22.04 network Install bug -- tries to download iso before NIC is up

2023-08-30 Thread Drew Weaver
Hello,

Server is a Dell R660XS. Booting install via ipxe.

It just drops into busybox and says that it cannot download
ubuntu-22.04.2-live-server-amd64.iso

And then about 10 seconds later the NIC it needs to download that file comes up
but by then it's already broken.

Thanks,
-Drew

[Bug 1971132] [NEW] fenics package not built for jammy

2022-05-02 Thread Drew Parsons
Public bug reported:

Hi guys, the fenics package didn't get built for jammy. Other
components are built (dolfin, mshr, etc, likewise dolfinx, etc).

Can the fenics package be added to jammy? It's just a dependency
package, but it makes it easier for users to install the suite.

[Bug 1942623] [NEW] [Wishlist] systemctl CLI UI should allow glob expansion throughout the service name

2021-09-03 Thread Drew Freiberger
Public bug reported:

When attempting to craft a command to query and/or restart all services
with name 'something-*-else', such as 'neutron-*-agent' to match
[neutron-l3-agent, neutron-openvswitch-agent, and neutron-dhcp-agent],
I've found that no services are returned from globs in the middle of the
string. The only supported glob seems to be a * at the end of the
service name. Also, single character globbing with ? is not honored (as
in the last example).

To provide an example, I expect each of these commands to return the
dbus.socket and dbus.service, but only 'systemctl status dbu*' shows the
proper return.

[Bug 1939941] [NEW] Drop down menu issues

2021-08-14 Thread Drew McNaughton
Public bug reported:

I found that about a month or so ago that I was having problems with
dropdown menus in Thunderbird where they would not respond when I
clicked on them. I managed to get around this by using the arrow keys
but I would also have issues with the thunderbird icon in the icon tray
not responding if I suspended the computer with Thunderbird still open.
Now I find that the drop down application menu in Firefox also doesn't
work and when I click on it the menu flashes up very quickly but then
disappears. Also sometimes drop down menus that I have opened continue
to persist in the display even after I have shut down the program, so I
don't think it is a problem just in Mozilla products. I have reported
the bug to Mozilla however just in case.

Thanks.

[Bug 1828534] Re: [19.04][Queens -> Rocky] Upgrading to Rocky resulted in "Services not running that should be: designate-producer"

2021-05-27 Thread Drew Freiberger
I also experienced this on 2 of 3 units of designate running 21.01
charms upgrading from cloud:bionic-stein to cloud:bionic-train with
action-managed-upgrade=false.

Interestingly, the unit that did not exhibit this race was not the
leader.

I've got an SOSreport available if interested.

[Bug 1928470] [NEW] Duplicate image of Icons on Desktop

2021-05-14 Thread Drew McNaughton
Public bug reported:

After I upgraded to Hirsute Hippo the first time I opened the desktop I
noticed that the desktop icons looked blurry. I tried to move them and
then I realised that there was an image underneath the icon which
replicated the icon image. These images could not be moved or deleted
even if the desktop background was changed. Also on restarting they
appeared under with new location of the icons. I deleted all the icons I
could on the desktop via files and was just left with the default trash
and home icons but the same problem still happened although the other
icons were now completely gone. Thanks for your help.

[Bug 1912847] Re: ovs-vswitchd should consider lack of DPDK support fatal

2021-04-20 Thread Drew Freiberger
Here's a reproducer:

juju deploy ubuntu # onto a vm or metal, can't repro with lxd
juju ssh ubuntu/0 sudo apt-get install openvswitch-switch -y
juju ssh ubuntu/0 'sudo ovs-vsctl add-br br0; sudo ovs-vsctl add-port br0
dpdk-p0 -- set Interface dpdk-p0 type=dpdk options:dpdk-devargs=:01:00.0'

Error output from the add-port command is:

ovs-vsctl: Error detected while setting up 'dpdk-p0': could not open network
device dpdk-p0 (Address family not supported by protocol). See ovs-vswitchd
log for details.
ovs-vsctl: The default log directory is "/var/log/openvswitch".

You can then query 'ovs-vsctl show' and see:

Bridge br0
Port dpdk-p0
Interface dpdk-p0
type: dpdk
options: {dpdk-devargs=":01:00.0"}
error: "could not open network device dpdk-p0 (Address family
not supported by protocol)"
Port br0
Interface br0
type: internal

ovs-vsctl -f csv list Interface | grep 'not supported'

provides a response that could also be alerted on as an active
configuration issue rather than alerting on presence of the log entry.

