[Bug 1164236] Re: 13.04 beta 2 plasma active crashes on startup
I've actually rebuilt kubuntu's plasma active source packages (contour, kde-artwork-active, startactive, plasma-mobile, share-like-connect) on debian unstable, so I'm not sure how much my experience applies to this bug. I noticed that that in /usr/bin/startactive someone had wisely commented: # There's something wrong with d-bus invocation, # so we are doing a rather dirty forced-launch # before the real startactive is run # pkill -u ${USER} dbus-launch # pkill -u ${USER} dbus-daemon # unset DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS # unset DBUS_SESSION_BUS_PID # export `dbus-launch` # sleep 3 Uncommenting these last 6 commands allowed plasma active to start without crashing on my system. [Bug 969343] Re: Unable to connect to WPA enterprise wireless
Felix, this bug *has* been fixed in Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise Pangolin) and later. From your comment, it sounds like you are describing an unrelated wifi bug. This bug prevented users from connecting to certain WPA2 Enterprise networks. The bug in your comment allows you to connect to a WPA2 Enterprise network but, some time later, causes a kernel panic. This is almost certainly a kernel/driver issue and *not* a bug in wpasupplicant or openssl. If your bug hasn't already been reported, I suggest opening a new bug and providing the brand/model of your wifi card, a kernel stack trace, and the output of dmesg, if possible. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/969343 Title: Unable to connect to WPA enterprise wireless To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/oem-priority/+bug/969343/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 969343] Re: Unable to connect to WPA enterprise wireless
I'm wondering if, as rmcd suggests, we're dealing with two separate bugs (buggy implementations of WPA access points) here. On one hand, the patch du jour that disables TLS session tickets seems to fix the problem I've been having authenticating to certain Aruba access points. On the other hand, I'm wondering if Diane Trout's patch for disabling the TLS hearbeat extension is necessary for some other access points. Can anyone with access to an Aruba network who is actually using precise or quantal confirm that the packages currently in the repos fix the former case? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/969343 Title: Unable to connect to WPA enterprise wireless To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/oem-priority/+bug/969343/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 578184] Re: plymouth fsck suggests user skips mounting root FS
Also, not sure if this should be a separate bug, but the user should never see the message Serious errors were found while checking the disk drive... unless fsck actually found serious errors while checking the filesystem. In the case described here, pressing c to cancel a routine fsck should resume normal startup without asking the user any more questions because fsck did not find any errors while checking the filesystem. Only in the very rare case that the user cancels the fsck *and* something is actually wrong with the fs should the user see the Serious errors... message. And I agree that, when that happens, naively offering the user the option of not mounting / is probably not the most appropriate course of action. -- plymouth fsck suggests user skips mounting root FS https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/578184 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Using mountall from lucid-proposed, I also still get the Serious errors were found... message when I press c to cancel the fsck. I am not testing on VirtualBox -- this is happening on my actual hardware. The situation is somewhat improved, since pressing i to ignore the error message now resumes normal startup (before, pressing i did nothing). [Bug 571707] Re: fsck progress stalls at boot, plymouthd/mountall eats CPU
I tried arand's plymouth and mountall packages from stable and they work... sort of. With the patches: * fsck now proceeds at normal speed * Pressing C is no longer ignored That's the good news. The sort of goes with the second point. Pressing C ought to resume the normal boot process, preferably with some sort of user-friendly message like, File check skipped. Instead, pressing C produces the following message: Serious errors were found while checking the disk drive for / Press I to ignore, S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery First of all, no, serious errors were not found. Plymouth is just saying that. Secondly, pressing I, S, or M is ignored. This behavior is mentioned in the forums, so it's probably a separate (as of yet unreported) bug. [Bug 272176] Re: Can't input chinese in Kubuntu 8.10
This is still an issue in Kubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Beta. The fix ought to be straightforward. After the user adds a language requiring complex character input in the KDE System Settings, the Regional and Language module should start scim and then invoke im-switch thusly: im-switch -s scim-bridge This will enable complex character input using scim under any locale, even if the locale is a language without complex characters (like English). [Bug 337502] [NEW] guided partitioning of multiple disks is confusing
