No change. /sys/class/backlist has acpi_video0 listed.

keyboard backlight controls do modify 'brightness' file, but there is no
change to the backlight.

[Bug 1794980] [NEW] Outdated icons used on slides

2018-09-28 Thread Joey-Elijah Sneddon via ubuntu-bugs
Public bug reported:

Affects: ubuntu 18.10;
Package: ubiquity-slideshow-ubuntu;
Expectation: icons used in slideshow should match the icons used on the desktop;
What happens: icons don't match or are inconsistent;

++

A minor bug, but some of the icons used in the Ubuntu slides that refer
to software and/or features which are installed or available on Ubuntu
do not match the 'new' Suru icon theme set.

For example, the "music" slide shows the upstream Rhythmbox icon, and
the "Photos" slide shows the upsream Shotwell icon. Neither icon appears
on the default Ubuntu desktop, meaning a user who installs Ubuntu 18.10
for the first time will have a hard time trying to locate those apps by
the icons shown in the slideshow.

Similarly the "assistive technologies", "languages" and "appearance"
icons are affected, while the Firefox icon and LibreOffice icons shown
on the "browse" slide are outdated as both upstreams now have 'newer'
icons.

** Affects: ubiquity-slideshow-ubuntu (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

2018-01-12 Thread Elijah
Hi,

I'm very sorry I did not reply on time.

Did you originally install quagga from a source other than Ubuntu? = No.
I have this problem when at the end of installation of OS updates. In
trying to fix the issue, I tried reinstalling quagga but it did not work
either.

Re: [Bug 390508] Re: notifyOSD ignores the expire timeout parameter

2015-03-18 Thread elijah
Is it just me? I noticed today that `notify-send -t TIME` has started to
actually honor the -t flag, so long as TIME is 1000 milliseconds or more
(less than 1000 milliseconds and it appears to use 2000 milliseconds).

I think I am running stock 14.10. Maybe someone accidentally implemented
-t despite the intransigence of the Ubuntu developers on this tracker.

[Bug 1113420] Re: Alt+ window menu shortcuts cannot be disabled

2015-01-05 Thread Elijah Lynn
The above comment didn't work for me. It seems in Ubuntu 14.04, Nautilus
uses GTK-3.0 and in 3.0 they moved away from the gtkrc files and use
settings.ini files in various locations.

For Nautilus on Ubuntu 14.04:

Create the following path & file if it doesn't already exist.
/home/YOURUSERNAME/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini
Then add:
[Settings]
gtk-enable-mnemonics = 0
Then logout and log back in.

2014-10-09 Thread Elijah Lynn
Fyi, for some reason the workarounds of using Ctrl + Alt + F1/F2 don't
quite work on my Thinkpad W510, it puts the machine into sleep mode.
However, Ctrl + Alt + F6 drops me to a system terminal correctly and
then Ctl + Alt + F7 brings me back to a black border free Unity.

2014-09-02 Thread Elijah Van Houten
Hi,

Thanks for the reply. Yes, that’s exactly where I had Octave installed
(/usr/local/bin), it was the default install location when I installed
octave from my user account.

I’ll just delete and reinstall, but it sent up a lot of errors in the
Ubuntu 12-14 upgrade, did make me worry that the upgrade was going to
crash mid-way through. It didn’t (thanks!), so all’s fine other than
Octave is gone.

Cheers,

[Bug 446657] Re: Bluetooth's on/off status doesn't update from the SetProperty D-Bus method that bluetoothd sends

2014-08-27 Thread Elijah Lynn
Yes, very depressing. This is why people use Macs.

But there is no way I am going to use a Mac's OS and this is free and
open software so I would like to get to the bottom of this. I just read
through this entire issue and
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=638117#c9 and it appears this
is now a true upstream with gnome-bluetooth. It also appears to be
related to those with an actual hardware wireless radio or bluetooth
kill switch. This may explain why it works for certain people.

This is present in Ubuntu 14.04 with bluez 4.101-0ubuntu13 and gnome-
bluetooth 3.8.2.1-0ubuntu4 and not sure it matters but I also have
indicator-bluetooth 0.0.6+14.04.20140207-0ubuntu2.

I got this with a dpkg-query -l "*blue*" in case anyone else is wondering what
versions they are running.

ps. Possible duplicate here -> https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source

[Bug 280811] Re: thinkpad bluetooth hotkey fn+F5 regression: not saved across reboot

2014-08-27 Thread Elijah Lynn
This is either a duplicate of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/446657 or very
closely linked.

