[Bug 569202] Re: WhiteOrchid.jpg replaces warty-final-ubuntu.jpg as login wallpaper

2010-12-03 Thread Brett Alton
I don't understand how Debian packaging works, but a file called ubuntu-
wallpapers-extra.xml.in has WhiteOrchid.jpg at the top of the file, with
the rest listed below. So for some reason, something is setting the GDM
to WhiteOrchid.jpg because it's the first on the list (probably
something to do with the call from setup.cfg).

I'm positive this is a one line fix, I just can't find it because I
don't understand packaging at the moment.

[Bug 668641] Re: GNOME does not load theme after innstalling NVIDIA non-free driver

2010-12-02 Thread Brett Hoerner
Are we sure this is an nvidia issue? I would assume it's a race
condition because the SSD is so fast.

I also have this issue on an Intel X25-M. I can try Noveau but it's too
slow to use regularly, I think.

Hi Mellis,
I never got that version to work, I am not sure it is possible. Best
thing is to use the hacked for beagle version of ubuntu found here:

http://www.elinux.org/BeagleBoardUbuntu#Maverick_10.10_2

Searching the Beagleboard mailing list on googlegroups is very helpful
if you have problems.
Good luck!

[Bug 660314] Re: Audacity missing main menu

So without running Tommy's fix[1], this makes Audacity completely
unusable when using a mouse. Thus, it is a 'medium' bug is it not?

What needs to be done to have this fixed in Maverick?

I recently upgraded my lucid laptop (thinkpad X200s) to maverick. I found
after the reboot that my wireless degrades after about 8 hours of ordinary
use. I had 45% packet loss direct to my WAP, and this was easily cleared up
by doing modprobe -r iwlagn; modprobe iwlagn as root.

I'd not be so quick to file this except that Paul Collins told me that
he'd seen the same behavior from upstream 2.6.35.

[Bug 664827] Re: BeagleBoard xM freezes while attempting to boot 10.10

Hi Oliver,
I did not know the first boot script would be important, since it made it all
the way through. What posted was the 2nd time around when it did not make it
all the way through (aka froze, although from what you say, maybe it didn't
freeze, just my display was not showing anything further...)

[Bug 664827] Re: BeagleBoard xM freezes while attempting to boot 10.10

2010-10-23 Thread Brett Mahar
Changed boot.scr to:

if test ${beaglerev} = xMA; then
echo Kernel is not ready for 1Ghz limiting to 800Mhz
setenv mpurate 800

setenv dvimode 1280x720mr...@60

boot

For some reason minicom is no longer dumping my screen output to its
log, so I am missing the first part of the first boot cycle. Pausing
after reboot and re-installing boot.scr as described above, I get output
on the serial port:

[Bug 664827] Re: BeagleBoard xM freezes while attempting to boot 10.10

2010-10-22 Thread Brett Mahar
Yes I followed the instructions linked to in the original post, and
adjusted the boot.scr for serial bootablity to:

if test ${beaglerev} = xMA; then
echo Kernel is not ready for 1Ghz limiting to 800Mhz
setenv mpurate 800
fi
setenv dvimode 1280x720mr...@60
setenv vram 12MB
setenv bootcmd 'mmc init; fatload mmc 0:1 0x8000 uImage; fatload mmc 0:1
0x8160 uInitrd; bootm 0x8000 0x8160'
setenv bootargs 'console=ttyS2,115200n8 console=tty0 root=/dev/mmcblk0p2
rootwait ro vram=${vram} omapfb.mode=tv:pal omapdss.def_disp=tv fixrtc
buddy=unknown'
boot

I don't know what to call not going any further in the boot process, if you
don't want to call it freezing :-)
I've tried both with and without the svideo cable connected, does not finish
booting either way.

[Bug 664827] [NEW] BeagleBoard xM freezes while attempting to boot 10.10

2010-10-21 Thread Brett Mahar
Public bug reported:

I installed Maverick on a BeagleBoard xM-A2, following the instructions here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ARM/OMAPMaverickInstall

Since I am don't have a monitor with DVI-in, I adjusted the bootargs, as per:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ARM/BeagleEditBootscr

This was done by following:

Strip the 72byte long uboot header:
dd if=boot.scr of=boot.script bs=1 skip=72

Open the file in an editor and edit the setenv bootargs line to add/remove
bootoptions:
setenv bootargs vram=12M console=ttyS2,115200n8 serialtty=ttyS2
omapfb.mode=tv:pal root=/dev/mmcblk0p2 fixrtc

/usr/bin/mkimage -A arm -T script -C none -n Ubuntu boot script -d
boot.script boot.scr #done as root on fedora desktop

Then copied the newly created boot.scr file on my SD card replacing the
existing one.