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: ubiquity Guided partitioning in ubiquity is confusing when multiple disks are involved. I first noticed the issue in Kubuntu's daily-live from March 3, which uses ubiquity 1.11.14, but it may have existed before that. Consider attached screenshot 1 showing the partitioner running on a system with two hard disks (both of which have preexisting partitions) before the user has clicked on anything. Note that Before Install and After Install graphics are shown for both disks, even though ubiquity is only going to repartition one of the disks. This could confuse a novice user who doesn't know that Ubiquity is really only going to repartition the disk selected by the radio button. Now consider attached screenshot 2, which shows what happens when the user selects the radio button for either disk. The graphics for the unselected disk are no longer drawn, which is ostensibly what screenshot 1 should have looked like. However the Before Install and After Install text is still drawn for the unselected disk. While this extra text isn't going to confuse many users, it doesn't look very pretty. Finally, consider attached screenshot 3, which shows what happens when the user selects the Install them side by side radio button. The Before Resize and After Resize graphics and text are drawn only for one disk, which is ostensibly what screenshots 1 and 2 should have looked like. However it is always drawn for the first disk, regardless of which disk has been selected under Use the entire disk. Which disk will be repartitioned -- the one that is being drawn, or the one that has been selected? At best, this is really confusing; at worst, the user has no way to tell the partitioner to do a side by side install on the second disk. There are several ways of making this less confusing, but here's what I would recommend: 1. Make the selection of a disk independent from the selection of what to do with that disk. Have one place where the user selects a disk and a separate place where the user selects whether to use the entire disk or share it with another OS. 2. Always draw before and after graphics for all disks, but make them reflect what's actually going to happen during the install. The before and after graphics should look the same for the disks that haven't been selected. This will reassure the user that changes will not being made to those disks. A couple of other usability issues I'm too lazy to file separate bug reports for: 1. Drawing graphics for multiple hard disks takes up a lot of vertical space, which is a problem on devices with limited screen resolution. It would be nice if those graphics were inside a vertical scroll pane. 2. The wording of Install them side by side, choosing between them each startup it somewhat awkward for the perspective of a novice user. Does them refer to a disk, a partition, or an operating system? What exactly does startup mean? Perhaps the wording could be changed to something more like: Share the disk with existing operating systems, and choose which operating system to use when you turn on your computer. ** Affects: ubiquity (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- guided partitioning of multiple disks is confusing https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/337502 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 337548] [NEW] grub installs to the wrong location
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: ubiquity Ubiquity provides an Advanced... button that lets the user choose where to install the boot loader. In my case, it didn't offer much of a choice (see the attached screenshot), but that's not my major gripe at the moment. Although the Advanced... dialog says the boot loader is going to be installed to /dev/sdb, which corresponds to hd1, grub is actually installed to (the MBR of) hd0 instead. I'm using the March 3 2009 daily-live of Kubuntu, which equates to Ubiquity 1.11.14. In the aforementioned screenshot, you can see that Ubuntu will be installed to /dev/sdb. You can also see that grub ought to be installed to /dev/sdb as well. Look at the attached file grub.txt, which I made from the livecd after the installation finished, and you can clearly see that /dev/sdb corresponds to hd1. However the installation logs indicate that grub was installed to hd0. The menu.lst file generated by Ubiquity uses uuid instead of root for the new installation, so booting the installation works out alright. It uses root instead of uuid for preexisting operating systems, and for these it correctly associates partitions on /dev/sda with hd0 and partitions on /dev/sdb with hd1. ** Affects: ubiquity (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- grub installs to the wrong location https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/337548 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 337555] [NEW] kde4 panel does not occupy full width of screen by default
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: kdebase-plasma The panel does not extend across the full width of the screen by default, as you can see in the attached screenshot. The same issue was evident on the livecd I used for installation. I'm pretty sure the panel is supposed to occupy the full width of the screen, since that's the way it always looks in Jaunty screenshots. Resizing the panel manually is easy enough, but it ought to be the proper width by default. I wonder if this has something to do with my widescreen monitor -- my display resolution is 1440x900. The attached screenshot was taken shortly after installation from the March 3, 2009 Kubuntu daily-live. That equates to kdebase-plasma 4:4.2.0-0ubuntu3. [Bug 272176] Re: Can't input chinese in Kubuntu 8.10
Thanks to ZhengPeng Hou I was able to get CJK input working under KDE. Here's what happened: Scenario I: A fresh install of Ubuntu. Go to System Administration Language Support. Select Japanese (or whatever CJK language you want support for). Check Input methods, Additional Fonts, Extra software, and Enable support to enter complex characters. Uncheck Basic Translations and Extra Translations and leave the Default Language as English (United States) (unless you want all your applications to appear with Japanese translations). Click OK and wait for packages to download and install. Log out and log back in after package installation is complete. Open any application and press Ctrl+Space to type in Japanese. Scenario II: A fresh install of Ubuntu + kubuntu-desktop packages. Repeat Scenario I in a Gnome session. When warned that The language support is not installed completely, click Install to install a couple of