[Bug 41624] Re: Replaying journals of other OS's filesystems, by mounting them, is unsafe

2023-10-04 Thread Glenn Washburn
Over a decade later... but this might help someone. There is a way
around this mess, with some caveats. You can set the block device to
readonly using blockdev. This works as desired a lot of the time.
However, sometimes (or perhaps everytime certain filesystems need to
replay the journal), the will cause the kernel to refuse to mount the
filesystem. The way around this is to, as mentioned above, replay the
journal to ram. As far as I know, no filesystems support this natively.
What can be done is to use dm-snapshot to create a snapshot of the block
device with the cow file residing on a tmpfs. Then mount the snapshot
device's filesystem as readonly. In this case the log will be replayed
to ram.

The caveat here is that, when in this state, the underlying block device
should not be written to. So effectively the block device is locked up
until the snapshot device is removed. A scenario where this might be an
issue is as follows. You have a harddrive with isos on an ext4
filesystem that you use to grub iso loopback mount to boot from. When
booting one of the isos, you use the snapshot setup with this filesystem
because you don't know if its part of a hibernation image or not. When
the livecd is up and running, you will not be able to modify the
filesystem (you can write to it, but all changes are in ram and will be
lost). That's as it should be if the filesystem is part of a hibernation
image, but it might be more likely that its not. And in that case, it
might be confusing why this restriction exists.

What would be good is to have code that can detect if the system has a
hibernation image or even better if the filesystem was mounted while a
hibernation happened (not sure if that's possible). Then the snapshot
work around could be done only when needed.

Since Lubuntu 20.04 is the new LTS, which no longer supports 32-bit

remember correctly, Lubuntu 18.04 utilized pcmanfm.

[Bug 1938104] Re: shiftfs module is not built because CONFIG_SHIFT_FS is not set

2021-12-03 Thread Glenn Washburn
Why is this invalid? I presume because there's the idmapped mounts
feature. The problem is that this doesn't work in 5.13 when BTRFS is the
underlying filesystem. So shiftfs is still useful. Its turned on in
master build[1], why not for OEM, which is the only 5.13 available for
focal?

Here's a discussion suggesting that idmapped mounts for BTRFS won't be
available till 5.15[2]

[Bug 1943176] Re: Cannot mount 3.5 format made from mkreiserfs

2021-09-09 Thread Glenn Washburn
Looks like the "-q" option also silences errors (wth?). Without "-q"
option mkfs.reiserfs fails complaining that test.reiser_old.img is not a
block device.

Running the following, also errors:
LOOPDEV=$(losetup --show -f test.reiser_old.img)
mkfs.reiserfs --format=3.5 -b 512 -l 'g;/éт 鍊' "$LOOPDEV"

Outputting this message: "Block sizes smaller than 4k are not
supported."

This contradicts the manpage, which says that block sizes may be between
512 and 8192. But this explains why the mount is having issues.

[Bug 1943176] [NEW] Cannot mount 3.5 format made from mkreiserfs

2021-09-09 Thread Glenn Washburn
Public bug reported:

The following commands on Ubuntu Impish live cd reproduce the issue:

truncate -s 256M test.reiser_old.img
mkfs.reiserfs --format=3.5 -b 512 -l 'g;/éт 鍊' -q test.reiser_old.img
sudo mount -t reiserfs test.reiser_old.img /media/tmp2

[Bug 1876990] Re: zfs modules in Focal kernel taint kernel

2021-09-01 Thread Glenn Washburn
I'm running into this as well. I'd like to boot the Live CD such that
the kernel is untainted, but since the zfs modules are automatically
loaded, the kernel is tainted at boot.

I was able to ensure that the zfs modules were not loaded at boot by
adding the kernel parameter "systemd.mask=zfs.target" in the grub
bootloader.

I don't think there's a "fix" for this issue, but maybe this will help
someone else running in to this issue.

One thing that would be nice though would be for the kernel parameter
"zfs=(off|no|0)" would disable this target. Just as it disabled module
loading in /etc/initd.d/zfs-import (via /etc/zfs/zfs-functions in
function checksystem).

