[Bug 1287621] [NEW] Java Swing Application windows with corrupt bottom area

2014-03-04 Thread Gerhard Radatz
Public bug reported:

Java Swing application windows tend to have some corrupt area at the bottom
when running under compiz.
This problem is similiar to the one reported in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/archlinux/+source/compiz/+bug/1138517 .
Unfortunately, the fix made for this bug solves the problem only for popup
dialog windows. It is still present for main application windows (and also for
splash images, which do not have window decorations).

The problem does not happen everytime, but quite often enough.

Please see a screenshot of IntelliJ IDEA showing it (the bottom area is
corrupted, thus not displaying important information to the user).
This is NOT a problem related to IntelliJ, as it happens with other swing
applications as well.

Workaround: Closing and re-opening the application helps (sometimes, it
must be closed and re-opened several times).

Ryan, I have tested your new PPA2 under saucy. It fixes the Fat Fonts problem
for me and doesn't seem to introduce any new bugs so far...
Thanks for the great work!

Since I've upgrade my system to this release, I have this fat fonts regression

Could you provide a PPA for saucy, too?

[Bug 1138517] Re: Latest compiz update breaks Java Swing decorations

2013-06-30 Thread Gerhard Radatz
Thanks! I installed 0.9.10 from the PPA.

Unfortunately, this does NOT fix the bug for me! (see screenshot: a dialog from
IntelliJ IDEA)
I use IntelliJ a lot, and the problem frequently appears with dialog windows
(note: sometimes they are displayed correctly, sometimes the are not).
While it is possible to use window controls in distorted dialogs, the bottom
part of the window is not rendered correctly.
Also, dialogs are shifting down per title-bar height as they are closed and
reopened several times.

Thanks to the comments above stating that the problem appeared after
installing wine, I could track down the problem: It is caused by the
package fonts-unfonts-core, which is installed together with wine.

sudo apt-get remove fonts-unfonts-core

Solves the issue (at least if you don't need korean fonts, which are
contained within it).

[Bug 998805] Re: Wireless not connecting on bootup in 12.04 (Intel Wifi Link 5100)

2012-05-25 Thread Gerhard Radatz
The problem is, that sometimes after booting Ubuntu, the wireless connection is
not operational (e.g. ping in a console window shows nothing), although the
network manager icons shows that connection is established.
It is more likely (almost 100%) to happen if the machine hasn't been used for
several days (which suggests to me it has something to do with obtaining dhcp
leases).

Since the situation does not always happen, I had some trouble to figure out
how to exactly reproduce the problem:
And even with the steps below, sometimes the wifi will work from the beginning
as expected.

However, steps that increase the chances to reproduce it are:
* boot into ubuntu.
* turn off wifi with the rfkill switch
* sudo rm /var/lib/dhcp/dhclient*
* reboot the system. At the GRUB screen, turn on the rfkill switch again, so
that wifi is enabled at boot time
* log into ubuntu. network manager will show a wifi connected icon (which is
not the whole truth).
* open up a console window and type ping www.ubuntu.com. Nothing will be
shown on the console

Steps to get wifi operational if it does not work after bootup:
* turn off rfkill switch. Wait until network manager popped up a message saying
wifi disconnected
* turn it on again

Alternative:
* boot with wifi disabled by the rfkill switch
* turn it on only *after* having logged in to your session

Notes:
* deleting the dhcp lease seams to be essential to reproduce the fault (well,
almost always). If the system boots up and can re-use the current lease, wifi
will work properly from the start.

The attached syslog contains several boot cycles. In some of them (e.g.
the first one) the wifi did not initialize properly, in some others
(e.g. the last one) it did.

I will also try to install a mainline kernel and report back then.

[Bug 991713] Re: [8086:4232] Wireless not connecting in 12.04 Intel Wifi Link 5100

2012-05-13 Thread Gerhard Radatz
I have the same bug on a Dell Vostro 1520 with Intel Wifi Link 5100 adapter.
Wireless did show up as being connected after login, but in fact
communication did not work.
Turning it off and on again using the hardware switch was a possible workaround.

I can confirm that the workaround in the problem description (disabling
N mode) makes wifi work right from the beginning.