But when I tried to boot, with s-video connected to my pal-format tv,
and with only the 5volt power and serial port connected. Both ways it
freezes after minicom has displayed the following:

1. First attempt with svideo connected:

I also tried copying over the MLO and u-boot.bin from Angstrom image (the sd
card that is shipped with beagle xm), which was suggested on a beagle howto
site, but same freezing point was reached.

I have previously been able to boot and use the demo Angstrom iamge that
came with the beagle, and minimal Ubuntu 10.10 from
http://elinux.org/BeagleBoardUbuntu#Maverick_10.10_2

boot.cmd changed to include argument omapdss.def_disp=tv, and that took my all

However, once I reset the beagle to test it would let me login it freezes

[Bug 651008] Re: Regression in wireless performance under Maverick when on battery power (broadcom)

2010-10-18 Thread Brett McLean
I can confirm this behavior on the Dell Mini 10v (Dell Inspiron 1011).
Speeds are roughly 30 Mbits/s through iperf when plugged into power but
drop to approximately 3 Mbits/s when running on battery power.

lspci reveals my wireless card to be:
03:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4322 802.11a/b/g/n Wireless
LAN Controller (rev 01)

I can verify that David Guest's suggestion of using

 sudo iwconfig eth1 power off

works to bring wireless networking back up to expected speeds.

[Bug 658632] Re: Race condition between encrypted-home and Gnome theme (?)

2010-10-17 Thread Brett Hoerner
OK, I haven't seen Ambiance but once since I installed, so it may not be
a race condition.

I still cannot select Ambiance as my theme, instead Gnome is forcing me
to use this very plain Windows 95 looking default.

[Bug 662214] [NEW] visualvm (Java) fonts are out of whack. Huge, blocky text is used everywhere.

2010-10-17 Thread Brett Hoerner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: visualvm

In Maverick, the visualvm fonts are *huge* and ugly. It's hard to
actually use the app like this.

This did not occur in Lucid. I am using Sun JDK 6 from apt, and will
include a screenshot comparing Eclipse (which works great) and visualvm
running at the same time.

[Bug 658632] Re: Gnome theme changes from Ambiance to plain default after first reboot, can't be changed back.

2010-10-12 Thread Brett Hoerner
I believe it's actually a race condition with encrypted home folders.
I've rebooted 10 times since and *one* time I had the correct theme.
Does Gnome maybe try to read my config before my home is fully mounted?
What's odd is that I still can't go to Appearances and change it to
Ambiance.

** Summary changed:

- Gnome theme changes from Ambiance to plain default after first reboot, can't
be changed back.
+ Race condition between encrypted-home and Gnome theme (?)

** Description changed:

I just installed Maverick 10.10 AMD64 Desktop. After the first boot
  everything looked great.

I then setup my typical environment, which basically includes installing
a bunch of packages. I didn't change any Appearance options at all.
After rebooting, my theme is now a very boring and ugly one (I believe
the Gnome default). I cannot change it back to Ambiance in Appearance
- settings. If I create a new non-admin user, he has Ambiance. If I
- create an admin user, he has the crappy theme.
+ settings. If I create a new user, he has Ambiance. If I login to my
+ user, he has the crappy theme.
+
+ Update: I've had Ambiance load once in 10 reboots, see comment below,
+ the only thing I can think of is that I use encrypted home.

I'd be happy to provide more information or try anything to make my
  desktop less ugly.

[Bug 585209] Re: .odt and .ods open with fileroller instead of openoffice

2010-10-07 Thread Brett Alton
When I upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10, the error still appeared. I created
a new user, moved over all my documents (but not my preferences) and the
error no long occurs. So it appears something corrupted a vital
preference but I'm not sure what. The user account that still has the
error on my machine still exists if you need further testing.

Lastly, when I right-clicked the document and said 'Open with
OpenOffice.org Writer' (if it was .odt) would open OpenOffice.org
Writer, but it wouldn't retrieve the file requested, instead just opened
'Untitled1'.

[Bug 334544] Re: indicator applet needs keyboard shortcut

2010-09-21 Thread Brett Johnson
I highly recommend AGAINST using Super+S as it's already the default
shortcut for the window grouping plugin in compiz and has been for
sometime. Just went to enable it on my maverick build and Super+S is
bringing up the indicator applet instead of window grouping as the
indicator applet is taking precedence.