[Bug 1942260] [NEW] compress firmware in /lib/firmware

2021-08-31 Thread Glenn Washburn
Public bug reported:

Some facts:
 - The linux kernel has supported loading xz compressed firmware since 5.3
 - The size of /lib/firmware in impish is ~650Mb (and growing)
 - The compressed size of firmware could be ~230Mb

It would be nice to install compressed firmware to save space.

Here are the plans from the Fedora project:

[Bug 1938104] [NEW] shiftfs module is not built because CONFIG_SHIFT_FS is not set

2021-07-26 Thread Glenn Washburn
Public bug reported:

Shiftfs is built and included in all other ubuntu kernels that I know of
and if I'm not mistaken is sponsored by ubuntu mostly for use with LXD
containers, which is my use case. It also included in the linux-
oem-5.10. Is there a reason shiftfs is not included in the 5.13 oem

[Bug 1713578] Re: Migrate /etc/resolv.conf from resolvconf to systemd-resolved

2021-06-04 Thread Glenn Burkhardt
On distributions that do not contain resolvconf, no symlink to
/etc/resolv.conf is created during the installation of systemd. There
should be one created.

For example, the stock Lubuntu 20.04 doesn't install resolvconf, and
resolv.conf is not a symlink to any file.

Re: [Bug 1906086] Re: [HP EliteOne 800 G2 23-in Touch AiO] Display is limited to top half of the screen

2021-01-20 Thread Glenn Stewart
You are a star Daniel.

I followed the instructions at #80 under Bug 97822. That is:
Disabled Legacy Mode
Disabled Secure Boot
both options were on the same Advanced BIOS panel.

I then re-booted without success.

So I went with the final bit of the instructions and re-installed Ubuntu.
Success!
I updated the software and re-booted. Still at full screen.

Now all I have to do is get Ubuntu set up again!

edids.bin was still empty.

Regards,
Glenn Stewart

Thanks Daniel.
Yes, this is a touchscreen with B logo.

Now, how do I change the BIOS mode please?

Attached are screenshots of the current HP info re Boot, BIOS, and UEFI.

2021-01-19 Thread Glenn Stewart
Wayland versions done. Again, the edids.bin would not attach as it was
empty.

I have already made various changes to the display under Wayland. All
successful, although only in top half of the screen.

Re: [Bug 1906086] Re: DIsplay is limited to top half of the screen

2021-01-19 Thread Glenn Stewart
Thanks Daniel.

BIOS Update was done under Windows/HP Tools before I installed Ubuntu.

xrandrv.txt is attached. edids.bin would not attach, as it was empty.

I tried various display settings, which all worked, but within the top half
of the screen.

Glenn Stewart

Re: [Bug 1906086] Re: DIsplay is limited to top half of the screen

2021-01-18 Thread Glenn Stewart
Hi Daniel.

I have installed Ubuntu over Win10.
I have enabled Ubuntu on Wayland.
Everything works - LAN/WAN, Audio, Video, WiFi, Bluetooth, Printing, Mail,
software updates, etc.
It's just that it is still squashed up into the top half of the screen.

What else should I be doing please?

[Bug 1909377] [NEW] Ubuntu 20.04.1 installer crashed

2020-12-26 Thread Glenn Stewart
Public bug reported:

Could not create GRUB- this is a fatal error was the gist of the message
displayed.

I was installing Ubuntu from a flash drive.
Installer did not recognise that Win 10 was already installed.

I want to be able to dual boot between Ubuntu and Win 10, as I migrate to

Re: [Bug 1906086] Re: DIsplay is limited to top half of the screen

2020-12-02 Thread Glenn Stewart
I did not want to actually install Ubuntu. I wanted to be able to run it
and see how it has progressed since I last used 12.04 from 2012 till 2016
on 3 x machines that were formerly Win XP.

In summary then, my hardware is suspected to be the issue, and if I want to
progress to see if the Wayland option helps, I have to install Ubuntu.

>From what I have seen so far, I will not proceed with installation.

However, I may have to-visit that decision if I am unable to resolve the
issue in Win 10 - if I have to rebuild Win 10, I may as well clear it all
out and install Ubuntu.

Thank you for your perseverance Daniel.

