[Bug 1591167] Re: Bluetooth: hci0 link tx timeout with Intel Corporation Wireless 7260
I applied the patched /lib/firmware/intel/ibt- hw-37.7.10-fw-1.80.2.3.d.bseq as mentioned by @7oby in comment #4 on Ubuntu 16.04.3. No Joy. My control, is a newer: [9.468054] iwlwifi :02:00.0: Detected Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless AC 7265, REV=0x210 but the patched firmware seems to work just fine. (I have rolled back to the original, however.) Hardware is Intel NUC NUC5i5RYH. Bluetooth has been working fine with my primary bluetooth speaker since I first installed 16.04 shortly after it was released. As of sometime in the last two weeks it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. The problem appears after I have to reboot. A few days ago, it wasn't working and I just gave up and used a cable. But then at some point after another reboot it started working again. Today it stopped again (no updates during this whole time). [Bug 1710941] Re: Bluetooth stopped working after update
Thanks Daniel. Rolling back to kernel 4.4.0-87-generic #110-Ubuntu SMP seemed to fix the problem. Upgrading to 4.4.0-91 also seemed to cause other problems: My system started overheating, eventually slowed to a crawl (i.e., over a matter of minutes after each reboot slowed to the point of being unresponsive), and I saw 4 instances (one for each core, I presume) of kidle_interrupt, which I had never seen before. I notice that 4.4.0-91 is no longer showing up as an update in the repos for 16.04. For what it's worth, I also downgraded libgd3 to version 2.1.1-4build2, as it also upgraded around the same time as my recent kernel updates (-87 and -89, but I don't think I ever rebooted into -89). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1710941 Title: Bluetooth stopped working after update To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bluez/+bug/1710941/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1710941] [NEW] Bluetooth stopped working after update
Public bug reported: Bluetooth connection to Bose Soundlink II have been fine for years. Applied a few new updates in the last day or two --- system was generally up to date, I don't often wait more than a week or so --- and now I can no longer connect. Removed the device and re-paired just fine, although the speaker did not connect as it usually does after the pairing (i.e., it stayed in pairing mode). [Bug 1582213] Re: [xenial] Bluetooth device doesn't play any sound in A2DP mode unless set to HSP/HFP first
@Daniel van Vugt (vanvugt): Thanks for your assistance! I am not Mary Sherman, and I'm continuing to experience this problem, even with the PPA and after rebooting. I didn't subscribe to this bug, I didn't even know about it. I report bug 1691556 and you marked it a duplicate of this one. As I have already requested, kindly re-open my bug 1691556, as I don't believe I can re-open it myself. Finally, I'd like to see this fixed in 16.04. It's LTS, and that's important to me (and a lot of users). If that means I have to help with backport, I'm happy to do so. In addition, if I can be helpful with debugging, I'd be happy to do so, and have tried. It's just not clear to me at this point how to get better / more detailed debugging info. What I did try per https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingBluetooth didn't reveal anything helpful. For me, I believe the key issue is figuring out the "Device or resource busy" error (as I've mentioned here and in my original bug report). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1582213 Title: [xenial] Bluetooth device doesn't play any sound in A2DP mode unless set to HSP/HFP first To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bluez/+bug/1582213/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1582213] Re: [xenial] Bluetooth device doesn't play any sound in A2DP mode unless set to HSP/HFP first
The problem appears to be with setting up the input sink, which I couldn't care less about. If any knows of a way for bluez / pulseaudio to force a device to just connect as an output-only device (e.g., normal bluetooth speaker), I think I'd be fine, as I have no problems with numerous other bluetooth speakers. If not, I think for me the key is to figure out why the input sink cannot be established due to the "device or resource busy" message. If I could figure out how to a detailed debug / strace of bluetoothd when it tries to establish the input sink, that'd be most helpful. I've tried before w/o finding anything helpful. For me, I think the issue is not with pulseaudio but truly with bluez. Given this, I'd like to request that my bug 1691556 be re-opened and unmarked as a duplicate. From my perspective, no evidence or explanation has been given for why my report was marked as a duplicate as this one. The errors I've been continually reporting are different than those reported by others, and the fixes that seem to work for others do not work for me. [Bug 1691556] Re: Can't send audio to Amazon Echo via Bluetooth