[Bug 878934] Re: Menu selection is wrong in Java apps

2012-02-03 Thread Gerhard Radatz
I would like to emphasize that the fix above also solves a problem with wine
applications:
Popups/popdowns have been misplaced, which was a new bug in oneiric. (Most
often they popped up in the upper left edge of the screen).
This also works right now with the fix from oneiric-poposed applied.

I can confirm now that the fix works correctly.
The remaining problem I mentioned above is induced by some wrong calculations

I have just checked it with my own application. It looks much better now, but
there is still a problem if the popup is to open near the bottom or right edge

[Bug 921289] [NEW] Closing Maximized Java Window does not refresh screen properly

2012-01-24 Thread Gerhard Radatz
Public bug reported:

When closing a java (swing) application window which is in maximized
state, the screen contents are not properly refreshed (that is,
background or underlying windows are not redrawn correctly): Only the
portion of the screen which would have been occupied if the java window
would have been non-maximized is redrawn correctly; the surrounding area
is not.

This problem does not appear if the window is closed in non-maximized
state.

This problem does not appear with Unity-2D, that's why I think it is

With Unity-3D, it happens with java-6-oracle, java-7-oracle,
java-7-openjdk as well.

Omer, with oneiric-proposed enabled there is currently no newer version

[Bug 878934] Re: Menu selection is wrong in Java apps

2012-01-05 Thread Gerhard Radatz
I have this same bug and would like to provide this additional
information to track down the problem:

-) It did not happen with Ubuntu 11.04 Natty
-) It DOES happen with Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric, even with the same jvm (oracle 1.6)

-) It happens only if the Frame starts up in maximized mode, but not if the
frame starts in non-maximized mode.
-) If you toggle maximized state of the frame off, the offset problem will
disappear. Toggling it back on will not make it appear again.
-) To me it seems that the vertical offset is exactly the height of the global
menu / window title bar.
-) I currently have my Unity Launcher set to hide never. This causes popup
elements of a java application to be horizontally misplaced: They are shifted
to the left by width(launcher) pixels. This horizontal misplacement also is
fixed as soon as the maximized state of the frame is changed for the first time.

So, there seems to be some window initialization issue here.

[Bug 796720] [NEW] suspend to RAM fails, leaving machine in zombie state

2011-06-13 Thread Gerhard Radatz
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pm-utils

Suspending the machine fails if I am logged into the X session (unity).
the pm-suspend.log says success to every suspend step, but then the
machine goes into some zombie state: display goes dark, sound driver
switches off, but the fan keeps running and the system is totally
unresponsible. The only way to wake it up then is to press and hold the
power button until it does a hard power down. (Which means file system
check after the reboot...). This is 100% reproducible.

BUT: If I don't login to the X session, but instead log into a virtual
console (Ctrl-Alt-F1) and call /usr/sbin/pm-suspend from there, the
system suspends correctly and awakes from suspend as it should. This is
also 100% reproducible!

So I suspect this has something to do with a user application inhibiting
proper suspend. Any ideas that could help tracking down the problem?

added some logs, maybe they are helpful.
Note that in syslog at some point the clock changes to Feb-20. Apparently,
during the failed suspend procedure the clock was changed to Feb-20-2044.
It changed back to the correct time via NTP (Mo, 13-Jun-2011) after rebooting.

[Bug 796720] Re: suspend to RAM fails, leaving machine in zombie state

2011-06-13 Thread Gerhard Radatz
I should also note that Suspend to RAM used to work for some time after
upgrading to Natty. (I had the same problems before, that's why in fact
I never used it with Maverick and older Ubuntu releases).

I recently plugged in a Metrologic Laser Scanner (USB) and replaced the
broken Dell mouse (wired USB) with a Logitech mouse (wireless, USB radio
plug). However, since suspend works from the console with these two
devices active, I don't think they are the root of my problems.

[Bug 790144] [NEW] address bar popup, bookmarks toolbar popup broken under certain conditions

2011-05-30 Thread Gerhard Radatz
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

Steps to produce the problem (mostly, unfortunately not every time):
switch to another workspace in Unity (Ctrl-Alt left/right/up/down), then switch
back to the workspace where firefox is, press Ctrl-T to open a new tab and type
in the address bar.
No popup will be shown. Also if you have bookmarks in the bookmark toolbar, the
popups will not open.