Regards,
Glenn Stewart

Re: [Bug 1906086] Re: DIsplay is limited to top half of the screen

2020-12-02 Thread Glenn Stewart
Hi Daniel.
I do not have a login screen, so I do not have a password nor do I see any
of the options you have mentioned. See the attached screenshots.
Screenshot 1 shows the options I have. I usually go with 'try Ubuntu' or I
exit installation completely.
Screenshot 2 shows the desktop and the apps option, which is the only extra
thing I can do.

Windows today

Re: [Bug 1906086] Re: DIsplay is limited to top half of the screen

2020-12-01 Thread Glenn Stewart
Hi Daniel.

Here is the screenshot of the start up options. There is no 'Ubuntu on
Wayland' option available to me at start up.
I have tried each option, without success at this point.
Windows is still affected. Hard to show as the bottom half "haze" is very
light today.

[Bug 1906086] Re: DIsplay is limited to top half of the screen

2020-12-01 Thread Glenn Stewart
I have rebooted with the straight Ubuntu option rather than the Safe Graphics
option.

They all make the changes but still only within the top half of the screen.

2020-11-30 Thread Glenn Stewart
Under settings/resolution there is only one option - 1024 x 768 (4:3)

The machine is an HP AIO,Processor = Intel® Core™ i7-6700 CPU @ 3.40GHz
× 8, Memory = 31.2 GiB, Graphics = llvmpipe (LLVM 10.0.0, 256 bits).

Re: [Bug 1906086] Re: DIsplay is limited to top half of the screen

2020-11-29 Thread Glenn Stewart
Thanks Daniel.
I rebooted and used Ubuntu (safe graphics), and all was well.
The resolution only has one option - 1024 x 768.
So problem solved - thank you for your prompt response.

Glenn Stewart

[Bug 1906086] Re: DIsplay is limited to top half of the screen

2020-11-29 Thread Glenn Stewart
Thanks Daniel.
Screenshot attached.
I am back in Win10 right now, which also became affected by the "hazy bottom
half" of the display, although the full screen displayed behind the haze (just
hard to read).

Will need to try booting again from the stick, to see the option for
Wayland.

Cheers
Glenn

[Bug 1872159] Re: Boot animation never finishes when external monitors (or just more than one) are connected

2020-10-10 Thread Glenn Brauen
Ubuntu 20.04 on Lenovo T480s. This problem has appeared only in the last
week. I've been running 20.04 since May and had never seen this problem
before.

Boot hangs on Ubuntu spinning splash with HDMI directly connected for
2nd monitor. Booting without HDMI connected works fine.

- removing "splash quiet" in /etc/grub/default does NOT avoid problem.
- changing /etc/gdm3/custom.conf as in #31 above does NOT avoid the problem.

- switching from gdm3 to either sddm or lightdm avoids the problem.

[Bug 1898911] Re: deja-dup fails due to gpg issue

2020-10-08 Thread Glenn Brumfield
A Google search yielded:

https://askubuntu.com/questions/1057627/duplicity-fails-with-bad-
session-key-error

which basically blamed the error on a gpg upgrade issue. I don't know
how to fix that.

As an experiment I created a new folder (same HDD, same partition, etc.)
to back up to. Backed up using the same passphrase as before, and the
backup occurred successfully. However, that does not mean I would be
able to recover any of the previous backups. Hope that helps.

After repeated attempts to backup, deja-dup now appears to begin backup
successfully, but is unable to verify the backup and repeatedly asks for
the passphrase. When passphrase is entered, the verification fails and
asks for the passphrase again.

[Bug 1898911] [NEW] deja-dup fails due to gpg issue

2020-10-07 Thread Glenn Brumfield
Public bug reported:

Lubuntu 18.04 64-bit with current updates. Backing up to external HDD
via USB 3.0.

When attempting backup, I receive an error message stating:

"Backup Failed
GPGError: GPG Failed, see log below:
= Begin GnuPG log =
gpg: WARNING: "--no-use-agent" is an obsolete option - it has no effect
gpg: AES256 encrypted data
gpg: gcry_kdf_derive failed: Invalid data
gpg: encrypted with 1 passphrase
gpg: decryption failed: No secret key
= End GnuPG log "

Deja Dup package received a recent update, if I recall correctly. Deja
Dup worked correctly up until today.

[Bug 1879806] [NEW] Grub installation fails every time.

