Or just use Chrome now that profiles are as simple as right clicking in the
top left corner...

Firefox is so 2005.

[Bug 1070150] Re: Intermittent low graphics mode with Intel HD graphics

2013-01-17 Thread ChrisKelley
Same bug here. Fresh 12.10 install on Gateway DX4860-UR11P desktop:
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40GHz
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core
Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09) (prog-if 00 [VGA
controller])
Subsystem: Acer Incorporated [ALI] Device 0589
Kernel driver in use: i915
Kernel modules: i915
SSD: Crucial M4 CT128M4SSD2 2.5 128GB SATA III MLC

Bought it, disconnected windows HDD, install fresh SSD + Ubuntu 12.04.
12.04 did not have this issue for me but I was unable to upgrade (uefi
problems) so this is with format and fresh install of 12.10 on the SSD.
Trying /etc/rc.local fix if that doesn't work, I'll install gdm.

Does this mean we can login, find and kill gnome-settings-deamon and

[Bug 598331] Re: Touchscreen inverted x-axis evtouch driver

2010-06-29 Thread ChrisKelley
I just attempted in ubuntu 10.04 the procedure which worked in 9.04 ...
and it did not work.

apt-get install xserver-xorg-input-evtouch:
- does NOT create the file 50-touchkit.fdi in
/usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/20thirdparty
- does NOT install calibrate_touchscreen
- when 50-touchkit.fdi is copied to here from working ubuntu 9.04 installation,
the touchscreen changes behavior (pointer stays in bottom right corner)

It is my opinion that changes were made between 9.04 and 10.04 that
simply omitted some of what is required for the driver to behave the
same as it had in previous installations.

[Bug 598331] Re: Touchscreen inverted x-axis evtouch driver

2010-06-29 Thread ChrisKelley
I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.04 amd64 on this same computer.
Then I did apt-get install xserver-xorg-input-evtouch
Then edited /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/20thirdparty/50-touchkit??.fdi to reflect
the hardware I'm using.
Reboot and now works as desired. swapx=1 in this fdi file re-verted the x axis
to normal. I won't winge about calibrate_touchscreen not being perfect ... just
having the x axis in the right direction is happiness.
*note: in order for the changes to the .fdi file to reflect on lshal, you must
restart the computer!!* hot-plugging the usb port makes no effect.

BTW all of these other distribution installs had identical inverted
x-axis that were seemingly without a fix: Ubuntu 10.04 netbook remix,
Ubuntu 10.04 x86_64 desktop, ubuntu 8.04 amd64 desktop, puppy linux 5.1,
slitaz linux

I will try again this recipe on the ubuntu 10.04 netbook remix partition
I have on that same computer ... just to make sure it does or does not
work.

Thanks,
Chris

[Bug 598331] [NEW] Touchscreen inverted x-axis evtouch driver

2010-06-24 Thread ChrisKelley
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-evtouch

I did try to report this via command line: ubuntu-bug xserver-xorg-
input-evtouch

Monitor is Dell E15FPTc with Microtouch / 3M touch screen.
Distro: Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Remix
System: Acer Aspire R1600 (like a mini-pc)
Behavior:
- x axis is backwards
- x axis is shifted slightly to side
+ Drag works
+ y axis is somewhat close
? Can't confirm if it can double click

Things I have tried to fix:
- install PuppyLinux, lubuntu, ubuntu desktop x86_64 (all with same
result/behavior on default install)
- all of these efforts were then done in the netbook installation...
- installed xserver-xorg-input-evtouch
- used fdi file from
http://old.nabble.com/evtouch-fdi-file-for-IDEACO-IDC-6680-touchscreen-td19048740.html
as starting point for attached file I called 10-delltouch.fdi
- Installed hal, started hald as a service, found the device by lshal
- confirmed that any changes to my fdi (new options, different vales) file were
executed by then running
lshal -lu
/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/usb_device_596_1_noserial_if0_logicaldev_input
- swapped minx maxx values (no effect)
- added swapx true value (no effect)
- added rotate cw (no effect)