This also is likely to happen if the screensaver was active before.
Pressing Alt-Tab to push the window in the background and back to foreground
again makes the popup work.

[Bug 775726] Re: Slow boot which might be ureadahead

2011-05-27 Thread Gerhard Radatz
I have the same problem - the boot time has almost doubled, and a similiar jump
from 4.71 to 21.15
But I still have ext3 file systems.
There are other big time gaps, too: from 22.38 to 32.53, and from 37.72 to
48.38 (I suspect the last one to be a different problem, though).

See attached dmesg.

Any ideas?

[Bug 439448] Re: Visual corruption affecting several panel applets

2010-10-25 Thread Gerhard Radatz
Christopher:
I just did a fresh install of Maverick on a separate partition of my laptop.
The first login showed the panel without errors. Then I installed the recent
upgrades (which should have been installed by the installation procedure
already. Somehow they weren't, but that's another bug...) and activated the
nvidia graphics driver as suggested by the system. After the reboot I had a
corrupted panel again, as I am used to.

So, I can confirm this bug has nothing todo with upgrading :-(

[Bug 593258] Re: calendar applet and user switch / logout applet are frequently cutoff and unusable

2010-06-14 Thread Gerhard Radatz
Sorry, Sebastien, I do not want to be impolite, but I would not have
filed this bug if I had found a similiar one on launchpad already. So if
you mark this bug as invalid because it already is reported elsewhere, I
think it is also part of your job to file the duplicate's number here.

I searched for keywords as user switch applet or calendar applet and
had no success. That said, I also do not want to spend my days on
reporting such evident and annoying bugs if I do know that they are
already reported.

[Bug 593258] Re: calendar applet and user switch / logout applet are frequently cutoff and unusable

2010-06-14 Thread Gerhard Radatz
Ok, Sebastien, I think we both face the same problem: We cannot find the
right bug report for the given bug in a suitable amount of time. You
know that there is one (otherwise you wouldn't have closed the bug, I
guess) while I did not.

I accept that the bug is already tracked *somewhere* else, but I think
finding an existing bug should somehow be improved then. Hoping for
better times to come...

[Bug 593258] [NEW] calendar applet and user switch / logout applet are frequently cutoff and unusable

2010-06-13 Thread Gerhard Radatz
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

On my desktop, the calendar applet and/or the user switch/logout applet
very often display only half of their widget area. For the calendar
applet, this means that the time information is missing. For the user
switch applet, this means that there is no logout button.

In previous versions of Ubuntu, I also had problems with the panel:
Frequently (but not always) the top and bottom panel were reverted after
logging in. I had to call gnome-panel --replace in a console to reload
the panel. This always fixed the issue.

In Karmic there seems to be a patch for the reverted panels, because
sometimes when logging in I can observe that the top and bottom panels
are exchanged, but after a few seconds they automatically rearrange
themselves to be on the right place again.

gnome-panel --replace also fixes the cutoff applets. However, this
is a new and very annoying bug, which is one of the sort which prevents
non-power-users from using Ubuntu. How should I tell my friends
Ubuntu is great, but occasionally you will not have an opportunity to
logout anymore???

See the screenshot attached.
Additional infos: I have the nvidia graphics driver and compiz running.

Please let me know if I can provide some further information for
tracking down this problem.

[Bug 474834] Re: Booting Dell Vostro 1520 shows message mmc0: unknown controller version(2). You may experience problems

2010-04-24 Thread Gerhard Radatz
Hello Jeremy,
I tested with kernel version 2.6.34-999 as described in the link you mentioned.
Although I ran into some other problems because the nvidia driver could not be
built during the kernel package install, by reading the kernel log file I could
verify that the bug is still present. (See log file attached.)
I also booted again with my current Ubuntu-fied kernel, which is 2.6.31-19
(also contained in the log).

