[Bug 1879488] Re: raw NEF thumbnails not processed

2021-08-14 Thread François Tissandier
Sony ARW are not working, even after adding the mime type to
"gdk-pixbuf-thumbnailer.thumbnailer"
Not sure whose fault is it, but it's frustrating not to have any thumbnail for
all the RAWs if you have a Sony camera.

[Bug 1639809] [NEW] Problem with Apache & Subversion versions in Trusty

2016-11-07 Thread François Tissandier
Public bug reported:

With a Trusty server configured with backports enabled, I met this
problem :

-installed Apache2
-installed subversion
-installed libapache2-svn

Apache won't start, in version 2.4.10 :

apache2: Syntax error on line 140 of /etc/apache2/apache2.conf: Syntax error on
line 2 of /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/authz_svn.load: Cannot load
/usr/lib/apache2/modules/mod_authz_svn.so into server:
/usr/lib/apache2/modules/mod_authz_svn.so: undefined symbol: ap_hook_force_authn

I have deactivated the backports, then removed and reinstalled Apache,
this time it comes in version 2.4.7, and is working fine with the SVN
module. Apparently Apache version was too recent, and not compatible
with the 1.8.8 version of Subversion.

[Bug 1295049] [NEW] Videos are showing in Totem but not in some applications

2014-03-20 Thread François Tissandier
Public bug reported:

I really don't know where to report this bug ! :)

I have installed Trusty in a virtual machine on my laptop.
I'm trying to edit subtitles on a video. The video is played without any
problem in Totem.
However in the two apps that I tried to edit the subtitles, I only have the
sound. I have tried to transcode the video to a totally different codec, and
it's the same.

Launching the subtitle editors in a terminal, I see this error :

** Message: don't know how to handle video/mpeg, mpegversion=(int)4,
parsed=(boolean)true, systemstream=(boolean)false
Got video info: width=0, height=0, aspect_Ratio=0, frame_rate=0,
has_audio=True, has_video=False
Got video duration: 00:09:44.916

One of the application tells me that a codec is missing. Which I find
weird since totem is playing them fine, and the codecs are nothing
exotic (h264 MPEG4)

Same videos same apps are working fine with Saucy.

[Bug 980796] [NEW] Missing information in the software center

2012-04-13 Thread François Tissandier
Public bug reported:

Technically speaking, no problem.

For the lambda user installing this plugin for Nautilus, what will
happen ?

If he reads the description, he knows it's located in a context menu. He
will try. And nothing.

I think it's really important to add something in the description ! Like
please close and reopen your session to activate this option in
Nautilus.

Otherwise I'm quite sure some will think that the installation didn't
work.

[Bug 912522] Re: usb_test fails on non-writable filesystems

2012-01-05 Thread François Tissandier
The test needs to verify that the drive is writable, so if I can't
write to it, it should still fail, but do so in a graceful manner.

Are you sure ? What is this test supposed to do ? I thought it was just
to check if Ubuntu can mount a partition from a USB stick/harddrive. Why
should it necessarily be writable ? I know that most partitions should
and will be. But let's say you are doing in the test with an external
harddrive used on a Mac ? Or maybe an NTFS partition not closed
properly. Does it mean that this test is failing ? I don't think so.

But then it's a bit complicated to perform this test. It should react
accordingly to the partition format. And maybe just do a read test on
partitions Ubuntu can't write on.

No, it's not the same bug as in #2 :

the message just does NOT appear in the chat window. I have to open the

It's not about the indicator, it's about the message being notified, but
not appearing in the chat window.

What do you mean by the empathy chat log file ? If you mean the file
containing the history with the user, I'm not sure if the problem will
appear there, as the history is not missing anything. I will check if I
see anything weird in this file.

[Bug 887049] Re: USB HDD verification seems to be working, yet it's marked as No

2011-12-13 Thread François Tissandier
With this new version, I still have the no answer ticked after the

here is the partition table :

1 primary, NTFS,

I can write on all NTFS partitions when mounted, but NOT on the ext3
partition though. That could be the reason why it's failing ?

[Bug 493322] Re: [Wishlist] Add resize option set longest side to ...

2011-11-28 Thread François Tissandier
If you put 800x800 as the desired size, the longest side will be 800, and the
other side will be calculated to keep the same ratio. That's how I always
resized my photos to publish online : I put 2000 in both field, and there you
go !
So to me, the only additional option that could be added would be a tickbox
called keep aspect ratio. Because right now, if you really want 2000x2000,
with a non square initial image, you cannot do it.