2020-05-20 Thread Glenn Meyer
Public bug reported:

Installation attempted on an HP Spectre X360 13 inch (2019) laptop.
Multiple attempts all fail, except for the first one, which seemed to
work until I rebooted: Windows 10 booted as if Ubuntu was never
installed. All attempts fail when grub-install is run, whether the
target is the HDD boot record, the Windows Boot Manager partition, the
Ubuntu partition or even the install USB stick partition. FYI there's no
Legacy Support option in this machine's System Configuration Bios tab
(F10). I wouldn't think that would matter, just saying in case I'm
wrong.

[Bug 1858670] [NEW] Blank DVD shows up twice on desktop

2020-01-07 Thread Glenn Brumfield
Public bug reported:

When a blank DVD is inserted and mounted, it shows up twice on the
desktop. The blank DVD icons initially are named 'Blank CD/DVD' but if
you move the pointer over an icon it will change its name to 'CD/DVD
Creator'. PCManFM displays only one instance of Blank DVD. I would
expect only one icon for each blank DVD to show up on the desktop, not
two icons each. This behavior occurs whether the blank DVD is inserted
either before or after boot-up. I believe this may be a regression from
an earlier similar bug, but have not found the earlier bug. I am using a
Verbatim Inkjet Printable DVD+R, white, hub printable, capacity 4.7 BG,
P/N 94917. Computer is a System76 Serval Pro 7 running Lubuntu 18.04
64-bit wuth current updates.

I forgot to mention there is 1 difference between the two servers.

On 16.04, memcached is version 1.4.25 and on 18.04 it is version 1.5.6.

2019-12-28 Thread Glenn J. Schworak
I have two servers giving the same error.

Ubuntu 16.04 server returns all the keys then throws this error at the
end.

Ubuntu 18.04 server returns all keys some times and skips some other
times.

I ran the test many times on each server. 16.04 is stable in what it
returns but 18.04 changes each time I run memdump. This is also an issue
when running getAllKeys() from php.

All testing demonstrates that the data stored in the cache is working
perfectly. It only seems to be the command to get the keys that is
causing trouble.

[Bug 1853987] [NEW] debug setting does not turn on tracing for scripts called by init

2019-11-26 Thread Glenn Washburn
Public bug reported:

Version: 0.130ubuntu3.9
Severity: normal

When adding "debug" to the kernel commandline debug output is turned on
and is very useful for debugging. However, none of the scripts (eg.
local-premount/resume) recognize the debug variable to turn on tracing
as in init. I simply added the line '[ -n "${debug}" ] && set -x' as the
first line in local-premount/resume and now I get debug logging when the
debug kernel parameter is added. This line should be added to all

- When adding "debug" to the kernel commandline debug output is turned on and is

[Bug 1853982] [NEW] Resume fails when UUID= syntax used in conf.d/resume

2019-11-26 Thread Glenn Washburn
Public bug reported:

I've having this issue on Bionic, but it appears that Focal still has
this issue (and its probably been there for years). This can easily be
reproduced by starting with a system on which hibernation is working
using the resume=UUID=... kernel parameter. Then create the file /etc
/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume with contents RESUME=UUID=... Next
regenerate the initrd and remove the resume= kernel parameter. Now
hibernate the machine and when booted back up resume will fail. This
contradicts expected behavior noted in the documentation.

This is because there is a bug on this line
https://git.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/initramfs-tools/tree/scripts
/local-premount/resume?h=ubuntu/focal#n35. The variable resume is of the
form UUID=..., but of course readlink doesn't understand that. I've
fixed this by inserting the line 'resume=${DEV}' above line 35.

[Bug 1849909] Re: VLC window left edge off of screen, cannot move

2019-10-26 Thread Glenn Brumfield
Thanks for checking, Chris. It now appears that I somehow wound up with a
configuration error: deleting the '~/.config/vlc' folder and reopening VLC
seems to have cured my issue. I'll close this bug; again thank you for your
time. Glenn

[Bug 1849909] [NEW] VLC window left edge off of screen, cannot move

2019-10-25 Thread Glenn Brumfield
Public bug reported:

Lubuntu 18.04 64-bit & current updates, VLC version 3.0.8-0ubuntu18.04.1

Has consistently occurred for quite a while now; I was waiting to see if
a fix was coming out.

