC finally crashed.

[Bug 549065] Re: cofusing the user who wants to rip music from their CDs

2010-04-08 Thread Benjamin Geese
I believe "Copy tracks to the library" is ok. But it should be
consistent, which means the right-click menu should say "copy to
library". I guess upstream should take care of this.

[Bug 540706] Re: System fails to boot with plymouth installed (ATI driver)

2010-03-26 Thread Benjamin Geese
It seems that this problem is not reproducible without splash. I didn't
experience a crash since i removed the "splash" option from grub.

Also, pressing "Esc" has no effect on lock ups.

I edited my /etc/init/mountall.conf, but i don't know where to find the
debug informations.

[Bug 532633] Re: [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to "menu:minimize, maximize, close"

2010-03-19 Thread Benjamin Geese
I did not read all the comments here, but some of them are really
annoying and stupid. i got used to the new position and now i like it.
The only thing which confuses me is the shutdown button still being on
the right.

All these people here complaining about the issue with google chrome
having the button on the right side: it costs you only 20 seconds to
change that: open the chrome options menu, click on options, change to
the "personal stuff" tab und choose "use system title bar and borders".
not really a hard.

In my opinion, new themes look great. with kms and plymouth, its the
most beautiful booting, login and desktop experience i've ever seen on
any desktop os and by far superior the the older ubuntu releases.

[Bug 540706] Re: System fails to boot with plymouth installed (ATI driver)

2010-03-19 Thread Benjamin Geese
I did not yet try the SysRq Key Combination, but here is what seems to a
workaround for me.

I have the following HD Layout:
NTFS (with windows installed) - ext4 root partition - swap partition - ext4
home - ext4 opt.

My fstab looks like this:
#
proc/proc procdefaults0 0
# / was on /dev/sda5 during installation
UUID=6b16985d-05da-4660-9760-2b5aa1175d30 /   ext4
errors=remount-ro 0   1
# /home was on /dev/sda6 during installation
UUID=1db33369-f427-4398-bb61-d54e802aefa1 /home   ext4defaults
  0 2
# /opt was on /dev/sda7 during installation
UUID=14f0cce9-3257-4c01-8d3e-9f88aa92babe /optext4defaults
  0 2
# swap was on /dev/sda8 during installation
UUID=bafbe7fa-d571-42bc-91c1-e45c1a12ae20 noneswapsw
  0 0

Interestingly, if i change it to the following, ubuntu boots:
#
proc/proc procdefaults0 0
# / was on /dev/sda5 during installation
UUID=6b16985d-05da-4660-9760-2b5aa1175d30 /   ext4
errors=remount-ro 0   1
# /home was on /dev/sda6 during installation
UUID=1db33369-f427-4398-bb61-d54e802aefa1 /home   ext4defaults
  0 2
# /opt was on /dev/sda7 during installation
UUID=14f0cce9-3257-4c01-8d3e-9f88aa92babe /optext4
defaults,nobootwait0 0
#UUID=14f0cce9-3257-4c01-8d3e-9f88aa92babe /optext4defaults
   0 2
# swap was on /dev/sda8 during installation
UUID=bafbe7fa-d571-42bc-91c1-e45c1a12ae20 noneswapsw
  0 0

The difference is that use the "nobootwait" option for my /opt partition
and set "pass" to 0 instead of 2 for the same.

I hope this may help you with fixing this bug.

Yes, the cryptsetup package is installed.

I should have been a bit more detailed about that: The dots keeps
spinning for a time a lot longer than the usual boot, but then suddenly
stop and the systems *freezes*. At least it seems to, as nothing happens
anymore. I have to press and hold the power button until the system is
off.

[Bug 540706] [NEW] ubuntu freezes on startup sometimes on "cold" boot

2010-03-17 Thread Benjamin Geese
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: plymouth

This is what happens: Every now and then, ubuntu seems to freeze in
plymouth while displaying the logo and the spinning dots. Normally, the
boot-up prozess on my ATI R300 equipped Thinkpad R52 works smooth (and
looks great, by the way), but sometimes, the spinning-dots are displayed
a lot longer these time while the hdd-led keeps on until after sometime,
the dots stop moving and nothing happens anymore.

These two facts seem to be related to this problem:
1.) It is the first startup process on the laptop since powering it completly
off. It doesn't seem to happen after reboots or even if i started win7 before
booting in ubuntu on the machine.
2.) i do skip the grub-menu by pressing enter or another key which causes to
but ubuntu before the grub timeout.

I my very incomplete understanding of how upstart/plymouth work, this
may be timing problem?

thats a really big image which takes a long time to load. if i now click on
the loading tap to open it, the whole x server crashes and i am presented the
gdm login screen.

interestingly: if i wait until the image is loaded, i can open the tab
without a crash - but the display is corrupted.

@semente: it seems to me you had another problem.

i cannot confirm. for me, changing the theme does not help. emphaty
keeps crashing. where do i get the list of files and packages dan speaks
of to help identify thsi problem?

[Bug 450290] Re: empathy crashed with SIGSEGV in g_type_check_instance()

2009-10-23 Thread Benjamin Geese
I can confirm Dan's observation. But i believe i created my accounts
myself.

empthy -a works,
empathy -n crashes as emphaty does since a few weeks or days.

also, i tried removing the configured accounts, but that doesn't help at
all.

[Bug 458111] [NEW] Upstart prints an ernormous amount of (invalid) errors while boot using encrypted home

2009-10-22 Thread Benjamin Geese
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: upstart

I'm using an encrypted setup using on encrypted partition which contains an lvm
which contains my /home.
This runs fine for a while, but since the last update, upstart prints a lot of
(repeating) errors about these devices being unable to mount BEFORE i am able
to type in my luks password and decrypt the partition. after that, to booting
goes in without errors. Everything works after that point.

[Bug 365124] Re: akonadi fails to start

2009-05-28 Thread Benjamin Geese
i've had the same problems as craig. although i never touched apparmor
oder akondi configuration before, akonadi kept on failing to start.

disabling apparmor fixed that.
after that, i tried the steps thomas mentioned (aa-complain mysqld-akonadi,
reloading apparmor profiles and then restaerting akonadi) which actually fixed
the problem for me!

now even kolab works like a charms. thanks
