Re: [Bug 1578439] Re: reinstall of ubuntu grub failed to install on drive sda

2016-05-09 Thread David C. Findlay
Hi there,
Before I carried out the install I checked to see if there was a newer
bios for my motherboard and there was.
Updated it and then carried out the install from scratch using EFI mode.
The main drive C: is a 1TB SSD. but it is not seen as SDA1 but SDD1 so
the install i=of grub failed again.
I installed a program called boot-repair and ran it.
This allowed me to tell system to use SDD1 to install grub2 on.
This it did and system is now working fine.
I can now duel boot Windows 10 and Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.

 Thanks for your help.

   Yours faithfully,
   David C. Findlay.

Re: [Bug 1578439] Re: reinstall of ubuntu grub failed to install on drive sda

2016-05-08 Thread David C. Findlay
Hi there,
I have just confirmed using Paragon Hard Disk Manager 15 that both the disk
I am installing Linux onto and my main drive are Basic MBR Hard Drives. My
other drives are all GPT but they are solely Windows drives and therefore
have no effect on the install.
When the install askes me about it seeing an EFI type bios and ask it to
use the EFI install.
The install completes and then grub 2 fails to be written to the mbr of sda
which is also my C: drive for my windows install. I am going to rewrite the
MBR completely using windows recovery dos window and try again.

  Yours faithfully,
   David Findlay

[Bug 1310220] Re: System sound volume gets reduced when screen lock is activated

2016-02-24 Thread David C.
Hi there,

I have exactly the same issue. Also, when I mute the sound in my user
session and I lock the session, the sound goes unmuted and around the
60% level.

In my case, the sound levels mod it's instantly, no delay after session
lock.

Any idea will be appreciated :)

[Bug 1292290] Re: Window manager keybindings don't work after reboot

2014-11-19 Thread David C
There must be another variation in XFCE that makes the difference. I'm
running 14.04.1 w/XFCE 4.10.1 and xfce-settings 4.11.2-1ubuntu2.

I successfully cleared the settings for changing workspaces, multiple
times to even clear the default. Then I went back to the general
settings page, returned to Window Manager and then set the workspaces
to Super+1 thru 4. The settings then remained across login/outs and
reboots.

HTH.

I experience the same bug when trying to boot up 10.10 on a Dell Optiplex

[Bug 491111] [NEW] linux kernel 2.6.24.25-rt system hangs using network

2009-12-01 Thread David C
Public bug reported:

Use of network (WWW via Firefox (3.5), or Update Manager) causes complete
system lockup when running on my system with kernel 2.6.24.25-rt. This was
repeatable. The system appears to be fine using 2.6.24.24-rt.
There was no response to keyboard or mouse, the screen was not updating: a
reset was required for reboot.
The system is a fully patched 8.04 with proposed updates, plus backports.

[Bug 455939] Re: gnome-panels moves to second monitor on kms/ums switch

2009-10-25 Thread David C. Uhrig
I'm having this issue as well, but have discovered a work-around:

1) Right click on an existing panel, choose New Panel.
2) Right click on the new panel, choose Properties.
3) In the Properties window, uncheck Expand from the General Tab.
4) Change the Orientation option to what you want it to be on the new screen.
5) Drag the panel to where you want it to be on the new screen.
6) Put the check back in Expand and click on the Close button.

Hope this helps until it gets fixed!

[Bug 364891] [NEW] package ubuntu-desktop 1.102 failed to install/upgrade: dependency problems - leaving unconfigured

2009-04-21 Thread David C
Public bug reported:

I'm running 8.04 (HH) with proposed updates and the system is fully up to
date.
I had used another theme Blubuntu that I wished to remove and it was after
uninstalling Blubuntu that I forced an update of ubuntu-desktop. I'm not sure,
there may also have been an update to ubuntu-desktop too. However, I am sure
there was an upgrade of HAL that had failed to install.

This appears to have been caused by the upgrade of HAL not completing. This is
because the update of HAL cannot complete while HAL is running (meaning it
doesn't work from within the graphical Update Manager).
I fixed the HAL update (and the desktop one too) by
1) Starting a console session (ATL-CTRL-F1)
2) logged in
3) sudo killall gdm
4) sudo killall hald
(to ensure no HAL running).
5) sudo aptitude
this identified the two partially installed packages (HAL and Ubuntu-Desktop)
and completed their installation.
6) reboot

All fine now.