Upon opening VLC whether from command-line or menu, the window opens at
the upper-left edge of my screen with the left 1/4-inch of the window
off the left side of the screen. This does not occur with other
applications, or the 32-bit version of VLC in Lubuntu 18.04 on a
different computer.

VLC window that is partiallt off the screen cannot be moved to the right
or down, but can be maximized & minimized.

This may be an issue on Lubuntu only.

Re: [Bug 1816198] Re: when a blank cd is automounted, it appears twice on the desktop

2019-02-16 Thread Glenn Brumfield
Hi Chris, thanks for your interest. First, a family emergency just popped
up that will require all my time for about the next week, so there's that.
Secondly, 'open & re-close' tray function appears to work properly with
pcmanfm; what does not seem to work properly is xfburn writing correctly to
the CD. Using my 32-bit notebook & Lubuntu 18.04.1 + updates, I attempted
to make an audio CD-R with 8 tracks but failed to complete the burns for 2
CD-R's, even thought the audio files are fine playing with VLC from the
HDD. Next, I tried burning the same audio tracks with xfburn to an audio
CD-R on my 64-bit Lubuntu 18.04.1 + updates notebook; this time the CD burn
completed but the audio tracks have a number of 'skips' in the audio. This
may very well be an issue with xfburn, but since the initial indication of
something out of the ordinary is with pcmanfm, I thought it might be some
kind of CD mounting or dependency issue in pcmanfm.

[Bug 1816198] [NEW] when a blank cd is automounted, it appears twice on the desktop

2019-02-15 Thread Glenn Brumfield
Public bug reported:

The icon for the blank cd appears twice on the Lubuntu 18.04 desktop
after cd insertion & automount. Ejecting the cd from pcmanfm removes
both icons from desktop. Apparently erroneous automount seems to
interfere with burning data to the cd with xburn. This bug appears in
both 32-bit and 64-bit variants of Lubuntu 18.04.

I expect to view the icon of only one blank cd per cd/dvd drive on the
Lubuntu desktop.

Re: [Bug 1740921] Re: Nautilus renames partitions on external USB HDD

2019-01-30 Thread Glenn Brumfield
Thank you for your attention to this bug report. It had been so long since
I submitted the report that I upgraded to Lubuntu 18.04.1 in the interim.
Since Lubuntu uses File Manager PCManFS rather than Nautilus, [CODE] gvfs
-li [/CODE] will only return [CODE] gvfs: command not found [/CODE]. Since
this is a production machine, I can't reinstall Ubuntu 16.04 with Unity
just for troubleshooting at this late date. PCManFS has not renamed any of
my external HDD file partitions in 18.04.1; perhaps this was an aberration
caused by the last updates to the end-of-life-for-Unity-based 16.04 OS.
Thank you again for your time.

[Bug 1774632] [NEW] The symbolic link /etc/resolv.conf points to the wrong file by default

2018-06-01 Thread Glenn J. Schworak
Public bug reported:

When using nslookup for local machine names, the local DNS was being
ignored (not queried) and none of the local machines could be found.

After much research and digging, it was discovered that the cause was
the incorrect symbolic link /etc/resolv.conf file.

The default install caused systemd-resolve to configure the link to point to
the stub file:
/etc/resolv.conf -> ../run/systemd/resolve/stub-resolv.conf

Reomving that link and pointing it to the correct file solved the DNS lookup
issue. The correct link looks like this:
/etc/resolv.conf -> /run/systemd/resolve/resolv.conf

Steps used to test the bug before fixing the link is to perform an nslookup on
a local (non FQDN) machine that is in your local DNS (my router is my DNS
server for this case) Here is an example of the incorrect output:

$ nslookup web1

Server: 127.0.0.53
Address:127.0.0.53#53

** server can't find web1: SERVFAIL

Switching the symbolic link solves the problem. Here is my solution:

$ sudo rm -f /etc/resolv.conf
$ sudo ln -s /run/systemd/resolve/resolv.conf /etc/resolv.conf

After switching the symbolic link, the nslookup functions properly.