It appears this is an upsteam bug in gnome-bluetooth and is still open
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=638117#c9

The bug is currently present on Ubuntu 14.04 on a Thinkpad W510, that
has a hardware killswitch for all wireless.

[Bug 1321351] Re: Mouse randomly starts moving and clicking

I cannot confirm it happens on Windows but the reports here are all
Windows based => https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/W-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops

It is the same exact phenomenon that is happening on Ubuntu 13.04. I am
upgrading to 14.04 this weekend so maybe that will help. I will post
back if it does.

I am having this same issue with my Thinkpad W510 Touchscreen (Wacom).
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-input-
evdev/+bug/1321351

If you google for HP TouchSmart Phantom Touches then you will get
reports of others having this issue. This being said I don't think it is
software related.

http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Display-and-Video/HP-Envy-
Touchsmart-15-Ghost-touch/td-p/2870001

A temp fix to see if it is your touchscreen is next time it happens,
open a console and type "xinput list" to get a list of devices, then
grab the numeric ID, say 15 for instance. Then run "xinput disable 15".
Your issues should immediately stop. It sucks, I know.

[Bug 1321351] Re: Mouse randomly starts moving and clicking

2014-06-24 Thread Elijah Lynn
I will add that the only way I have found to cure the issue is to run

xinput to get a list of devices, in my case the Wacom touch input is 15.

Then:

xinput disable 15

And no more touchscreen but at least I can use the computer :/

[Bug 33102] Re: Pause / Print Screen keys can't be set in Keyboard Shortcuts

2014-03-28 Thread Elijah Lynn
** Description changed:

  Description of the problem:
In gnome-keybinding-properties you cannot set the Pause or Print Screen keys
as shortcuts (even though Take a screenshot starts out being set to Print!)

  Steps to reproduce:
- 1. Start gnome-keybinding-properties .
- 2. Scroll down to Take a screenshot .
+ 1. Start gnome-keybinding-properties.
+ 2. Scroll down to Take a screenshot.
  3. Click on Take a screenshot and press backspace. The shortcut will be set
to Disabled.
  4. Click on Take a screenshot and press the Print Screen button.

  Expected results:
Key to be assigned and Print to appear in the Shortcut column.

  Actual results:
  A warning dialog saying:
'The shortcut "Print" cannot be used because it will become unusable to type
using this key.
Please try with a key such as Control, Alt or Shift at the same time.'
  appears.

  Additional information:
Pause suffers this problem too (I use it for Play/Pause) and if you set
Shift-Pause as a keybinding then rhythmbox and totem will respond to plain
unshifted Pause too.

[Bug 803296] Re: [regression] Compiz Resize plugin: When "Default Resize Mode" = Normal, resizing is extremely slow and CPU intensive

2013-11-06 Thread Elijah Lynn
Still an issue on 13.04 w/compiz 0.9.9.0. Too lazy to file new bug.

Normal is unusable. Very hard to do responsive web development like
this.

[Bug 1247280] Re: [43192RU, Conexant CX20585, Mic, Internal] Crackling sound

2013-11-01 Thread Elijah Lynn
** Description changed:

Recording through internal microphone produces crackling noise on
playback. This happens regardless of settings for input device using
alsamixer. When using the ubuntu-bug wizard I said the first test passed
because the audio was remarkably better than the 2nd but there was still
minor crackling, so I am not sure how to do some ALSA only tests to
verify the culprit really is PulseAudio, please advise.

Update: I just discovered arecord and did a test. The crackling is still
  present with arecord.
+
+ Update2: I used set options snd-hda-intel position_fix=2 a second time
+ and it appears audio is recording correctly now (and saved correctly). I
+ had it set to 1 for a long time it appears, not sure if I hadn't added
+ that if it would do the same behaviour of set options snd-hda-intel
+ position_fix=2.