extra packages. Log out and log into a KDE session. Open any application and press Ctrl+Space to type in Japanese. Scenario III: A fresh install of Kubuntu. Go to K Favorites System Settings Personal Regional Langauge. Change the Country or region to United States of America. Choose Add Language US English. Click Install Language. When warned that The language support is not installed completely, click Install to install a couple of extra packages. Select Japanese and click Install, then wait for package installation to complete. Choose Add Language Japanese. Move US English back to the top of the language list (BUG! This shouldn't be necessary, and even after doing this some applications randomly load with Japanese translations). Click Apply. Log out and log back in. In a terminal, run imswitch -s scim-bridge. Start scim (not skim!) by pressing Alt+F2 and entering scim. Log out and log back in. Open any application and press Ctrl+Space to type in Japanese. Conclusion: The good news is that CJK input is now working under KDE. The bad news is that setting up CJK input support without the ubuntu-desktop packages installed is not at all intuitive. Presumably, the language support installer under Gnome automatically runs the im-switch command and starts scim. The language support installer under KDE ought to do the same, but it doesn't. Could someone please reassign this bug from skim (which it has nothing to do with) to wherever is appropriate? Also, this bug should probably be wishlisted. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-applets The new user switcher applet in Intrepid (the one that replaces the logout button) is causing problems when kdm is set as the login manager. The user switcher applet isn't drawn, and an error dialog (see attached screenshot) with the following text appear immediately after login: User switcher has quit unexpectedly If you reload a panel object, it will automatically be added back to the panel. The dialog provides two buttons, Don't Reload and Reload. Clicking Reload doesn't bring the applet back -- it just brings up the same dialog. Clicking Don't Reload makes the dialog go away, but the user is still left without the applet. Switching the login manager to gdm does not automatically bring the applet back, however after switching to gdm the applet can be added to the panel manually. The following are real problems: 1. vague error message 2. absence of a logout button 3. applet doesn't automatically return if the user switches back to gdm Here's what I think ought to happen if the user sets kdm as the login manager: 1. Let's try to be rational here. The Ubuntu developers have been very busy putting together the best release of Ubuntu yet. I'm sure they'd like to include it in the release, but things don't always work out the way we want them too. If 3.0.x doesn't make it into main by release time, hopefully it will be officially supported and added to main soon after the fact. Even if that doesn't happen, you can expect to see it in backports, or you can use the PPA that Yannick has graciously put together for us. [Bug 254268] Re: closing search bar deletes highlighted text
Excellent observation! Using the latest and greatest Kubuntu Beta (installed to my HD), I can elicit the bug by switching from xim to scim-bridge as you described. Either way Japanese input still doesn't work. scim-bridge-client-qt4 0.4.14-2ubuntu3 scim-bridge-client-qt 0.4.14-2ubuntu3 scim-bridge-agent 0.4.14-2ubuntu3 I don't know which input method ought to preferred (xim or scim-bridge) by KDE applications since neither of them currently seems to work, but I'm guessing it's supposed to be scim-bridge since that was the case in Hardy Heron. Since this bug doesn't appear by default (the user has to manually switch the input method), it would perhaps be better to actually get CJK input working first, then address this bug if it's still a problem. -- closing search bar deletes highlighted text https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/254268 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 286730] [NEW] split screen wrap with nv and Intrepid daily-live
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-nv While testing today's (October 20, 2008) x86 Ubuntu daily-live on a friend's computer, I had a strange video problem once I got into X. The screen is split down the middle and wrapped around the sides, and there is a vertical green bar on the right side. Since a picture is worth 3,514,538 words (depending on your machine architecture and compression algorithm), I've attached a mock-up that should make everything clear. The visible mouse pointer is where it should be, i.e., if I move the mouse all the way to the right, it shows up on the right side of the monitor. Functionally, the mouse pointer is where the desktop should be, i.e., if I move the mouse all the way to the right and right-click, the context menu appears on the rightmost edge of the desktop (which is in the middle of the monitor). There's no problem with usplash or the terminal. In X, everything appears normally if the vesa driver is used instead of the nv driver. I've attached the syslog from before and after switching from nv to vesa, as well as Xorg logs for both cases. The pertinent line of lspci output is as follows: 1:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV36.2 [GeForce FX 5700] (rev a1) The computer is attached to a Philips 17pf9936 monitor via a VGA cable. [Bug 286014] [NEW] kde print ignores duplex copy options
Public bug reported: When printing in KDE 4 (Kubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex Beta), print options like duplex and copy number are ignored. For example, if I try to print two copies of a two-page document from Okular with duplex enabled, I end up with only one copy and no duplex. Print options are also ignored by Konqueror and, I suspect, probably all KDE 4 applications. This is a regression from KDE 3 in Kubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron.