$ nslookup web1

Server: 192.168.1.1

[Bug 1577575] Re: NFS share does not mount on boot using fstab

2018-05-26 Thread Glenn J. Schworak
I am experiencing the exact same issue with a fresh install of Ubuntu
18.04. Five other machines on the same network with the same NFS mount
are not experiencing the issue. Three are 18.04 but were upgraded from
14.04 or 16.04 and the other two are on 16.04 and were upgraded from
12.04 and will soon be upgraded to 18.04.

I have reinstalled 18.04 from scratch twice on the new box and each time
the same issue happens. The NFS fails to mount using /etc/fstab.

The temporary fix is to use the crontab to mount shortly after boot.

[Bug 1773172] [NEW] quota kernel modules not available in linux-aws

2018-05-24 Thread Glenn
Public bug reported:

The quota kernel modules (quota_v1 and quota_v2) are not available in
the linux-aws kernel, because the modules are contained in the generic
kernel's linux-image-extra package.

There is no -extra package for linux-aws, so the quota modules should be
promoted to the main linux-image package for linux-aws.

[Bug 1586859] Re: urllib3/util/retry.py broke on passing invalid type

2018-05-09 Thread Glenn Washburn
I've hit this bug on ubuntu 16.10 with python-pip version
8.1.2-2ubuntu0.1 when trying to create a virtualenv while disconnected
from the network. After upgrading to python-pip version 9.0.1-2.3 from
ubuntu 18.04, this behavior disappeared. So I believe this problem
resolved.

I've attached a python script that will work in python 2 or 3 which
reproduces this bug on affected systems for verifying that this issue
has been fixed.

[Bug 1755951] Re: forcepae option doesn't work for ubuntu-mate 18.04 beta

2018-05-05 Thread Glenn Brumfield
This bug was filed for ubuntu-mate 18.04 beta. Ubuntu-MATE 18.04 release
boots and runs on my Banias Pentium-M with the 'forcepae' boot option
entered after the '---' (interrupt boot by pressing F6, press 'Escape'
to type in boot options). Interestingly, Virtualbox still seems to need
'PAE/NX' checked for the DVD or iso to boot. I don't know if this is due
to 18.04 or due to Virtualbox. I think we can call this bug squashed!

[Bug 1755951] Re: forcepae option doesn't work for ubuntu-mate 18.04 beta

2018-03-20 Thread Glenn Brumfield
Unable to run command [CODE] apport-collect 1755951 [/CODE] because
system will not boot without a viable 'forcepae' boot option. Since
ubuntu-mate is supporting 32-bit kernels, I hope that it will work for
Banias Pentium-D CPU's with the forcepae boot option, since the CPU is
quite capable of running PAE but does not advertise that fact due to a
bug. It is ironic that PAE is required for 32-bit CPU's at all, since
most of the surviving 32-bit CPU's are on a motherboard that cannot
accept more than about 3Gb RAM anyway. For example, mine is maxed out at
2Gb RAM, making PAE moot for me (and I suspect almost everyone else
too.) An alternative option, of course, would be to provide a nonPAE
kernel.

[Bug 1740921] [NEW] Nautilus renames partitions on external USB HDD

2018-01-02 Thread Glenn Brumfield
Public bug reported:

Nautilus adds the number "1" to the partition names on my external
backup USB HDD (e.g., EXT4 = EXT41, JFS = JFS1, NTFS = NTFS1). This
seems to have occurred since the last set of updates. I speculate that
this may or may not have something to do with the recent 'Backups'
(Deja-Dup) update within the last week, but I don't know how to verify
this. I have verified the correct partition names using GParted from a
Live-DVD of Ubuntu 16.04.3; the correct names do not have the appended
"1" added to the partition name(s) on the external USB drive. Names
appear to be correct for the internal HDD for my PC. I have attached a
screenshot of Nautilus with the affected partitions displayed. I am
using Ubuntu 16.04 with all updates as of this date.

[Bug 1721343] Re: VLC does not display video from DVD or streaming video

2017-10-21 Thread Glenn Brumfield
OK, I've figured out what's going on. My PC's have been using the
Nouveau display driver (apparently one of my recent updates reset my
active video driver(s) from the Nvidia proprietary driver to the default
Nouveau open-source driver(s)). Once I downloaded, installed and
activated the Nvidia proprietary driver(s) for my video card(s) VLC
works as it should on my PC's. However, this means that there is still
an incompatibility between VLC and the Nouveau open-source video driver.