$ sudo ovs-vsctl -f csv list Interface |grep 'not supported'

[Bug 1885430] Re: [Bionic/Stein] Ceilometer-agent fails to collect metrics after restart

2021-03-10 Thread Drew Freiberger
After investigating a bit more, I also find that libvirtd.service was
started at 03:19, and it appears the pollster error leads back to this
failing to connect to libvirt.

"Should-start" is a misnomer. I believe the proper attribute from

[Bug 1804261] Re: Ceph OSD units requires reboot if they boot before vault (and if not unsealed with 150s)

2020-09-29 Thread Drew Freiberger
The bionic-ussuri package has the retries set for 1. My start time
to vault unseal time was about 18 hours. We should have this set to
heal for up to 5 days after machine start.

I'm almost wondering if vaultlocker-decrypt also needs the retries
increased as well.

Here's a workaround I've found for anyone experiencing this
operationally:

After unsealing the vault, loop through ceph-osd units with the
following two loops to decrypt and start the LVM volumes for ceph-osd
services to startup:

for i in $(ls
/etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/vaultlocker-decrypt@*|cut -d/ -f6);
do sudo systemctl start $i; done
for i in $(ls /etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/ceph-volume@*|cut -d/
-f6); do sudo systemctl start $i; done

[Bug 1888571] Re: [Ice Lake] Screen flickering and glitching after install

2020-08-31 Thread Drew Erikson
Latest kernel release still doesn't fix the issue - machine is still
pretty unusable when flickering.

[Bug 1855350] Re: Will not logout or shutdown from guest-session

2020-08-19 Thread Drew Woodard
I don't have much to add other than to say I am also experiencing this issue or
one similar to it.
I am running xfce on ubuntu 20.04 in a kvm virtual machine. The system was
configured to boot to a command prompt with “systemctl set-default
multi-user.target”, so when I want to run xfce this is done with "startxfce4".

(problem description)
if you log in to xfce then immediately log out it will fail with one of these
errors:
session manager must be in idle state when requesting a shutdown
gdbus.error:org.freedesktop.dbus.error.invalidargs: type of message, "(yb)",
does not match expected type "(b)"
-
example scenarios:
reach the desktop, wait 45 seconds or more, try to log out, it works normally
reach the desktop, try to log out immediately, get an error, try a second time,
sometimes it will work
reach the desktop, try to log out immediately, get an error, sit there doing
nothing for a few seconds, sometimes it will log out
-
I tried playing around with the file 50-guest-wrapper.conf as others had
mentioned, but I did not notice any difference.
I also have an identically-configured centos 8 vm and it does not have this
issue.

(uninformed guess)
When reaching the desktop something related to lightdm or xfce is failing in
the background, once a timeout is reached, things work as expected.

[Bug 1226855] Re: Cannot use open-iscsi inside LXC container

2020-08-10 Thread Drew Freiberger
Adding Bootstack to watch this bug, as we are taking ownership of charm-
iscsi-connector which would be ideal to test within lxd confinement, but
requires VM or metal for functional tests.

Re: [Bug 1888571] Re: [Ice Lake] Screen flickering and glitching after install

2020-07-31 Thread Drew Erikson
I’ve also had some issues with the audio, but I’ve been able to fix that up
by fiddling with pulseaudio.

Re the bug fix, should I try a clean install? This isn’t optimal since I’m
mostly set up now, but would this help the bug fix take effect?

I’ve also had this thought. I’ve tried this, but the flickering will start
before then, usually during the startup splash and login screen. Makes me
think that you’re right about it being a kernel bug

I've tried 5.7 and the problem seems to persist - weird, since I thought
that Kernel supported through TIger Lake and this machine runs an Ice Lake.

Yep - I’ve tried removing nomodeset after this update but it hasn’t seemed
to take away the flickering, leaving it on for the time being until the bug
is fixed.

2020-07-24 Thread Drew Erikson
Removing nomodeset reverts back to the original screen flickering problem
with almost zero usability. Are there any other solutions to this?

Thanks for the response here. I’ve been using nomodeset which has gotten
rid of the flickering as a temporary fix, will modeset do the trick?

[Bug 1861941] Re: bcache by-uuid links disappear after mounting bcache0

2020-07-17 Thread Drew Freiberger
I'm having similar issues to this bug and those described by Dmitrii in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/charm-ceph-osd/+bug/1883585 specifically
comment #2 and the last comment.

