@jsalisbury: just to be clear: it's confirmed that jumping from 4.2.0.27
to the current repo version of linux-image-generic, 4.2.0.34.37, should
be safe and avoid this bug?

[Bug 1410495] [NEW] Battery indicator goes Critical Red with more than 1 hour battery left

2015-01-13 Thread Christoph Buchner
Public bug reported:

On my current laptop, the battery indicator shows a red-with-a-little-
left icon when there is more than an hour left in the battery, which is
not really appropriate for a critical battery warning.

This bug is probably a regression of #743823, and I was asked to create a new
bug by @mpt:
Christoph, yes, please report a new bug including a screenshot. On phones we
may have to color by percentage, but on PCs we can and should color by time
 remaining to avoid false alarms.

A screenshot is attached. Unfortunately I didn't realize at the time
that the screenshotter does not record open menus, so you'll have to
take my word that the time remaining in the indicator menu was at 1
hour. I can redo the screenshot, if necessary.

fwiw, the transition levels (based on minutes left) proposed in the bug
description of #743823 sound good to me.

[Bug 1388235] Re: Battery icon turns red at 30%

2014-12-30 Thread Christoph Buchner
Also, please keep e.g. laptop use in mind when designing this. I'm currently on
a laptop, and the battery indicator shows a red-with-a-little-left icon, when I
have 1h10min of battery left (which feels a bit ridiculous). The percentage is
at 22%.
See also the previous bug #743823, which apparently has regressed since 2011?

Thanks.
Unfortunately, this was requested over 2 years ago, so by now the latest

we could play catch-up, and I could file a new bug, but I don't need the latest

[Bug 1072270] Re: ntfs-3g Transport endpoint is not connected, fuse implicated

2014-01-14 Thread Christoph Buchner
Robert, I think the need for pacakge upgrade has been superseded in the
meantime by fuse 2.9.2-4 already being packaged in Saucy.

Furthermore, Matteo apparently still encounters this even with the
upgraded package. I'm not sure that that is not a different bug, as I
and, judging by the comments, some others, have not encountered the bug
since upgrading.

Re: bug heat: If it doesn't mean anything, why is it there, then? I
thought it somehow weighted the importance of a bug as derived from
visitor attention/frequency, comment activity, and so forth, so that
annoying but overlooked/misprioritized bugs can be noticed more easily?

[Bug 1130713] Re: Empathy doesn't open when clicking messages - chat in system tray

2013-06-19 Thread Christoph Buchner
I got this bug, too. in fact, pretty often it's impossible to get to the

When I got one chat window open, clicking on empathy in the messaging menu does
nothing.
Closing the chat window, then clicking on empathy in the messaging menu does
nothing.
I can't even quit empathy to start it again, short of killall empathy, that
can't right?

Agreed on this. the first couple of times I used this, I actually thought it
had crashed silently, instead of completing successfully. It's really strangely
designed UX.
Additionally, one time it just disappeared, and I assumed (from earlier
experience) that it had completed successfully, until a bit later a crash
report dialog popped up, and it turned out it had actually crashed!

[Bug 1044055] Re: online-accounts does not allow a way to disable a particular application

2012-10-29 Thread Christoph Buchner
I would take the liberty to +1 this for a similar scenario:
Not only is granularity in the integrated applications per account impossible,
as Jamie reports, but also the other way round: It's impossible to restrict the
permission set for a single account. For example, adding a Google account
includes access to Gmail, GDocs, Google+, Youtube, Picasa.
What if I want to restrict where my Google account data gets used? For using
google talk with Empathy, I had to authorize a Google account because the
Jabber account I used for previously without problem refuses to connect in
12.10 (like
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/empathy/+bug/1069531/comments/15). I
have no interest though in other parts of my google account being integrated in
Ubuntu (e.g. Youtube). I'm not the only one with this gripe
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/empathy/+bug/1069531/comments/16).

I think this fits in this bug report. If not tell me, and I'll submit a
separate one.

[Bug 1069902] [NEW] packages-to-remove dialog should allow user to toggle exceptions

2012-10-22 Thread Christoph Buchner
Public bug reported:

I think this is the right package to report this feature request
against. I also searched update-manager bugs but couldn't find a
duplicate.

On upgrading Ubuntu, after the new packages have been installed and
configured, the user is presented with a dialog offering a (typically
great) number of old/obsolete packages, and the only options are to
either Keep or Remove them all.

Normally, it's a good idea to remove the old packages. In the case that
the user wants to remove all of them except one, because whatever
algorithm is behind this has a false positive, or for some other reason,
this is not possible - it's either keep them all, or remove them all. It
would be great if the list of packages had checkboxes where you could
exempt certain packages from being kept/removed.

(In my case, on upgrading from Precise to Quantal, I would have liked to
keep a self-installed package of an old/unmaintained application -
bouml - that the release-upgrader wanted to remove.)

Well, the original description mentions Nautilus only as one possibility (say

apps than Nautilus. So I still disagree about the dupe status.
However, I'll let this rest for now until I can show reliable repro for apps
other than Nautilus, maybe it's already fixed for those anyway. I'm currently
mostly forced to use unity-2d due to a bad bug in unity.

[Bug 996008] Re: GUI slows down significantly after random period of time.

2012-06-06 Thread Christoph Buchner
For the record, I have tried booting with the irqpoll option, does not
help.

Doing echo 'options nvidia NVreg_EnableMSI=1'
/etc/modprobe.d/nvidia.conf as recommended in that post you linked does
apparently not activate MSI for nvidia as intended. There was no file
with that name in that directory, but several otehr nvidia* files
(nvidia-current-updates_hybrid.conf, nvidia-current_hybrid.conf, nvidia-
graphics-drivers.conf). I did not know which one to add that option to,
if necessary.