Additionally, this issue also appeared along the line with Ubuntu+KDE and apparently was easily resolved, as described in ubuntuforums.org, [link](https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2318966). Quoting another ubuntuforums.org post (also KDE), [link](https://askubuntu.com/questions/763539/bluetooth-speaker-no- sound-in-ubuntu-16-04), "So far, it seems that things only go wrong when I try to connect in A2DP mode. Until there is a real fix/workaround, I am going to try to remember to always switch to HSP/HSF mode before powering off or disconnecting the speaker.". So, perhaps in the short-term for Ubuntu+Unity a similar workaround could be found, if this is indeed the correct diagnosis, and in the longer-term figure out why connecting in A2DP mode fails (for both KDE and Unity). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1691556 Title: Can't send audio to Amazon Echo via Bluetooth To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bluez/+bug/1691556/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I suppose I could report it to Debain, but I've only ever used Debain vis a vis Ubuntu, so I thought it best to start here. Thanks. [Bug 1691556] [NEW] Can't send audio to Amazon Echo via Bluetooth
Public bug reported: Pairing and coupling to Amazon Echo works, but no sound is heard. I believe the issue is related to the fact that Amazon Echo is paired as a handset (i.e., speaker + microphone) rather than just as a speaker. I believe the critical error is found in a dmesg line such as: Feb 28 10:59:05 n1 bluetoothd[1025]: a2dp-source profile connect failed for 50:F5:DA:A6:3F:EA: Device or resource busy as I describe in the askubuntu.com discussion at: https://askubuntu.com/questions/871630/cant-send-audio-to-amazon-echo- via-bluetooth I have clarified there my thinking and the steps I've taken thus far on this issue, which includes trying debug bluetooth per the Ubuntu wiki page which describes how to do so. This is probably an upstream issue, as Mike H-R has commented there that the problem also occurs on ArchLinux. I and a few others would like to get this resolved, and I am happy to help (I'm a software developer). However, at this point, I'm not sure how to proceed without some assistance. [Bug 1668704] [NEW] Cannot type any input into web pages with epiphany browser after upgrade
Public bug reported: I upgraded today from Ubunutu 15.10 to 16.04.2 LTS. Since the upgrade, I can no longer type any entry into any sort of input text box or area on any web page. I only use the epiphany web browser with google.com/voice, google.com/calendar, and i.doit.im. This problem occurs with all three. I also tried the search box at harvard.edu (just to see if the problem might be site specific). When I type, a few letters sometime do appear. I'd say about 1-5% of what I'm typing gets through. I'm not having any problems like this whatsoever with any other web browser or any sort of application. [Bug 1132063] Re: Mouse settings missing from Mouse & Touchpad dialog
Same problem on brand new 15.10 installed yesterday. From searching Google, I see that plugging in a wired mouse brings the settings back, and the pointer speed settings affects both mice. Hi Christopher, Yes, apparently it does. Kindly see the attached screenshot, which again shows 12gb using 'lshw' but 'free' and 'cat /proc/meminfo' show only 8gb. [Bug 1321938] Re: [Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3 (rev. 3.0)] Ubuntu 12.04 LTS lshw sees 12gb RAM but system only using 8gb
Hi Christopher, I'm a bit confused. Don't you mean a reporting discrepancy between 'lshw' vs. '/proc' and procps tools like 'free'. BOTH 'free' and 'cat /proc/meminfo' show the WRONG info, whereas 'lshw' shows the correct info. Just to be clear, I'm rather confident that this is not a reporting issue, but an actually failure of the kernel to detect and use all 12GB at boot. Line 182 of 'dmesg' reads: [0.00] Memory: 8137408k/9699328k available (6591k kernel code, 1334588k absent, 227332k reserved, 6614k data, 924k init) I've attached the first 250 lines of 'dmesg' to this post, for context, should you need it. So, given this, I presume you nevertheless would like me to try the upstream kernel, correct? [Bug 1321938] Re: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS lshw sees 12gb RAM but system only using 8gb
Oops, I should have also mentioned: Of course, all 12gb were being recognized before the motherboard (MB) replacement. No kernel updates or any other kind of updates were applied during the 2-3 day period between when I installed the new MB and noticed the lacking 4gb of RAM. I did force a kernel reinstall (i.e., dpkg --reinstall install ...) but that did not correct the problem. At least two kernel updates have been applied since reinstalling the MB (which occurred about 4-5 weeks ago). No updates seems to have corrected the problem, either. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1321938 Title: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS lshw sees 12gb RAM but system only using 8gb To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1321938/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1157643] Re: procps fail to start
I wonder what's going on these days with Ubuntu. Almost every update to 12.04 LTS seems to break something and cost me up to an hour each time. And yet again here... :( More importantly: Danny Lawson's fix DID NOT work for me (post #5 here), that is, removing the 10-kernel-hardening.config. Sigh. And, unfortunately, I can seem to get start procps to provide ANY sort of helpful debugging info. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1157643 Title: procps fail to start To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/procps/+bug/1157643/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

OK, I'm getting this: error: Invalid argument setting key fs.inotify.max_user_watches in /var/log/upstart/procps.log So, now I just need to figure out where this max_user_watches is being set. It doesn't appear to be in any of the /etc/sysctl.d/* files.