It appears that if I run 'udevadm trigger --subsystem-match=block', I
get my by-dname devices for bcaches, but if I run udevadm trigger w/out
a subsystem match, something is triggering later than the block
subsystem that is removing the links.

Here are the runs with --verbose to show what appears to be getting
probed on each run:

https://pastebin.ubuntu.com/p/VPvSKRfGt4/

This is with 5.3.0-62 kernel on Bionic.

I also have core and canonical-livepatch snaps installed as did the
environment where Dmitrii has run into this.

[Bug 1886701] Re: Installer crashed after selecting zfs and proceeding to create user page

2020-07-07 Thread Drew
I tried to replicate this one more time. This time it made it past the
user creation screen, but still crashed after while creating file
systems. Seems unrelated to users and more specifically related to
creating zfs file system.

[Bug 1886701] [NEW] Installer crashed after selecting zfs and proceeding to create user page

2020-07-07 Thread Drew
Public bug reported:

I was installing the daily groovy gorilla build via the quickemu script
in order to test some zfs options. I kept all default options until
file system selection. I chose advanced options. Selected ZFS.
Proceeded to the stage where username is entered. I entered my username
and tabbed down to the password field and there it crashed.

[Bug 1874956] [NEW] Window does not fit my screen

2020-04-24 Thread Drew Howden
Public bug reported:

I am using a laptop with a 15.6" screen. When I open Flowblade, the
window fills up the screen, but part of the bottom goes off the screen,
hiding the scroll bar.

To reproduce this, just run Flowblade on a system with a 15.6" monitor.
The window that opens up should fit the screen. Instead part of the
bottom goes off the screen, hiding the scroll bar.

[Bug 1847280] [NEW] Include osc-placement plugin in openstack client package and snap

2019-10-08 Thread Drew Freiberger
Public bug reported:

During troubleshooting of migration errors due to differences in
placement API database allocations from the actual nova allocation
utilization resulting from bugs like lp#1821594, we need to be able to
run commands such as

"openstack resource provider allocation delete $UUID"

The openstack resource provider command sets are provided by the osc-
placement plugin.

Current workaround is to create a venv with the openstackclient and osc-
placement plugin.

virtualenv -p python3 osc
source osc/bin/activate
pip3 install osc-placement openstackclient
./osc/bin/openstack resource provider.

It would be helpful for these commands to be included in the UCA and
snap for Openstack Queens and newer.

placement/queens/cli/index.html#resource-provider-allocation-delete

[Bug 1841132] Re: mpt3sas - storage controller resets under heavy disk io

2019-08-24 Thread Drew Woodard
Hi Kai-Heng, thanks for your response.

I followed your advice and installed these packages from the ppa:
linux-headers-5.3.0-050300rc5_5.3.0-050300rc5.201908182231_all.deb
linux-headers-5.3.0-050300rc5-generic_5.3.0-050300rc5.201908182231_amd64.deb
linux-image-unsigned-5.3.0-050300rc5-generic_5.3.0-050300rc5.201908182231_amd64.deb
linux-modules-5.3.0-050300rc5-generic_5.3.0-050300rc5.201908182231_amd64.deb

I then rebooted the system and checked versions with "uname -a" and "modinfo
mpt3sas":
(kernel 5.3.0) (mpt3sas driver 29.100.00.00)

The stress test has now been running for 4h with no errors, which is 8x as long
as the previous best on 18.04.
I will leave the stress test running overnight in the event that the bug still
exists but occurs less frequently.

[Bug 1841132] [NEW] mpt3sas - storage controller resets under heavy disk io

2019-08-22 Thread Drew Woodard
Public bug reported:

[summary]
when a server running ubuntu 18.04 with an lsi sas controller experiences high
disk io there is a chance the storage controller will reset
this can take weeks or months, but once the controller resets it will keep
resetting every few seconds or few minutes, dramatically degrading disk io
the server must be rebooted to restore the controller to a normal state

[hardware configuration]
server: dell poweredge r7415, purchased 2019-02
cpu/chipset: amd epyc naples
storage controller: "dell hba330 mini" with chipset "lsi sas3008"
drives: 4x samsung 860 pro 2TB ssd

[software configuration]
ubuntu 18.04 server
mdadm raid6
all firmware is fully updated (bios 1.9.3) (hba330 16.17.00.03) (ssd rvm01b6q)

[what happened]
server was operating as a vm host for months without issue
one day the syslog was flooded with messages like "mpt3sas_cm0: sending diag
reset !!" and "Power-on or device reset occurred", along with unusably-slow
disk io
the server was removed from production and I looked for a way to reproduce the
issue