However, using dmesg | grep MSI to check for enabled MSI, the following drew my
attention:
hda_intel: Disabling MSI
hda_intel is one of the modules which conflicts on irq11, I think
(/proc/interrupts says on 11: ohci_hcd:usb2, snd_hda_intel, nvidia), so I'll
further investigate. I have a theory that on precise, the MSI for the sound
driver has been disabled for some reason, creating this conflict in the first
place.

I have to be a bit careful about wildly changing system settings, as
this is a production machine and I can't currently afford to lose it for
an extended period of time if I have to nuke the system and reinstall or
whatever.

my /proc/interrupts shows ohci_hcd:usb2, snd_hda_intel, nvidia on the

Does anybody know something to do (a command to run or whatever) to
alleviate this error if it occurs? For me, only a reboot helps.

[Bug 903647] [NEW] Misleading error message when not using sudo

2011-12-13 Thread Christoph Buchner
Public bug reported:

I just did a fresh install of fail2ban on Ubuntu Oneiric.
When using fail2ban-client without sudo, the given error messages are
misleading, or don't point out that you need admin privileges to do what you
want.

For example, fail2ban-client status gives
ERROR Unable to contact server. Is it running? even if the server is
actually running.
If, as a new user, you react to that message by starting the server with
fail2ban-client status, you get, after some other logging messages,
ERROR Could not start server. Maybe an old socket file is still present. Try
to remove /var/run/fail2ban/fail2ban.sock. If you used fail2ban-client to start
the server, adding the -x option will do it
but neither the -x option not manually removing /var/run/fail2ban/fail2ban.sock
will solve this error - very confusing.

Interestingly, I haven't found this requirement anywhere in the docs
(though in hindsight, it's logical that privileges would be needed .).
I'm also not the only one with this problem, as I finally found the
solution here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1682296

huh, interesting. I just found out that the current 32bit version in ubuntu

[Bug 870969] Re: Microphone doesn't work on Skype or Flash

2011-11-12 Thread Christoph Buchner
what do you mean? the bug manifests itself in skype.

anyway, the solution posted in this thread seems to work:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=11448296postcount=4
In pavucontrol, unlinking the left/right microphone channels and turning the
RIGHT channel all the way DOWN, and the LEFT channel up, seems to solve the
problem.
Does that give some directions as to where the bug could be (solved)?

[Bug 268267] Re: Explain the implications of suggested tweaks

I agree, this needs more information.
On one machine I have ~15 bad tunables, but I don't dare to switch on most of
them, because I have no idea about the (negative) consequences, what I could
break (or if the changes are harmless), if they revert on boot, what kind of
power savings they bring (maybe difficult to predict, or how to get back if
they break the system.

[Bug 887787] [NEW] [HDA Intel, playback] mute button does not work

2011-11-08 Thread Christoph Buchner
Public bug reported:

I got an HP8530w laptop. Up until Oneiric, the hardware mute button (actually a
touch-button) was working as expected. With the upgrade to Oneiric (I think, I
use it seldomly), the hardware button stopped muting/unmuting. It changes
color, though, as if it worked. The touchstrip for volume control still works
as expected.

accordance with the bug title (upgrade to 3.7.1.), and therefore 'fixed' status
is wrong. Sorry if something else was implied.

2011-09-23 Thread Christoph Buchner
So yout comment implies that this could change in Oneiric+1, why not
mark/milestone it as such? And by won't be a concern do you mean will
be ignored by unity?

[Bug 811003] Re: Psensor application indicator should use a mono-color icon

2011-09-18 Thread Christoph Buchner
OK, V2, including light theme and 3 hot variants, choose which one looks
best.

Regarding the launcher, these icons were designed for use in the app indicator
(I followed existing icons in size and placement, so I think it makes sense the
way it is.
For launcher icons, different guidelines should be followed (e.g.
http://tango.freedesktop.org/Tango_Icon_Theme_Guidelines). I'll try to find if
there are guidelines for launcher icons and see if I can whip up something
suitable.

[Bug 811003] Re: Psensor application indicator should use a mono-color icon

2011-09-17 Thread Christoph Buchner
OK, here we go. I made icons for a dark theme, modeled on the colors of
the weather icons. Tell me if it fits, and I can also do a light one, or
you can change the colors yourself.

[Bug 646724] Re: not all files show up in files-place

2011-08-17 Thread Christoph Buchner
Seif, what happened to the dig up the past button you mentioned
further up? Is this coming? I remember seeing a mock-up screenshot
somewhere, but I don't have it in activity-log-manager 0.8.0 from the
zeitgeist ppa.

[Bug 748861] Re: icon for weather-clear (day only) is missing

2011-08-17 Thread Christoph Buchner
I agree (especially since it's easy). Daniel, do you have any input on
this, since it was shown that your assertion in comment #16 that the
icons are not in the lp branch is wrong?

[Bug 823132] Re: Autologin requires more password confirmation than normal logging

2011-08-17 Thread Christoph Buchner
have you already set an empty password for the login keyring? have you
then tried adding the entries for ubuntu one to the login keyring (if
it's not there already). does either of these help?

[Bug 772612] Re: maximized window is displaced

2011-08-12 Thread Christoph Buchner
hm, I have found another application with visibility issues with the new patch.
Rainlendar (a desktop calendar software, rainlendar.net) now has an invisible
(or weird ghost like the network applet) main window, rendering it unusable.
I think this patch has some unintended consequences.