[Bug 1157643] Re: procps fail to start
OK, I spoke to soon. Aparantly I grep'd for: user_max instead of max_user, which DOES match: /etc/sysctl.d/30-spideroak.conf I commented out the one line in this file (i.e. add a leading hash mark '#'), and now procps starts. So, IF YOU USE SPIDEROAK, THIS MIGHT BE THE PROBLEM. [Bug 908526] Re: Shutter indicator somtimes only visible in Expo view
I think it's important to clarify a few issues with this bug: First, for some of us -- including myself and the original submitter -- the Shutter indicate DOES work and appear in Unity's indicators once Shutter starts. Rather, it's just that, at some point for reasons I've not been able to nail down, the Shutter indicator inexplicable disappears in (all) workspace views, but oddly re-appears in Expo view (compiz) and then re-disappears once a particular workspace has been selected. Obviously, seeing the indicator in Expo view is nice and a way of easily knowing that Shutter is still running, but functionally does nothing (i.e,. clicking on it in Expo view does NOT unhide Shutter). Thus, and secondly, IMHO the really problem here is that, when the indicator disappears in the workspace views, there's NO WAY to access Shutter, because once it's hidden, the ONLY way to bring the Shutter window back is to click on it's indicator. So, since you can't see the indicator, you can't click on it to restore Shutter. Thus, the only solution is to killall shutter in a terminal or with Alt-F2 and then re-start Shutter. It's a major annoyance to those of us who regularly make screenshots to help educate users. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/908526 Title: Shutter indicator somtimes only visible in Expo view To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/shutter/+bug/908526/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 908526] Re: Shutter indicator somtimes only visible in Expo view
OK, according to http://askubuntu.com/questions/39843/application- indicator-for-shutter, this issue is fixed in Shutter 0.89, which presently is available from a PPA and can be installed / updated thusly: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:shutter/ppa sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install shutter I have upgrade this v0.89 and I'll report back if it DOES NOT fix the problem. [Bug 996336] [NEW] XBMC playback problems (mp4, mkv) after upgrade to Precise (12.04)
Public bug reported: Expected behavior: XBMC plays all supported video files correctly. Actual behavior: After upgrading to Precise (12.04) from Oneiric (11.10), XBMC stopped playing .mkv and .mp4 files correctly (and possibly others). .avi files seem to playback fine. Specifically, .mkv and .mp4 files start to playback, as I hear the audio just fine, but the video playback is not shown (i.e., completely black screen). Then, if I attempt to stop the playback, XBMC freezes, and the only way to correctly the problem is to switch to tty1 (i.e., press Ctrl-Alt-F1), login, and run 'pkill -9 -f xbmc.bin'. Additional information: Based on the information found at this URL: http://www.noobslab.com/2011/09/install-xbmc-on- ubuntu-1110-oneiric.html I ran: sudo apt-add-repository ppa:nathan-renniewaldock/xbmc-stable sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get purge xbmc xbmc-bin sudo apt-get install xbmc in order to try an alternate build of XBMC Eden (11.0). Doing so fixed all of the playback problems. Thus, I assume that the source of the problem concerns the Ubuntu build for Precise (12.04) rather than XBMC itself per se. In order to check if perhaps the problem with the Ubuntu build was due to an upgrade issue, I ran the following: sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/nathan-renniewaldock-xbmc-stable-precise.list sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get purge xbmc xbmc-bin sudo apt-get install xbmc in order to again completely purge XBMC from the system and install the official Ubuntu version. Unfortunately, doing so caused the described problems to occur again. Thus, I have switched back to the alternate build (i.e., from ppa:nathan-renniewaldock/xbmc-stable) and will keep this repo active until such time as this issue is resolved. Thanks! [Bug 872207] Re: When Firefox is running in Unity, drop-down menus sometime close when opened
@Sam: Any word on this re: firefox/thunderbird menus not appearing of disappearing after workspace switching? It's been 4 months since the first report on this issue without any resolution or workaround, and it's a constant irritation. I appreciate that most of the work here is voluntary contributed time -- and I'm happy to debug / code / contribute as well (as I'm very motivated to see this fixed) -- but communication is obviously essential for community-driven software and there's been very little feedback re: who's taken ownership of this issue, what they've tried and discovered, what should be tried next, and so forth. I'd love to help, but don't want to duplicate effort, and a little guidance on where to start would be most helpful. I'd hate to see this issue persist into 12.04, especially since it will be a LTS release. Public bug reported: Today, Feb. 17, 2012, running apt-get upgrade caused my version of Thunderbird to upgrade to version 10.0.2+build1-0ubuntu0.11.10.1. Everything seems to be working fine, with one notable exception: Visiting Google Plus within Thunderbird now no longer works, whereas it had been working fine for well over a year now. Specifically, all the tabs I bring up in Thunderbird continue to work fine, and the Google Plus tab appears to start to load the site, but the tab is always blank (see attached screenshot, last image in the montage). Running Thunderbird in safe mode (i.e., thunderbird -safe-mode) at the command line does not correct the problem: Again, all my tabs are restored, but the Google Plus tab is always blank. I use Thunderbird as an integrated communication tool, having email, calendar, Google Voice, Google Reader, Facebook, and Google+ tabs open at all times. [Bug 872207] Re: When Firefox is running in Unity, drop-down menus sometime close when opened
@Sean: Thanks for the tip re: upgrading Compiz from oneiric-proposed (c.f., Bug #896762). I've done so (i.e., upgraded Compiz) and, although so far the problem seems to occur less often, for me at least it FAR from fixes it. Of course, my version of the problem occurs more (perhaps exclusively) when I go into Expo view (either by mouse button or keyboard shortcut) and occurs less -- or perhaps not at all, I'm not sure -- when I use Ctrl- Alt-Arrow to change workspace. [This is in contrast to other folks who seem to have the problem under the opposite conditions (i.e., menus disappear more when switching with Ctrl-Alt-Arrrow, but not so much or at all when switching viz a viz Expo view).] Bug #896762 is specifically in reference to switching with Ctrl-Alt-Arrow, so I guess, given the form in which I'm experiencing the problem, it's perhaps not surprising this upgrade did not fully work for me so. So, at least for one user (me), the problem remains UNRESOLVED. [Bug 872207] Re: When Firefox is running in Unity, drop-down menus sometime close when opened