[Bug 897332] [NEW] Inform the user that the conversion is finished, and refresh the folder in Nautilus

2011-11-28 Thread François Tissandier
Public bug reported:

Just did my usual work with this script: resize, to 50%. In Oneiric,
with 8 photos of 3Mo or so. Nothing happened. Still my big photos... I
tried again, nothing. Tried by putting the size manually, nothing. Then
after refreshing the folder, I realized that I just resized my photos
three times. It was very fast, and I was not informed that it was done.
And as the folder was not refreshed, I thought the images were still as
big, as their size was still the initial one.

computers. On a Dell e4200 with an SSD harddrive, the boot process is
faster than the shutdown ! It used to be faster, like 5 seconds or so.

[Bug 764891] Re: Notification of instant messages is not visible enough

2011-10-24 Thread François Tissandier
As my bug was marked as a duplicate of this one, let me just add a
remark :

it's not just about making the enveloppe blink. For a non-first message
in Empathy, the enveloppe is not even changing ! If you don't have the
dash visible, you simply just can't see that you got a message. And even
if you see the dash, the indicator for a new message in Empathy is hard
to notice.

Furthermore, the enveloppe is changing with every new email. So it would
be more coherent to make the enveloppe change also for every message.
Otherwise the user will simply not understand what's going on.

To logout and login didn't fix it.
I have reinstalled my Oneiric installation, keeping the same /home
But still the same, after installing Citrix by using the .deb, it didn't show
up. Plus I had to manually give +x rights to the .desktop file, and manually
install a file from the 32 bits libmotif library... Still a very poor installer

[Bug 877221] [NEW] Graphical glitch when selecting the disc

2011-10-18 Thread François Tissandier
Public bug reported:

When I burn an ISO, there is a little graphical glitch with the disc
selection. The disc is displayed with some unnecessary framing, and it
does NOT appear in the selection box after you click on it. It's still
possible to burn, you just have to press the button. But you don't see
that you have actually chosen the right disc.

See the including capture, it's what is displayed when you click on the
field. After clicking on it, it disappears (see capture #2, the disc is
selected, I can click on burn).

[Bug 877299] [NEW] Reinstallation of multiple softwares through the sync tool is too long

2011-10-18 Thread François Tissandier
Public bug reported:

I'm using the new sync tool to reinstall all my software on my computer
after formatting. I have maybe 20 to 30 softwares to reinstall.

The tool is giving me the list, it's really a nice feature. However, it can be
improved, as currently:
-I click on the first item, it starts installing
-I click on another software, it starts installing
-but as soon as a software is installed, it refreshs the list, and I have to
wait until it appears again to try to click on the next software before the
next installation is finished

It would be better if the screen was not refreshing, or if we could tick
all the softwares to reinstall, then run the install.

It's not a bug, just a suggestion for an improvement.

[Bug 876555] [NEW] Can't show Empathy window after reduced

2011-10-17 Thread François Tissandier
Public bug reported:

I have opened one chat window, and the list of online users of Empathy
-I reduce the Empathy main window (with the list of online contacts)
-I move on a new virtual desktop
-I click on the chat icon in the message indicator to open it again : the
windows doesn't show up, but I get a buzz effect on the icon in the dash.
-I click on the Empathy icon in the dash : it just focus on the chat window. If
I click again, it runs the expose mode, with the chat window, but an
invisible list window (see attached capture). If I click on the right side of
the desktop where the list should be displayed, it actually move on the right
desktop and show the list. But you have to guess where to click..

Expected behavior : when clicking on the chat icon in the message
indicator, it should display the main window of the chat applications OR
all the windows of the application.

[Bug 873946] [NEW] First messages from a contact do not appear

2011-10-14 Thread François Tissandier
Public bug reported:

On a jabber server (Wildfire)
Sometimes when someone sends me a message, the tab opens, but there is nothing
appearing. If I send an answer, I will see the next incoming messages. And in
the history for the user, I see the previous invisible messages. But they are
just missing from the chat window.

And it's impossible so far to reproduce it easily. If I close the tab
and ask the person to contact me again, it appears. I'm trying to find
the specific conditions for this problem, I will add my comments here.

[Bug 836528] [NEW] The user doesn't know where to find this tool after installation

2011-08-29 Thread François Tissandier
Public bug reported:

The description in the Software center is quite good : This package
adds a Resize Images... menu item to the context menu of all images..

However, after installation, there is nothing in Nautilus.

A simple restart of Nautilus is enough, but the user doesn't know that.
It's not critical, as a simple reboot will fix this issue, but it would
be even better if a message like You need to restart the file manager
to enable this option. Do you want to do this now ? (all your opened
file browser windows will be closed) was displayed after installation.