Ev][L's post above details what I believe is a workaround they found for
the problem but I couldn't find anyone who voiced the problem in the
first place above hence my post (if I missed it please excuse the double
post).

Again though - alt + control + s makes more sense over super + s. Alt +
F1 brings up the Applications menu. Maybe Super + F1 would work also?
Either way the current Super + S is conflicting.

[Bug 480477] Re: [rt2860] frequent connection instability/loss on not optimal network quality.

2010-08-15 Thread Brett Glasson
I can confirm this bug. I have an Acer Revo running 10.04 as a media
streamer and it is effectively useless. WLAN drops out every two minutes
with logs filled up with messages as follows;

Aug 16 13:57:14 mercury kernel: [79937.264113] ===rt_ioctl_giwscan. 1(1) BSS
returned, data-length = 137
Aug 16 13:57:25 mercury dhclient: DHCPREQUEST of 10.1.1.85 on wlan0 to 10.1.1.1
port 67

Aug 16 13:59:14 mercury dhclient: last message repeated 3 times
Aug 16 13:59:14 mercury kernel: [80057.260104] ===rt_ioctl_giwscan. 1(1) BSS
returned, data-length = 137

port 67
Aug 16 14:00:29 mercury dhclient: last message repeated 5 times

BTW, why is this bug marked as low importance?

2010-07-14 Thread Brett Alton
This is occuring to me too in Ubuntu 10.04 w all the updates

It was running fine and then all of a sudden it exits on two different
errors. I tried purging and reinstalling and deleting any preferences I
could find but to no avail.

$ cheese
Gtk-ERROR **: List item does not match its index: item index 236 and list index
235
$ cheese
Segmentation fault

The command:

GST_DEBUG=*cheese*:3 cheese -v 21 | tee cheese.log

returns and empty file.

[Bug 581566] Re: udevd inotify_add_watch no such directory error for physical volumes

2010-07-08 Thread Brett Stahlman
Installing cryptsetup fixed it for me too, but I don't really consider this to
be a fix. I don't need cryptsetup, and don't like the idea that I'm loading
something I don't need upon every boot to mask a bug. I notice this bug is
confirmed but still unassigned. Is it considered low priority? I've just
installed Ubuntu 10.04, but am considering wiping it out and switching to
Debian because of this and another (login screen freeze) issue I've had since
installing Ubuntu.
Thanks,
Brett Stahlman

[Bug 465485] Re: Split Tracks burn to disc in reverse order

2010-06-18 Thread Jon Brett
Also seeing the same issue as in comment #2.

I use the split track into a fixed number of parts to split a 41
minute audio track into 4 parts. The parts 1,2,3,4, will be burnt onto
the CD in the order 2,3,4,1.

Running 9.04 Karmic, amd64, 2.6.32-23-generic, using package
2.30.1-0ubuntu2.

I also remember seeing the same problem when using xfburn on my previous
Arch Linux amd64 system, so maybe its a problem with a library shared
between both xfburn and brasero.

[Bug 586416] [NEW] irc client hangs after screensaver

2010-05-27 Thread Brett Ketter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xchat

Ubuntu 10.04

opens but the channel list pane is completely unresponsive to any mouse
clicks.

[Bug 586074] Re: Nautilus thumbnailer is throwing SQLite error

2010-05-27 Thread Brett Alton
It was /desktop/gnome/thumbnailers/t...@html

gnome-web-photo --mode=thumbnail --timeout=16 --size=%s %u %o

The error stopped popping up when I disabled it.

What should I do now? How do I trace this bug so it gets fixed?

[Bug 585209] [NEW] .odt and .ods open with fileroller instead of openoffice

2010-05-24 Thread Brett Alton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Using Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx, whenever I try and open an ODT or ODS
document over SFTP, (see [1]) , Archive Manager (or fileroller) is
opened instead. I right-click Properties Open With [tab] select
OpenOffice.org Speadsheet (for ODS) and OpenOffice.org Word Processor
(for ODT). I also change right click Open with Other Application... to
the appropriate application and it still seems to open with Archive
Manager.

Something really funky has been up with Nautilus over SFTP for some
time, because I'm had numerous bugs where Nautilus can't support
.htaccess[2] and other file types. It's like over SFTP, the file
association that I'm used to on my local hard drive just disappears.