On 2011-12-05 (Comment #37) Tim Penhey (thumper) wrote: I believe that Sam may have fixed this bug already. Any further word on this? It's been over a month since Tim wrote this, and I still have to deal with this issue constantly re: menus either never appearing or disappearing immediately upon the slightest mouse movement. In direct contrast to zzarko (Comments #42 and #43), I do _not_ seem to have the problem when using CTRL-ALT-Arrow to switch workspaces, but rather when I enter Expo VIew to switch workspaces. I understand the holidays slow things down and all, and I appreciate that most of the work is voluntary, but it'd be nice to have some information re: is the problem really fixed and, if so, what's at the root of it, when we can expect an update to correct it, and will the fix appear in ubuntu-backports or will we need to upgrade to Precise. [Bug 908526] Re: Shutter indicator somtimes only visible in Expo view
Thanks Mario. I whitelisted all indicators shortly after upgrading to Oneiric. Shutter does show up in normal view, just not expo view. But I imagine expo view only shows indicators using app-indicators; if so, then the observed behavior makes sense. [Bug 821832] Re: indicator-weather disappears from panel randomly
Thanks John. As I mentioned before, the problems seem to be something amiss in libdbusmenu -- either the problem is there, or libdbusmenu is not checking for a problem condition for which it should be checking. It's quite likely that just a few lines of programming code need to be changed -- it's identifying the exact lines and how they need to be changed that's the kicker. :) For what it's worth, if you edit the file /home/jack/.config/autostart /indicator-weather.desktop and change this line: Exec=indicator-weather to this (include the double quotes): Exec=bash -c while true; do indicator-weather; done and then logoff and back on, then at least the weather indicator should restart itself immediately after each crash. I have done so for the time being and this workaround seems to work fine. For what it's worth, this is called putting a shell wrapper around the program (albeit a very simple one). Just in case you're not sure how to edit the file, just run the following from either a terminal session or by first pressing Alt-F2 to run a command: gedit /home/jack/.config/autostart/indicator-weather.desktop Last, for completeness, I've attached a copy of my indicator- weather.desktop file modified in this way, for your reference, or you could just download it and copy it to the /home/jack/.config/autostart directory (overwriting the one you presently have). Again, the change in this file won't take effect until you log off and back on. [Bug 876929] Re: Evince crashes (segfault) under Unity with a custom theme
Hi Jamie, Thanks for the help, although I'm not sure the actions you propose will fix the problem. /local/stores/morse is just a place I store large files on a separate partition and has nothing to do with evince. I relocate /usr/local to /srv/system/usr/local, a separate parition, and create a symlink so as to preserve /usr/local contents across fresh installs (which I typically perform instead of dist upgrades). The only way I think /usr/local - /srv/system/usr/local could be involved is that /usr/local/share/mime/mime.cache appears to be used by evince. Why mime.cache is kept on /usr/local by debian / ubuntu is a mystery to me; it's the one file that has prevented me from unmount /usr/local in the past on previous installs -- by convention and perhaps by POSIX standards, the OS should not by definition and by default not have any dependencies on /usr/local, but that's another matter and not that big a deal. :) At any rate, I'm using evince fine since moving my trivial theme customizations from $HOME/.themes to /usr/share/themes ($HOME=/home/morse, on a separate /home partition; $HOME != /local/morse) and I appreciate the all the help. So, the main issue is resolved -- that I wasn't able to use evince at the time. However, I do believe that the theme customization issue remains unresolved (i.e., I shouldn't have to / it's bad form to change files in /usr/share), but that's another bug for another time. :) Thanks again and best wishes, Doug -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/876929 Title: Evince crashes (segfault) under Unity with a custom theme To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evince/+bug/876929/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 728423] Re: Graphical corruption in unity after leaving shift switcher
Apologies, that should have been 1-2 second video. Also, for what it's worth: Back on 11.04 I tried out Nautilus Elementary with Clutterflow (am- monkeyd ppa). It never worked right, displaying similar artifacts in the ClutterFlow region -- so much so that it was unusable. I long since removed it and the am-monkeyd ppa. Same machine and hardware configuration. Within the ATI Catalyst Control Panel (amdccle), I have tried both tear- free enabled and disabled, as well as just vsync on blank both enabled and disabled (tear-free forces vsync on blank, so tear-free is some superset of that). None of the settings resolve the problem with shift switcher (nor did it with ClutterFlow). Lastly, if you look at the screenshot I posted in Comment #7, the corruption on the topmost right-hand side of the panel (but not menu bar), you'll see the remnants of Alarm Clock 0.3.2 applet/indicator. This window pops up when I first login. I close it right away, and had not used it since logging in (hours previous). Thus, my suspicion is that the artifacts are related to some double (or triple) buffering issue within or between OpenGL and ATI's fglrx drivers, or at least in the way Shift Switcher is calling them. I suspect the was true with Clutterflow back on 11.04. This issue is annoying, but what's worse is that it makes it more difficult for me to market to friends and colleagues. :) Looks terrible. I always used Nvidia on Linux up until summer of 2010. I think I'm down with ATI and will go back to Nvidia. I am curious: Is anyone else here having these problems on non-ATI video hardware? [Bug 821832] Re: indicator-weather disappears from panel randomly