[how to reproduce the issue]
there are probably many ways to product this issue, the hackish way I found to
reliably reproduce it was:
have the four ssds in a mdadm raid6 with ext4 filesystem
create three 500GB files containing random data
open three terminals. one calculates md5sum of file1 in a loop, another does
the same for file2, the third does a copy of file3 to file3-temp in a loop
the number of files is arbitrary, the goal is just to generate a lot of disk io
on files too large to be cached in memory
then initiate an array check with "/usr/share/mdadm/checkarray -a" to cause
even more drive thrashing
within 1-15min the controller will enter the broken state. the longest I ever
saw it take was 30min. I reproduced this several times
rebooting the server restores the controller to a normal state
if the server is not rebooted and the controller is left in this broken state
eventually drives will fall out of the array, and sometimes array/filesystem
corruption will occur

[why this is being reported here]
It's unlikely I am exceeding limits of the hardware since this server chassis
can hold 24 drives and I am only using 4. The controller specs indicate I
should not hit pcie bandwidth limits until at least 16 drives.
My first thought was that the lsi controller firmware was at fault since they
have been historically buggy, however I reproduced this with the newest
firmware "16.17.00.03" and the previous version "15.17.09.06" (versions may be
dell-specific).
I then tried the most recent motherboard bios "1.9.3", and downgraded to
"1.9.2", no change.
I then wanted to eliminate the possibility of a bad drive. swapped out all 4
drives with different ones of the same model, no change.
I then upgraded from the standard 18.04 kernel to the newer backported hwe
kernel, which also came with a newer mpt3sas driver, no change.
I then ran the same test on the same array but with rhel 8, to my surprise I
could no longer reproduce the issue.
-
tl;dr version:
ubuntu 18.04 (kernel 4.15.0) (mpt3sas driver 17.100.00.00) storage controller
breaks in 1-10min
ubuntu 18.04 hwe (kernel 5.0.0) (mpt3sas driver 27.101.00.00) storage
controller breaks in 1-15min, max 30min
rhel 8 (kernel 4.18.0) (mpt3sas driver 27.101.00.00) same stress test on same
array for 19h, no errors

[caveats]
Server os misconfiguration is possible, however this is a rather basic vm host
running kvm and no 3rd-party packages.
I can't conclusively prove this isn't a hardware fault since I don't have a
second unused identical server to test on right now, however the fact that the
problem can be easily reproduced under ubuntu but not under rhel seems
noteworthy.
There is another bug (LP: #1810781) similar to this, I didn't post there
because it's already marked as fixed.
There is also a debian bug (Debian #926202) that encountered this on kernel
4.19.0, but I'm unable to tell if it's the same issue.

[Bug 1832766] Re: LDAP group_members_are_ids = false fails in Rocky/Stein

2019-06-17 Thread Drew Freiberger
It seems that most of our clouds use LDAP backends, which also use
group_member_are_ids = false, but we do not specify a
user_id_attribute.. This then falls back to the default of using the
"CN" attribute.

It just so happens that Active directory entities are labeled with
cn=$sAMAccountName,$user_tree_dn, and so the default code to assume
user_id_attribute is the first field of the DN works in most production
cases.

Suggest renaming title to "Specifying user_id_attribute that is not the
distinguished name's primary key field in LDAP database fails when
referencing group members if group_members_are_ids = false"

@petevg, as for the field being passed in, it does contain a UID,
however, UID == user_name for keystone. $user_id_attribute (uidNumber)
is the field keystone should be looking for within the DN's record to
equate to user_id in the code context.

[Bug 1832766] Re: LDAP group_members_are_ids = false fails in Rocky/Stein

2019-06-17 Thread Drew Freiberger
We do not believe it is a good idea in this production cloud to change
the user_id_attribute to = uid, as the user mapping table has already
stored the uidNumbers as the user_id_attribute, and this would lead to
database inconsistency unless we wiped the user table from the database.

user_id_attribute is supposed to be like the passwd database UID field,
and user_name_attribute is supposed to be your login like "dfreiberger".

Please see documentation regarding posixAccount affinity for these variables on
this page for configuration guide:
https://docs.openstack.org/keystone/pike/admin/identity-integrate-with-ldap.html

The intention of the keystone ldap integration documentation clearly
states that it expects a full DN in the group_member_attribute if
group_members_are_ids = false. This means that the code must
dereference the dn uid=drew,ou=users,dc=mysite,dc=com and return the
user_id_attribute field if the function needs to reference the user_id
field.