[Bug 598331] Re: Touchscreen inverted x-axis evtouch driver

2010-06-24 Thread ChrisKelley
Tried uninstalling evtouch and removed my fdi file to see what would

(II) config/udev: Adding input device MicroTouch Systems, Inc. 3M USB

Now I put the fdi file back and without installing evtouch, here is Xorg.0.log:

Touchscreen - Dell (/dev/input/event7)
(**) MicroTouch Systems, Inc. 3M USB Touchscreen - Dell: Applying InputClass

(II) MicroTouch Systems, Inc. 3M USB Touchscreen - Dell: initialized for

I did this last test to see if the option type=finger would make a
difference. It didn't. Note that is says evtouch driver, but it has been
apt-get removed...

Use xrandr to find your monitor names then xrandr --output MONITORNAME
--primary

Then add that as a command to your System-preferences-Startup menu.

Reference: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=9489366

There should be a tickbox on the Monitor Preferences dialog along with
the monitors to set the primary monitor.

[Bug 393268] [NEW] khotkeys: keyboard input broken and missing

2009-06-28 Thread ChrisKelley
Public bug reported:

Hi, I'm a long time user of kde3 and am trying kubuntu 9.04 x86_64 with
KDE 4.2.2. This is a fresh install on a core duo Dell D630 laptop. I
have several keyboard input type of hotkeys setup which dramatically
speed my email work.

In KDE4.2.2 I use System Settings - Input Actions to get to the hotkeys
configuring interface. When checking in the Examples section, I
enabled the group and also the Type 'Hello' action. But nowhere is the
ability to set what is typed, nor does it actually work. There should be
a way to alter it in the Actions tab, but its area is empty.

I checked ~/.kde/share/khotkeysrc and found what I expected...
[Data_1_2]
Comment= [ snip ]
Enabled=true
Name=Type 'Hello'
Type=SIMPLE_ACTION_DATA

[Data_1_2Actions]
ActionsCount=1

[Data_1_2Actions0]
ActiveWindow=false
Input=Shift+H:E:L:L:O\n
IsDestinationWindow=false
Type=KEYBOARD_INPUT

I also tried using the relevant Data_x_x section from my previous khotkeysrc,
which made the section and my old inputs show up in System Settings - Input
Actions but the keyboard inputs don't work. My other hotkeys for launching
programs does work though.

I really look forward to finding a solution so I can start using kubuntu
9.04 and KDE4.2.2 at work. Is there any other info I can help with?

Thanks,
Chris

Re: [Bug 47649] Re: Landscape PDF printed as portrait (and truncated)

2008-12-15 Thread ChrisKelley
So this is now an invalid bug? Does that mean that kubuntu is an invalid
distro, too?

Apologies for the sarcasm, but the typical response to bug reports I have
taken part of is to minimize investigation, disbelieve reports, and quickly
assign a bug status that implies there is no problem. While this is not a
show stopping issue for me (I just go use one of our windows PCs to print
PDFs when kpdf is unable to), this is the kind of mentality that will
certainly prevent more than an elite minority of users to enjoy linux.

How about creating a bug status of This is a bug, but right now, we can't
handle the load ??

OK, back to your regular scheduled programming...

FWIW, with the Brother HL5250DN driver in the standard install, I can
print duplex, but as with above, all areas to select landscape are
grayed out. I then installed xpdf and now understand why it is called
unacceptable! I can landscape but cannot duplex, as there are no
printing options.

gpdf is not available:

This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or

[Bug 119862] Re: KDevelop crashes randomly

2008-07-17 Thread ChrisKelley
Hi! Somehow, I have been with ubuntu for over a year and only just
learned about kdevelop. I *really* like its code completion.

However, after my initial creation of a project, I, too, am having
crashing. Unfortunately, mine crashes quite frequently -- enough that
it's unusable. :-( Except for one time crashing upon start up, all times
have been while adding 3 to 10 lines of code to an existing file. I'm
working on php/mysql pages slowly and methodically, so only small
changes happen at a time.