So, my confidence is now pretty high that this is due to a problem in libdbusmenu, or some misuse of it by either Python itself or a Python extension (but I tend to doubt it's the latter two). So, not sure I can go much further with this right now. The next step I would take would be download the lib*-dbg versions of the relevant libraries and perhaps a dbg version of Python 4.7, and build a debug version of indicator-weather from source code, and then run the debug version of the indicator. Unfortunately, that's beyond what I have time for in the foreseeable future. Moreover, I imagine (and hope) there are developers much more familiar with the indicator API and libdbusmenu than I who are already better setup to do so. Thus, for now, I think I'm in wait on the developers mode on this, unless someone can point out flaws in my reasoning or suggesting something I can try in a reasonable amount of time. I will continue to submit all indicator-related crash reports, however. I suspect the core developers need this. Finally, @John: Thanks again for you help and your posts! One thing I would caution you against in the future, though: Although it has been very helpful to me, it's generally a bad idea to post crash reports publicly. To exchange them via email is one thing, but to have them where anyone can download them is potentially a huge risk. The crash report, and the core dump in particular, might contain very sensitive information, even cached, unencrypted passwords in RAM when the crash occurs (less likely these days, though, many developers know better than to do this). So, while likely little harm done, I thought I'd mention it, just FYI. By default, with apport enabled, crash reports sent to Launchpad are private and can only viewed by you and the developers with access to it (who you can see listed there). Thus, it's pretty safe to send in crash reports, just not a great idea to post them publicly. Happy Holidays! [Bug 821832] Re: indicator-weather disappears from panel randomly
@John: Sounds good, and Merry Christmas to you as well! I didn't really read through all the previous posts in this thread until just now, so wasn't aware Eliah had already cautioned you re: crash reports. I certainly will be more mindful of this issue in the future, both in offering out my crash reports and in asking for them (e.g., asking someone to email me directly rather post somewhere). Thanks for keeping your netbook up, that might be diagnostic. For what it's worth, regarding Comment #27, the problem is that for some reason the Package: line was missing from your crash report (not sure why). All I did was add a line Package: indicator-weather after the ExecutablePath: /usr/bin/indicator-weather in your _usr_bin_indicator- weather.1000.crash file to correct the problem. My crash report did include the package line, as Package: indicator-weather 11.05.31-0ubuntu2.1. Lastly, I'd encouraging hanging in there with Ubuntu. I think they're on the right path, but I'm sure both Canonical and volunteer developers are inundated with trouble tickets. They're building a whole new user interface, a lot from the ground up, and it's natural for that to break a lot things. I discussed this a bit at this link, if you're interested: http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=11553934postcount=11 Alrightly, am soon off on a long drive to visit 70-year-old mother. [Bug 821832] Re: indicator-weather disappears from panel randomly
Hi John, Wow, lots of bug reports there, most of them segfaults from the looks of it. Your crash report could be helpful. Would you mind to post it as a a file attachment? I can't really work with as it is. The email message itself is, as it should be, has long lines wrapped, thereby destroying the base64 encoding of the core dump that's a part of the message. And I can't seem to copy and paste it into a file, using either cat or vim or gedit (In principle I should be able to, copy paste is choking on it). More generally, it's a good idea to only use comments, well... for comments. :) Files should be added as attachments. Makes it much easier for everyone to work with, and attachments do not by default get sent out as a part of the email notifications. Thanks, Doug -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/821832 Title: indicator-weather disappears from panel randomly To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/weather-indicator/+bug/821832/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 821832] Re: indicator-weather disappears from panel randomly
Thanks John. Well, for your crash, it looks like your crash is related to passing a menu message along dbus (see below). This isn't terribly diagnostic, but my best guess would be that the problem is occurring when indicator- weather is updating it appearance due to some change in weather conditions. Whether it's just changing the icon, or changing the displayed temperature (if that option is enabled), both, or perhaps some other appearance change, is not clear. It's hard to know if the problem is in the Python code, some Python extension, libdbusmenu itself, or possibly libgobject (I tend to doubt the latter, tho'). Ideally, libdbusmenu should catch a bad message or invalid reference and return an error rather than letting a segfault occur. I imagine libdbusmenu is newer-ish, so it might not be as thoroughly tested as it eventually will be. Ha! As I was writing this, I noticed the indicator weather icon update. First, both the icon and the temp briefly disappeared, and then just the icon came back with definitely a different icon than had just been there. The new icon was shifted right, however, because ONLY the new icon appeared, not the temperature (so I don't know if the temperature changed or stayed the same -- although restarting the indicator shows the same temperature). At any rate, the icon then disappeared and a crash report was generated, which can be found under Bug #908513. It was a SIGABRT rather than a SIGSEGV, but I these two crash might be related nonetheless (I'll do further forensics on my own crash momentarily). I should note also that now, after restarting indicator-weather, my weather indicator is now the (relatively meaningless) orange / white indicator (see attached screenshot, although now at 1:19am CST the indicator looks normal again). [Yeah, the screen capture app Shutter isn't showing up in the indicator area either -- I had to use PrintScreen button. Shutter's disappeared a good bit before, too. So, this may all just be related to more generalized problems with the relatively new indicator API in Unity. Just speculation on my part, however.] Back to John's crash: Here's the output from the stack backtrace that lead to my comments above: root@s3:~# apport-retrace -g _usr_bin_indicator-weather.1000.crash GNU gdb (Ubuntu/Linaro 7.3-0ubuntu2) 7.3-2011.08 Copyright (C) 2011 Free Software Foundation, Inc. [Bug 821832] Re: indicator-weather disappears from panel randomly