  Tried so far:

  set options snd-hda-intel position_fix=1
  load-module module-udev-detect tsched=0

[Bug 1065400] Re: Support for loading Broadcom bluetooth firmware

2013-06-14 Thread Elijah Q Johnson
Hello Jesse,

I followed your instructions from comment 11 and bluetooth stops working
while booting with fw-0a5c_21e8.hcd is in the /lib/frimware/ directory

I used hex3hcd tool with RAMUSB21E8 /
BCM20702A1_001.002.014.0889.0896.hex for IOGEAR GBU521 / 0a5c:21e8

here is the dmesg | grep Bluetooth output while fw-0a5c_21e8.hcd is in
the /lib/frimware/ directory:

[ 19.567221] Bluetooth: Core ver 2.16
[ 19.567277] Bluetooth: HCI device and connection manager initialized
[ 19.567287] Bluetooth: HCI socket layer initialized
[ 19.567291] Bluetooth: L2CAP socket layer initialized
[ 19.567299] Bluetooth: SCO socket layer initialized
[ 20.533843] Bluetooth: firmware loaded
[ 20.916739] Bluetooth: BNEP (Ethernet Emulation) ver 1.3
[ 20.916744] Bluetooth: BNEP filters: protocol multicast
[ 20.916755] Bluetooth: BNEP socket layer initialized
[ 20.917965] Bluetooth: RFCOMM TTY layer initialized
[ 20.917978] Bluetooth: RFCOMM socket layer initialized
[ 20.917980] Bluetooth: RFCOMM ver 1.11
[ 23.016021] Bluetooth: hci0 command 0x0c56 tx timeout
[ 25.020019] Bluetooth: hci0 command 0x0c6d tx timeout
[ 27.024044] Bluetooth: hci0 command 0x0c1a tx timeout
[ 29.028013] Bluetooth: hci0 command 0x0c24 tx timeout

and here the output while bluetooth partially working and fw-
0a5c_21e8.hcd isn't in the /lib/frimware/ director:

[ 20.186088] Bluetooth: Core ver 2.16
[ 20.208815] Bluetooth: HCI device and connection manager initialized
[ 20.208827] Bluetooth: HCI socket layer initialized
[ 20.208831] Bluetooth: L2CAP socket layer initialized
[ 20.208839] Bluetooth: SCO socket layer initialized
[ 20.330770] Bluetooth: can't load firmware, may not work correctly
[ 21.719953] Bluetooth: BNEP (Ethernet Emulation) ver 1.3
[ 21.719957] Bluetooth: BNEP filters: protocol multicast
[ 21.719968] Bluetooth: BNEP socket layer initialized
[ 21.724278] Bluetooth: RFCOMM TTY layer initialized
[ 21.724294] Bluetooth: RFCOMM socket layer initialized
[ 21.724297] Bluetooth: RFCOMM ver 1.11

and yes if I do a boot into windows with the proper drviers installed
and then restarted into linux it fully functional (both a2dp and hsp/hfp
work) as long as fw-0a5c_21e8.hcd isn't in the /lib/frimware/ director
in linux and when I turn off the computer the bluetooth only works with
a2dp again and not hsp/hfp

note: In windows is says the device is a BCM20702A0 in device under
control panel while looking at the tbcbtums-win7x86-brcm.inf info for
0a5c:21e8 it says its a 20702A1 dongle

This issue is also affecting my Lenovo Z580 with Intel Ivybridge. Some
boots get lucky, the unlucky boots force me to painfully hold down the
power button untill the computer hard resets.

Re: [Bug 390508] Re: notifyOSD ignores the expire timeout parameter

2013-04-25 Thread elijah
I love this thread. It is the bug that keeps on giving, year after year,
each time someone spends a few hours in frustration and then stumbles
across this bug. Frustrations turns to disbelief and then finally to
resignation.

[Bug 862430] Re: window flicker for a short time after switching workspaces

2013-02-05 Thread Elijah Lynn
I cannot contribute code but I can contribute money. I will donate $100
to Ubuntu via the download page and the Compiz team (I need a donation
link) if this is pushed as part of normal updates to 12.04 by Feb 28th.

So, that is $200 contributed to the larger effort if this is in by Feb
28th!

@Christoph, that is a good point.

@Zoubidoo, I think that would be a good solution, I would even settle
with something I could flag on or off via command line. I would suggest
it be off by default though as I suspect not many people (majority
percentage) have this issue.

There are also at least 820 other people who think "something" should be
done about this -->

Please reconsider this as a valid papercut, it makes me want to leave

happen.

[Bug 1040309] Re: Network manager cannot find new networks immediately

2012-08-29 Thread Elijah Lynn
I highly disagree with closing this as invalid, this is a horrible user
experience and needs to be fixed. When I click wifi networks I should
not have to wait up to two minutes for the network to show up. This is a
way to lose a new Ubuntu user immediately and is completely
unacceptable.

I can confirm that the workaround from "Toby (to-mueller87) wrote on
2012-08-09" worked for me as well (Bug #1041915 that I filed is a duplicate of
this one) .
I did this:
cp 40-libsane.rules 40-libsane.rules-2012-08-26-for-scanner-breaks-apt
sudo rm 40-libsane.rules

Then the repair using the "Ubuntu Software Center" worked.