[Bug 283128] Re: Keyboard indicator shows additional layout null

2010-01-23 Thread Gerhard Radatz
There was a recent update to the xserver-core package, which made the
problem reappear (because it overrides the patched version paulus
provided). I recollected all info from the posts above on how to apply
the patch to the latest src and build the package yourself. These are
the steps you have to run:

First, 'cd' to a directory where you can safely download the source.
Then

mkdir xserver-xorg-core-src-karmic
cd xserver-xorg-core-src-karmic
apt-src install xserver-xorg-core
wget http://launchpadlibrarian.net/33566768/xserver-xorg-1.6.4.diff
cd xorg-server-1.6.4/xkb
patch -p1 ../../xserver-xorg-1.6.4.diff
cd ../..
sudo dpkg -i xserver-xorg-core_1.6.4-2ubuntu4.1_amd64.deb

Have fun!

[Bug 368553] Re: [jaunty] [TYPO in script - missing quote] line 81: unexpected EOF while looking for matching `' /usr/lib/hal/scripts/linux/hal-system-killswitch-get-power-linux: line 84: syntax erro

2009-06-22 Thread Gerhard Radatz
Hello Martin,

the problem seems to be as follows: after your corrections the script
finally works. Before, it always yielded an exit code != 0, because of
the syntax errors.

Now, I tracked down the problem by printing more logs. It turns out,
that

hal-system-smbios --st_wlan

always yields 1 as the result, regardless of the position of the
rfkill switch. Thus, the script always exits with 0, which apparently is
wrong.

2009-06-20 Thread Gerhard Radatz
Martin:

After installing this latest patch, my WiFi STOPPED working, saying something
like
iwlagn: rfkill switch must be turned off in dmesg (alltough the rfkill switch
definitely is ON)

I am sorry but cannot reproduce the correct message, since I reinstalled the
whole system from scratch and applied all the available updates one by one in
order to isolate the problem. My situation is as follows:
I installed Ubuntu Jaunty (64bit) from the live cd on a brand new Dell Vostro
1520.
Everything worked fine, including WiFi. Then I applied all available updates,
and after rebooting, the wireless access did not work anymore.

So I decided to reinstall the system again and applying updates one by one. Now
I have applied all of them (with wifi still working), except the following:
hal
libhal-storage1
libhal1

The currently installed version is 0.5.12~rc1+git20090403-0ubuntu1, the
updated version would be 0.5.12~rc1+git20090403-0ubuntu3 for those 3
packages. If you can you point me to the source repository or to a
description of the changes made, I could try to fix the problem and
tell you what was wrong with the update.

One final question: is there any possibility to revert back from an
updated package to an earlier version?

[Bug 383848] [NEW] Acrobat Reader (firefox plugin) hangs when closing document

2009-06-05 Thread Gerhard Radatz
Public bug reported:

When I am displaying a pdf document via the firefox acroread plugin and
then close the documents' tab, the cpu goes to 100%, sharing usage
between the two processes:

/lib/ld-linux.so.2
/usr/lib32/Adobe/Reader8/Reader/intellinux/bin/acroread --display :0.0
-progressPipe 3 -exitPipe 4

and

/usr/X11R6/bin/X :0 -br -audit 0 -auth /var/lib/gdm/:0.Xauth -nolisten
tcp vt7

If I kill the acroread-process, the X-process will also stop to consume
CPU time, but to view a pdf document in firefox again, I will have to
restart the browser.

System configuration is: Jaunty 64Bit, acroread packages were installed

[Bug 283128] Re: Keyboard indicator shows additional layout null

2009-05-29 Thread Gerhard Radatz
Thomas, I tried your patch
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xkeyboard-config/+bug/283128/comments/37)
with my recent jaunty installation. Since I have a 64-Bit installation, I had
to compile the package myself following your directions, but everything worked
fine.

I can confirm that this bug now disappeared, but still there is this
other issue (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/286158), where
opening windows switches the keyboard layout which is really annoying.
This also happens very often when, for example, IntelliJ opens a
subwindow, so the layout switches unexpectedly, thus causing erroneous
inputs very often. Do you have an idea how this could be fixed?

[Bug 230931] Re: Screensaver causes display freeze

2008-12-18 Thread Gerhard Radatz
I have a similiar issue with my PC and Intrepid installed.
Occasionally the system freezes, when the screensaver is active and I press a
keyboard key to get the password dialog. I am using the Matrix screensaver on
this machine, and the graphics chip onboard is Intels 82915G Integrated
Graphics Controller.