Hi, I recently started using indicator-weather and also would like to see this bug resolved and am willing to help in any way I can. My $HOME/.cache/indicator-weather.log file is attached. Apparently, according to the log, I used indicator-weather a bit on Sept. 14, 2011 (i.e., on Natty). I started using it again on Dec. 21, 2011, and it disappears regularly. (I upgraded to Oneiric the day of the official stable release, Oct. 13 I believe.) There are a few error messages in the log, but nothing too telling. IMPORTANT: Please disregard any messages of the following form: [MainThread] 2011-12-21 03:54:56,892 - ERROR - SingleInstance: exception while renaming '/tmp/tmp4Q1R_L' to '/tmp/indicator-weather-1000.pid': [Errno 22] invalid mode ('wb') or filename: '/tmp/indicator-weather-1000.pid' On Dec. 21, 2011, I ran as root mount -o remount /tmp. Bad idea. :) Caused lots of troubles across the board. So, these messages on that day are completely irrelevant to the issue at hand. Hope this helps, though I doubt it helps much. I suspect someone's going to have to run indicator-applet under a debugger or with strace or the like. Is it C, C++, or Python? Ruby? I'd be happy to debug if it's any of those. [Bug 905801] [NEW] Update login records when command is launched option does not appear to be working in Terminator (Ubuntu 11.10)
Public bug reported: The Update login records when command is launched option does not appear to be working on Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric; fully-updated as of 2011-12-16) when using the Terminator application. I also encountered one case in which the page simply renders the page as raw HTML instead of actually rending the page/frames correctly. This behavior is new, and I believe coincides with having upgraded to FF8 (official Ubuntu/Canonical version). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/897794 Title: Firefox 8 User Agent String Ubuntu; addition causes attempt to download rather than display To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+bug/897794/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 897794] Re: Firefox 8 User Agent String Ubuntu; addition causes attempt to download rather than display
I can confirm that, as a workaround, if you install the User Agent Switcher: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/user-agent-switcher/ and simply create a new user agent -- I called mine Firefox 8.0 -- and edit out the Ubuntu; (notice that the space after the semicolon is removed), that this temporarily fixes the vnd.wap.xhtml+xml problem, at least for the 4-5 sites I checked. Note that the User Agent Switcher, when you create a new entry, prompts you with the default user agent string of your version of Firefox. Thus, this is really easy to do -- you do not have to create an entirely new user agent string, simply edit the default as I described. Just for clarity, you (obviously) must switch your user agent to your new agent using Tools - Default User Agent. Once you change it, the menu also changes (which I think is confusing at first), so in my case the Tools menu changes to Tools - Firefox 8.0. This did not fix the problem I'm having with one website rendering raw HTML -- the web interface for a D-Link DGS-1210-24 managed switch -- and I have tried using several other user agent strings (i.e., IE6, IE7, etc.) to no avail. So, I suspect this particular problem of mine is related to other changes within FF8 not having to do with the user agent string. I have attached a screenshot of the relevant settings in my User Agent Switcher. ** Attachment added: screenshot.png https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+bug/897794/+attachment/2620895/+files/screenshot.png -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/897794 Title: Firefox 8 User Agent String Ubuntu; addition causes attempt to download rather than display To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+bug/897794/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 872207] Re: When Firefox is running in Unity, drop-down menus sometime close when opened
@Thane: This is potentially very helpful information, thanks! I'm not entirely certain, but I think that selecting System - Preferences - Appearance - Visual Effects - None disables Compiz entirely, which, if so, would confirm that Compiz is implicated (which we already suspected). However, if changing this setting does NOT disable Compiz entirely, but only certain parst of it, then is could be quite helpful diagnostic information indeed, especially if changing the setting only effects a few aspects of Compiz. So, does anyone know exactly what changing this setting does? @Andres and Sean: Most excellent, thanks. :) So, the disappearing menu issue is then not likely due to upgrade issues. @Andres: I agree, I think that Compiz is definitely implicated. That this problem only occurs with Mozilla apps -- as far as anyone has reported -- seems to narrow it down to at least a Compiz-Mozilla interaction. I'm beginning to wonder, since the compositing manager seems clearly implicated, if the problem might be related to (a) themes (doubt it, tho') or perhaps (b) transparent menus (which I have enabled with Ubuntu Tweak). I've disabled the latter and will report back if perhaps that corrects the problem. [Bug 872207] Re: When Firefox is running in Unity, drop-down menus sometime close when opened
Hi, [This comment is a bit long. For those in a hurry, perhaps just read the important part set off below. :) ] As with Dave Russell (comment #15), menus disappear for me constantly as well, both in Firefox and in Thunderbird. I'd say 20+ times an hour rather than 20+ per day. Globalmenus work OK, but right-click and dropdown menus disappear all the time, by either flashing incredibly briefly and then disappearing or sometimes appearing but then disappear as soon as I move the mouse (oddly, using up/down arrow keys does work correctly in this latter case). As with Domingos86 (comment #4), pressing Alt-Tab does seem to correct the problem. Unfortunately, unlike Dave (comment #15), unmaximizing then re-maximizing the effected window does _not_ work for me. - BEGIN IMPORTANT PART - POSSIBLY IMPORTANT: Unlike Domingos86 (comment #15), best I can tell, I seem to _only_ have the problem when using either the workspace switcher (I use this rarely) or pressing my middle mouse button, which I have mapped to invoke the same Expo view (within the Compiz Expo plugin; I use this constantly). On the other hand, when using the 4 Ctrl+Alt+arrow