This problem of updates to HAL failing needs to be addressed: something
needs adding to the start-up so that in the event of hal updates, then
at the next reboot a dpkg is run to complete the HAL installation.
Normal users are not able to deal with this level of complexity.

[Bug 206634] Re: package hal 0.5.11~rc2-1ubuntu3 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2008-09-14 Thread David C
The following isn't a fix, but does workaround the problem of hal not
being updated correctly.

This became an issue for me when another package had a requirement on a later
version of hal than I was using. The problem with HAL complaining about
failure to install happened every time an update occurred (using synaptic). As
HAL is closely connected with the GNOME user interface, the solution is to
install without HAL or X running. You therefore need to go to a login prompt
(using e.g. CTRL-ALT-F1).
Login and kill off all X related stuff: I think the following should do:
$ sudo killall gdm
Then use aptitude to update your system. In my case aptitude recognised that
HAL was only partially installed and completed the installation.
Once HAL is updated you can restart the GUI using
$ sudo gdm
After that, the system appears to be ok once more.

[Bug 206634] Re: package hal 0.5.11~rc2-1ubuntu3 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2008-09-07 Thread David C
Paul,
Not sure that this is a fix, and would not recommend anyone else try this
without being aware there are pitfalls, though it does give some pointers as to
where the error might lie.

When I removed the deny lines, I then found that the screen locked solid
for one user name, and (under my user name only) I got a hal error
pop-up, though was able to edit and restore the previous
/etc/dbus-1/system.d/hal.conf.

My /etc/dbus-1/system.d/hal.conf contains the following deny lines:

!-- Default policy for the exported interfaces --
  policy context=default
deny send_interface=org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.SystemPowerManagement/
deny send_interface=org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.VideoAdapterPM/
deny send_interface=org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.LaptopPanel/
deny send_interface=org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume/
deny send_interface=org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume.Crypto/
  /policy

Perhaps you should detail which deny clauses you have on your system.

RE: [Bug 109763] Re: Insert a rewriteable or blank disc when trying to use CD/DVD Creator, with blan

2008-03-04 Thread David C

The changes I provided in the patch included here were commited into the HAL
project on 2007-12-07,
and form part of the debian package for HAL 0.5.10-5:

HAL 0.5.10-5 is part of HARDY, but the patch has NOT been backported to
Feisty or Gutsy.

The change above can be applied to any of these: there should not be any
problem with compatibility as this area of code is very stable.

[Bug 17881] Re: usb flash memory hangs after copying few MB

2007-10-31 Thread David C
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 61235 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/61235

There are a number of issues related to USB flash drives discussed in #61235.
These suggest that you have to adjust the max_sectors parameter for your drive:
the suggestion was to reduce from 240 to 128. There are other parameters
discussed there that may also help.

On my copy test for my flash drive, 128 was still giving errors and I had to
reduce max_sectors to only 32.
However, the copy time doesn't seem too bad.

I'm going to try and mark this thread as a duplicate of 61235.

[Bug 17881] Re: usb flash memory hangs after copying few MB

2007-10-28 Thread David C
I appear to be suffering the same problem on my Feisty Fawn (Linux
ubuntu 2.6.20-16-generic #2 SMP Sun Sep 23 19:50:39 UTC 2007 i686)

The problem happens if I attempt to copy a large tree from the flash drive.
I have tried this using Nautilus (and it fails after a while).
I have also been doing:
tar -C /media/disk -cf - david | tar xfB -

I have attached the output of HAL running in verbose more during the
fault (look at the section between 17:07 and 17:09)

Is this a kernel problem or a HAL problem? I see it is marked as a
kernel problem, but was wondering if HAL might be doing something.

[Bug 17881] Re: usb flash memory hangs after copying few MB

2007-10-28 Thread David C
Just been googling for other reports on this and have found a workaround that
is good for me:
Remove the USB 2.0 support provided by ehci_hcd:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# rmmod ehci_hcd

Then the copy works (but takes a long time, because USB is now 1.1).

Hope this helps others to track down the problem: I do not want to have
to use USB 1.1 if I can help it.

[Bug 66254] Re: empty CD not correctly recognized by hal

2007-10-24 Thread David C
This does not look like the problem I addressed with my patch, as it is
unllkely your CD drive is not MMC-2, and the problem would have showed
up in Feisty. Not sure the wiki is quite appropriate, but certainly
check HAL output: as well as using HALD in debug mode you can use the
HAL device manager (System-Preferences-Hardware Information): if it
sees a CD it will show as a child of the CD drive named Unknown
Device, but from your description perhaps even this is not happening.
Can GUTSY see your CD drive at all?