I have to login via ssh from another machine then and reboot (tried to
kill X, but when it restarted, the mouse was still frozen).

I would not consider this being a low priority bug; if it appears and
I have to reboot and loose all my running apps only because of a faulty
screensaver, this is somewhat more than low...

[Bug 283128] Re: Keyboard indicator shows additional layout null

2008-11-22 Thread Gerhard Radatz
Thomas, just to clarify: Do you have auto login enabled on your system?
Your bug description is rather different from mine, and the discussion
in bugzilla which you mentioned indicates that your problem could have
to do with autologin.

For me, the indicator works well for some time. It definitely does NOT
add the ?? layout immediately when pressing the first key, as you
wrote. I did not yet find out the condition when it adds this false
layout. And, I do NOT have autologin.

So, possible you have yet another bug then we have here.

[Bug 298695] [NEW] resume from suspend throws ata exception and results in mouse pointer on black screen

2008-11-16 Thread Gerhard Radatz
Public bug reported:

I am working on desktop machine with Nvidia Quadro FX4600 graphics card
and two internal hard disks. Normally, resume after suspend will work.

But sometimes I can see the following error messages when waking up the system
again:
ata2: exception Emask 0x10 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x9 t4

(I am not sure if this is really the text displayed on the console; but
I found this text in the syslog and it says the same thing. the text on
the console disappears very fast)

Then the system switches to a black screen with only the mouse pointer
visible and completely locks up. I can move the mouse, but cannot do
anything else. I have to hard power off the system then and reboot.

[Bug 286158] Re: keyboard layout falls back to default when opening file manager or file dialog

2008-11-11 Thread Gerhard Radatz
Based on the discussion at http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=555261
it seems to me that the problem is slightly different:
I have two keyboard layouts. The first one is USA, the second one is Germany
dead grave acute. The German layout is marked as default in the table, but
since I do not use the separate layout for each window, it turns out that
this setting is not used at all, but instead the first layout in the table
would be the global default. So, the default should be US in my case.

BUT: If I open a new window as described above, the kbd layout always
switches to GERMAN. So to me it looks, like the settings for separate
layout for each window are somehow applied to the new window, although
I do not want this behaviour.

Anyway, it is very annoying :-(

[Bug 295118] [NEW] windows wobbling permanently when leaking into adjacent workspace

2008-11-07 Thread Gerhard Radatz
Public bug reported:

With wobbly windows enabled, if I move a window to a new position so
that it is partially visible on an adjacent workspace (left or right),
the window will wobble permanently after I finished moving.

E.g. if the window is shifted to the left, so that the left border of
the window will not be on the active workspace anymore, AND the top
border of the window is on top of the workspace (right below the top
panel), the top left corner of the window will start to bounce and never
stop.

[Bug 290339] Re: Window List sometimes mixes up windows from different workspaces

2008-11-06 Thread Gerhard Radatz
Regarding my examples 1 3 in the bug description, I have to make a
correction based on further observation:

It seems that this is not a bug, but only an irritating behaviour:
Sometimes if I open an app which was maximized when I last closed it,
and the app did not remember the maximized state but the position and
size of the window, the new window will be slightly misplaced.
Therefore, it could leak a few pixels into the next or previous
workspace, which may or may not clearly visible. Since the window then
is partially on this other workspace, too, its icon is displayed
correctly in the window list.

So, this is NOT a bug (and my description was wrong, because it can be
seen on DEmaximized windows which just happen to be nearly as large as
if they were maximized).

However, the 2nd example, which is also what Andreas reported, is
independent from the other ones. During the last few days, this effect
did not reappear, however.

[Bug 286158] Re: keyboard layout falls back to default when opening file manager or file dialog

2008-10-20 Thread Gerhard Radatz
I realized it also switches back to the default when I start a terminal
window.

[Bug 286158] [NEW] keyboard layout falls back to default when opening file manager or file dialog

2008-10-19 Thread Gerhard Radatz
Public bug reported:

On Ubuntu intrepid (development branch), I have defined two alternate
keyboard layouts: Germany dead grave acute and English, with the
german layout as default.

Layout switching is set to both shift keys together change layout,
separate layout for each window is NOT selected.