2011-08-25 Thread François Tissandier
Yes, that would fix this particular problem.

But in my opinion, given the way Unity is working, a keywords field
would be nice. I would then put play, player, music, mp3, audio, video,
clips, cd, albums, media, collection, organize etc... etc... I know I'm
probably talking about a field which does not exist, but Unity is about
redefining the way we use Ubuntu, so I throw ideas without really
thinking about the technical constraints. Maybe improvement the
description is a nice first step, keywords would be a second
improvement. Thanks anyway if you can at least implement the first fix !

[Bug 785220] [NEW] Only one CPU core wakes up from sleep

2011-05-19 Thread François Tissandier
Public bug reported:

Using Natty with a Q9550
After putting the computer on sleep, when it wakes up, I just have one core
running. The other 3 cores are just not there, not even appearing in the system
monitor.

[Bug 784435] [NEW] Drag drop a file on the Unity launcher should create a new email with the attached file

2011-05-18 Thread François Tissandier
Public bug reported:

I want to email a file to someone. Usually, I right click the file, and
use the sent to option of Nautilus. But I thought it would be easier
to use the dock, just by drag dropping the file on the launcher. It's
not working, but I think it would be nice !

[Bug 772169] [NEW] Favorite contacts always appear even when offline

2011-04-28 Thread François Tissandier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

In a freshly upgraded Natty, the favorite contacts always appear in the
list, even if they are offline. In Maverick, they were hidden when
offline, just like the other contacts. I don't see why they are always
displayed, maybe it's useful in some cases, but on our Jabber network,
it's not.

The expected behavior would be :

-to hide them also
-or to give the option to make them always visible

[Bug 771867] [NEW] Indicator-weather is in the technical items in Software Center

2011-04-27 Thread François Tissandier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: indicator-weather

I was looking for an indicator applet to show the weather in my Natty. I
looked for weather in the software center, but didn't find anything. I
had to search online, to see that the indicator-weather package was
what I was looking for. I finally found it in the Software center, but i
had to display the technical items to find it. Do you really think it's

[Bug 733349] Re: Add 'minimize all windows' option to the quicklist of running applications

2011-04-21 Thread François Tissandier
Mark, what I don't understand in this case is that :

-it's the standard behavior in Gnome, so people are used to it

-I agree that you can use the icon to minimize, but what if you want to
minimize several applications ? You have to move your mouse a lot. Using
a click in the taskbar is very quick

-and last but not least, it's not like if this option was replacing
another more interesting behavior ! And it's exactly how it's working
for the applications and files folders lenses ! You click, it
opens. You click again, it hides it. I really find it a pity that this
click is not used. Especially as it's the simplest operation on a lens.
A right click + something is much longer.

I guess I should write all this on the Ayatana ML. But I tried to get
used to this behavior, and I still find myself clicking on the
application icons and waiting. Maybe it's a bad habit. And even if it's
one, I still think it's a pity to waste this click. Maybe the minimize
function is not the right one for it, I'm open to any good idea. But as
of today, it's wasted to me. Too bad, Unity is quite good at making
things efficient, a single click is still something worth using I think
:)

[Bug 733349] Re: Add 'minimize all windows' option to the quicklist of running applications

2011-04-21 Thread François Tissandier
I forgot about this multi-windows option...

But playing with it brings me to the same conclusion:
-I have 3 terminals on my desktop
-i click the lens, it shows me an expose view of the 3 terminals.
-if click on the lens again to close this expose view, and nothing happens.

Maybe I have terrible habits, but that's the first thing I noticed why
trying it.

[Bug 701024] [NEW] Some technical items are not so technical

2011-01-10 Thread François Tissandier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

Typical example: I just installed Banshee. I was using Rhythmbox, and
the Magnatune option. I want to install it in Banshee, as it's missing.
I open the software center, and simply type Magnatune. There are a few
results, but nothing related to Banshee. I didn't look into the
technical items as I thought it would never be there. Why would this
option to add a new music provider be technical? And as I discovered
afterwards, it was actually in those technical items.

To me, the technical items term is a quite misleading in this case. I
don't think newbies will try to click on this option if they are looking
for a new functionnality. And they will be left thinking that there is
no option to do that with the software when in fact it was just a few
clicks away.

I don't know what is the perfect solutions, maybe make a difference
between the actual technical items and the add-ons like this?

[Bug 671397] [NEW] Add an option to open the file browser when a path is highlighted

2010-11-05 Thread François Tissandier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

Very often when I use the terminal, I find a reference to a
file/directory that I want to check/open. Then the fastest option for me
if to highlight it, copy it, then click to open the file browser,
CTRL-L, then paste it.