I will try to describe all that I can about what could be my
peculiarities. Initially, I thought that closing parenthesis caused it,
as I will start if statements like this: if (){}, typed quickly. This
caused crashes often enough that I stopped doing that. After typing
that, I normally use left arrow to get into the logic test then end,
left arrow, enter to begin working between the braces. The backtrace I
have is from one of these times.

The latest times, it crashed upon launch or shortly thereafter and the
backtrace window said there was no info possibly to corrupted stack (?).

My situation... I have 3 computers involved with my development. 2
notebooks and a server. One notebook and the server are at work, the
other notebook at home. All of the files are .php, all are on the
server. To connect and work with the files, I use sshfs to mount part of
the path under my home on the laptop. I do this from both laptops.

I thought there was chance the work laptop kdevelop being open and
this one at home being open at the same time could be a problem, so I
ssh'd into the work laptop and killed the kdevelop process on the work
laptop. No change.

OH... this problem got REAL BAD when I start creating new files and
haven't done anything to add them to the project or rescan the
project. (I'll report back if this helps or I better understand how to
do this)

[Bug 119862] Re: KDevelop crashes randomly

2008-07-17 Thread ChrisKelley
I did a rescan of the project and it was great for several minutes. Then
it crashed while I was typing:

if ( $_POST['action'] ==  *crash*

... and this was without me doing my usual if(){} sequence.

Thanks,
Chris

information back to whatever the entity is who should be listening and
trying to actually fix bugs. In fact, rather than re-install Ubuntu,
my first project is to set up a thin client so that my productivity

[Bug 177262] Re: firefox -ProfileManager does not open profile manager

2008-01-31 Thread ChrisKelley
I normally use profiles (3 concurrantly) ... interestingly enough, if
they already exist in your home directory, you can choose from them.
Some misbehaviors: On my kubuntu computer, I leave /home alone and then
reformat everything else for the upgrade/fresh install from Fiesty to
Gutsy. I notice no problems and my 3 profiles work as they did before.

I do a fresh install of xubuntu onto another computer and copy .mozilla
from the kubuntu computer and I only get the profile designated as
default in ~/.mozilla/firefox/profiles.ini by Default=1 option. Nothing
will allow me to open profile manager nor am I able to evoke the other
profiles as I am on the other computer. I'll try messing with the values
in profile.ini to see if I can get to my other profiles.

That's certainly a more serious issue, can you please file a new bug?

Hi Tormod,

Thanks for writing back. No, the problem I have is that I am unable to
disable the quiet option. It is always quiet during boot. This
feature is unique to my Dell D630 Intel laptop.

Every other ubuntu install I have configured to watch the console as
the computer boots up. I have 6 ubuntu computers:
Dell D630 notebook Intel core-duo with ICH8 family chipset: Kubuntu Gutsy x86_64
Sony vaio sz220 notebook intel duo-core ICH7 chipset: Xubuntu Gutsy
Dell C521 dimension desktop #1 AMD athlon 64 edubuntu lts dapper
Dell C521 dimension desktop #2 AMD athlon 64 ubuntu server gutsy
Dell C521 dimension desktop #3 AMD athlon 64 ubuntu server gutsy
hp e-pc Pentium 4 Xubuntu gutsy

It would not irritate me so much if it wasn't the computer I spend the
most time on. And it is this one I spend the most time watching it
boot ... with nothing to show for its progress. My LTS server:
$ uptime
 03:29:43 up 110 days

And I only rebooted because I noticed the kernel version had changed a
number of times since the last reboot. :)

Thanks,
Chris

2008-01-29 Thread ChrisKelley
Hi Tormod,

Thanks for writing back. Ah, yes. I understand better now. Then my
humble suggestion would be to mention /etc/default/grub and the
supports_quiet=false option within the comments of menu.lst (the
magically reappearing quiet grub option is what brought my annoying
self here) :) That would satisfy this software engineer, recently
converted to linux.

Thanks and I go away now (happily) :)

bug. See the Ubuntu grub source debian/patches/quiet.diff for more
 information.