2019-06-11 Thread Drew Freiberger
Sorry for my assumption there. I see that it appears it was backported
into the UCA 14.0.1-0ubuntu3.

I should update that this does not fix all keystone-ldap functionality
for rocky.

Please review lp#1832265 for additional code paths which may need
similar patching, as this cloud is running 14.0.1-0ubuntu3.

[Bug 1831221] Re: do-release-upgrade fails due to package libpam0g:amd64 1.1.8-3.2ubuntu2.1

2019-06-01 Thread Drew Peterson
Ah, that was the piece I was missing. Somehow after adding the debian-
installer repo in order to play with d-i creation, either I accidentally
installed cdebconf-udeb, or some other package took it on as a
dependency and I didn't even notice it (for a few years I might add).

I'm honestly surprised this hadn't caused issues before. It certainly
wreaked havoc on my system during this attempted upgrade. I was
eventually able to brute-force the removal of cdebconf and reconfigure
debconf and fix my broken system.

This is resolved, and was not an issue with libpam but rather my own
misfortune and cdebconf being _almost good enough_ to fool me.

[Bug 1668771] Re: systemd-resolved negative caching for extended period of time

2019-05-23 Thread Drew Freiberger
This affects bionic openstack cloud environments when os-*-hostname is
configured for keystone, and the keystone entry is deleted temporarily
from upstream dns, or the upstream dns fails providing no record for the
lookup of keystone.endpoint.domain.com.

We have to then flush all caches across the cloud once DNS issue is
resolved, rather than auto-healing at 60 seconds as if we were running
nscd with negative-ttl set to 60 seconds.

Ultimately, a negative TTL that is settable would be ideal, or the
ability to not cache negative hits would also be useful. Only
workaround now is to not use caches or to operationally flush caches as
needed.

[Bug 1819453] Re: keystone-ldap TypeError: cannot concatenate 'str' and 'NoneType' object

2019-03-19 Thread Drew Freiberger
This is only confirmed on xenial Ocata.

When querying the domain, as it loops through users returned from the all user
query of LDAP, it tries to create mappings in keystone for any new users.

https://github.com/openstack/keystone/blob/stable/ocata/keystone/identity/core.py#L599

This hits the method
keystone.identity.mapping_backends.sql.create_id_mapping()  If the hash
of the domain and the user data exist in id_mappings, it tosses the
exception:

https://github.com/openstack/keystone/blob/stable/ocata/keystone/identity/mapping_backends/sql.py#L80

it then tries to fall back to querying the public_id of the existing
local_entity which doesn't exist and hence returns None. However, if it
would just return that public_id that just tossed as duplicate from this
line, it could work around the issue.

https://github.com/openstack/keystone/blob/stable/ocata/keystone/identity/mapping_backends/sql.py#L80

This is the duplicate being detected, why not just return that duplicate
ID rather than having to return a reverse lookup of a potentially non-
existent object.

Basically, this customer deletes entries from LDAP, then we delete them from
the local_users and users tables, and sometimes forget to remove from
id_mappings table as well. This is done manually because there's no way to
delete a keystone user w/out the user existing in the ldap backend still. (best
practice being to disable the user's accountActive flag and leave them in LDAP)

So, operator error working around one bug is creating what appears to be
a new bug when the ldap user is recreated.

When we query the id_mappings table, we found 402 entries in id_mapping
table that don't belong to the domain any longer in nonlocal_users table
or users table. So, these 402 entries could not be re-created as new
ldap users.

To reproduce:

create LDAP domain with user foo and query openstack domain so user foo gets a
user entry in keystone.
remove user foo from user and nonlocal_user table in mysql database, leaving
entry in id_mappings table.
Try to query domain (openstack user list --domain ), user foo should
cause a traceback when it tries to recreate the id_mapping.

Ultimately, I believe we have to cleanup the id_mappings table, however, I
believe the invalid assumption at the line below is still worth discussion:
https://github.com/openstack/keystone/blob/stable/ocata/keystone/identity/mapping_backends/sql.py#L81

[Bug 1818002] [NEW] Ubiquity crashes on grub installation

2019-02-27 Thread Drew Walton
Public bug reported:

Installing from latest Disco daily image, Ubiquity crashes when
installing Grub in the installed system. Unsure if related to my

In order to install to a raid0 btrfs set, I had to manually create the
partition with mkfs.btrfs and tell Ubiquity not to format the partition.