It would be nice to able to right click after highlighting the path,
then have an option called open. It would call the file browser or
whatever can be used to read the file. That would be a big time saver.

[Bug 666200] [NEW] Unbootable computer is Ubiquity crashes after grub install?

2010-10-25 Thread François Tissandier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

I helped someone who wanted to dual boot his EeePC with Windows 7.
The netbook froze during the installation. No way to install Ubuntu, there
seems to be a hardware compatibility problem.

Anyway, the reason for this failure is not the problem here.

It seems (but I'm not sure, please correct me) that grub is installed before
the system is copied in the partitions ?
So as the installation failed, the computer was unusable after reboot. I guess
the MBR was pointing to the partition where Grub was supposed to be, but as the
installation failed, it was pointing on nothing...

From what I remember, it used to be the opposite before: create the
partitions, copy the files, THEN install grub. This way, if the
installation fails, the computer would still boot on the other operating
system.

No need to explain that for this ex-new Ubuntu user, it's not a pleasant
experience... Maybe i'm wrong and what happened is totally unrelated,
but if that's really the case, it's a bit too risky... If I was not here
to assist him, he would have brought the computer back to the computer
shop to have it fixed. Surely not a great advertisement for Ubuntu to
mess a computer like that.

Just to add some comments, as I helped Gunnar with this problem:

[Bug 652845] Re: Always show 0 for the number of messages in Empathy

2010-10-08 Thread François Tissandier
°_° silly me
I thought the m was messages ! Since the evo counter is for the quantity, I
thought the same for Empathy... Despite the additional m to make the
difference.

Could I make a suggestion then? Is the m really the standard for a
duration ? It confused me. If you check the unit conventions, I think
m is used mainly for meters. For minutes, it seems to be min, or I
think a quote would be fine too:

Name 5 min
or
Name 5'

Not a big deal, but I'm already an exemple of a confused user :)

[Bug 653658] Re: A full / doesn't let the user log in

2010-10-04 Thread François Tissandier
Sebastien, I understand very well that this is a duplicate, I knew it
before submitting this request. But if the duplicated bug you are
talking about is the one I saw:

-it's marked as fixed and wishlist in Launchpad
-it's still open on Gnome bug tracker, and nobody worked on it for months, if
not years

No need to say that nobody will work on this.
I'm still surprised to see it's considered as wishlist. I know it's not a
very common problem as most users won't fill their partition, but it still
happens (that's what happened to my friend, otherwise I would never have
reported it). I'm not arguing about the fact that my request is a duplicate,
just that the importance sounds very wrong to me. Ubuntu is supposed to just
work, and I'm having a hard time to say that to someone who had her computer
completely useless without my help :)

[Bug 653658] [NEW] A full / doesn't let the user log in

2010-10-02 Thread François Tissandier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

Is the / partition is full, it's impossible to log in, and to solve the
problem.

Someone who knows how to use the command line will maybe be able to
solve the problem (providing he knows what's going on!), but other users
are left with no info, and no way to solve it. It's a blocker problem to
me, as the user cannot use its computer anymore.

There is another bug report similar to this one, but it's related to an
upstream bug report nobody is working on... Plus the status is
wishlist, just like if it was a minor problem when a user cannot use
his computer anymore.

I'm also reporting this because the problem happened to a friend who
knows nothing about how Ubuntu is working. Until now, she was very happy
about Ubuntu: working quickly, letting her connect her iPhone and upload
music on it without a problem, managing photos easily. She had to call
me because her computer is broken. This problem left her without any
idea of what was the problem and how to solve it. Very very bad
advertisement for Ubuntu in my opinion.

[Bug 649610] [NEW] Impossible to sort the email accounts

2010-09-28 Thread François Tissandier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Currently, the only way you can sort your email accounts is
alphabetically. And the local folder is always on top, and the search
folders always at the bottom. So it's a bit frustrating, as the local
folder is used less and less I think, most people have some IMAP
folders. A simple dragdrop to rearrange the accounts would be a very
nice addition.

[Bug 533558] Re: Computer Janitor doesn't describe what it does

2010-08-02 Thread François Tissandier
I'm using version 2.0.1 on Maverick, and it does not seem solved to me:

The only button says Do selected tasks.
Which tasks? There are two columns, Packages Other. What should the user
understand ? What will this button do with those two lists? There is absolutely
no mention of any task here.

There should be a main title explaining what are those two lists and the
button should have a clearer meaning.

Something like :

List of packages files to remove
with a complementary info like : please review these items and uncheck the
ones you want to keep.

and Remove these items

That should be a lot clearer for the user. Currently, I don't see a newbie
pressing the button, as he doesn't know what will happen.