Just for comparison: the kernel quiet option (or parameter) - the one
that is on the kernel line - tells the kernel to be less verbose, and is
also probed for by the start-up scripts (see /usr/share/initramfs-
 tools/init and /usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/init-top/usplash and
/etc/init.d/rc). This bug report is not about this one.

Re: [Bug 137136] Re: no way to configure update-grub not to set 'quiet' option in menu.lst non-recovery stanzas

2008-01-01 Thread ChrisKelley
No matter the steps I take, I cannot un-quiet my Gusty install. One of
the first things I do (after fixing apt's sources.list) is to undo the
splash and quiet. I've done it all and can't get it to show the
startup like it did with fiesty. I don't know if Gutsy does this to
our servers (as opposed to Fiesty) as the first apt-get they receive
is ssh so I can go back to my desk.

Once I get caught up with work, I'll research how to create a bug
since even with the fixed steps I cannot undo this feature.
Basically, I consider forcing quiet and blanking the screen akin to
some of the dumbing down microsoft does to protect people from seeing
how things work.

[Bug 137136] Re: no way to configure update-grub not to set 'quiet' option in menu.lst non-recovery stanzas

2007-11-21 Thread ChrisKelley
Hi Tormod, thanks for your answer, as I always re-edited menu.lst to remove the
quiet lines which update-grub always wrote. None of my ubuntu distributions
have a /etc/default/grub file; do you mean we create that file with the line
supports_quiet=false ? imho, this should be the default, as the menu.lst
already has quiet splash set as options. I believe the normal user would
believe when they remove quiet that it should stay removed.

[Bug 62986] Re: debconf-apt-progress hangs sometimes on SMP systems due to racy debconf protocol handling

2007-11-20 Thread ChrisKelley
Hi all, I just found this via Google. Was attempting a net install to a
Pentium 4 I just got. The first failure bricked the box. Now I set up
pxe server and it has frozen again. First time was at 5%, now at 6%. Was
using ubuntu gutsy alt cd and this time, xubuntu alt cd from the pxe
server. Not real sure how to go forward. Will keep trying. Next, will
try to tell it to read from the CD-ROM (which the bios/mo-board cannot
boot from). If there is a way I can give more info, please reply.

Oh, wait... Wow, 40~50 minutes after it froze at 6%, it picked up again.
(literally, just this instant) The first time, I selected LAMP server
and some stuff, this time only Xubuntu desktop. Looks like it's running
now.

If you did update/upgrade from fiesty, it is probably more issue with
the kernel than this error message and dhcdbd. I made my entry on this
a long time ago. IMHO, the output of this bug is pretty irrelevant and
the impact people have is varied and certainly unrelated to the code
which makes this bug.

I will agree though, that the dhcdbd package has a big effect on a
system and that if something isn't configured (where/how? got me), the
symptoms reported in this thread can occur. I've had real good luck
with eliminating all other error messages, too, like the another one

Re: [Bug 109064] Re: Boot-up option 'Start or install Ubuntu' scares new users

2007-09-04 Thread ChrisKelley
Hi Matthew,

I like the words test drive.

Something that wouldn't scare me so much to try would be a menu like:

Ubuntu
- Test Drive Ubuntu (without any change to your computer)
- Install Ubuntu
- [other options]
- [...]

That's something I would try at my desk without fear of harming my
fragile windows setup. Seriously, people who are most likely to switch
to linux are those who are the most fearful of harming their windows
configuration. I can't wait to get our production PC off of winXP, but
we're working on it one step at a time. Messing with that computer is
almost a fire-able offense around here.

How about the concept of seeking out windows computer users at a
campus and simply asking them their thoughts? When I recently chose
kubuntu, it was after seeking out a change from windows. If I had
stumbled upon ubuntu on my own before I was motivated and wanting to
switch, none of what I read here would have helped me to try

Once before, I chased down this code through the network if scripts and
couldn't see an easy workaround.

remove the former video package and add video-xorg-intel for the

imho, preview ubuntu as a first choice. Would be great if another was