[Bug 109763] [Bug #109763] Insert a rewriteable or blank disc when trying to use CD/DVD Creator, with blank disc

2007-10-15 Thread David C

Cha0s: can you let us know what device you had success with?

ThomasLee82:
The problem will persist in all future versions until the HAL team decide to
support old (non-MMC2) CD-RW drives.
They did not appear interested in my patch, presumably because they do not
believe that there are (significant numbers of) users with old drives.

However, the fact that your device doesn't work is interesting, as the
patch was to allow reporting of the media size using the HAL property
volume.disc.capacity. I think that is the only effect of the change I
made. From the lshal output, I see that your device appears to be doing

[Bug 109763] RE: [Bug 66254/109763] Re: empty CD not correctly recognized by hal

2007-09-01 Thread David C

Glad to hear it works. Can you let us know what your CD drive is. There is a
list of CDs for which the fix is reported good in the last 4 messages on
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/hal/+bug/109763.

I patched 0.5.9 because, before working on the patch, I got the most
recent HAL in case others had fixed the problem. The patch works just
fine for both cases, so you might just have to use the latest sources
and re-apply to avoid the irritating update messages until a patch is
adopted by Canonical.

Perhaps you (and others subscribing to either 66254 or 109763 (the same
problem, just expressed slightly differently)) contact the HAL
developers directly with your observations (and I'm CC'ing the Debian
maintainer on this).

The problem has only recently started to appear because until around a year ago
(specifically N-C-B 2.14.3, last
date in the sources of which is 31/07/06) contained code that probed the disc
directly when HAL failed to return the MMC value.

Debian Testing uses
2.18.2, from 29/05/07, so developers/distributors have not actually had very
long to
discover that there are quite a number of folk out there with old CD
drives that used to work and that will no longer do so.

My patch to HAL was just a slight re-coding of the code from N-C-B
2.14.3, and I did that rather than simply patching N-C-B because it
seemed a cleaner place to make the mod: e.g. the 'Hardware Information'
Browser now reports the empty CD size, and that would not have worked
unless the change were made in HAL.

David

Thank you David. Your patch worked for me too. My own patches posted on
2007-07-07 and 2007-07-08 don't work. I'm still trying to make them

Unfortunately ubuntu update notifier constantly suggests to replace the

 to version 0.5.8.1 of hal.

I saw that you tried to draw the hal developers' attention to the bug
and your patch on the hal mailing list and I am astonished that neither
the hal nor the ubuntu developers seem to take notice of it.

[Bug 109763] Re: Insert a rewriteable or blank disc when trying to use CD/DVD Creator, with blank disc in CDR drive

2007-08-22 Thread David C
Great News: Can trtl and Tony state the kind of CD drive you are using,
so we can list those for which it is known to work.

My drive, as reported in the info.product field in HAL is
LG CD-RW CED-8080B

I think Canonical folks do get this thread: e.g. Ubuntu Bugs, so there
is some visability, just that I didn't see S.B. on that list.

I have sent this patch to the distribution list for HAL:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
(which you need to subscribe to first, see
http://lists.freedesktop.org/mailman/listinfo/hal

but it has elicited NO response whatsoever.

Perhaps a few more voices would help.

[Bug 109763] Re: Insert a rewriteable or blank disc when trying to use CD/DVD Creator, with blank disc in CDR drive

2007-08-20 Thread David C
Tom,
I think it likely that the patch I had attached to my previous message
(entitled Additional disc identification) provides a fix for problem with old
drives.
The issue is that newer drives have a command that returns the size of the
disc, for older drives this command is missing, but you can probe the disc
itself to get the information.
This is what my patch to hal does.
It is in a format that you can just drop it into the debian/patches directory
of HAL and then rebuild and re-install it.
I have sent it to the HAL developers but so far there have been no comments
from them.

I tested it on my LG drive using HAL 0.5.9, but I expect the patch would
work with 0.5.8 - the only reason I upgraded was in the hope that this
problem would have been resolved, and I don't think the affected file
has been touched for a couple of years.

It would be good to get your feedback on the patch as this would double
the number of devices on which it has been tested!