[Bug 612445] [NEW] Replace tsclient by a secured software

2010-08-02 Thread François Tissandier
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

Binary package hint: tsclient

TSclient is still saving the RDP passwords in a text file, without any
encryption. This is a major security risk. I'm currently using Remmina,
but I don't want to advise any specific software, as there are several
alternatives to this software. It should just encrypt the saved
passwords, or use Seahorse.

Also, the TSclient version currently used in Ubuntu is two years old.
It's now lacking some nice features available in other softwares (like
tab browsing, image scaling...).

I think it would make sense to consider other candidates, at least until
this security problem is fixed. I'm a network administrator, I really
can't accept to save all my Windows servers password like that on my
hard drive.

[Bug 559888] Re: Lucid installation bug: blank screen

2010-05-06 Thread François Tissandier
Some more tests:
-installed Lucid using Clonezilla (a simple copy from a virtualized Lucid):
blank screen
-booted in recovery mode, then started failsafe graphic mode: fail too, VESA no
valid mode, no screens found...

So it's not just an installation problem, even with an installed system,
it's unusable.

I think this bug is critical, it makes Lucid totally unusable (unless
the alternate CD is working? But as my installed system doesn't display
anything, I don't think it would solve anything if you cannot use a
system you just installed) on this series of Dell laptop.

[Bug 495103] [NEW] Can't print with missing fonts

2009-12-10 Thread François Tissandier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

Evince seems to print PDF using non-installed (and non included) fonts,
but in fact, it's printing nothing. The printer even reacts and seems to
warm up, but then... nothing. Just like if it was receiving an empty
document. And on the computer, it reports the print as fine.

The only way to print PDF is to actually print the PDF document in a PDF
file, and then print this new file. The newly created PDF file has new
included fonts to replace the missing ones. So it's printing without any
problem.

What should happen:

-Evince should at least warn the user that it cannot print the document without
having the fonts. It should NOT send an empty document to the printer and let
the user think everything is all right.
OR
-Evince should warn the user (the fonts used in this document are not
installed on this computer nor included in the document, so they are replaced
by a default font which may look different, something like that) and replace
the missing fonts with default ones, and then print.

[Bug 247364] Re: Some emails are not displayed but are saved in the mailbox file

2009-04-22 Thread François Tissandier
My 2 cents on this pb:

-I noticed it maybe one or two weeks ago, but of course I can't be sure it did
not happened before
-was on Intrepid, I'm on Jaunty now
-connected by IMAP to an Alt-N Mdaemon server

-wrong number of emails, only 180 when in fact I had 1800 (total
confirmed simply by displaying the properties of the Inbox...)

-I tried to delete my evolution configuration files, reconfigure the
imap account, same problem

-I tried to unsubscribe from the Inbox, then subscribe again, sometimes
it was giving me the emails back, but only during a few seconds.
Sometimes no difference. What I noticed was that they were disappearing
AFTER a filtering (you can see it in the status bar at the bottom of
Evolution when it's filtering)

-I didn't configure the spam filter for this IMAP account, but I had
some filters, so I deactivated the filters, no change. However, each
time I tried to unsubscribe /subscribe, it was STILL filtering. I didn't
really understand why, no spam filter, no mail filters set for this imap
account.

-then I discovered this: in the general options (NOT the account
specific ones), the spam filter was activated! I deactivated it, and
since, I don't see any filtering anymore when I unsubscribe/subscribe or
just receive emails. And I see ALL my emails... minus 1! 1885 displayed,
properties window says 1886... But that's a big improvement to me
already. And it makes Evolution faster, as it's not filtering for spams
anymore.

Can someone check her/his own settings and see if it's related to this
spam setting?

[Bug 310978] [NEW] Import of a CD should open the songs in the library

2008-12-23 Thread François Tissandier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

This is not a bug, but a potential improvement.

The import of a CD is working fine, but it could be even better:

-instead of having to right click on the CD, why not allow to just
click, hold, move the CD on the library, and release? The meaning is
quite obvious, copy this CD into my library. Just on click, even
faster.

-when the import is finished, I didn't see anything telling me that it's
done. Instead of showing a simple message saying import finished, I
think it would make sense to just open the songs from the library, ready
to play. It would show that the album is imported, and allow the person
to do what he probably wanted to do from the beginning, listen to the CD
from a copy in his library.

-once the import is finished, I think it would also make sense to look
for the cover immediately too. Why wait until the user open the songs?

Those are of course non critical improvements, but I don't think they
are very complicated technically speaking, and they would just make the
experience smoother.