Similar but older and closed bug[3]

removing the package details and then attempted a re-install with the same

Public bug reported:

Unfortunately running

works (including selecting the area, recording, playback, etc.) but when

[Bug 577224] [NEW] Checkbox doesn't recognize that the .config/checkbox settings have been moved from one PC to another

2010-05-07 Thread Brett Alton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: checkbox

I did a mass copy of my /home drive when I bought a new laptop. That
means all my settings were copied as well. Both laptops were on Lucid,
however, checkbox did not recognize that the .config/checkbox/ file had
been moved and my hardware had changed. So I ran checkbox on my new
laptop and was about to send the report but when I viewed it, I noticed
it had my old hardware listed.

Of course, I now deleted .config/checkbox and this possibly could be a
user error depending on how you look at it, but that means the program
will be sending erroneous data if this isn't fixed.

[Bug 576487] [NEW] Bos wars says real-time strategy but doesn't appear when I search real-time strategy

2010-05-06 Thread Brett Alton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

The title says most of it... basically the description of the program is
not used when searching. I'm not sure if it's a bug in the search
algorithm or if the description in Ubuntu Software Center just isn't
used while searching, but either way, I can't search real-time
strategy to find real time strategy games. Maybe the solutions is to be
able to tag programs?

[Bug 563200] Re: package dahdi-dkms 1:2.2.1+dfsg-1ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: dahdi kernel module failed to build

2010-04-30 Thread Brett Sutton
This was also a problem in 9.10 as well as 9.10 server.
It appears that the linux headers installed don't match the current linux
kernel version.

After the ubuntu upgrade completed I re-run
apt-get install dahdi-dkms

This fix the problem.

I wonder if there is some sort of install order issue where the required
headers are not installed until after dahdi is built.
In 9.10 server it appeared that apt-get install linux-headers was installing a
version of the headers that was more recent than the running kernel. I don't
know if that somehow relates to this problem.

[Bug 237386] Re: [needs-packaging] RabbitVCS

2010-04-29 Thread Brett Alton
Updated the description because the project is now called RabbitVCS
(http://rabbitvcs.org/) and I think is in Debian Testing (according to
their blog: http://blog.rabbitvcs.org/archives/218)

** Summary changed:

- [needs-packaging] NautilusSvn
+ [needs-packaging] RabbitVCS

** Description changed:

- License : GNU GPL v2
+ License: GNU GPL v2
+ Homepage: http://rabbitvcs.org/
+ Launchpad: https://launchpad.net/rabbitvcs/
+ PPA: https://launchpad.net/~rabbitvcs/+archive/ppa/
+ -- Currently in Debian testing --

- Homepage : http://jasonfield.com/freebies/
+ RabbitVCS is a set of graphical tools written to provide simple and
+ straightforward access to the version control systems you use.
+ Currently, it is integrated into the Nautilus file manager and only
+ supports Subversion, but our goal is to incorporate other version
+ control systems as well as other file managers.

- This great project is a Subversion client totally implemented in Gnome ! (
icons )
- So, for Svn users, this project is the better !
-
- Thanks to all of you !
+ RabbitVCS is inspired by TortoiseSVN and others.

[Bug 561083] [NEW] Gnome Sound Recorder 2.28.1 records corrupt m4a

2010-04-11 Thread Brett Berry
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-media

I am using Ubuntu 9.10.
Problem stems from package: gnome-media:
  Installed: 2.28.1-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 2.28.1-0ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 2.28.1-0ubuntu1 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com karmic/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

On Thursday, I used the Gnome Sound Recorder 2.28.1 to record audio from
a mixing board, via my laptop's microphone input. I recorded as CD
Quality .MP3. When I finished recording, the file played very nicely.

The next day I used the same Gnome Sound Recorder 2.28.1 to record audio
from the same mixing board, via the same laptop's microphone input. I
recorded this time as CD Quality AAC, .m4a. When I finished
recording, I tried to play back the file. Unfortunately, I received a
This file contains no playable streams error from Exaile. I then
tried to make a simple recording using my laptop's built in microphone,
using the m4a setting. I received the same error when trying to play
back the file.

It seems that my Gnome Sound Recorder 2.28.1 cannot record a valid m4a
file, when configured to use that setting.

Please let me know if I am missing something.

Please let me know if there is any way to fix my seemingly corrupted
file, as it was the only recording from a sound board from this
particular performance.

I am attaching the smaller of the m4a files I tried to create.

Thank you,
-Brett Berry