Re: [Bug 109763] Re: Insert a rewriteable or blank disc when tryingto use CD/DVD

2007-08-20 Thread David C
Tony,

You have to get the source package for HAL.
Do something like:
$ mkdir ~/hal; cd ~/hal; apt-get source hal
This will download a few files and a directory (in my case hal-0.5.9).
Then add my patch: (assuming you download my patch to the Desktop):
$ cp ~/Desktop/68-disc_identification.patch hal-0.5.9/debian/patches
Then from within tha hal-0.5.9 directory you run:
$ cd hal-0.5.9; debuild -i -us -uc -b
to build a binary package: the package will be called something like
hal_0.5.9-1ubuntu2~feisty1ubuntu1_i386.deb in the directory above the
hal-0.5.9 one.
I found
and then you install it using dpkg:
$ cd ~/hal/
$ dpkg -i  hal_0.5.9-1ubuntu2~feisty1ubuntu1_i386.deb

I think that is sufficient, but at the build stage you may well find you are
missing a whole load of tools that you will need to add using either apt-get
or Synaptic, things like the debian support tools package, like debuild for
example, that I think is in package debian-builder.

David,

I'd gladly give this a try, but I don't know the first thing about
building Linux from source. I've been building FreeBSD and XFree86 from
source for years, and have build the GNU toolchain more times than I
care to think about. But I don''t know where to start with Linux. The
documentation doesn't seem geared to someone who just wants to get the
source and build it (or I'm looking in all the wrong places). If you
could give me a pointer, or better yet a definitive recipe for building
HAL, I'd love to give this a go. The Sony drive I was going to swap in
turned out to be dying, so I have a day or so to kill waiting for a
replacement drive which is ultimately destined for the donor machine
anyway, so I have a real incentive to get this working.

Tony.

2007-07-24 Thread David C
Mmm, interesting, I realise others are stumbling around the same problem as I
have, though I had made my comments on https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/109763.
As the HAL specification says that volume.disc.capacity is not mandatory, I
guess HAL developers may not accept the idea of including the code. I tried
nautilus-cd-burner-2.14.3 successfully and it contains the alternative code, so
I will stick with that for the time being, but clearly there are a number of
people suffering because of this. Hope a fix can be sorted soon.

[Bug 109763] Re: Insert a rewriteable or blank disc when trying to use CD/DVD Creator, with blank disc in CDR drive

2007-07-23 Thread David C
IMHO, this is may not be a bug in HAL, but a bug in nautilus-cd-burner,
probably introduced at version 2.15.
I have successfully written CD using nautilus-cd-burner 2.14.3 on my Feisty
system.
The problem appears to be that alternative strategies used to be adopted if
volume.disc.capacity was not present, and this is no longer the case (see the
function nautilus_burn_drive_get_media_size in nautilus-burn-drive.c (2.14.3),
and compare with monitor_set_drive_media in nautilus-burn-drive-monitor.c
(2.18.2))
I think it is a nautilus problem because the volume.disc.capacity property is
optional in HAL, as can be seen from the spec
http://webcvs.freedesktop.org/hal/hal/doc/spec/hal-spec.html?view=co#device-properties-volume-disc

An alternative approach may be to add some config to HAL for the missing
drives, but this is going to be very piece-meal.

[Bug 109763] Re: Insert a rewriteable or blank disc when trying to use CD/DVD Creator, with blank disc in CDR drive

2007-07-12 Thread David C
I have same problem and can add another CD-RW to the list.
I'm sure it was ok under edgy (as I made feisty cds) but now under Feisty my LG
CD-RW CED-8080B reports similar problem:
Same message also if logged in as root:
I checked and changed the permissions on /dev/hdb with no effect (as per Nelson
Benitez 's suggestion) (and in any case I am a member of the cdrom group).
I have also tried altering the gconf nautilus-cd-burner options as per doug's
suggestion.
And using the commandline option (I ran nautilus-cd-burner
--source-iso=file.iso) didn't change anything.
So it seems to be a generic problem (HAL?)

Further info, My feisty is fully up-to-date and running kernel (as shown in
motd):
Linux ubuntu 2.6.20-16-generic #2 SMP Thu Jun 7 20:19:32 UTC 2007 i686

[Bug 81670] Re: failed to initialize HAL : gdm init script priority should be at least equal to dbus one

2007-04-06 Thread David C
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 25931 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/25931

I have feisty, recently updated from edgy.
I think I had similar problems with Edgy, but the move of S13gdm to S21gdm
cleared the problem.

Having updated, I have the same problem, and I noticed that when I restarted
dbus, avahi-daemon was removed as not running.
I also noted that I did not have dbus in /etc/rc2.d, while there is an S13gdm
(now moved to S21gdm as advised above).
So I have added S12dbus in /etc/rc2.d/ and this removes the problem.