key combinations, I have yet to observe the menus / dropdowns disappearing (I will certainly pay close attention to this and report back if I observe otherwise). THUS, it might be that the initiation of the problem is localized to activating the Expo view (by whatever means) and then switching to a workspace with a Firefox / Thunderbird window. SO, I'm quite curious: Does anyone else besides Domingos86 encounter the problem _without_ going into Expo view shortly beforehand? - END IMPORTANT PART - I personally keep only one maximized window, Firefox, on workspace 2 and only one maximized window, Thunderbird, on workspace 4. I say this to say: I wonder if another limiting factor might be that the Firefox / Thunderbird window has to be maximized and the topmost (i.e., top of the window z-order) for the problem to occur. Has anyone encountered this problem with Firefox / Thunderbird _not_ being maximized? [Bug 872207] Re: When Firefox is running in Unity, drop-down menus sometime close when opened
Thanks Dave for your feedback -- I think the information is quite helpful. So, just to be clear: You DO have this problem when switching workspaces with Ctrl-Alt-arrow (and hence never zooming out to Expo view)? IOW, my present working hypothesis is that going into Expo view is essential to triggering the problem, but it sounds like you have evidence contrary to this supposition. Have I understood correctly? [Bug 872207] Re: When Firefox is running in Unity, drop-down menus sometime close when opened
@Thane: Thanks so much. This pretty much disconfirms my working hypothesis, at least for Thunderbird -- that going into Expo view is necessary to trigger the problem -- but disconfirmation is useful information nonetheless. This seems to be a nasty bug in that I suspect it's going to be a hard one for the developers to nail down. It's specific to Mozilla software, and seems to be a bad Mozilla / Unity 3D / Compiz interaction, possibly also specific to certain video drivers (as not everyone has this problem -- 68 affected users is a lot, but I suspect small compared to the active Ubuntu user base who would take the time to report it). So, the more we can do to narrow down the boundary conditions -- or define some usage case that _always_ causes the problem for all users affected -- the more we can help the developers isolate the problem (obviously). Unfortunately, I'm not sure what to suggest next, although one question does come to mind: Is anyone having this problem with a _fresh_ install of Oneiric (11.10)? [Bug 894048] [NEW] Keyboard accelerators not working correctly in Firefox and Thunderbird after upgrade from 11.04 (Natty) to 11.10 (Oneiric)
Public bug reported: Hi, After upgrading from Natty (11.04) to Oneiric (11.10), the keyboard accelerators for firefox-globalmenu and thunderbird-globalmenu have stopped working correctly. Behavior: When pressing a keyboard accelerator, for example, Alt-F for the File menu, for the first time after a window is created, it is not possible to then continue pressing accelerator keys in the submenu. This makes using makes using combinations of keys to access menu items impossible -- the only work around is to then use the mouse or press the down arrow once for the purpose of highlighting the first item in the choosen submenu, at which point that (and only that) submenu's accelerators become available. However, the problem also applies to subsubmenus, subsubsubmenus, etc. Oddly, once a submenu has been used one, then the keyboard accelerators do work for it for as long as that window exists (at least as far as I can tell; I haven't checked globalmenu's memory for this for subsubmenus, etc.). This behavior is particular problematic when one is constantly creating new windows. For example, every time I compose a new message in Thunderbird, it creates a new window for that purpose. Because I prefer to send messages in both HTML and plain text, I need to, at some point during message composition, access the menu item Options - Format - Plain and Rich (HTML) text. The sequence of keyboard accelerators for this is Alt-P, F, L (for each menu component, respectively). This keyboard accelerator sequence has always worked for me up until Oneiric (11.10). Now it no longer does, and it's quite frustrating, as I use all sorts of keyboard accelerator sequences in both Thunderbird and Firefox. This Thunderbird message composition highlights the problem particularly well, because every time I compose a message, a new window is created, and thus the accelerators don't work each time. Even with more persistent windows, such as the main Thunderbird or Firefox windows I keep open, I can't keep up with whether I've already accessed a particular submenu or not, so I basically give up on using accelerators in either one of these applications, which are two of the four applications I use most. This problem does not appear for other applications, at least as far as I can tell. I have tested both gvim and TexMakerX and keyboard accelerator sequences seem to work fine consistently for both of them. Expected behavior: Sequences of keyboard accelerators should always work in both Thunderbird and Firefox with globalmenu enabled (the default). [Bug 884005] [NEW] After upgrading to Oneiric, Unity leaves focus on previous viewport when switching viewports via the Compiz Expo plugin
Public bug reported: Hi, The problem: I have Expo view mapped to my middle mouse button. Ever since upgrading from Natty to Oneric, whenever I switch viewports by pressing the middle button to invoke Expo view, clicking on a different viewport, and then pressing the middle button again to exit Expo view, the mouse focus is remains on the most recently focused window in the previous viewport. Consequences of the problem: This is terribly frustrating in that, because I use the keyboard heavily and much more than the mouse, I'm constantly switching viewports (with the mouse) and then start typing again, only to have my keyboard input going to not only the wrong application, but the wrong viewport, where I cannot even see it. As you can imagine, I have occasionally had some pretty undesirable results due to my keyboard input being directed to the wrong window (e.g., intending to copy and paste between windows residing in different viewports and having my keystrokes, after switching viewports, replacing the source of the copy operation because the mouse focus was on the wrong window/viewport). Expected behavior: When switching viewports, no matter the method, the window at the top of the Z-order for that viewport should get the mouse focus, just as it did in Natty, 10.x, and 9.x. [Bug 875557] Re: Compiz grid overlay appears after workspace switcher use