The only change I had made to /lib/udev/rules.d/40-libsane.rules was
following
http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/linux/en/instruction_scn1c.html#u9.10
which said to add this line:

 # Brother scanners
 ATTRS{idVendor}=="04f9", ENV{libsane_matched}="yes"

I added that line while working to get my Brother MFC-7360N scanner
working as a non-root. I'm not sure if adding that line was needed.

[Bug 1040309] [NEW] Network manager cannot find new networks immediately

2012-08-22 Thread Elijah Lynn
Public bug reported:

When I activate mobile hotspot on my Android (Galaxy Nexus) it takes a
long time for it to show up in the available Wireless Networks.

This is a bug.

It should show immediately, at least within a few seconds of me clicking
to see if there are new networks. When a user clicks the wifi icon it
should automatically scan for new networks and continue to do so as long
as the dialogue is active with the mouse.

The last time I tested it took 110 seconds, nearly two minutes to find
the new access point.

[Bug 1034683] [NEW] Seahorse/Gnome Keyring stop working

2012-08-08 Thread Elijah Lynn
Public bug reported:

This happens spontaneously. Sometimes my ssh keys do not prompt for
password and the ssh command just hangs, at the sametime by Ubuntu One
login stops working and sometimes Lastpass stops working in Chrome too
(but not FF). A restart does not fix it but sometimes just shutting down
and waiting X minutes/hours does.

If I go to Seahorse and right click the login keyring and then "unlock"
nothing happens.

Not sure where the issue lies.

Please help me, this is very frustrating.

[Bug 1028044] [NEW] Seahorse is flakey, no gui prompt for keys

2012-07-23 Thread Elijah Lynn
Public bug reported:

Normally I login and get a password prompt, now after some updates that
doesn't happen anymore. In addition, when I SSH using a key with a
password stored in Seahorse I don't get a prompt therefore cannot login.
In addition to that the Chromium (18) Lastpass extension does not sign
in, although Chrome 20 and Firefox 14 it works on.

The other night I was trying to troubleshoot it with multiple restarts
and no go. I booted up the next day and it worked fine, but right after
I just installed the latest batch of updates a few hours ago it broke
again.

Not sure what to do, any ideas? Upgrade Seahorse or some other program?

[Bug 1003128] [NEW] Brightness controls not working on Thinkpad W510

2012-05-22 Thread Elijah Lynn

the brightness slider but the screen does not respond. Neither does the
brightness slider in the system settings. It does appear that if I set

the location of the slider just before restart.

[Bug 947748] Re: Brightness control not working after latest update

2012-05-19 Thread Elijah Lynn
Same here on a Lenovo Thinkpad W510. The brightness sliider in settings
does not work as well as the hardware keys. I am using Nvidia drivers.
What is also interesting is that I rebooted 2 times before now and the
hardware keys did not even bring up the brightness slider overlay on the
top right, but after the latest reboot it appears it is back but just
doesn't do anything.

[Bug 959339] Re: Launcher, Alt-Tab - clicking on launcher item or selecting a app in Alt-Tab raises all app windows, not just most recently focused

2012-05-08 Thread Elijah Lynn
Okay, so how does a person who really enjoyed this bug do what it undid?
I want to alt+tab to an application and have all windows focus/appear
from that group, like Mac OS X.

Here is a another person asking for it -->

I think both are valid and useful cases but sometimes I just want to get
all the windows focused. How do I do that now?

[Bug 938448] Re: On multi-monitor, mouse gets stuck in the middle, especially going right to left

2012-04-25 Thread Elijah Lynn
In reference to comment #10 - This seems to be the same setting as what
is in CCSM and is great to have it there but it seems that when I select
"laptop" from the list it removes the menu from my laptop and places it
on the secondary monitor instead. This is what CCSM does as well. I am
using the Nvidia Settings manager if it matters, the laptop is set to
primary display in nvidia settings.

Right now with latest 12.04 there is no way for me to disable this
second menu.

and it is locked when Bluetooth is both and and off after a restart,
which is worse than with 3.2.0-21-generic. At least with
3.2.0-21-generic I can just leave the bluetooth disabled and it will
work.

K, just got a new SSD so I did another fresh install. I recreated it,

If I restart while Bluetooth ON = mouse is locked out of OS, Bluetooth

Good to know Michael. This could be a pretty huge feature for Mac