When switching between different windows, everything works fine (which
means: the layout keeps the same whichever I selected before), but when
creating a new file manager window (e.g. choosing Places-Home Folder)
the keyboard layout falls back to the german setting. The same applies
if I choose some sort of file-open menu in an application which
creates a file dialog.

Further playing around with an already open file manager window does not
change settings again, so it seems that it happens on creation of the
window only.

[Bug 246269] Re: Switched from vesafb to uvesafb, but uvesafb can't work without v86d

2008-10-09 Thread Gerhard Radatz
I am afraid that captn's solution did not fully work for me:

The situation is not as bad as before (computer now boots without
beeping and stripes, and I can use the X desktop now without problems),
but:

-) The text on the console window is displaced about 1/2 of the screen width to
the right and about 1/3 of the screen height to the bottom.
-) When I see the gnome login screen, switching to the console by pressing
Ctrl-Alt-F1 only works once. When switching back to the X screen (Ctrl-Alt-F7)
I again see the login screen, but: pressing Ctrl-Alt-F1 again fails. My screen
turns black and switches off after a while, which apparently means there is no
valid input signal anymore. (Ctrl-Alt-F7 again restores the X-screen, then).

Any ideas? I tried several resolution settings in the uvesafb config file, but
none worked.
I am using an nvidia Quadro FX 4600 card, the native resolution of the monitor
is 1280*1024 pixels.

[Bug 144189] Re: IBM T23 failed to hibernate

2008-06-05 Thread Gerhard Radatz
I have the same problem on my Acer TravelMate 4601LMi laptop, running
Ubuntu 8.04 with kernel 2.6.24.18 (also with some older kernel versions
of this release):

When I hibernate the computer, right after hibernation it reboots so I
have to turn it off manually by pressing the power button a long time.
After booting up with linux the next time, it says failed to hibernate
(which is a correct diagnosis for this situation)

[Bug 85370] Re: amd64: Random system hangs and mouse issues with 6.10 (cpufreq related?)

2008-01-16 Thread Gerhard Radatz
Hello, I had an issue with very long blocking time after the kernel
alive message, before the system continued to boot with my amd64
kubuntu 7.10 installation, running on an Intel Core2 Extreme CPU Q6850
inside a VMware workstation 6.0.2 virtual machine.

I tried to install the updated kernel (2.6.24-4-generic by now) as was
described by Leann Ogasawara in his post earlier in this thread on
2007-12-04, and this works fine - no more delays!

Thanks a lot

[Bug 74485] Sometimes after booting, the network interface isn't up

2006-12-05 Thread Gerhard Radatz
Public bug reported:

Sometimes after booting, the network interface did not come up. I have
to fix it manually then, issuing the command

/etc/init.d/networking restart

This brings the interface up, but also issues warning messages which perhaps
may help you in tracking the problem:
This bug did not occur on Ubuntu 6.06, it started to appear when I upgraded to
6.10

2006-11-29 Thread Gerhard Radatz
I think with suspending you mean what is presented as hibernate
computer in the Kubuntu log-out menu?

In the past, this never worked correctly. I retried it now and during suspend,
there came the following error message:
some error codes pnp: Failed to activate device 00:0e

However, resuming the computer did work then.

and thereby I ran mkswap.

[Bug 72016] Re: Upgrading from 6.06 to 6.10 -- misconfigured swap partition entry in fstab

2006-11-26 Thread Gerhard Radatz
Thanks, I tried it and it worked.

However, do you have any idea why they are using UUIDs now? Before, I
changed my /etc/fstab back to directly referencing my /dev/hda9 swap
partition (as it was before Ubuntu 6.10) and this worked well, too

So they introduced another source of problems, as it seems.

[Bug 72016] Upgrading from 6.06 to 6.10 -- misconfigured swap partition entry in fstab

2006-11-16 Thread Gerhard Radatz
Public bug reported:

I upgraded from Kubuntu 6.06 to 6.10 folling the procedure given at
http://kubuntu.org/announcements/6.10-release.php

Then I found that everytime I am booting the swap is inactive. However,
the boot log erroneously says enabling swap - ok.

I finally found out that there is a wrong entry in my /etc/fstab (given
below)

# /etc/fstab: static file system information.

the line below /dev/hda9 is the swap partition. However, if I run

What's the problem here?