Since my report, Bug #877951, has been marked a duplicate of this bug, I just thought I should mention the following: 1. The procedure for creating the problem as reported by the OP in this report (Bug #875557) does NOT cause the problem for me. In other words, clicking on the viewport switcher in the launcher and then moving the mouse to the left does not cause the unwanted orange box to appear. Indeed, on repeated trials, even trying other edges when in expo view of the viewports does not induce the orange box. However, I have set the middle mouse button in Compiz settings to bring up expo view, and when I access the expo view in this fashion, moving the mouse to the left or right edge in expo view OCCASIONALLY induces the orange box. 2. Relatedly, the unwanted orange box most often appears for me when NOT in expo view; simply moving the mouse to the right or left edge of the screen can induce the problem. I have not yet been able to determine under what conditions this happens and why it does not occur at other times. The problem does seem to be a state issue, in that, once it occurs, it keeps occurring until some sequence of events brings it out of the unwanted state of behavior. I most often go into expo view and click a different viewport and then back again to the viewport within which I was working in order to get rid of the orange box. Sometimes this fix takes right away, other times I might have to go into expo view to fix it repeatedly to get the unwanted behavior to stop (for a time; the unwanted behavior invariably returns, typically within 10-20 minutes). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/875557 Title: Compiz grid overlay appears after workspace switcher use To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/compiz-plugins-main/+bug/875557/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 874320] Re: Wake on Lan (WOL) not working after upgrade from natty to oneiric
Hi, OK, I feel stupid... In trying again to get WOL working, I was able to set my NIC's HW / MAC address back to what it was, 50:e5:49:36:1d:d3, by using Win7's driver settings for it in Win7's device manager. The upgrade to Oneiric somehow and oddly changed it to aa:00:04:00:0a:04. Once I changed the HW / MAC address back to the original address and rebooted into Oneiric, WOL started working again. Then I checked my WOL client -- an iPhone app called iNet Pro -- and I realized that I had never changed it to wake aa:00:04:00:0a:04 and it was still set to wake 50:e5:49:36:1d:d3. SO... probably a false alarm here. :) I'll close this bug if I am able; otherwise I leave it for the proper admin to do so. [Bug 877951] [NEW] After recent update, shading for window snapping appears even when no window is being moved
Public bug reported: Hi, Sometime in the last 24-48 hours, some update has caused Unity / Window Snapping to start appearing, even when I am not moving a window at all. The problem is intermittent, but once it occurs, the only solution is to log off and back on. I have not yet been able to determine what causes the problem. The problem, more specifically, is that that a large orange box appears if I move my mouse to either the left or right side of the screen, and the box stays there, even if I switch viewports. Terribly annoying and distracting, but otherwise seemingly harmless. It even persists into the Expo view of my four viewports. The attached screenshot.png file shows the problem on the left side, the right side, and in expo view, respectively. Going into expo mode and switching viewports does make the undesired orange box go away, but as soon as I move the mouse to either the left or right side of the screen, the orange box comes back again. Logging off appears to be the only way to fix the problem. The problem does _not_ seems to occur if their is no visible window in the viewport when the mouse is moved either full left or full right. The problem _does_ persist, however, once it has occurred and I switch to another viewport without any visible windows. Just to repeat for clarity: These problems occur simply by moving the mouse to either left or right edge of the screen; I am not moving any windows by any method, nor is any mouse button being clicked and/or held when this occurs. This problems was _not_ occurring after I initially upgraded to Oneiric from Natty -- the problem started only in the last day or two (I have been updating daily). Hope this helps. I presume you meant 'aa-complain' and yes, that fixed it. [Bug 876929] [NEW] Evince crashes (segfault) under Unity with a custom theme
Public bug reported: I have created a custom theme -- a trivial derivation of Ubuntu 11.10's stock Ambiance them, with the only changes being changing the selection color from orange to blue (1 color change in 3 files) -- and everything works fine except that evince crashes with a segfault. I have run strace on evince -- attached -- of which the last four lines are: access(/home/morse/.themes/Dougs Theme/gtk-3.0/gtk.css, F_OK) = 0 open(/home/morse/.themes/Dougs Theme/gtk-3.0/gtk.css, O_RDONLY) = -1 EACCES (Permission denied) --- SIGSEGV (Segmentation fault) @ 0 (0) --- +++ killed by SIGSEGV +++ All the relevant directories (/home, /home/morse, /home/morse/.themes/, etc.) are either mode 755 or 700, files are mode 600, and all have uid/gid that is my account. So, I'm quite puzzled as to why evince is getting a permission denied error, and even more so as to why this would result in a segfault. Any help most appreciated, as I use evince all the time and it's rather annoying having to change my theme back to Ambiance just to get evince to work, whereas all other apps I've used since upgrading to 11.10 work just fine with my slightly customized theme. Thanks. [Bug 876929] Re: Evince crashes (segfault) under Unity with a custom theme
OK, just now I backed up /usr/share/themes/Ambiance to /usr/share/themes/Ambiance.DIST and made the same three trivial changes to the them -- changed selected_bg_color from #f07746 to #008ab8 in gtk-3.0/settings.ini, gtk-3.0/gtkrc, and gtk-2.0/gtkrc -- and switched to this updated Ambiance theme. Evince works fine now, with my minor color change. So, this definitely seems like a bug in evince. Again, my directories and files should all be accessible to evince running as my user (morse): morse@s3 ~ ls -ld /home/morse drwxr-xr-x 96 morse morse 16384 2011-10-17 17:43 /home/morse morse@s3 ~ ls -ld /home/morse/.themes/ drwx-- 6 morse morse 4096 2011-10-17 17:45 /home/morse/.themes/ morse@s3 ~ ls -ld /home/morse/.themes/Dougs Theme/ drwx-- 4 morse morse 4096 2011-07-25 13:24 /home/morse/.themes/Dougs Theme/ and all the dirs and files under 'Dougs Theme' are uid/gid morse/morse and mode 700 (dirs) / 600 (files).
